A blind technique for adaptive signal suppression in multipath DS-CDMA communication channels for the downlink is considered. Its performance is degraded when mismatch problem occurs when multipath components arrive with fractional-chip delays. In order to surmount this problem, Multiple Finger Expansion Optimal Filter (MFE-OF) was recently proposed to estimate the received desired signal subspace using fractionally delayed despreading fingers. However, MFE-OF requires much computational complexity for good performance. In this paper, a modification to the MFE-OF is introduced by utilizing decision-directed steering vector to reduce the number of fingers required by MFE-OF down to that of the conventional OMF-RAKE without much performance degradation. This modified receiver is called Decision-Directed Optimal Filter (DDOF). Computer simulation validates the effectiveness of the new receiver to increase the downlink capacity of DS-CDMA systems.
This paper presents the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the RAKE receiver over a multipath Rayleigh fading channel. The closed-form BER in the downlink single-cell environment is obtained through the analysis of the imperfect channel estimation. We compute the BER as a function of energy-to-noise ratio per bit including the effect of multiple access interference and multipath interference, with channel and system parameters: number of diversity channels L = 1, 3, 6, 12; Doppler frequency shift with fD T = 0.008333, 0.0167, 0.025; residual carrier frequency offset Δ f = -600 600 Hz; averaging length of the channel estimator Np = 128-1536 chips. This analysis allows predicting the system's performance and helps to optimize the parameter setting for the channel estimation process. We show that even if the optimal system parameters are used, the BER performance results in a minimal 4dB degradation in comparison to the perfect channel estimation. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by using the Monte-Carlo computer simulations.

Multi-path propagation structure in the urban mobile communication environment of 25 GHz band has been measured by means of newly developed "multi-path propagation parameter measurement equipment," which is capable of estimating coupled DOA (Direction Of Arrival), TOA (Time Of Arrival) and relative field strength by super resolution techniques. Before measurement, basic performance of the equipment has been evaluated in the anechoic chamber in order to ascertain limitation on measurement. For practice and verification of outdoor propagation characteristics, basic data have been collected in a works where accurate buildings and road layout is known. Sub-sequently, data have been collected in the urban mobile communication environment and following characteristics have been confirmed. 1) DOA and TOA of wave reflected by the side of building almost follow the ray-trace. 2) Street trees make 25 GHz band wave attenuate. 3) There are such unusual cases that it is possible to communicate in spite of out of line-of-sight by multi-path propagation. 4) Narrow streets have very complicated propagation structures. Finally, technologies that should be developed for the high-speed digital mobile communication are proposed based on the measurement results.

This paper describes a method of predicting transmission performance to be obtained by applying RAKE reception and parallel transmission in realistic urban multipath environments. Delay profiles measured in metropolitan Tokyo at microwave frequencies were used to obtain the impulse responses of radio channels, and the closed-form equations corresponding to the performance of these anti-multipath techniques were derived, by means of the characteristic function method, under the assumption that the phases of the impulse responses are uniformly distributed. Results show that RAKE reception provides bit error rates 100 times lower than bare transmission does, whereas the improvement obtained by using parallel transmission should be especially valuable in broadband communication systems, such as those operating at data rates above 10 Mb/s.

Multimedia mobile communication systems are expected to be realized in the near future. In such systems, multipath fading can cause severe degradations of the quality of the communications due to its wide bandwidth, especially in urban areas. Adaptive array antennas can be attractive solution for overcoming the multipath fading. Suppression can be achieved with the adaptive array by cophasing and combining multipath signals in the space and time domain. On the other hand, the concept of software antenna has been proposed. The software antenna recognizes radiowave environments and appropriately reconfigures itself for the signal processing required by the recognized environment. Efficient implementations can be expected if these functions are realized by the software. In this paper, we propose two types of the adaptive array systems which is reconfigurable depending on the radiowave environment as a realization of the concept of the software antenna. They recognize the environment by using the eigenvalue decomposition of space domain correlation matrices and reconfigure their structures of the signal processing. The principle and performance are examined by theoretical means and through computer simulations.

A novel multipath diversity scheme used in TDD-CDMA systems is presented. A FIR filter is added in the transmitter, while a RAKE combiner is used in the receiver. The optimum FIR filter problem may be viewed as an eigenvalue problem. The multiple antennas system is also analyzed. Results show that this new scheme can greatly improve the output Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) compared with conventional RAKE receiver or Pre-RAKE diversity system.

Wireless communication systems are affected by several factors in the indoor environment. The complexity of this environment, however, has hampered the development of methods for analyzing it. Reported here is our investigation of the relationship between the propagation characteristics and performance of a 2.4-GHz ISM-band wireless LAN in various indoor environments. Our objective was to develop guidelines for designing ideal indoor environments for wireless LANs. A booth constructed of a ceiling, floor, and wall materials that could be changed was used for our investigation. The transmission loss and delay spread were measured for four environments; they were calculated by using a ray-tracing method to verify the effectiveness of the ray tracing calculation. The throughput and BER characteristics were measured for the same environments. The following results were obtained. (1) The transmission loss and delay spread could be estimated by using this ray tracing method because the deviations between the calculated and measured data were within 5 dB for the transmission loss and within 10 ns for the delay spread. (2) Reflections from the walls caused a serious interference problem: throughput was 0.0 at more than 30% of the positions along the center line of the booth when the walls were constructed of high-reflection-coefficient material. (3) The throughput and BER were closely correlated with the delay spread; the number of positions meeting a certain throughput was estimated by the method based on the delay spread calculated using the ray tracing method. It was within 10% of the number measured. The results obtained can be used to design ideal indoor environments for 2.4-GHz ISM-band LAN systems.
The transfer function or impulse response of propagation path is one of the most fundamental and most important quantities for equalizing the distortions cased by multipath propagation. In this paper, precise identification of the transfer function of the propagation path under multipath condition is presented. By use of the least-square method, uncertainty due to white noise is sufficiently eliminated.

Effects of the model order estimation error in the TLS-ESPRIT algorithm were investigated. It was found that if the model order is overestimated true signal parameters are preserved even though spurious signals of which power values are negligibly small appear, whereas if the model order is underestimated some signals degenerate to each others, resulting in the erroneous estimates.

In recent years, several global network systems using non-stationary satellites have been proposed. Some of them are announced to start services within years. We also have several experimental systems with stratospheric aircrafts. In the future, the radio communication system using stratospheric aircrafts will be one of the promising media for personal communications. The question of how to establish the optimal communication under such circumstance seems to be still open. In this paper, performance evaluations of wireless communication systems using LEO satellites and stratospheric aircrafts are proposed. We will show some proper communication parameters to improve competence of mobile communication in the such systems as well.

In land mobile communication, CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) has been studied to reduce multipath fading effect. By this method, the transmitted power is not used efficiently since all the multipath components have the same information. To make use of received power efficiently, we propose a Blind Multiple Beam Adaptive Array. It has the following three feature points. First, we use CMA which can reduce the multipath fading effect to some extent without training signal. Second, LMS algorithm which can capture the multipath components which are separated from the reference signal by some extent. Third, we use FDF (Fractional Delay Filter) and TED (Timing Error Detector) loop which can detect and compensate fractional delay. As a result of utilizing the multipath components which is suppressed by CMA, the proposed technique achieves better performance than CMA adaptive array.
A maximal-ratio-combining (MRC) digital beamformer has been studied to attain open-loop and automatic self-beam steering towards both desired and multipath signals at the same time and diversity combining of the signals, which are made possible by spatial digital signal processing. This paper describes the performance of this beamformer under the multipath signal arrivals with various path delays using numerical simulation, aimed at application to future mobile radios with high spatial utilization efficiency. The results indicate the robustness of the MRC beamformer in a multipath environment. It features multidirectional beam steering when there is small path delay in the multipath signal and gain suppression in multipath signals when their path delay is more than about one symbol. Moreover, improvement in suppression by employing low-sidelobe amplitude distribution is discussed as a means to reduce inter-symbol interference without null-beam steering.
In indoor optical channels, intersymbol interference (ISI) due to multipath propagation prevents high data rate transmission. In this paper, a new Optical Multi-Wavelength Modulation technique has been investigated for improving the quality of transmission. In this technique, parallel transmission is used, which lowers the data rate per channel and thus reduces the effects of ISI. Furthermore, parallel coding is used in predetermined parallel branches, so that coding can correct errors without changing the system data rate. Simulation results show that a combination of these methods can achieve high quality transmission without reduction of the total data rate.

Pre-decorrelation is a method of achieving orthogonalization between multiple signals on the forward link. This technique can achieve orthogonalization in a flat fading channel, however, the orthogonality does not clearly appear in a multipath fading channel because of interchip interference. In order to eliminate the effect of multipath and prevent interchip interference, multicarrier modulation can be employed. In this paper we propose a multicarrier pre-decorrelation technique which combines multicarrier modulation with pre-decorrelation. Computer simulation results show that the proposed technique can achieve orthogonalization in a multipath fading channel.

In addition to additive thermal noise, a received direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) signal may suffer from intersymbol interference (ISI) and interference caused by cochannel narrowband users or other narrowband radio frequency interference (RFI). This paper presents a workable solution for removing narrowband interference (NBI) and reducing ISI or inter-chip interference (ICI) when the communication channel can be modeled as an FIR filter and the NBI comes from multiple CW tones, an AR-modeled Gaussian process, or a BPSK signal. Unlike earlier solutions, the proposed scheme is capable of performing the functions of NBI-rejection, ISI/ICI suppression and data detection (code despreading) simultaneously. It is easy to implement and, more importantly, it yields lower bit error rate (BER) and smaller mean squared error (MSE).
In this paper, the evaluation of a hybrid acquisition performance has been considered for the pilot signal in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) forward link. The hybrid acquisition is introduced by the combination of two schemes, parallel and serial acquisitions. The mean acquisition time of the hybrid acquisition scheme is derived to consider both case 1 (the correct code-phase offsets ae included in one subset) and case 2 (the correct code-phase offsets exist at the boundary of two subsets), which are caused by the distribution of the correct code-phase offsets between two subsets. Detection, false alarm, and miss probabilities are derived for the cases of multiple correct code-phase offsets and multipath Rayleigh fading channel. Results are provided for the acquisition performance with respect to system design parameters such as postdetection integration length in the search and verification modes, subset size, and number of I/Q noncoherent correlators. Also, comparision between hybrid acquisition and parallel acquisition under the same hardware complexity is provided in terms of the minimum mean acquisition time.

A new Neural Network Equalizer (NNE), employing multilayer feedforward neural network, is proposed as a compensation method for nonlinear and multipath distortion that arises from FTTA (Fiber To The Air) system. If a signal in a channel is affected by nonlinear distortion, the conventional Decision Feedback Equalizer (DFE) finds difficulty in perfect compensation of it. To compensate for nonlinear distortion as well as multipath distortion, an equalizer, employing neural network, is investigated. A new neural network equalizer, yielding a cubic function as unit output function, is proposed in order to compensate the nonlinear distortion effectively. We also propose an initial weights of neural network for preventing from local minimum. Computer simulation results show that the compensation performance of the new NNE is superior to the conventional DFE and the conventional NNE.

Multipath interconnection networks can support higher bandwidth than those of nonblocking networks by passing multiple packets to the same output simultaneously and these packets are buffered in the output buffer. The delay-throughput performance of the output buffer in multipath networks is closely related to output traffic distribution, packet arrival process at each output link connected to a given output buffer. The output traffic distributions are different according to the various input traffic patterns. Focusing on nonuniform output traffic distributions, this paper develops a new, general analytic model of the output buffer in multipath networks, which enables us to investigate the delay-throughput performance of the output buffer under various input traffic patterns. This paper also introduces Multipath Crossbar network as a representative multipath network which is the base architecture of our analysis. It is shown that the output buffer performances such as packet loss probability and delay improve as nonuniformity of the output traffic distribution becomes larger.

As the demand of wireless personal communications networks increases, detailed chracteristics of indoor radio propagation in UHF band are required. In this paper, multipath fading characteristics at 1 GHz in an indoor mobil (walking speed) channel are investigated. By using a computer-controlled antenna scanner, signal strength was measured at 1400 points with a quarter wavelength resolution, which forms a two-dimensional fading map. The fading characteristics were found to be mainly dominated by the signals through the LOS path and the reflected paths due to two side-walls and one front-wall. It is analytically shown that middle-scale (over three wavelengths) fading is caused by the reflection from the side-walls, and periodical small-scale (equal to or less than a wavelength) fading is caused by the reflection from the front-wall. A software simulator based on geometric optics was developed in order to predict the measured fades. A modified algorithm for the two-dimensional ray launching technique which removes the necessity of checking the "multiple-counted rays" is presented. Comparison between measurements and predictions shows good agreement highlighting the usefulness of the two-dimensional simulator as a tool for channel design.
