  • Improvement of Extended Symbol-Aided Estimation for Rayleigh Fading Channels

    In this paper we present improved techniques for transmitting M-PSK signals in mobile radio environments. Conventionally an optimal linear combination of the observable fading at the pilot symbols has been used as estimations of all other fading. Recently, an improved technique was proposed by the authors which employs not only the pilot symbols but also the previously estimated fading values on data symbols to extract more information on fading channels. In this paper we present new methods by further improving the above method invented by the authors. The present methods utilize, instead of the estimated fading values on data symbols, the demodulator output normalized by the decided (decoded) data symbols to estimate the fading values in the current frame. We also show by computer simulations for BPSK system that the proposed estimation methods provide better performance than those of the conventional methods.

    CDMA unslotted ALOHA system with finite size of queueing buffers is discussed in this paper. We introduce an analytical model in which the system is divided into two Markov chains; one is in the user part, and the other is in the channel part. In the user part, we can model the queueing behavior of the user station as an M/G/1/B queue. In the channel part, we can consider the number of simultaneously transmitted packets as an M1 + M2/D///K queue. We analyze the queueing system by using this analytical model, and evaluate the effect of buffer capacity in terms of the throughput, the rejection probability and the average delay. As a result, increase in the buffer size brings about an improvement in the grade of service in terms of higher throughput and lower rejection probability.

    Personal communication systems are increasingly required to accommodate not only voice traffic, but also various types of data traffic. Generally speaking, voice traffic is symmetric between uplink and downlink, while data traffic can be highly asymmetric. It is therefore inefficient to accommodate data in a conventional TDMA/TDD system with fixed TDD boundary. In this paper, focusing on the continuous data traffic which requires multi-slots in a circuit based TDMA/TDD system, an algorithm is proposed in which the TDD boundary are moved adaptively to accommodate data traffic efficiently. Comparing with the boundary-fixed conventional algorithm, computer simulations confirm that the proposed algorithm has superior performance in the excessive transmission delay of data while maintaining the performance of voice. The intercell interference between mobiles due to different TDD boundaries is also confirmed to be negligible. Moreover, almost the similar performance improvements of the proposed algorithm are confirmed for two different average message sizes of data calls.

    This paper compares the BER performance of two types of pilot channel-based coherent Rake combining achievable by the use of weighted multi-slot averaging (WMSA) channel estimation filter in DS-CDMA transmission links. One is for the time-multiplexed pilot channel and the other is for the parallel pilot channel. The WMSA channel estimation filter weights and averages the received pilot over a period of several slots to improve the BER performance. We propose the WMSA channel estimation filters for time-multiplexed pilot and parallel pilot structures. Achievable BER performance under frequency-selective fading environments is computer simulated. The simulation results show that almost same BER performance can be achieved for both pilot channel structures when the same energy is allocated to the pilot.

    In this paper, CDMA slotted ALOHA system with finite size of buffers is proposed. To analyze the system performance, we use the linear approximate solution based on restricted occupancy urn models. We evaluate the system performance in terms of throughput, average delay, and rejection probability and clarify the effect of buffer capacity.

    This paper presents a technique to transmit 16QAM signals in mobile radio environments by using extended symbol-aided estimation (ESAE) method for compensating the multipath fading effect. The main results of this paper are the symbol error rate (SER) performance analyses for BPSK and 16QAM systems using the proposed estimation method under Rician fading. The analytical results demonstrate better performance of the proposed systems compared with those of the conventional systems under fast and severe fading, especially in the region of high signal to noise ratio.

    The authors propose a novel waveguide two-way power divider, named as τ-junction, in a feed waveguide of a single-layer slotted waveguide array antenna. This junction occupies only a small space and is placed in the middle of a cascade of several power dividers. It suppresses the long line effect and widens the bandwidth of the feed waveguide. The junction has two inductive walls; one is for suppressing the reflection and the other is for controlling the ratio of divided power to the two output ports. Analysis using Galerkin's method of moments is verified by experiments of a 4 GHz-band model. We install the junctions in a 12 GHz-band single-layer slotted waveguide array. The gain reduction at the band-edge is suppressed.

    This paper proposes a new MAC protocol and physical channel control schemes for TDMA-TDD multi-slot packet channel. The goal of this study is to support both circuit-switched and packet-switched communications on the same resources and to enable high-speed packet transmission using a multi-slot packet channel. In the proposed channel control schemes, three points are taken into account; 1) effective sharing of time slots and frequencies with minimum impact on circuit communications, 2) compatibility with the existing access protocol and equipment, and 3) dynamic allocation of uplink and downlink slots. As for the MAC protocol, we adopt BRS (Block Reservation Scheme) and adaptive access control scheme to the proposed MAC protocol. In addition, to overcome the inherent disadvantage of TDD channels, packet scheduling and access randomizing control are newly proposed in this paper. The results of throughput and delay evaluations confirm that downlink capacity can be drastically enhanced by the dynamic allocation of uplink and downlink slots while corruption under heavy traffic loads is prevented by applying the adaptive traffic load control scheme.

    To further increase the capacity of the DS-CDMA reverse-link, this paper investigates the effectiveness of interference rejection weight control (IRWC) for the pilot symbol-assisted coherent multistage interference canceller (PSA-COMSIC) using recursive channel estimation (RCE). First, a bit error rate (BER) expression of the serial (successive) and parallel type hard decision multistage interference canceller (MSIC) with IRWC using Gaussian approximation for multiple access interference (MAI) are presented for no fading channels. It is theoretically shown that IRWC is effective in mitigating the interference replica generation error in hard decision MSIC. Next, the BER performance of PSA-COMSIC using IRWC in a multipath Rayleigh fading channel when channel coding is applied is evaluated by computer simulations. The BER performance and capacity are evaluated not only for the conventional serial and parallel types but also for serial/parallel (S/P) hybrid type and non-linear/linear (N/L) hybrid type schemes, both of which are effective in significantly reducing the demodulation processing delay. The simulation results demonstrate that, in interference-limited channels where the back ground noise is negligible, the capacity of serial type PSA-COMSIC using IRWC is about 10% higher than that without IRWC. It is also found that if we can accept a slight capacity degradation compared to the serial type PSA-COMSIC, S/P hybrid schemes are effective in reducing the demodulation processing delay.

One of the such development methods is to change an existing specification of the system to obtain the desired specification of the system. However, a very little work has been done to support making changes in formal specifications. In this paper, we propose a mechanism for making changes in formal protocol specifications by adding protocol functions in an existing protocol specification.

    The characteristics of circular polarization from a slot with a parasitic dipole are investigated analytically. It is derived that its phase is linearly dependent upon the angle of the dipole and is independent of that of slot. This interesting behavior is also confirmed by experiments.

    This paper presents a new CLSP/CC (Channel Load Sensing Protocol/Channel Clearance) in order to obtain better performances in spread slotted ALOHA networks. This protocol can decrease a wasteful utilization of channel by prohibiting continuous transmission of the packets destroyed in previous slot, with little added network complexities. For channel clearance technique, hub station broadcasts NAK to all mobile stations when the number of packets transmitted in a slot exceeds the channel capacity, and mobile stations cease own packet transmissions at NAK broadcast. The performances of the proposed CLSP/CC are obtained and compared with those of conventional CLSP by simulations. The performances include network throughput, average processing time and the number of mobile stations in backlogged state. As simulation results, the proposed CLSP/CC outperforms conventional CLSP, especially in highly offered load environment. Also as the proposed CLSP/CC obtain maximum throughputs at higher offered loads and the larger number of mobile stations in backlogged state than the conventional CLSP, it is found that our protocol can support more mobile stations and higher occurrence probabilities.

    Considering that the application of the direct-sequence slotted spread ALOHA communications system to access/control channel is effective in communications systems with traffic channels operating at CDMA mode, the spread ALOHA communications system is discussed in terms of the system configuration and transmission efficiency. The transmission efficiency of the spread ALOHA communications system using a unified spread code is derived by means of two methods. One is based on the simulation of demodulation algorithm, and the other is based on the approximation by modeling. It becomes obvious from quantitative evaluation in terms of the probability of packet success and the throughput performance that the approximated results coincide with the simulated results, and that the modeling is very effective to estimate the transmission efficiency of the spread ALOHA communications system.

    A rigorous analysis of coupling between two twin-slot antennas using the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is reported for the first time. The Phase Cancellation Effect (PGE) is used to reduce the coupling due to the TM0 surface wave mode between the Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) fed cascade-connected twin-slot antennas. To confirm the effectiveness of this approach, coupling between single-slot and twin-slot elements separated by λ0/2 was analysed. The coupling between the two single-slot antennas was S21 = -30.2 dB. For the case of two twin-slot antennas, the coupling was found to be -37.8 dB, 7.6 dB below that of the single-slot antennas. The phase cancellation effect of surface waves is significant in reducing coupling between two twin-slot antennas, in addition to minimising power loss into substrate modes. A memory optimised implementation of the FDTD method with the Berenger Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) Absorbing Boundary Condition (ABC) was used for the numerical analysis.

    The bit error rate (BER) performance against average Eb/No (signal energy per bit-to-noise power spectral density ratio) and the capacity of the pilot symbol-assisted coherent orthogonal filter (PSA-COF) based Rake receiver with fast transmit power control (TPC) are evaluated in DS-CDMA reverse link under multipath Rayleigh fading. Fast TPC, which controls all signals transmitted from users in the same cell or sector such that they are received with equal power at the cell site under fast Rayleigh fading, is essential for the PSA-COF based Rake receiver in the reverse link in order to improve the performance degradation experienced when the received signal level drops due to fading as the transmit power is limited in practical systems. Signal-to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) based fast transmit power control (TPC) is assumed here. By using the fast TPC in reverse link and applying the PSA-COF based Rake receiver to base station (BS), the transmit power of each mobile station (MS) can be significantly reduced, thus increasing link capacity. It is demonstrated that the capacity of the PSA-COF based Rake receiver is about 1.5 times higher than that of the conventional matched filter (MF) receiver in interference-limited channels.

    In this paper the conventional symbol-aided estimation methods are extended to use not only the known pilot symbols but also the previously estimated fading values to extract more information on fading channels. The proposed estimation method is evaluated using theoretical analyses. Recursive formulae are derived for calculating the mean square estimation errors, which are then used to calculate the BER performance of a BPSK system employing the proposed fading estimation method. The results show strong BER performance of the proposed system in the region of high signal to noise ratio under fast fading compared to that of the conventional system. Moreover, the proposed system still sustains its performance under mismatched conditions, where the conventional system degrades exhibiting error floors. Finally the theoretical results are verified by using computer simulations.

    The capture effect caused by some of power assignment, Rayleigh fading, and near-far effect, can improve the performance of random-access techniques in mobile radio environment. Moreover, if we consider the overall effect of them, the system performance can be noticeably improved. In this paper, the combined effect of fixed power assignment scheme, Rayleigh fading, and near-far effect on the performance of slotted ALOHA are studied. Plus, the performance degradation caused by AWGN is also investigated. The type of signal capture to be considered is the one that a signal involved in a collision survives if its power level exceeds the sum of the other signals participating in the same collision. Numerical calculations are used to demonstrate the degree of improvement and degradation.

    Clothoid or cornu spiral segments were used as transition spirals forming C-and S-shaped curves between circles as well as straight lines in various situations of highway road design. These transitions are the center lines of rail, highway road design. The above C and S-shaped form curves consist one or more transition segments. We study the possibility of using the single transition spirals in the situations that use many transition spirals to form smooth transition spline between circles as well as straight lines. We also compute the bounds for the scaling of such single spirals using the practical equation. This paper is aimed to give a method avoiding non-linear equations by finding range for the scaling factor of the clothoids which can take initially an appropriate closer value from this range.

    The CROMACLEAR color display tube has been developed as a display that offers attractive icon quality and highly legible characters. The color display tube is composed of a striped superfine pitch phosphor screen with slot-type shadow mask. We explain the character legibility by Fourier transform. Moreover, the electron beam shape is improved. As a result, the CROMACLEAR color display tube has achieved higher legibility and lower moire phenomenon. This CROMACLEAR color display tube is already mounted in new monitor series.

  • Dynamic Time-Slot Assignment Schemes for TDMA-Based Wireless ATM

    It is indispensable to establish a multi-access protocol and resource management technique that can assure transmission quality and efficiently utilize the radio frequency spectrum for ATM-based wireless access systems. This paper proposes dynamic time-slot assignment schemes for the forward link from a user to a central station (CS): (1) the centralized assignment and release scheme (CAR), and (2) the centralized-assignment and autonomous-release scheme (CAAR). In the proposed schemes, a central station dynamically assigns time-slots based on traffic information obtained by monitoring the input traffic in each radio module (RM). In addition, forward protection is used to prevent false-release of assigned time-slots. Performance evaluations have been carried out by analysis as well as computer simulations. They show that the proposed schemes achieve good performance in delay, link stability, and utilization efficiency of radio resources with an optimized number of forward protection steps.
