  • General Closed-Form Transfer Function Expressions for Fast Filter Bank

    The existing literature focuses on the applications of fast filter bank due to its excellent frequency responses with low complexity. However, the topic is not addressed related to the general transfer function expressions of the corresponding subfilters for a specific channel. To do this, in this paper, general closed-form transfer function expressions for fast filter bank are derived. Firstly, the cascaded structure of fast filter bank is modelled by a binary tree, with which the index of the subfilter at each stage within the channel can be determined. Then the transfer functions for the two outputs of a subfilter are expressed in a unified form. Finally, the general closed-form transfer functions for the channel and its corresponding subfilters are obtained by variables replacement if the prototype lowpass filters for the stages are given. Analytical results and simulations verify the general expressions. With such closed-form expressions lend themselves easily to analysis and direct computation of the transfer functions and the frequency responses without the structure graph.

    This paper proposes a methodology for designing broadband class B/J power amplifier based on a mirrored lowpass filter matching structure. According to this filter theory, the impedance of this design method is mainly related to the cutoff frequency. Series inductors and shunt capacitors filter out high frequencies. The change of input impedance with frequency is small in the passband. Which can suppress higher harmonics and expand bandwidth. In order to confirm the validity of the design method, a broadband high-efficiency power amplifier in the 1.3 - 3.9GHz band is designed and fabricated. Measurement results show that the output power is greater than 40.5dBm, drain efficiency is 61.2% - 70.8% and the gain is greater than 10dB.

  • Improvements in the Transient Response of Distributed Amplifiers

    A new method is presented in order to improve the transient response of distributed amplifiers. The method is based on fitting the parameters of the distributed amplifier to those of a predesigned lowpass filter. Analytical expressions are derived to show the performance of the new structure. Three distributed amplifiers are designed based on the proposed method and it has been shown that the new method can significantly improve the transient response of the amplifier. It has been shown that the new method can improve the other characteristics of the distributed amplifier too. The effects of parasitic and lossy elements has also been considered and it has been shown that such effects doesn't violate the generality of the proposed theory.

    A fast fc automatic tuning circuit suitable for WCDMA systems is proposed. The circuit employs master-slave architecture using digitally controlled Gm-C filter for avoiding long transient response. The tuning feedback loop contains a 2-bit up-down counter ADC for fast tuning operation. Furthermore, to avoid degradation of fc tuning accuracy due to reference feedthrough, an analog loop filter with notch located near reference frequency is used. The fast fc automatic tuning circuit is fabricated in a SiGe BiCMOS process. The tuning time within 200 µs is achieved for 35 chips from 2 lots and the standard deviation of 25.5 kHz is obtained for the average fc of 2.12 MHz.

  • Microstrip Lowpass Filters with Reduced Size and Improved Stopband Characteristics

    Novel microstrip lowpass filters are developed with reduced size and significantly improved stopband characteristics. After introducing quarter-wavelength open stubs, we get one or two transmission zeros in the stopband. By folding the high impedance microstrip lines, we reduce the size of the filter. Three-pole and five-pole lowpass filters are designed, and their measured frequency responses agree well with theoretical predictions.

    On a transmission line lowpass filter fabricated on a printed circuit board using open-circuited microstrip straight-line stubs, the frequency at the edge of a passband or stopband tends to be higher than the frequency determined by the filter synthesis theory. One of the reasons for this is thought to be the interconnection of a low-impedance straight-line stub and transmission lines. The length of a constituent transmission line cannot be determined precisely because of the finite width. Therefore, as a means of avoiding the frequency shift between a trial circuit and a theoretical one, we first introduce a radial-line stub, and then show the equivalency of a radial-line stub to a straight-line stub in a range of zero to the first resonant frequency from the view point of their input impedances. Dimensional data of radial-line stubs corresponding to low-impedance straight-line stubs are investigated with respect to examples of three-, five- and seven-element Butterworth and Chebyshev filters. It was found that frequency characteristics of trial lowpass filters using radial-line stubs agree well with theoretical characteristics known as the Butterworth or Chebyshev.

    New explicit formulas for tap-coefficients of halfband low/high pass MAXFLAT non-recursive filters are presented by using their relationship with already presented maximally linear type IV differentiators. These formulas are modified to give a new class of narrow transition band filters, with a performance comparable to that of optimal filters.
