  • Channel Allocation Algorithms for Multislot TDMA with Multiclass Users

    This paper proposed a method of slot allocation in a multislot TDMA system when multiple service priorities are supported. The algorithm is tested both in Variable Rate Reservation Access (VRRA) and Advanced TDMA protocols. We exploit the multislot reservation capability to achieve the delay requirements of each priority level. The channel allocation algorithm assumed that all data terminals are capable of multislot reservation. In this case the delay variance can be controlled based on the packet length information and the accumulated delay of each data user. The performance of the system is evaluated using the cumulative delay distribution and mean overall delays for the different user types.

    New series expressing the radiation fields from both axial and circumferential slots on a circular conducting cylinder are derived. These new series converge rapidly even for near fields. This letter includes useful figures showing characteristics of near fields calculated numerically using the new series.

    The authors propose a waveguide π-junction with an inductive wall. Galerkin's method of moments is applied to analyze it and small reflection and desired power division ratio is realized. Good agreement between the calculated result and the measured one verifies the design of a unit π-junction. The characteristics of aπ-junction with a wall are almost the same as those of a conventional π-junction with a post. Important advantage of the new π-junction with a wall is that it can be manufactured in the die-cast process of the waveguide while a post in the conventional one must be attached in an additional process. A 16-way power divider consisting of 8 π-junctions is designed at 11.85 GHz and the characteristics are predicted.

    A radial line slot antenna (RLSA) is a high efficiency and high gain planar antenna. The efficiency of RLSA becomes lower as the aperture size reduces due to rotational asymmetry of the illumination. A concentric array RLSA (CA-RLSA) was proposed to overcome this difficulty. It adopted three new techniques; (1) not spirally but concentrically arrayed slots, (2) a rotating mode feed circuit, (3) matching slot pairs eliminating termination loss. This paper proposes the basic slot design for (1) and (2) of CA-RLSA. Excellent characteristics of very small CA-RLSAs based upon this design are confirmed by measurements.

    This paper discusses a software verification support environment Vega which is based on a model-theoretic methodology that enables verification support for the temporal properties of protocol specifications described in the formal description technique LOTOS. In the methodology of Vega, a protocol specification is defined through the LOTOS process reflecting its practical system structure. The temporal properties to be verified are given as the requirement which the protocol needs to satisfy from the viewpoint of events and are formulated by using the branching time temporal logic defined in this paper. Verification is done by determining whether or not the given temporal properties are satisfied by the model, which corresponds to the transition system derived from the LOTOS specification of the protocol. Vega is provided with an effective interface function, as well as the function of simple model checking based on the above methodology, to give some degree of flexibility for the expression of temporal properties to be verified. Specifically, it allows the user to define useful expressions by combining builtin temporal logic formulas and enter them in Vega for use at any time. With the provision of these functions, Vega is expected to serve as a very powerful and flexible verification support tool.

    An analytical framework to study the nonuniformity in geographical distribution of the traffic load in low earth orbit satellite communication systems is presented. The model is then used to evaluate the throughput performance of the system with direct-sequence packet spread-slotted ALOHA multiple-access technique. As the result, it is shown that nonuniformity in traffic makes the characteristics of the system significantly different from the results of uniform traffic case and that the performance of each user varies according to its location. Moreover, the interference reached from users of adjacent satellites is shown to be one of the main factors that limit the performance of system.

    The interstitial hyperthermia is an invasive heating method applied by inserting the applicator into the human body. We have been studying on coaxial-slot antennas for interstitial microwave hyperthermia. The characteristics of the square antenna array were theoretically examined. Firstly, the basic structure of the antenna, and a simplified analysis model taking account of the effect of the boundary surface were explained. Then analysis was performed by using the moment method. Finally, the calculated results were discussed. The catheter thickness has much effect on the characteristics and must be considered both in designing and in using the antenna. When the array spacing was increased, the effective heating area became larger and more uniform. As the insertion depth was increased, the effective heating area was also enlarged.

  • Evaluation of Transmission Control Method in a Slotted Ring Network

    In this paper, an analysis of a slotted ring type network, the Pierce type ring network, is carried out and characteristics of the ring are derived. The ring type network is one of the fundamental computer network topologies. It is easy to implement and has many merits such as low cost and expansion flexibility. However, possible hogging, or domination of slots by one station, is one of its drawbacks. At first, when we regard vacant slots as usable, we show how system performance is fairly dependent on traffic patterns. We also show quantitatively that when slots are fixed to each station, domination of the ring can be completely prevented, although the performance of the system will be reduced. We propose a method to control the transmission of packets in which we have positively adopted the insertion of shift registers into the transmission line to prevent the deterioration of the performance. With the insertion of shift registers, we show the feasibility of improving the performance of the fixed slot allocation method at the same time as preventing domination of the ring. We will discuss the merits of the shift register insertion method, which is introduced to improve the fixed slot and semi-fixed slot allocation methods. In the slotted ring type system, four types of slot allocation method including a register insertion method are considered for the improvement of the system performance. The merits and demerits of the methods are discussed. We show how system performance depends on the traffic patterns considered. We analyse the characteristics of the ring system under various conditions.

  • Connection-Based Optical Wavelength Division Multiplexed Network with Time Slot Rearrangement

    We have proposed a connection-based optical wavelength division multiplexing network architecture. For the networks such as inter-office LANs, the guarantee of the bandwidths of connection-oriented calls is necessary. Notable features of the network are that multicast can be executed without copying the same data, and that time slots are rearrangeable to increase the throughput. The topology is passive star and a network controller (NWC) is connected to manage the time slot assignment. Each station's transmitting wavelength is fixed and is different from that of other stations. Each receiver changes the receiving wavelength slot by slot. Stations reserve time slots with permission of the NWC. Once a time slot is reserved the station can use the slot in every frame until the reservation is cancelled. This feature guarantees the bandwidths of connection-oriented calls. Upon receiving a time slot request, the NWC searches for a not-in-use slot common to the source station's transmitter (Tx) and the destination station's receiver (Rx). If there is no common empty slot and both the Tx and the Rx have empty slots, the NWC rearranges the already allocated time slots to create a new common empty slot. Simulations were performed to estimate the blocking rates for various cases of call bandwidth including multi-bitrate (the case in which various bandwidth calls are generated in a network) and multicast call, the calculation load of the NWC when it assigns a time slot including rearrangement, and the success rate of rearrangement. It was found that the blocking rate with the rearrangement is greatly reduced (1/10) compared with the case without rearrangement of the same throughput when the number of slots in a frame is more than 120, the number of stations in the network is 60 and the blocking rate without the rearrangement is less than 10-2. Over 100 Gbps throughput can be achieved when the number of slots in a frame is 120-240, the number of stations is 60, the bitrate of a transmitter is 2.5Gbps and the blocking rate is about 10-2. The rearrangement is especially effective in the case of multi-bitrate in which the blocking rate can be reduced to 1/100 that of the case without rearrangement at some point. It is also shown that a slot assignment including rearrangement can be executed sufficiently quickly (5s). These results indicate that practical realization of this access control architecture is possible.

  • Thin-Film Slot Antenna for 700 GHz Submillimeter Wave Radiation

    Thin-film slot antennas for 700 GHz submillimeter wave radiation were designed on the basis of the experimental results obtained at microwave frequency regions, and fabricated with photolithographic methods. The antenna patterns measured for the HCOOH laser radiation agreed well with the theoretical antenna pattern. This shows that the fabricated antenna works as a slot antenna in the 700 GHz submillimeter region.

    In this paper, a waveguide-fed slot-coupled microstrip antenna is proposed as enhanced feeding structure of microstrip antenna and an analysis is pesented. The presence of dielectric substrate between a strip and a slot is explicitly taken into account in this analysis. The evaluation of the antenna characteristics is carried out using the method of moments and the spectral domain approach in terms of the electric current distribution on the strip and the magnetic current distribution on the slot.

  • A Slot Coupled Microstrip Antenna with a Multi-Layer Thick Ground Plane

    A novel thick ground plane is proposed as a support for a slot-coupled microstrip antenna and as a heat sink for an MMIC installed on the back plane of the active array antenna. A multi-layer structure of ground planes is also studied for the benefit of easy installation of MMICs. The influence of this thick metal ground plane with a mono- and multi-layer has been investigated in detail. Both measured and calculated results of VSWR and calculated results of the back lobe are shown in detail. The calculated results of VSWR agree well with the measurements. It is made clear that the thickness of the ground plane can be extended to twenty times that of the antenna substrate while maintaining the antenna's performance. An LNA composing an MMIC was developed, attached to the back of the antenna, and operated at 23 GHz. The measured results of this active element agree well with calculated ones and confirm the applicability of the novel design.

  • Radiation from a Parallel-Plate-Fed Slit in a Thick Conducting Screen

    The radiation behavior of a parallel-plate-fed slit in a thick conducting screen is examined. The Fourier transform and the mode-matching technique are used to obtain simultaneous equations for the transmitted field inside the thick conducting screen. The simultaneous equations are solved to represent the transmitted and scattered fiels in simple series forms. The numerical computation is performed to illustrate the behavior of the radiation from the parallel-plate-fed slit. A substantial reduction in the reflection coefficient is possible by choosing a thickness of the conducting screen.

  • Coding for Multi-Pulse PPM with Imperfect Slot Synchronization in Optical Direct-Detection Channels

    The performance of coded multi-pulse pulse position modulation (MPPM) consisting of m slots and 2 pulses, denoted as (m, 2) MPPM, with imperfect slot synchronization is analyzed. Convolutional codes and Reed-Solomon (RS) codes are employed for (m, 2) MPPM, and the bit error probability of coded (m, 2) MPPM in the presence of the timing offset is derived. In each coded (m, 2) MPPM, we compare the performance of some different code rate systems. Moreover, we compare the performance of both systems at the same information bit rate. It is shown that in both coded systems, the performance of code rate-1/2 coded (m, 2) MPPM is the best when the timing offset is small. Wheji the timing offset is somewhat large, however, uncoded (m, 2) MPPM is shown to perform better than coded (m, 2) MPPM. Further, convolutional coded (m, 2) MPPM with the constraint length k7 is shown to perform better than RS coded (m, 2) MPPM for the same code rate.

  • Effect of a Catheter on SAR Distribution around Interstitial Antenna for Microwave Hyperthermia

    This paper describes that the dielectric characteristics of a catheter around the interstitial antenna have an effect on the wavelength for current, and this effect results in the variation of the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) distribution around the antenna. A theoretical study of SAR distribution ground a coaxial-slot antenna is performed. Analytical technique used is the moment method. Result and discussion on the effect of material and thickness of the catheter are presented. The wavelength for the current shortens with increasing dielectric constant or decreasing thickness of the catheter. Due to this variation of the wavelength for current, the SAR distributions take various shapes.

  • Analysis of a High-Speed Slotted Ring with Single Packet Buffers

    In this paper, we present an analysis of a high-speed slotted ring with a single packet buffer at each station. Assuming that distances between stations affect the network performance only through the sum of themselves (this will be called the "lumpability assumption"), we introduce a model system called the lumped model in which stations are aggregated at a single point on the ring with their relative positions preserved. At the instant when each slot visits the aggregated point of the lumped model, we build a Markov chain by recording the system state of buffers and slots. From the steady state probabilities of the Markov chain, we obtain the mean waiting time and the blocking probability of each station. It will be shown analytically and by simulation that the analysis based on the lumped model yields accurate results for various network conditions.

  • LSI Delivery Management System Using Lot Sampling Scheduling Method for ASIC Production Line

    A novel delivery management system using a new lot sampling scheduling (LSS) method has been developed. The method involves the concepts of "virtual line" and "marker lot," and the system consists of an on-line scheduler executing short-period scheduling for lot-tracking and an off-line scheduler executing long-period scheduling for delivery date simulation. The LSS method can hugely increase the maximum number of lots to simulate the delivery date and also control TAT more effectively compared to conventional dynamic scheduling. Lot progress is controlled by varying the resource allocation ratio for each virtual line. This method is effective for precise delivery date control of lots with various priorities in ASIC production or development lines.

  • Adaptive Circuit Access Control for Network Resource Management

    Circuit access control is a traffic control technique of rejecting calls arriving at a group of specified circuits to make the group free at a target scheduled time so that the capacity may be dynamically reallocated to serve other traffic demand. This technique plays an important role for resource allocation control in state-of-the-art capacity reconfigurable networks as well as for switching calls on a reserved basis in the ISDNs. In this paper, we present a novel adaptive scheme for circuit access control in order to overcome the inefficiency of the conventional deterministic scheme. The presented scheme is based only on knowledge about service time and bandwidth characteristics of calls. The transitional behavior of the circuit group under the scheme is analyzed, and the gain in utilization achieved by the adaptive scheme is examined. We treat a model of the circuit group shared by multi-slot calls with different service times, and describe the results of the transient analysis and the approximation method for evaluating the gains.

  • Proposal and Evaluation of a Method for Accurate Analysis of Glottal Source Parameters

    A new method for the accurate extraction of glottal source parameters is proposed. This method, called Heuristic Analysis-by-Synthesis (HAbS), has been developed specifically to overcome the weaknesses of other methods of glottal source parameter extraction. The specific features of this method are the use of the AbS method for extraction of glottal source and vocal tract parameters, the use of a parametric glottal source model during vocal tract analysis, the use of alternating glottal source and vocal tract analyses, and simultaneous, time-domain analysis of the glottal source parameters and the first formant. This method has been implemented in such a way that user interaction is not required. The performance of the HAbS method is evaluated using both synthetic-speech and natural-speech data. Error is measured in both the time domain and the spectral domain, and the standard deviation of extracted parameter values is computed. In addition, the error in analysis of each glottal-source parameter is computed using synthetic-speech data. In order to assess the accuracy of the HAbS method as compared to other methods, three other methods (LPC, AIF, and AbS) are evaluated using the same data methods of error measurement. From these evaluations, it is clear that the HAbS method yields results that are more accurate than these other methods.

  • A New Approach for Protocol Synthesis Based on LOTOS

    In communication protocols, the behaviour of a protocol entity is related to the behaviour of another protocol entity as they communicate under sets of communication rules (protocols). Thus, it is desirable to concentrate on the design of one protocol entity and generate the corresponding protocol entity automatically. Furthermore, it is desirable that the protocol is formal, precise and unambiguous that is, it is described using FDTs (Formal Description Techniques). In this paper, we propose a protocol synthesis algorithm in which, from a LOTOS specification of a single given entity, LOTOS specification of the corresponding peer entity is generated automatically. Unlike previous works, where FSMs (Finite State Machines) were used to synthesize protocols, we use LOTOS, which is one of FDTs developed by ISO, in our proposed synthesis algorithm. We prove that the generated protocol is logical errors free, collectively represented as deadlock free, if the given entity is in certain forms which are natural in the context of connunication protocols.
