Numerical dispersion property is investigated for the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method based on the iterated Crank-Nicolson (ICN) scheme. The numerical dispersion relation is newly derived from the amplification matrix and its property is discussed with attention to the eigenvalue of the matrix. It is shown that the ICN-FDTD method is conditionally stable but slightly dissipative.

This paper introduces a computational approach for transient analysis of extensive scattering problems. This novel method is based on the combination of physical optics (PO) and the fast inverse Laplace transform (FILT). PO is a technique for analyzing electromagnetic scattering from large-scale objects. We modify PO for application in the complex frequency domain, where the scattered fields are evaluated. The complex frequency function is efficiently transformed into the time domain using FILT. The effectiveness of this combination is demonstrated through large-scale analysis and transient response for a short pulse incidence. The accuracy is investigated and validated by comparison with reference solutions.

In this study, the edge diffraction of a TM-polarized electromagnetic plane wave by two-dimensional dielectric wedges has been analyzed. An asymptotic solution for the radiation field has been derived from equivalent electric and magnetic currents which can be determined by the geometrical optics (GO) rays. This method may be regarded as an extended version of physical optics (PO). The diffracted field has been represented in terms of cotangent functions whose singularity behaviors are closely related to GO shadow boundaries. Numerical calculations are performed to compare the results with those by other reference solutions, such as the hidden rays of diffraction (HRD) and a numerical finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. Comparisons of the diffraction effect among these results have been made to propose additional lateral waves in the denser media.

Transcatheter renal denervation (RDN) is a novel treatment to reduce blood pressure in patients with resistant hypertension using an energy-based catheter, mostly radio frequency (RF) current, by eliminating renal sympathetic nerve. However, several inconsistent RDN treatments were reported, mainly due to RF current narrow heating area, and the inability to confirm a successful nerve ablation in a deep area. We proposed microwave energy as an alternative for creating a wider ablation area. However, confirming a successful ablation is still a problem. In this paper, we designed a prediction method for deep renal nerve ablation sites using hybrid numerical calculation-driven machine learning (ML) in combination with a microwave catheter. This work is a first-step investigation to check the hybrid ML prediction capability in a real-world situation. A catheter with a single-slot coaxial antenna at 2.45 GHz with a balloon catheter, combined with a thin thermometer probe on the balloon surface, is proposed. Lumen temperature measured by the probe is used as an ML input to predict the temperature rise at the ablation site. Heating experiments using 6 and 8 mm hole phantom with a 41.3 W excited power, and 8 mm with 36.4 W excited power, were done eight times each to check the feasibility and accuracy of the ML algorithm. In addition, the temperature on the ablation site is measured for reference. Prediction by ML algorithm agrees well with the reference, with a maximum difference of 6°C and 3°C in 6 and 8 mm (both power), respectively. Overall, the proposed ML algorithm is capable of predicting the ablation site temperature rise with high accuracy.

In this paper, a hybrid electromagnetic simulation method of two-dimensional FDTD and ray-tracing methods suitable for an airport surface was proposed. The power variation due to ground reflection, refraction and creeping is calculated by two-dimensional FDTD method and ray-tracing method is used to calculate the reflecting and diffracted powers from buildings. The proposed approach was validated by measurement using a 1/50 scale-model of an airport model with a building model in various positions at 5 GHz. The proposed method allowed measured power distributions to correlate with simulated figures to within 4.8 dB and their null positions were also estimated to an error tolerance of within 0.01 m.

A path loss prediction formula for IoT (Internet of Things) wireless communication close to ceiling beams in the 920MHz band is presented. In first step of our investigation, we conduct simulations using the FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) method and propagation tests close to a beam on the ceiling of a concrete building. In the second step, we derive a path loss prediction formula from the simulation results by using the FDTD method, by dividing into three regions of LoS (line-of-sight) situation, situation in the vicinity of the beam, and NLoS (non-line-of-sight) situation, depending on the positional relationship between the beam and transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) antennas. For each condition, the prediction formula is expressed by a relatively simple form as a function of height of the antennas with respect to the beam bottom. Thus, the prediction formula is very useful for the wireless site planning for the IoT wireless devices set close to concrete beam ceiling.
The hybrid implicit-explicit single-field finite-difference time-domain (HIE-SF-FDTD) method based on the wave equation of electric field is reformulated in a concise matrix-vector form. The global approximation error of the scheme is discussed theoretically. The second-order convergence of the HIE-SF-FDTD is numerically verified.

In this paper, a linear array of 4 leaf-shaped bowtie slot antennas is proposed for use in quasi-millimeter wave band. The slot antennas array is designed to operate at 28GHz frequency band. The leaf-shaped bowtie slot antenna is a type of self-complementary antenna with low profile and low cost of fabrication. The proposed antenna structure offers improvement in radiation pattern, gain, and -10dB impedance bandwidth. Through out of this paper radiation pattern, actual gain, and -10dB impedance bandwidth are evaluated by Finite Different Time Domain (FDTD) simulation. Antenna characteristics are analyzed in the frequency range of 27GHz to 29GHz. To improve antenna characteristics such as actual gain and -10dB impedance bandwidth, a dielectric superstrate layer with relative permittivity of 10.2 is placed on top of ground plane of the slot antennas array. Three antenna structures are introduced and compared. With two layers of dielectric superstrate on top of the antennas ground plane, analysis results show that -10dB impedance bandwidth occupies the frequency range of 27.17GHz to 28.39GHz. Therefore, the operational impedance bandwidth is 1.22GHz. Maximum actual gain of the slot antennas array with two dielectric superstrate layers is 20.49dBi and -3dB gain bandwidth occupies the frequency range of 27.02GHz to 28.57GHz. To validate the analysis results, prototype of the designed slot antennas array is fabricated. Characteristics of the slot antennas array are measured and compared with the analysis results.

Various electromagnetic (EM) wave applications have become commonplace, and humans are frequently exposed to EM waves. Therefore, the effect of EM waves on the human body should be evaluated. In this study, we focused on the specific absorption rate (SAR) due to the EM waves emitted from smartphones, developed high-resolution numerical smartphone models, and studied the SAR variation by changing the position and tilt angle (the angle between the display of the smartphone model and horizontal plane) of the smartphone models vis-à-vis the human abdomen, assuming the use of the smartphone at various tilt angles in front of the abdomen. The calculations showed that the surface shape of the human model influenced the SAR variation.

A grating consisting of a periodic array of InSb-coated dielectric cylinders on a substrate is analyzed at THz frequencies using the frequency-dependent finite-difference time-domain method based on the trapezoidal recursive convolution technique. The transmission characteristics of an infinite periodic array are investigated not only at normal incidence but also at oblique incidence. The incident field is shown to be coupled to the substrate due to the guided-mode resonance (GMR), indicating the practical application of a grating coupler. For the sensor application, the frequency shift of the transmission dip is investigated with attention to the variation of the background refractive index. It is found that the shift of the dip involving the surface plasmon resonance is almost ten times as large as that of the dip only from the GMR. We finally analyze a finite periodic array of the cylinders. The field radiation from the array is discussed, when the field propagates through the substrate. It is shown that the radiation direction can be controlled with the frequency of the propagating field.

Microwave mammography is a promising alternative to X-ray based imaging modalities, because of its small size, low cost, and cell-friendly exposure. More importantly, this modality enables the suppression of surface reflection clutter, which can be enhanced by introducing accurate surface shape estimations. However, near-field measurements can reduce the shape estimation accuracy, due to a mismatch between the reference and observed waveforms. To mitigate this problem, this study incorporates envelope-based shape estimation and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD)-based waveform correction with a fractional derivative adjustment. Numerical simulations based on realistic breast phantoms derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) show that the proposed method significantly enhances the accuracy of breast surface imaging and the performance of surface clutter rejection.

In this paper, we propose an automatic design support system for compact acoustic devices such as microspeakers inside smartphones. The proposed design support system outputs the dimensions of compact acoustic devices with the desired acoustic characteristic. This system uses a deep neural network (DNN) to obtain the relationship between the frequency characteristic of the compact acoustic device and its dimensions. The training data are generated by the acoustic finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method so that many training data can be easily obtained. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system through some comparisons between desired and designed frequency characteristics.

This paper reports a novel 3D topology optimization method based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method for a dielectric lens antenna. To obtain an optimal lens with smooth boundary, we apply normalized Gaussian networks (NGnet) to 3D topology optimization. Using the proposed method, the dielectric lens with desired radiation characteristics can be designed. As an example of the optimization using the proposed method, the width of the main beam is minimized assuming spatial symmetry. In the optimization, the lens is assumed to be loaded on the aperture of a waveguide slot antenna and is smaller compared with the wavelength. It is shown that the optimized lens has narrower beamwidth of the main beam than that of the conventional lens.
An equivalent circuit of Yee's cells is proposed for mixed electromagnetic and circuit simulations. Using the equivalent circuit, a mixed electromagnetic and circuit simulator can be developed, in which the electromagnetic field and circuit responses are simultaneously analyzed. Representing the electromagnetic system as a circuit, active and passive device models in a circuit simulator can be used for the mixed simulations without any modifications. Hence, the propose method is very useful for designing various electronic systems. To evaluate the mixed simulations with the equivalent circuit, two implementations with shared or distributed memory computer system are presented. In the numerical examples, we evaluate the performances of the prototype simulators to demonstrate the effectiveness.

The locally one-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method in cylindrical coordinates is extended to a frequency-dependent version. The fundamental scheme is utilized to perform matrix-operator-free formulations in the right-hand sides. For the analysis of surface plasmon polaritons propagating along a plasmonic grating, the computation time is significantly reduced to less than 10%, compared with the explicit cylindrical FDTD method.

A plasmonic black pole (PBP) consisting of a series of touching spherical metal surfaces is analyzed using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method with the periodic boundary condition. First, the wavelength characteristics of the PBP are studied under the assumption that the PBP is omnidirectionally illuminated. It is found that partial truncation of each metal sphere reduces the reflectivity over a wide wavelength range. Next, we consider the case where the PBP is illuminated with a cylindrical wave from a specific direction. It is shown that an absorptivity of more than 80% is obtained over a wavelength range of λ=500 nm to 1000 nm. Calculation regarding the Poynting vector distribution also shows that the incident wave is bent and absorbed towards the center axis of the PBP.

In this study, a plasma loop tube is presented as a tunable VHF-UHF band plasma antenna. In plasma medium, wave radiation mechanism is due to ionized gas instead of metal. Meanwhile, the most important advantage of plasma elements is electronic tunability rather than the rigid and fixed features of metals. Here, we employ an external magnetic field as a background to affect the plasma without any shape, gas or source manipulation. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) is performed for plasma antenna analysis. The FDTD formulation should be adapted to fluid modeling of plasma in the anisotropic zone in the presence of an external magnetic field. The bandwidth coverage of 700MHz is obtained by designing correctly. Parametric study in return loss, gain and radiation pattern are studied here and other new points are presented as well.
