  • Multimedia Communication Protocols and Services for Broadband Private Networks

    There has been growing interest in Broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) based on ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technologies, since ATM is expected to support a wide range of applications through high-speed and flexible multimedia communication capabilities. This paper reviews and discusses technical issues on multimedia communication protocols and services from the integration points of view of computer and communication technologies. An ISDN-based distributed multimedia and multi-party desktop conference system called MERMAID is introduced as an example which offers highly-sophisticated functions for remote collaborations among multiple users. This system, which was developed in early 1989 and has been used for daily research work since then, involves B-ISDN key technologies related to multimedia and multicast protocols, and computer architecture for groupware applications.

    In order to construct a high-capacity and high-reliable indoor wireless communications system, it is essential to design the modulation/demodulation, coding and access schemes with high and variable data rate transmission capabilities, which meet the technical requirements inherent to wireless communications, i.e., high frequency utilization efficiency and robustness for fading. In this paper, we propose the frequency and time division multiple access with demand-assignment (FTDMA/DA) using multicarrier modulation as a frequency and time synchronous answer to meet the requirements, and analyze the performance of the FTDMA/DA system, taking account of teletraffic characteristics of multimedia information sources.

    A new phase shift lithography method has been developed that allows different integrated circuit features to be focused on different optical planes that conform to the wafer surface topography. In principle, each pattern in the circuit has its own unique focal plane. The direction and magnitude of each focus shift is determined by the design of the shifter patterns. This method is applicable for use with conventional opaque mask patterns and unattenuated phase shift patterns. The characteristics of this multiple-focus-plane technique have been evaluated experimentally and confirmed theoretically through mathematical modeling using TCC optical imaging theory. Experiments were conducted using i-line positive resist processes for different phase-shift patterns. This paper discusses the effects of changes in phase shift and recommends practical mask design approaches.

    This paper describes the development of an environmental ICAI system for English conversation learning, which is equipped with a simulation-based learning environment and an advisor function. Recently there have been various educational applications or tools for adult second language education, where the learning target is the acquisition of formal knowledge of a language. When considering the implementation of a practical CAI system, methods for developing communicative competence in learners are required. Although there are a number of ICAI systems for conversation learning, often the methodologies which they apply are not completely suitable for the acquisition of the required fundamental knowledge. Our system, based on the architecture of environmental CAI, enhances communication skill acquisition. The system has a learning environment with the following features: (1) A simulation of language activities, implemented in the role-playing game style, which helps to promote a learner's motivation. (2) Educational behavior of the system is varied through the modification of the learning environment and changes in the simulation progress and control commands. (3) An induction strategy, which can cause learners to fail to achieve a learning target, is executed by an advisor mechanism. The system is a prototype architecture for application in environmental ICAI systems for simulation based learning. We believe that the architecture of this system is an efficient framework for linguistic education.

  • Hypermedia English Learning Environment Based on Language Understanding and Error Origin Identification

    This paper presents a hypermedia English learning environment, called HELEN (Hypermedia Environment for Learning ENglish), which integrates traditional methods of learning English, audio-visual facilities for both listening and watching and intelligent tutoring functions for suitable advice to each learner based on natural language understanding. HELEN consists of an authoring stage and a learning stage. In order to support multimodal learning, at the authoring stage HELEN gets voice and video scenes from a video disc and text sentences from an image scanner, then analyzes the sentences both syntactically and semantically by a natural language processing module so that necessary information for conversation, error identification and example sentence retrieval may be extracted. Thus at the learning stage, HELEN is able to aid learners to learn hearing, reading, writing, watching, consulting and noting. Besides these facilities HELEN also supports two facilities for tests in English: One is the test facilities of dictating sentences and the other is QA (questions and answers) facilities to make learner's comprehension state clear. According to the results of these tests, HELEN identifies learner's illegal usage of syntax or semantics, and piles them in a student model. The illegal usage in the model is used as resources for generating questions, treating errors, determining topics, etc. The main part of this paper concerns with the representation method for syntax and semantics of correct and incorrect sentences.

    This paper describes the current situations and future directions of intelligent CAI researches/development in Japan. Then necessity of intelligence in CAIs/Educational systems are thought over corresponding to the model of teaching and the cognitive model of human learning like the situated learning, knowledge construction and so on. Originally, the main aims of ITSs/ICAIs are to tealize the high level environment of individual teaching/learning. So it is the most important to incorporate the intellectual function of teaching into the system. Whatever kinds of teaching purposes ITSs have, they have the quite complex structure which consists of the domain knowledge base (Expert system), student model, the tutoring knowledge base, the powerful human interface, and sophisticated inference engine with plural functions by artificial intelligence technology. In this paper, the technological and educational points of view are discussed, surveyed and summarized based on intelligent teaching functions of ITSs/ICAIs. Moreover, the meaning of new paradigm from ITSs to ILE are mentioned under the new technology of networking and multi-media.

    A two-cascaded image processing approach to enhance the subtle differences in X-ray CT image is proposed. In the method, an asymmetrical non-linear subfilter is introduced to reduce the noise inherent in the image while preserving local edges and directional structural information. Then, a subfilter is used to compress the global dynamic range of the image and emphasize the details in the homogeneous regions by performing a modular transformation on local image den-sities. The modular transformation is based on a dynamically defined contrast fator and the histogram distributions of the image. The local contrast factor is described in accordance with Weber's fraction by a two-layer neighborhood system where the relative variances of the medians for eight directions are computed. This method is suitable for low contrast images with wide dynamic ranges. Experiments on X-ray CT images of the head show the validity of the method.

    Text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) is currently one of the most important media conversion techniques. In this paper, we describe a Japanese TTS card developed for constructing a personal-computer-based multimedia platform, and a TTS software package developed for a workstation-based multimedia platform. Some applications of this hardware and software are also discussed. The TTS consists of a linguistic processing stage for converting text into phonetic and prosodic information, and a speech processing stage for producing speech from the phonetic and prosodic symbols. The linguistic processing stage uses morphological analysis, rewriting rules for accent movement and pause insertion, and other techniques to impart correct accentuation and a natural-sounding intonation to the synthesized speech. The speech processing stage employs the cepstrum method with consonant-vowel (CV) syllables as the synthesis unit to achieve clear and smooth synthesized speech. All of the processing for converting Japanese text (consisting of mixed Japanese Kanji and Kana characters) to synthesized speech is done internally on the TTS card. This allows the card to be used widely in various applications, including electronic mail and telephone service systems without placing any processing burden on the personal computer. The TTS software was used for an E-mail reading tool on a workstation.

  • Numerical Analysis of the Effective Dielectric Constant of the Medium where Dielectric Spheres are Randomly Distributed

    The effective dielectric constant εeff of discrete random medium composed of many dielectric spheres has been analyzed by EFA (Effective Field Approximation), QCA (Quasicrystalline Approximation) and QCA-CP (Quasicrystalline Approximation and Coherent Potential) in the case where the optical path length is very large in the medium. These methods lead to a reasonable K for non-large dielectric constants of spheres, while their methods yield an unphysical dependence of εeff on large dielectric constants of spheres: that is, the εeff does not become large for increasing the dielectric constant. In this paper, we remove the unphysical dependence and present new results for εeff of our method, comparing with the results for εeff of EFA, QCA and QCA-CP.

    This paper presents a new Hypermedia communication platform supported by the new digital image medium of super high definition (SHD) images. This new image communication platform will encourage the integration of all existing media to realize rich and realistic visual communication over B-ISDN. SHD images have a resolution of more than 20482048 pixels and the frame rate is more than 60 frames/sec. To achieve an real-time compression of SHD moving images, parallel signal processing systems with peak performance of 0.5 Tera Flops will be necessary. The specification requirements, signal processing and communication technologies needed to achieve SHD image communication are discussed. The relationship of hypermedia to SHD images is also examined.

    Fiber-optic local area networks (LANs) with Fiber Distributed Digital Interface (FDDI) protocol have come into use as backbones connecting other small LANs. This paper describes the current status of LANs, reviews a number of issues that stand in the way of further development and look at the future of LANs. Demands for wide-area networks (WANs) connecting LANs and multimedia LANs including voice and image capability has been extremely strong, spurring progress in geographical expansion and throughput increase, now over 100Mbit/s. The logical choice of transmission medium for next-generation systems is single-mode optical fiber, not only for backbone LANs but also, eventually, for floor LANs.

    This paper describes a task-oriented speech dialogue system based on spontaneous speech understanding and response generation (TOSBURG). The system has been developed for a fast food ordering task using speaker-independent keyword-based spontaneous speech understanding. Its purpose being to understand the user's intention from spontaneous speech, the system consists of a noise-robust keyword-spotter, a semantic keyword lattice parser, a user-initiated dialogue manager and a multimodal response generator. After noise immunity keyword-spotting is performed, the spotted keyword candidates are analyzed by a keyword lattice parser to extract the semantic content of the input speech. Then, referring to the dialogue history and context, the dialogue manager interprets the semantic content of the input speech. In cases where the interpretation is ambiguous or uncertain, the dialogue manager invites the user to confirm verbally the system's understanding of the speech input. The system's response to the user throughout the dialogue is multimodal; that is, several modes of communication (synthesized speech, text, animated facial expressions and ordered food items) are used to convey the system's state to the user. The object here is to emulate the multimodal interaction that occurs between humans, and so achieve more natural and efficient human-computer interaction. The real-time dialogue system has been constructed using two general purpose workstations and four DSP accelerators (520MFLOPS). Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the newly developed speech dialogue system.

  • Discussion on a Method to Generalize the Computerized Test Based on the Analysis of Learners' Image Structure to Computer System

    In this letter authors discussed on the strategy to apply computerized tests on learners who have negative attitude to computerized tests. First, learners' image to computer system was measured by semantic differential method (SD method). It was revealed that the image of computer systems was made up of four factors of subjective evaluation (Es), objective evaluation (Eo), potency (P) and activity (A). Learners who have negative attitude to computerized test were revealed to have negative image on (Es) and (A) factors, while on the other hand have rather positive image on (Eo) and (P) factors. Then authors developed the feedback record charts laying stress on (Eo) and (P) factors. This feedback chart was effective to improve learners' acceptability of computerized test.

    An algorithm is presented for selecting the k-th smallest element of a totally ordered (but not sorted) set of n elements, 1kn, in the case that a special-purpose sorter is used as a coprocessor. When the pipeline merge sorter is used as the special-purpose sorter, we analyze the comparison complexity of the algorithm for the given capacity of the sorter. The comparison complexity of the algorithm is 1.4167no(n), provided that the capacity of the sorter is 256 elements. The comparison complexity of the algorithm decreases as the capacity of the sorter increases.

    The purpose of our research is to get further improvement in the performance of order statistic filters. The basic idea found in our research is the use of a robust median estimator to obtain median differential order information which the classes of order statistic filter required in order to sort the input signal in the filter window. In order to give the motivation for using a median estimator in the classes of order statistic filters, we derive theorems characterizing the median filters and prove them theoretically using the characteristic that the order statistic filter has the performance for a monotonic signal equivalent with the FIR linear filter. As an application of median operation, we propose and investigate the Median Differential Order Statistic Filter to reduce impulsive noise as well as Gaussian noise and regard it as a subclass of the Order Statistic Filter. Moreover, we introduce the piecewise linear function in the Median Differential Order Statistic Filter to improve performance in terms of edge preservation. We call it the Piecewise Linear Median Differential Order Statistic Filter. The effectiveness of proposed filters is verified theoretically by computing the output Mean Square Error of the filters in parts of edge signals, impulsive noise, small amplitude noise and their combination. Computer simulations also show that the proposed filter can improve the performance in both noise (small-amplitude Gaussian noise and impulsive noise) reduction and edge preservation for one-dimensional signals.

    A novel coupling configuration consisting of a tapered slab waveguide with a wedge-shaped nonlinear cladding is proposed. Coupling characteristics for TE waves are analyzed by means of the beam propagation method. The proposed configuration is less sensitive to the offset between coupled waveguides than is the configuration with a homogeneous non-linear cladding.

    Over the past few years, the drive towards optimization and globalization of business activities has mandated the integration of various services, an increase in system scale, and the networking of a variety of systems. These requirements can only be satisfied by the introduction of systems that are able to accommodate and control multiple media and integrate LANs and PBXs synergistically. This paper proposes an architecture for next generation private networks called ANS (Areal Networking System) that is targeted at achieving flexible customization in an effort to meet a wide variety of user requirements as well as the ability to efficiently handle multimedia services. Based upon the clarification of various requirements on the ANS architecture, this paper defines two models for the ANS architecture. These models introduce modular building blocks in hierarchical structures that facilitate the custom design of networks. The key technologies for the ANS architecture are also discussed; for example, schemes for logically networking control functions by using virtual connections and a way to implement the LAN function.

  • Translucent Multiuser Interface for Realtime Collaboration

    The new notion of "multiuser interface", an interface for groups working together in a shared workspace, originated from the expansion of CSCW research and the spread of the groupware concept. This paper introduces a new multiuser interface design approach based on the translucent video overlay technique. This approach was realized in the multimedia desktop conference system Team WorkStation. Team WorkStation demonstrates that this translucent video overlay technique can achieve two different goals: (1) fused overlay for realizing the open shared workspace, and (2) selective overlay for effectively using limited screen space. This paper first describes the concept of open shared workspace and its implementation based on the fused overlay technique. The shared work window of Team-WorkStation is created by overlaying translucent individual workspace images. Each video layer is originally physically separated. However, because of the spatial relationships among marks on each layer, the set of overlaid layers provides users with sufficient semantics to fuse them into one image. The usefulness of this cognitive fusion was demonstrated through actual usage in design sessions. Second, the problem of screen space limitation is described. To solve this problem, the idea of ClearFace based on selective overlay is introduced. The ClearFace idea is to lay translucent live face video windows over a shared work window. Through the informal observations of experimental use in design sessions, little difficulty was experienced in switching the focus of attention between the face images and the drawing objects. The theory of selective looking accounts for this flexible perception mechanism. Although users can see drawn objects behind a face without difficulty, we found that users hesitate to draw figures or write text over face images. Because of this behavior, we devised the "movable" face window strategy.

  • Coupled Star Network: A New Configuration for Optical Local Area Network

    Theoretical network analysis of a network constructed of "Interconnectable Star Couplers" whose all diagonal elements of transmission matrix are zero is investigated. Under certain connection rules, Interconnectable Star Coupler can be connected each other without oscillation and ghost formation. The rules are: (1) Network should not contain any loop. (2)Only single port pair should be connected between neighbor star couplers. (3)Network shold not contain any usual star coulpler. "Coupled Star Network", which is constructed under the connection rules, is able to form Cascade Star topology, Stratified Star topology and their mixed topology. It is shown that the Coupled Star Network is equivalent to a large Interconnectable Star Coupler so that bidirectional communication, which can add confidentiality to the broadcasting bus and doubles communication capacity, is available. A new configuration of Coupled Star Network using passive Interconnectable Star Couplers and optical amplifiers is proposed. This network has two separated bidirectional communication channel which can be applied for so-called Multimedia LAN. As a result of comparison between Cascade Star topology and Stratifide Star topology, it is shown that the latter topology is superior to former topology, from the view point of signal degeneration and maximum round trip delay time. Cascade Star topology, however, is superior to Stratified Star topology from the angle of total fiber length. Accordingly, optimized network topology is thought to be mixed topology of these.
