  • An Evaluation of the Physiological Effects of CRT Displays on Computer Users

    An experiment was conducted to measure and compare the physiological effects of three types of CRT on users. We proposed a new strategy for measuring the user's level of relaxation. In this strategy, called "Task Break Monitoring (TBM)," the subjects took a break with eyes closed after each interaction with the computer. During each break, electroencephalogram (EEG), especially alpha 1 waves, electrocardiogram (ECG) and galvanic skin resistance (GSR) were monitored and recorded. The results show that the type of CRT display which emits far-infrared rays modulated by a FIR-fan induce less fatigue in users while they are working and reduce the recovery time after the task was completed. We believe "TBM" to be an important innovation in human computer research and development because the after effects of computer use have an obvious bearing on recovery time, user endurance and psychological attitude to the technology in general etc.

    Short-circuit photocurrents (ISC) utilizing surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation were investigated for the merocyanine (MC) LB film photoelectric device. The device has a prism/MgF2/Al/MC LB film/Ag structure. In the attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration, SPPs were resonantly excited at the interfaces between MgF2 and Al (MgF2/Al) and between Ag and air (Ag/air). The thickness and the dielectric constants of the layers were evaluated from the ATR measurements. Short-circuit photocurrents, ISCs, as a function of the incident angle of the laser beam were observed simultaneously during the ATR measurements. In the ISC curves, large and small peaks were observed, and the peak angles of the ISC almost corresponded to the dip angles of the ATR curves due to the SPP excitations. Electric fields and optical absorptions in the cell were calculated using the dielectric constants and the film thickness obtained from the ATR measurements. The calculated absorption in the MC layer as a function of the incident angle corresponded to the ISC curve. It was thought that the optical absorption in the MC layer affected directly to the profile of the ISC. Furthermore, the calculated absorption in the cell with the prism and the MgF2 layer exhibited much larger than that of the cell without them. It was estimated that the photocurrents were enhanced by the excitation of SPPs in the ATR configuration.

    Recently, we developed a low power consumption and small total capacitance switched-capacitor filter using a single operational amplifier. It is called a semi-parallel cyclic type (SPCT) filter, in which each capacitance is in proportion to the square root of a transfer function coefficient value. In this paper, we propose the SPCT filter using a single unity gain buffer (UGB). It will be referred to a UGB-SPCT filter. It is possible to use the UGB-SPCT filter over a wider frequency range than the SPCT filter since a UGB has nearly unity gain over a wide frequency range.

    We propose here a time-domain shooting algorithm for calculating the steady-state responses of nonlinear RF circuits containing parasitic elements that is based on both a modified Newton and a secant methods. Bipolar transistors and MOSFETs in ICs have small parasitic capacitors among their terminals. We can not neglect them because they will gives large effects to the shooting algorithm at the high frequency. Since our purpose is to develop a user friendly simulator, we mainly take into account the relatively large normal capacitors such as coupling and/or by-pass capacitors and so on, because the parasitic capacitors are usually smaller and contained in the device models. We have developed a very simple simulator only using the fundamental tools of SPICE, which can be applied to relatively large scale ICs, efficiently.

    Demand for power in Japan has been increasing year by year, and steep demand is projected during daily peak load periods: particularly in summer, due to growing demand for air conditioning. This has resulted in a large gap between day and night demand for power. The daily and seasonal regularity of this demand gap is placing pressure on power utilities to reduce service costs and create a more dependable power supply. This study demonstrates the feasibility of an energy storage system for load leveling based on the electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC). This device is safer, has a longer service life and needs far less maintenance than the secondary cell. The system works to store surplus energy from a commercial AC line in an EDLC bank during the night, and release this energy for use during the daytime peak load period, using a novel interface circuit. This paper focuses in particular on the working principles and experimental results of the interface circuit, which comprises a voltage control oscillator (VCO), a bi-directional DC/DC converter, a bi- directional inverter, and a coupling inductor. The whole circuit is subjected to PLL control, so that automatic connection between DC from an EDLC bank and AC from a commercial power line may take place in a simpler, more reliable and less costly manner. The system allows for energy transfer on the basis of DC voltage as if electric charging and discharging had taken place in a full DC system.

    We demonstrate a large nonlinear optical response of GaAs thin films using degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) with picosecond pulses. The obtained DFWM signal is thickness-dependent and peaks at around 110 nm. The nonlocal theory fully explains these results.

    This paper studies mutually coupled integrate-and-fire type chaotic oscillators. The coupling is realized by impulsive switchings and the system exhibits various synchronous and asynchronous phenomena. We give a basic classification of the chaos synchronization phenomena and their breakdown patterns. The stability of the synchronous states can be confirmed using the piecewise exact solutions, and the basic mechanism of the phenomena can be elucidated by a simple geometric consideration. The typical phenomena are confirmed in the laboratory.

    A management of WWW server is still relying on the expertise and heuristic of administrators, because the comprehensive understandings of server behavior are missing. The administrators should maintain the WWW server with good states that they should investigate the WWW server in real time. Therefore, it is exactly desirable to provide a measurement application that enables the WWW server administrators to monitor WWW servers in the actual operational environment. We developed a measurement application called ENMA (Enhanced Network Measurement Agent) which is specially designed for WWW server state analysis. Furthermore, we applied this application to the large scale WWW server operation to show its implementation and advantages. In this paper, we analyze the WWW server states based on precise monitoring of performance indices of WWW system to help the server management.

  • A Naming, Storage, and Retrieval Model for Software Assets

    This paper presents a model for the naming, packing, version control, storage, and retrieval of software assets. The naming and version control schemes are based on content-derived coding of the asset body. The name-to-asset mapping can be fixed or be varying with time. The packing scheme is designed so that the asset integrity verification and authentication information is made an intrinsic part of the packed asset. A comparison with an existing naming and version control scheme is given. The storage and retrieval scheme is a unification of four most commonly used methods, namely the enumerative method, the keyword-based method, the faceted method, and the text-based method. This unification makes it possible for the users to access heterogeneous repositories (with different storage and retrieval methods) simultaneously, using the same tool set and query syntax. The degradation functions technique is used to automatically broaden queries. A demonstrative retrieval tool is described to show how the unification of methods is done at the user interface level.

    Excitonic optical properties of GaN homoepitaxial layers have been studied by means of magneto-luminescence and time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. The luminescence lines due to the radiative recombination of excitons bound to neutral donors and acceptors have been measured under magnetic field up to 8 T, which was aligned perpendicular and parallel to the hexagonal c-axis. Under the magnetic field aligned perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis, both the donor- and acceptor-bound-exciton lines clearly split into two components, which originated from the Zeeman splitting. The effective g-factors for both the donor- and acceptor-bound excitons were estimated to be 2.02 and 2.47, respectively. Under the magnetic field aligned parallel to the hexagonal c-axis, slight broadening of the bound-exciton lines was observed and the Zeeman splitting was too small to be detected. On the other hand, the diamagnetic shift for both the donor- and acceptor-bound-exciton luminescence lines was observed under the magnetic field aligned both perpendicular and parallel to the hexagonal c-axis. It was found that the diamagnetic shift of the donor-bound exciton was smaller than that of the acceptor-bound exciton. Furthermore, recombination dynamics of excitonic transitions was measured under high-density excitation. An excitation-density-dependent transition of the dominant radiative recombination process from donor-bound excitons to biexcitons was clearly observed in the temporal behavior. In addition, double-exponential decay of biexciton luminescence was observed, which is one of the characteristics of biexciton luminescence at high excitation densities.

    This paper describes the implementation of a Bragg grating-based strain-monitoring system on the Viaduc des Vaux bridge during its construction in 1997 and 1998. The bridge was constructed in a cantilevered, push/pull incremental launching method, and data obtained from two tests were shown to reveal interesting features of the box-girder strain response during the push and pull phases, particularly with regard to limit loads and local buckling. When appropriate, data were compared to data obtained from conventional resistive strain gages and from simple analytical models.

    Since river levee collapse causes great damage, it is socially very important to prevent such disasters by using a monitoring system which can detect changes in the state of a river levee. To investigate the possibility of detecting the collapse of a levee slope at an early stage, we performed an experiment in which we used artificial rainfall and penetration to collapse a full-scale levee model, and measured the change in the levee state using a detection system during collapse. The system consists of sensor plates, a distributed fiber optic strain sensor, and a personal computer. With this system, the stretching produced in the sensor plates by the force resulting from the movement of the soil on the levee slope face is detected as strain by a sensing optical fiber fixed to the plates. Since the distributed fiber optic strain sensor can measure strain continuously and for a long distance along a fiber, it is suitable for monitoring civil structures such as river levees. The experiment confirmed that a change in a levee can be clearly detected when the slope face collapse progresses near the place where the sensor plates are buried. The results suggest the feasibility of being able to foresee the collapse of a levee slope.

    Macrobending characteristics of a newly developed hetero-core splicing sensor is investigated from the viewpoint of the practical use intended both for relatively large distortion monitoring and for liquid adhesion detection. The hetero-core sensor can be simply fabricated by fusion splicing of a hetero-core fiber portion as short as approximately 5 mm in length, which is inserted in a typical low-transmission-loss single mode fiber with a 9-µm core diameter for the wavelength of 1.3 µm as a fiber network line. Two types of the sensor are typically realized in terms of the core diameters of 3 and 5 µm for the inserted hetero-core portion which are referred to as 9-3-9 and 9-5-9 types, respectively , with showing their distinct bending loss characteristics. This paper deals with the explorative applications of the two types of hetero-core sensors in which a bending-to-linear displacement converter and a liquid adhesion sensor are successfully examined using a 9-5-9 structure with its low insertion loss and a cladding interactive 9-3-9 structure with its high sensitivity, respectively. The low-insertion loss 9-5-9 sensor has shown the capability of monitoring millimeters-order distortion in low transmission loss fiber networks. On the other hand, the 9-3-9 type has found to be a prospective sensor for liquid adhesion detection. Operational mechanisms for these two sensors are also discussed in terms both of optical leaks occurring at the hetero-core interfaces and of the build-up of cladding modes which might interrogate the outer cladding boundary conditions of the hetero-core sensor.

  • A Single-Chip Stereo Audio Delta-Sigma A/D Converter with 117 dB Dynamic Range

    A 24-bit, 96 kHz stereo A/D converter (ADC) for DVD-audio has been developed. The single-chip integrates stereo delta-sigma modulators (Δ ΣM's), a voltage reference, and a decimation filter. A fourth-order cascaded Δ ΣM using a local feedback technique was employed to avoid overload without sacrificing noise performance. Low power switched-capacitor techniques were used for implementation. A two-stage decimation filter architecture that reduces digital switching noise was also developed. A merged multi-stage comb filter was used for the first stage, and a bit-serial finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter was used for the second stage. The 18.0 mm2 chip was fabricated in 0.6-µm CMOS with low threshold devices. Measured results show 117 dB A-weighted dynamic range in the 20 kHz passband, with 470 mW power dissipation at 5 V operation.

    In order to investigate the possibility of avatar communication using sign-language, in this paper, we develop a sign-language chatting system on the Internet using CG aniamtion techniques between Korea and Japan. We construct the system in server-client architecture, where images of Korean or Japanese sign-language are analyzed into a series of parameters for sign-language animation by server. We transmit the parameters, which are text data instead of images or their compression, to clients and regenerate the corresponding CG animation using the received data. The chatting system is implemented with Visual C++ 5.0 on Windows platforms. Experimental results show that the sign-language could be used as a communication means between avatars of different languages.

    A MMIC power amplifier operating with a single-supply (3.0 V) has been developed for 5.8 GHz Japanese Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System. The present MMIC contains two FETs, matching circuits (input, intermediate and output matching circuits), and two drain bias circuits. High dielectric constant material SrTiO3 (STO) is used for by-pass and input coupling capacitors. Very small die size of 0.77 mm2 has been realized by using the STO capacitors and negative feedback circuit technology. High 1 dB output gain compression point (P1dB) of 13 dBm, high gain of 21.4 dB and low dissipation current of 41.3 mA have been achieved under 3.0 V single-supply condition.

    Internet communication is increasingly becoming an important element in daily life. Keeping this network safe from malicious elements is an urgent task for network management. To maintain the security level networks are generally, monitored for indications of usage with ill-intentions. Such indications are events which need to be collated, correlated and analyzed in real-time to be effective. However, on an average medium to large size network the number of such events are very large. This makes it practically impossible to analyze the information in real-time and provide the necessary security measures. In this paper, we propose a mechanism that keeps the number of events, to be analyzed, low thereby making it possible to provide ample security measures. We discuss a real-time Intrusion Detection System (IDS) for detecting network attacks. The system looks out for TCP ACK/RST packets, which are generally caused by network scans. The system can extract the tendency of network flows in real-time, based on the newly developed time-based clustering and Dynamic Access Tree creation techniques. The algorithm, implemented and deployed on a medium size backbone network using RMON (Remote MONitoring) technology, successfully detected 195 intrusion attempts during a one month period. The results of the pilot deployment are discussed. In this paper, the proposal, implementation and evaluation will be described.

    This letter is concerned with a new algorithm which can be used to design a time-domain equalizer (TEQ) for xDSL systems employing the discrete multitone (DMT) modulation. The proposed algorithm, derived by neglecting the terms which do not affect the performance of a DMT system in ARMA modeling, is shown to have a good performance compared with the previous TEQ algorithms even with a significantly lower computational complexity. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require the channel impulse response or training sequence, since all processing is made only with the received data.

    We performed 10 Gbit/s optical soliton transmission experiment over 2,000 km with bit error rate of < 10-9 in a comb-like dispersion profiled fiber (CDPF) loop of 80 km amplifier spacing which corresponds to 1.8 times of dispersion distance. By reducing the average dispersion of the CDPF, error free distance of 3,000 km was obtained.

  • On-Line Error Monitoring for Shared Buffer ATM Switches

    Shared buffer ATM switches have been attractive since they can achieve a superior performance in terms of cell loss ratio and throughput with a relatively small buffer size. Shared multi-buffer structures have also been considered by several researchers to enhance the access speed of the cell memory for a large switch. High quality services, however, cannot be provided without reliable operation at each module comprising the ATM switches. In this paper, we present a novel on-line error monitoring technique for shared-buffer ATM switches. The technique detects almost all of the functional errors that could occur in the ATM switches. Moreover, it can detect errors with small hardware overhead and negligible time overhead. An early detection of functional errors in ATM switches could not only reduce the wasted bandwidth due to the transmission of erroneous cells, but greatly enhance the recovery time.
