  • An Image Trading System Using Amplitude-Only Images for Privacy- and Copyright-Protection

    This paper introduces amplitude-only images to image trading systems in which not only the copyright of images but also the privacy of consumers are protected. In the latest framework for image trading systems, an image is divided into an unrecognizable piece and a recognizable but distorted piece to simultaneously protect the privacy of a consumer and the copyright of the image. The proposed scheme uses amplitude-only images which are completely unrecognizable as the former piece, whereas the conventional schemes leave recognizable parts to the piece which degrades privacy protection performance. Moreover, the proposed scheme improves the robustness against copyright violation regardless of the used digital fingerprinting technique, because an amplitude-only image is larger than the piece in the conventional scheme. In addition, phase-only image is used as the second piece in the proposed scheme, the consumer can confirm what he/she bought. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • A Generation Method of Amplitude-Only Images with Low Intensity Ranges

    In this paper, 1) it is shown that amplitude-only images (AOIs) have quite wide intensity ranges (IRs), and 2) an IR reduction method for AOIs is proposed. An AOI is the inversely transformed amplitude spectra of an image, and it is used in the privacy- and copyright-protected image trading system because of its invisibility. Since an AOI is the coherent summation of cosine waves with the same phase, the IR of the AOI is too large to be stored and/or transmitted. In the proposed method, random signs are applied to discrete Fourier transformed amplitude coefficients to obtained AOIs with significantly lower IRs without distortion while keeping the invisibility of images. With reasonable processing time, high correct watermark extracting rates, inversely quantized AOIs with low mean squared errors, and reconstructed images with high peak signal-to-noise ratios are obtained by a linear quantizer in the proposed method.

    In 2004, Menezes and Smart left an open problem that is whether there exists a realistic scenario where message and key substitution (MKS) attacks can have damaging consequences. In this letter, we show that MKS attacks can have damaging consequences in practice, by pointing out that a verifiably encrypted signature (VES) scheme is not opaque if MKS attacks are possible.

    In situ UV-vis. absorption spectra of cytochrome c adsorbed on ITO electrode was observed with slab optical waveguide spectroscopy combining pulse potential step (PPS) between 0.3 and -0.45 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The amount of cytochrome c adsorbed on ITO electrode was estimated from the amount of coulomb of the peaks in cyclic voltammogram to be about a monolayer coverage in this experimental condition. Spectral change between oxidized and reduced cytochrome c by PPS was finished in about 20 msec with phosphate buffer solution. The results strongly proved that SOWG spectroscopy should be effective for in situ observation of ET reaction kinetics of surface adsorbed molecules.

  • Key Substitution Attacks on Multisignature Schemes

    In this letter, we point out that key substitution attacks should be taken into account for multisignature schemes, which implies that the existing security notions for multisignature schemes are not sufficient. As an example, we show that the multisignature scheme proposed by Boldyreva at PKC'03 is susceptible to key substitution attacks.

    A 60 GHz direct conversion transceiver which employs amplitude/phase imbalance cancellation technique is newly proposed. By using the proposed technique, the receive path of the transceiver achieves less than 0.2 dB of amplitude error and less than 3 of phase error at 60 GHz bands over a 10 GHz bandwidth, which relaxes the design accuracy required for baluns used in the transceiver. It also employs a simple and fast calibration algorithm to adjust the locking range of the divide-by-3 injection locked divider in the phase locked loop. Fabricated in 90 nm CMOS technology, the transceiver achieves a low power consumption of 230 mW in transmit mode and 173 mW in receive mode. The output spectrum of 1.76 Gsps π/2-BPSK/QPSK modulation shows the excellent distortion and spurious suppression that meet the IEEE802.11ad draft standard.

    This paper focuses on the latest research of switching arc both in vacuum and SF6 substitutes in our group. The crucial characteristics of vacuum arc are illustrated, including the motion and distribution of single cathode spot and multiple cathode spots, the influence of axial magnetic field on arc plasma characteristics, the influence of composite magnetic field on cathode jets, and the study of anode activities. Meanwhile, the arc characteristics in SF6 and its substitutes (Ar, CO2 and N2) at different pressures and gap distances are investigated by experiments and simulation.

    Based on a reverse converter algorithm derived from the New Chinese Remainder Theorem I, an algorithm for sign detection of RNS {2n-1, 2n, 2n+1} is presented in this paper. The hardware of proposed algorithm can be implemented using two n-bit additions and one (n+1)-bit comparator. Comparing with the previous paper, the proposed algorithm has reduced the number of additions used in the circuit. The experimental results show that the proposed circuit achieves 17.3% savings in area for small moduli and 10.5% savings in area for large moduli on an average, with almost the same speed. The power dissipations obtain 12.6% savings in average.

  • How Many Pixels Does It Take to Make a Good 4″6″ Print? Pixel Count Wars Revisited

    Digital still cameras emerged following the introduction of the Sony Mavica analog prototype camera in 1981. These early cameras produced poor image quality and did not challenge film cameras for overall quality. By 1995 digital still cameras in expensive SLR formats had 6 mega-pixels and produced high quality images (with significant image processing). In 2005 significant improvement in image quality was apparent and lower prices for digital still cameras (DSCs) started a rapid decline in film usage and film camera sells. By 2010 film usage was mostly limited to professionals and the motion picture industry. The rise of DSCs was marked by a “pixel war” where the driving feature of the cameras was the pixel count where even moderate cost, ∼ $120, DSCs would have 14 mega-pixels. The improvement of CMOS technology pushed this trend of lower prices and higher pixel counts. Only the single lens reflex cameras had large sensors and large pixels. The drive for smaller pixels hurt the quality aspects of the final image (sharpness, noise, speed, and exposure latitude). Only today are camera manufactures starting to reverse their course and producing DSCs with larger sensors and pixels. This paper will explore why larger pixels and sensors are key to the future of DSCs.

  • Efficient Digital Compensation Technique for Path Imbalances in LINC Transmitters Using Complex Gain and Linear Model

    In this paper, a simple and efficient design scheme for digital compensation of path imbalances in linear amplification with nonlinear component (LINC) transmitters is proposed to reduce signal distortion. For the LINC transmitters including path imbalances, an error vector magnitude (EVM) is analyzed and an optimal complex gain that minimizes the EVM is extracted. In addition, a straight-forward compensation scheme for the path imbalances is proposed using a least square method for complex gains of each radio frequency path. The effectiveness of the proposed method is compared with the other digital compensation methods. A LINC transmitter with multi-level quadrature amplitude modulation input signals is experimented to verify the performance of the suggested scheme. The proposed compensator can reduce the EVM and the adjacent channel power ratio of the output signals less than 2% and 45 dBc, respectively.

    This paper investigates the non-data-aided (NDA) carrier frequency estimation of amplitude and phase shift keying (APSK) signals. The true Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for NDA frequency estimation of APSK signals are derived and evaluated numerically. Characteristic and jitter variance of NDA Luise and Reggiannini (L&R) frequency estimator are analyzed. Verified by Monte Carlo simulations, the analytical results are shown to be accurate for medium-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values. Using the proposed closed-form expression, parameters of the algorithm are optimized efficiently to minimize the jitter variance.

  • Reduction of Base-Collector Capacitance in InP/InGaAs DHBT with Buried SiO2 Wires

    In this paper, we report the reduction in the base-collector capacitance (CBC) of InP/InGaAs double heterojunction bipolar transistors with buried SiO2 wires (BG-HBT). In a previous trial, we could not confirm a clear difference between the CBC of the conventional HBT and that of the BG-HBT because the subcollector layer was thicker than expected. In this study, the interface between the collector and the subcollector was shifted to the middle of the SiO2 wires by adjusting the growth temperature, and a reduction in CBC with buried SiO2 wires was confirmed. The estimated CBC of the BG-HBT was 7.6 fF, while that of the conventional HBT was 8.6 fF. This 12% reduction was in agreement with the 10% reduction calculated according to the designed size.

    Traditional two-microphone noise reduction algorithms to deal with highly nonstationary directional noises generally use the direction of arrival or phase difference information. The performance of these algorithms deteriorate when diffuse noises coexist with nonstationary directional noises in realistic adverse environments. In this paper, we present a two-channel noise reduction algorithm using a spatial information-based speech estimator and a spatial-information-controlled soft-decision noise estimator to improve the noise reduction performance in realistic non-stationary noisy environments. A target presence probability estimator based on Bayes rules using both phase difference and magnitude squared coherence is proposed for soft-decision of noise estimation, so that they can share complementary advantages when both directional noises and diffuse noises are present. Performances of the proposed two-microphone noise reduction algorithm are evaluated by noise reduction, log-spectral distance (LSD) and word recognition rate (WRR) of a distant-talking ASR system in a real room's noisy environment. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better noises suppression without further distorting the desired signal components over the comparative dual-channel noise reduction algorithms.

    Cognitive radio is an emerging technology to further improve the efficiency of spectrum use. Due to the nature of the technology, it has many facets, including its enabling technologies, its implementation issues and its regulatory implications. In ITU-R (International Telecommunications Union – Radiocommunication sector), cognitive radio systems are currently being studied so that ITU-R can have a clear picture on this new technology and its potential regulatory implications, from a viewpoint of global spectrum management. This paper introduces the recent results of the ITU-R studies on cognitive radio on both regulatory and technical aspects. This paper represents a personal opinion of the author, but not an official view of the ITU-R.

  • An Outphasing Scheme for Reducing Spectral Regrowth of Multi-Tone Signal in LINC Transmitter

    This paper suggests an outphasing scheme to reduce adjacent channel spectral regrowth triggered by the gain and phase mismatch between two signal paths in linear amplification with nonlinear component (LINC) systems. The error vector magnitude and power spectral density of the output signal considering path mismatch are described analytically using path mismatch factor. An outphasing scheme is proposed to reduce the spectral regrowth. The proposed outphasing scheme reshapes the phases of the separated signals in LINC systems to reduce the changes of the phases. Its performance is verified by performing simulations with multi-tone signals. The result shows that the scheme can reduce the spectral regrowth of the multi-tone signals significantly compared to the conventional outphasing scheme for LINC systems with path imbalance.

Accordingly, the power spectra of trajectories include the structural field effect on the phase space.     At Asiacrypt'2001, Courtois, Finiasz and Sendrier proposed the first coding-based signature scheme which is also known as the CFS signature. The CFS signature is seen as one of the candidates of quantum immune signatures. In this letter, we show that the CFS signature is susceptible to both strong-key substitution attacks and weak-key substitution attacks. We also discuss potential countermeasures.

    Using a single-site lightning location technique, a new portable lightning location system is developed. We incorporate an attitude detection technique using inertial sensors to detect an accurate electromagnetic field vector of sferics by palm-sized electromagnetic sensors which can have arbitrary attitude. The present paper describes the concept and the performance of the developed prototype of the portable system.

    A 12 Gb/s 10-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) serial-link transmitter was implemented using a 0.18 µm CMOS process. The proposed 10-PAM transmitter achieves a channel efficiency of 4 bit/symbol by dual-mode amplitude modulations using 10 differential-mode levels and 3 common-mode levels. The measured maximum data-rate was 12 Gb/s over 0.7-m cable and 2-cm printed circuit board (PCB) traces. The entire transmitter consumes 432 mW such that the figure of merit of the transmitter is 36 pJ/bit. The present work demonstrates the greater channel efficiency of 4 bit/symbol than the currently reported multi-level PAM transmitters.

    The air traffic situational awareness is an essential factor for flight safety and efficiency. Today, pilots have only two methods for situational awareness, through visual acquisition or with traffic information via voice messages from Air Traffic Controllers. These methods have limitations in reducing aircraft separation because of their delay in acquiring traffic. To improve the acquisition of traffic information, airborne surveillance with ADS-B/TIS-B has been proposed. This paper reports on the prototype TIS-B system developed by ENRI and on the results of evaluations with flight testing.
