A cell planning and resource allocation scheme called EBRD (Enhanced Bandwidth and Region Division) is presented for improving channel capacity and for maintaining a proper QoS (Quality of Service) over the downlink OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system. Through an optimal combination of sectorization and frequency overlay, the EBRD scheme improves both channel capacity and outage probability. In order to analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, the outage probability is obtained as a closed numerical form. In the simulation, the EBRD scheme outperforms 3-sectorization in terms of throughput and outage probability.

In a multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, efficient resource allocation is required to provide service to more users. In this letter, we propose an improved subcarrier allocation algorithm that can increase the spectral efficiency and the number of total transmission bits even if the number of users is too large. The proposed algorithm is divided into two stages. In the first stage, a group of users who are eligible for services is determined by using the bit error rate (BER), the users' minimum data rate requirement, and channel information. In the second stage, subcarriers are first allocated to the users on the basis of channel state, and then the reallocation is performed so that resource waste is minimized. We show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional one on the basis of outage probability, spectral efficiency, and the number of total transmission bits through a computer simulation.
In this letter, we first provide the closed-form exact outage probability of opportunistic single relay selection in decode-and-forward (DF) relaying with the direct source-destination link under arbitrarily distributed Rayleigh fading channels. The signals from the source and the selected relay are combined at the destination by using maximal ratio combining (MRC). We derive the probability density function (PDF) and the cumulative density function (CDF) of received SNR at the destination. Numerical results show that the analytic results exactly match with the simulated ones.

This paper studies a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems over shadowed Nakagami-m fading channels and derives an approximate analytical expression for the outage probability. The numerical results show that the derived analytical expression can provide very well approximations to the simulation results.
In this letter, we investigate the outage performance for decode-and-forward relaying under Rayleigh fading in the presence of multiple unequal-powered Rayleigh co-channel interferers. A close-form expression for the outage probability is derived and simulation results verify the theoretical solution.
In this paper, we investigate the performance of maximum ratio combining (MRC) in the presence of multiple cochannel interferences over a flat Rayleigh fading channel. Closed-form expressions of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), outage probability, and average symbol error rate (SER) of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with M-ary signaling are obtained for unequal-power interference-to-noise ratio (INR). We also provide an upper-bound for the average SER using moment generating function (MGF) of the SINR. Moreover, we quantify the array gain loss between pure MRC (MRC system in the absence of CCI) and MRC system in the presence of CCI. Finally, we verify our analytical results by numerical simulations.

Prior studies have shown that the performance of amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems can be considerably improved by using multiple antennas and low complexity linear processing at the relay nodes. However, there is still a lack of performance analysis for the cases where the processing is based on limited feedback (LFB). Motivated by this, we derive the closed-form expression of the outage probability of AF relay systems with LFB beamforming in this letter. Simulation results are also provided to confirm the analytical studies.

Outage performance of cognitive radios is analyzed in this paper. The scenario under consideration requires the cognitive radio to sense whether the primary user (PU) link is free (i.e. a spectrum hole exists) before making an active transmission using that link. Multiple antennas are available at the cognitive radio link to provide array gains at the sensing stage. We derive a closed-form expression of the outage probability for cognitive transmission by classifying it into several cases. A sensing threshold is deduced according to the PU arrival model illustrated in this paper. Simulation results verify our analysis.

This paper evaluates the interference effect of Ultra-wideband devices on the broadband network. Also, an analytic scheme based on the system level simulation is proposed. A proposed analytic modeling approach includes an assumed scenario based on a geometric model, the estimation of an interfering UWB power level, and the approach based on the system level simulation for the evaluation. Results show throughput losses or outages of the broadband network due to UWB interference. As a conclusion of research, UWB emission should be limited to protect the broadband network.
Cooperative diversity represents an effective way of combating multipath fading through inter-terminal cooperation in wireless networks. In this letter, we propose a new participation strategy that increases the chance of cooperation and present the closed-form expression for outage probability. Numerical results demonstrate that new participation strategy improves the outage performance.

Aiming to optimally transmit space-time block codes (STBCs) over distributed antennas (DAs), this paper examines downlink transmit antenna subset selection with power allocation for STBCs in non-ergodic Rayleigh fading channels with receive antenna correlations. Closed-form outage probability is first derived, which is a function of data rate, rate of STBCs, transmit power, large-scale fading (shadowing and path loss), power allocation weights to each DA and receive antenna correlation. However, achieving the optimal power allocation solution is computationally demanding and the use of sub-optimal techniques is necessitated. Assuming feedback of eigenvalues of transmit and receive antenna correlation matrix at the transmitter and accurate channel state information (CSI) at the receiver, an antenna subset selection with sub-optimal power allocation scheme is proposed, whose performance approaches optimal. The effectiveness of this sub-optimal method has been demonstrated by numerical results.

In this letter, a more exact analysis scheme for outage probability is proposed for uplink of direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. In the previous works, the effect of call admission control (CAC) on signal to interference ratio (SIR) is considered to evaluate the performance of the outage probability for CDMA systems, however, the effect of CAC on system states is not accurately considered. In this letter, we first analyze the system states more exactly by taking the effect of CAC on CDMA system states into account. Then, the exact probability of the outage is derived according to the exact system states. The probability of the system states and the outage of the proposed approximation scheme are compared with the results of the traditional analysis schemes and the computer simulation. Compared with traditional analysis schemes, the numerical results of the proposed analysis scheme is more close to the computer simulation results.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems applying macroscopic selection diversity (MSD) are analyzed in composite fading channels through derived expressions of capacity outage probability. The MSD system uses a maximum capacity MIMO base station (BS) selection algorithm, where the results show a significant improvement in outage capacity.

The downlink (base-to-mobile) bit error rate (BER) performance for a mobile user with relatively weak received signal in a multicarrier-CDMA (MC-CDMA) cellular system can be improved by utilizing the site diversity reception. With joint use of MMSE-based frequency domain equalization (FDE) and antenna diversity combining, the site diversity operation will increase the downlink capacity. In this paper, an expression for the theoretical conditional BER for the given set of channel gains is derived based on Gaussian approximation of the interference components. The local average BER is then obtained by averaging the conditional BER over the given set of channel gains using Monte-Carlo numerical method. The outage probability is measured from the numerically obtained cumulative distribution of the local average BER to determine the downlink capacity. Results from theoretical computation are compared to the results from computer simulation and discussed.
In 3G CDMA mobile communication systems, high data rate services are essential for many key applications. When an MS approaches the cell border, link performance is degraded and more power should be allocated to maintain the link performance. Since the maximum available signal power is limited, the link adaptation mechanism may diminish the data rate to maintain link performance. This implies that the valid coverage shrinks when the data rate increases. The shrinking of valid coverage under a predetermined data rate will strongly impact on the reliability of high data rate services. In this work, the encoded bit error probabilities of 3G CDMA mobile communication systems, over large-scale and large-small-scale fading channels, were analyzed based on SGA and SIGA methods. Analytic methods were also proposed to investigate the issues of coverage shrinking and service data rate variations. Furthermore, the outage probability, cell coverage percentage and the staying probabilities of available data rates were well examined. The proposed analytic methods can be applied, as a preliminary research, to the design of cellular-system-related techniques, such as QoS control, available data rate prediction, power reservation, and service adaptation.

An FRPA (frequency reuse power allocation) technique by employing the frequency reuse notion as a strategy for overcoming the ICI (intercell interference) and maintaining the QoS (quality of service) at the cell boundary is described for broadband cellular networks. In the scheme, the total bandwidth is divided into sub-bands and two different power levels are then allocated to sub-bands based on the frequency reuse for forward-link cell planning. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a Monte Carlo simulation was performed based on the Chernoff upper bound. The simulation shows that this technique can achieve a high channel throughput while maintaining the required QoS at the cell boundary.
OFDM-based networks utilizing the frequency reuse factor of 1 may produce the severe ICI (intercell interference) at the cell boundary even though overall cell capacity is increased and network deployment is facilitated. In the forward-link, the ICI may rise above a QoS (quality of service) threshold beyond some distance from BSs (base stations). In this paper, we analyze the forward-link capacity of an MC-CDMA system as a function of the ICI according to the distance from a cell. To achieve this goal, a closed form of the outage probability is derived and utilized to obtain the accommodated number of users and system parameters.

For a CDMA system with a single carrier, we consider a call control policy at each cell, which gives priority to handoff calls over new calls while meeting the overall call quality. New calls are first under the call control of the threshold type, and then receive services together with the handoff calls but under the outage restriction guaranteeing a pre-specified call quality. An optimization model with such quality-guaranteeing constraints is formulated, which is to determine the threshold value for each cell, minimizing the new call blocking probability. We propose a solution heuristic, with which a number of simulations are conducted under a variety of traffic environments. The computational experiments evaluate the usefulness of our call control scheme in that handoff calls are given an appropriate level of priority while the system capacity is effectively utilized.

The exact calculation of the ergodic and outage capacity for Rayleigh fading single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channels in the presence of unequal-power Rayleigh fading interferers is mathematically quite challenging due to the complicated distribution of the capacity. In this paper, a SIMO system with M receive antennas and N interferers is considered. Based on some statistical results, the closed-form upper and lower bound for the ergodic and outage capacity are derived respectively. These bounds are shown to be simple to compute and appear to be quite tight.

In cellular systems, a code division multiple access (CDMA) technology with array antennas can significantly reduce interferences by taking advantage of the combination of spreading spectrum and spatial filtering. We investigate performance of cellular CDMA systems through adopting two types of array antennas, switched beam forming (SBF) and tracking beam forming (TBF) in the base station. Through Monte-Carlo simulations, we evaluate average bit-error-rate (BER) and outage probability of the systems under log-normal shadowing channels with multi-cell environment. When we consider 2 beams and 4 beams per sector for the SBF method, it is observed that the TBF method gives at least 10% and 30% capacity improvement over the SBF method in aspects of 10-3 BER and 1% outage probability, respectively.
