  • Standardization Status on Carrier Class Ethernet OAM Open Access

    This paper shows the recent standardization activities on Ethernet OAM functions. First, it briefly introduces recent carrier class Ethernet services indicating their characteristics and operational issues. Then, it explains current standardization status on Ethernet OAM functions. Finally it shows the requirements for Ethernet OAM functions and details of the OAM mechanisms currently being standardized by ITU-T SG13, SG15 and IEEE 802.1 WG.

  • Gamma Modeling of Speech Power and Its On-Line Estimation for Statistical Speech Enhancement

    This study shows the effectiveness of using gamma distribution in the speech power domain as a more general prior distribution for the model-based speech enhancement approaches. This model is a super-set of the conventional Gaussian model of the complex spectrum and provides more accurate prior modeling when the optimal parameters are estimated. We develop a method to adapt the modeled distribution parameters from each actual noisy speech in a frame-by-frame manner. Next, we derive and investigate the minimum mean square error (MMSE) and maximum a posterior probability (MAP) estimations in different domains of speech spectral magnitude, generalized power and its logarithm, using the proposed gamma modeling. Finally, a comparative evaluation of the MAP and MMSE filters is conducted. As the MMSE estimations tend to more complicated using more general prior distributions, the MAP estimations are given in closed-form extractions and therefore are suitable in the implementation. The adaptive estimation of the modeled distribution parameters provides more accurate prior modeling and this is the principal merit of the proposed method and the reason for the better performance. From the experiments, the MAP estimation is recommended due to its high efficiency and low complexity. Among the MAP based systems, the estimation in log-magnitude domain is shown to be the best for the speech recognition as the estimation in power domain is superior for the noise reduction.

    In this paper, we present a new all-digital carrier recovery loop for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal constellations. The proposed approach is a blind phase-frequency detector structure that consists of a phase detector, a phase offset estimator, a frequency offset estimator, and a digital control oscillator. Compared to previous related approaches, the proposed algorithm provides a wider acquisition range and a more accurate estimation of frequency and phase offsets. These features are demonstrated by simulation results of the DOCSIS (Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specifications) cable modem system.

    This paper describes the measurement techniques of emissions from UWB devices discussed in ITU-R task group (TG) 1/8 to study the compatibility between ultra-wideband (UWB) devices and radiocommunication services. This paper also provides the background idea behind the measurement methods, as the final output of the discussion, i.e. ITU-R Recommendation, will not contain any citations to the references, nor any "educational" description of the theoretical background.

    Orthogonal modulation provides low probability of bit error, however its bandwidth efficiency is very low. Biorthogonal code may double the bandwidth efficiency, but its required bandwidth grows exponentially with the number of input bits as in orthogonal modulation. In this paper, we propose a multi-code biorthogonal code keying (MBCK) scheme that significantly reduces the signal bandwidth with the benefit from orthogonal waveform coding maintained. The system consists of multiple waveform coding blocks, and the sum of output codewords is transmitted. A problem with MBCK is that output signal is multi-level, which requires amplifier with high linearity. So it may not be an appropriate scheme for portable unit where power efficiency is highly important. We also propose a modified MBCK scheme that guarantees constant amplitude output. The transmitter of the proposed scheme contains a redundant waveform coder whose input is generated by encoding the information bits. Adding the codewords from all constituent waveform coding blocks, the composite signal has constant amplitude. It is also shown that the redundant bits are not only used to make constant amplitude signal but also used to improve the BER performance at the receiver.

    A new automatic-threshold-control (ATC) system for the amplitude-shift-keying (ASK) transceivers without using automatic gain control (AGC) was developed. When signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in a transmission system fluctuates, the new system optimizes the threshold by statistic processing. In this paper, the schematic block diagram, the theory of statistical processing, and the performance estimated by numerical simulations are shown. The simulations show that under ideal conditions, the system can control the threshold voltage in a broad SNR region (wider than 20 dB). Delay of response and trapping in real situation can occur, but, the problems can be avoided by waveform shaping. It is thus concluded that the new ATC system can be applied to ASK transceivers.

  • Evaluation of Shoulder Muscular Fatigue Induced during Mouse Operation in a VDT Task

    This study was designed to evaluate localized muscular fatigue induced during mouse operation in a VDT task. Ten male undergraduates from 19 to 23 years old participated in the experiment. The subject performed a pointing task with a PC mouse for about 4 hours. The EMG measurements and psychological rating of fatigue were conducted before the experimental task and after each 30-minutes block during the experimental task. The changes in the Mean Power Frequency (MPF) and Percentage Maximum Voluntary Contraction (%MVC)-shift for the constant cumulative probability in the Amplitude Probability Distribution Function (APDF) with time were explored. The correspondence between the index (MPF or APDF) and the subjective rating of localized muscular fatigue was also examined. The performance was nearly constant across all blocks. The psychological rating of fatigue tended to increase with time. The MPF tended to increase with time, although the main effect of block (time) was not statistically significant. The %MVC-shift tended to increase with time. The correspondence with the perceived sensation of localized muscular fatigue was higher when using the %MVC-shift than when using the MPF. Based on the results, the effectiveness of the indexes used for evaluating localized muscular fatigue was discussed. The %MVC-shift obtained from the APDF was found to be a sensitive index of localized muscular fatigue and corresponded well with the subjective rating of localized muscular fatigue.

    Recently, Boneh et al. proposed provably secure short signature schemes in the standard model and in the random oracle model respectively. In this letter, we propose strong-key substitution attacks on these signature schemes. In one of the attacks, we show that an adversary can generate a new public key satisfying all legitimate signatures created by the legitimate signer.

    Power distribution in multilayered periodic waveguides is first analyzed by longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT). Novel effective characteristic impedances of the equivalent network for TE and TM modes are then derived, and a symmetrical grating guide with three layers is rigorously evaluated to clarify the validity of our approach. Excellent agreement between our results and the results due to other methods indicates that our approach is able to not only reveal all the physical meaning embedded in the multilayered and multi-sectional periodic waveguides, but also predict various possible Bragg regimes rigorously and simply.

    Borrowing the notion of instantaneous frequency that was developed in the context of time-frequency signal analysis, an instantaneous frequency amplitude spectrum (IFAS) is introduced for estimating fundamental frequency of speech signal in both noiseless and adverse environments. We define harmonicity measure as a quantity that indicates degree of periodical regularity in the IFAS and that shows substantial difference between periodic signal and noise-like waveform. The harmonicity measure is applied to estimate the existence of fundamental frequency. We provide experimental examples to demonstrate the general applicability of the harmonicity measure and apply the proposed procedure to Japanese continuous speech signals. The results show that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods with or without the presence of noise.

    Spectral-amplitude coding (SAC) techniques in fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG)-based optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) systems were investigated in our previous work. This paper adopts the same network architecture to investigate the simultaneous reductions of multiple-access interference (MAI) and optical beat interference (OBI). The MAI is caused by overlapping wavelengths from undesired network coder/decoders (codecs) while the OBI is induced by interaction of simultaneous chips at adjacent gratings. It is proposed that MAI and OBI reductions may be obtained by use of: 1) a source spectrum that is divided into equal chip spacing; 2) coded FBGs characterized by approximately the same number of "0" and "1" code elements; and 3) spectrally balanced photo-detectors. With quasi-orthogonal Walsh-Hadamard coded FBGs, complementary spectral chips is employed as signal pairs to be recombined and detected in balanced photo-detectors, thus achieving simultaneous suppression of both MAIs and OBIs. Simulation results showed that the proposed OCDMA spectral-amplitude coding scheme achieves significant MAI and OBI reductions.

  • Microphone Array with Minimum Mean-Square Error Short-Time Spectral Amplitude Estimator for Speech Enhancement

    This paper describes a new speech enhancement system that employs a microphone array with post-processing based on minimum mean-square error short-time spectral amplitude (MMSE-STSA) estimator. To get more accurate MMSE-STSA estimator in a microphone array, modification and refinement procedure are carried out from each microphone output. Performance of the proposed system is compared with that of other methods using a microphone array. Noise removal experiments for white and pink noises demonstrate the superiority of the proposed speech enhancement system to others with a microphone array in average output SNRs and cepstral distance measures.

    This paper presents a newly developed noise post-processing (NPP) algorithm and the results of several tests demonstrating its subjective performance. This NPP algorithm is designed to improve the subjective performance of low bit-rate code excited linear prediction (CELP) decoding under background noise conditions. The NPP algorithm is based on a stationary noise generator and improves the subjective quality of noisy signal input. A backward adaptive detector defines noisy input signal frames from decoded LSF, energy, and pitch parameters. The noise generator estimates and produces stationary noise signals using past line spectral frequency (LSF) and energy parameters. The stationary noise generator has a frame erasure concealment (FEC) scheme designed for stationary noise signals and therefore improves the speech decoder's robustness for frame erasure under background noise conditions. The algorithm has been applied to the following CELP decoders: 1) a candidate algorithm of the ITU-T 4-kbit/s speech coding standard and 2) existing ITU-T standards, the G.729 and G.723.1 series. In both cases, NPP improved the subjective performance of the baseline decoders. Improvements of approximately 0.25 CMOS (CCR MOS: comparison category rating mean opinion score) and around 0.2-0.8 DMOS (DCR MOS: degradation category rating mean opinion score) were demonstrated in the results of our subjective tests when applied to the 4-kbit/s decoder and G.729/G.723.1 decoders respectively. Other test results show that NPP improves the subjective performance of a G.729 decoder by around 0.45 in DMOS under both error-free and frame-erasure conditions, and a further improvement of around 0.2 DMOS is achieved by the FEC scheme in the noise generator.

  • Evaluation of Cognitive Function Using Event-Related Potential (P300 and CNV): Comparison among Young, Middle-Aged, and Elderly People

    Using event-related potential (P300 and CNV), the cognitive function of elderly subjects was compared with that of young subjects. It was found that the prolonged cognitive information processing induced by aging was reflected in the P300 and N400 latency. The effects of aging were not observed in the P300 amplitude. The CNV measurements, in the range of this study, did not reflect the effects of aging. This might be because the CNV reflects a higher cognitive function as compared with P300 and the effects of aging do not appear in such a function. The data also suggested that the cognitive style must be taken into account when evaluating the deterioration of cognitive functions with aging.

    This paper proposes a robust method for estimating the fundamental frequency (F0) in real environments. It is assumed that the spectral structure of real environmental noise varies momentarily and its energy does not distribute evenly in the time-frequency domain. Therefore, segmenting a spectrogram of speech mixed with environmental noise into narrow time-frequency regions will produce low-noise regions in which the signal-to-noise ratio is high. The proposed method estimates F0 from the periodic and harmonic features that are clearly observed in the low-noise regions. It first uses two kinds of spectrogram, one with high frequency resolution and another with high temporal resolution, to represent the periodic and harmonic features corresponding to F0. Next, the method segments these two kinds of feature plane into narrow time-frequency regions, and calculates the probability function of F0 for each region. It then utilizes the entropy of the probability function as weight to emphasize the probability function in the low-noise region and to enhance noise robustness. Finally, the probability functions are grouped in each time, and F0 is obtained as the frequency with the highest probability of the function. The experimental results showed that, in comparison with other approaches such as the cepstrum method and the autocorrelation method, the developed method can more robustly estimate F0s from speech in the presence of band-limited noise and car noise.

    An analysis of the phase difference spectrum between two images allows precise image shift detection. Image shifts are directly evaluated from the phase difference spectrum without Fourier inversion. In the calculation, the weight function containing the frequency and the cross spectrum is used and an unlapping procedure is carried out. In an experiment using synthetic and real images of typical image patterns, accuracy as high as 0.01-0.02 pixel was achieved stably and reliably for most of the image patterns.

    This paper describes feasibility of a proposed fixed wireless access system with CDMA technology. The system adopts a primary modulation of 16 QAM and the same frequency allocation in all cells to improve spectral efficiency. The system capacity is 1 Gbps per cell within 120 MHz bandwidth. The number of available orthogonal codes corresponds to the orthogonal code length in the system. All subscribers can attain an error free condition with output power control in the presence of inter-cell interference. The following two items are considered to examine the proposed system feasibility. 1) A test modem is fabricated, and a back-to-back modem BER performance is measured. An inter-symbol interference (ISI) level of the modem is estimated with the measured performance. 2) A computer simulation of down-link power control is carried out considering inter-cell interference and impairment factors of the power control such as intra-sector interference caused by the ISI and limited ranges of total and relative output power controls. The simulation results show that the proposed system would be feasible because the obtained power penalties caused by the above impairment factors are negligible.

    In this paper, using the exact expression for the pairwise error probability derived in terms of the message symbol distance between two message vectors rather than the codeword symbol distance between two transmitted codeword matrices, the exact closed form expressions for the symbol error probability of any linear orthogonal space-time block codes in slow Rayleigh fading channel are derived for QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM, and 2 56-QAM.

    The objective of this paper is to study the relationship between a visual stimulus and the amplitude and phase of the alpha wave as a first step to investigating a change in the background wave after a sensory stimulus and an evoked potential. We examined the effect of a single visual stimulus on the amplitude and phase of alpha waves using the complex demodulation method. The visual stimuli were generated by an LED mounted in goggles with the eyes-closed condition. The amplitude of the alpha wave decreased gradually after the stimulus, until it reached a minimum at around 300 ms after the stimulus. The alpha wave continued to increase, showing some rebound, and returning again to the pre-stimulus level. The phase variation after the stimulus tends to be considerably larger than that before the stimulus. Moreover, the average phase returned to the same slope as the pre-stimulus by 2550 ms after the stimulus. The visual stimulus has an effect on the alpha wave until about 2500 ms after the stimulus. The phase variation difference before and after stimulus is significant from 112 ms to 678 ms after the stimulus. This finding suggests there is a partially pararell time course between the change in VEPs plus ERP complex and the alpha wave.
