  • A Robust Low-Complexity Generalized Harmonic Canceling Model for Wideband RF Power Amplifiers

    Broadband amplifiers have been used in modern wireless communication systems. However, the accompanying disadvantage is that there is more nonlinear interference in the available operating frequency band. In addition to the in-band intermodulation distortion which affecting adjacent frequency bands the most important is harmonic distortion. In this letter we present a robust and low complex digital harmonic canceling model called cross-disturbing harmonic (CDH) model for broadband power amplifiers (PAs). The approach introducing cross terms is used to enhance the robustness of the model, thereby significantly increase the stability of the system. The CDH model still has excellent performance when actively reducing the number of coefficients. Comparisons are conducted between the CDH model and the other state-of-the-art model called memory polynomial harmonic (MPM) model. Experimental results show that the CDH model can achieve comparable performance as the MPM model but with much fewer (43%) coefficients.

    Design of an equivalent slew-rate monolithic pulse generator using bipolar-CMOS-DMOS (BCD) technology for medical ultrasound transmitters is presented in this paper. The pulse generator employs a floating capacitive coupling level-shifter architecture to produce a high-voltage (Vpp=80V) output. The performance of equivalent slew-rate in the rising and falling edge is achieved by carefully choosing the value of coupling capacitors and the size of the final stage high-voltage MOSFETs of the pulse generator. The measured output pulses show the rising and falling time of 8.6nsec and 8.5nsec, respectively with second harmonic distortion down to -40dBc, indicating the designed pulse generator can be used for advanced ultrasonic harmonic imaging systems.

    This paper presents a low distortion 3rd-order continuous-time delta-sigma modulator for a worldwide digital TV-receiver whose peak SNDR is 69.8 dB and SNR is 70.2 dB under 1 V power supply. To enhance SNDR performance, the mechanisms to occur harmonic distortions at feedback current-steering DAC and flash ADC have been analyzed. A low power tuning system using RC-relaxation oscillator has been developed in order to achieve high yield against PVT variations. A 3rd-order modulator with modified single opamp resonator contributes to cost reduction by realizing a very compact circuit. Reduction schemes of the distortions enabled the modulator to achieve FOM of 0.18 pJ/conv-step.

  • Electromagnetic Interference Analysis Based on Total Harmonic Distortion Measurement in 900 MHz Cordless Telephones

    In this paper a new electromagnetic (EM) interference analysis is proposed using the total harmonic distortion (THD) measurement of the audio signal by the 900 MHz cordless telephones. The cordless telephone network in 900 MHz was built up to be weak in EM interference. 400 and 800 Hz of the sine-wave signal were used in transmitter (TX) system, and the receiver (RX) system was exposed to the EM interference. The THD value varies as the level of the exposed EM interference changes. The model of the cordless telephone also affects the THD value. By using fluctuation of the THD value depending on the amount of the exposure, the threshold value of the interference electric field strength was derived. Based on the derived threshold value of the electric field strength, validity of the regulation value for low power radio devices by CISPR 22 [CLASS B] and FCC is discussed.

  • A Reliable Low-Voltage Low-Distortion MOS Analog Switch

    A novel low-voltage low-distortion analog sampling switch is proposed in this letter. A "source tracker" techniuqe is used to distinguish the real source terminal of the sampling switch. The turn-on resistance of the sampling switch is kept exactly constant. The modified switch makes the rail-to-rail input signal swing possible for low voltage. TSMC 0.18 µm standard CMOS technology is utilized in this research. Results indicate that much lower Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is achieved by the proposed circuit. The low THD meets the requirements in the application of the low-voltage low-distortion switched-capacitor circuits.

    In this paper a second order Volterra series model of an operational amplifier (opamp) circuit is presented. Such a model is suitable to the investigation of the rectification and demodulation effects of radio frequency (RF) interference superimposed on the nominal input signals and on the power supply voltage of an opamp. On the basis of the new model, some design criteria to improve the immunity of opamps to RF interference are proposed. Model predictions are verified by comparison with experimental test results.

    Higher-order harmonics and distortions generated by nonlinearity of capacitance-voltage characteristic of a single varactor and an anti-series-connected varactor pair are analyzed and compared. The effect of linear and parabolic terms of nonlinearity to harmonics outputs and distortions is discussed. It is shown that an anti-series-connected varactor pair has a completely suppressed linear term and reduced parabolic term. The advantage of an anti-series-connected varactor pair is theoretically explained.

    Harmonic distortions of a recently developed lightweight film-type ESPAR (Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiator) antenna are investigated experimentally. These distortions arise from the nonlinearity of the varactor diodes that are directly integrated with the parasitic radiator elements to control the antenna's radiation pattern. A reactive-near-field measurement technique that employs low-interference probes in an ultra-small anechoic box is used to reduce experimental time and cost. An anti-series varactor pair is introduced and compared with the conventional single varactor. Consequently, an ESPAR antenna equipped with the anti-series varactor pair exhibits remarkable suppression of nonlinear distortion. In particular, the second- and the third-order harmonic is reduced by approximately 20 dB and 12 dB from the level of a single varactor type ESPAR antenna, respectively.

    We present measurements of kilohertz and megahertz sine waves synthesized using a Josephson arbitrary waveform synthesizer. A 4.8 kHz sine wave synthesized using an ac-coupled bias technique is shown to have a stable 121 mV peak voltage and harmonic distortion 101 dB below the fundamental (-101 dBc (carrier)). We also present results of our first phase-noise measurement. A 5.0 MHz sine wave was found to have distortion 33 dB lower than the same signal synthesized using a semiconductor digital code generator. The white-noise floor of the Josephson synthesized signal is -132 dBc/Hz and is limited by the noise floor of the preamplifier.
