  • The Software Antenna: A New Concept of Kaleidoscopic Antenna in Multimedia Radio and Mobile Computing Era

    Based on a recent remarkable development of digital beamforming (DBF) antenna technologies, we propose a new concept of kaleidoscopic antenna, we call it "software antenna," which is a more general one extending DBF schemes. The software antenna instantly reconfigures itself adapting its software and hardware to changes in the radio-environment. To realize the software antenna, the development of high-speed reconfigurable FPGAs is indispensable. As an intelligent antenna, we believe the software antenna could play a key role in the days of software radio having a function of mobile computing.

  • A Novel FEC Scheme for Differentially Detected QPSK Signals in Mobile Computing Using High-Speed Wireless Access

    This paper proposes a novel FEC (forward error correction) scheme for high-speed wireless systems aiming at mobile computing applications. The proposed scheme combines inner nonredundant error correction with outer parallel encoding random FEC for differentially detected QPSK (quadrature phase shift keying) signals. This paper, first, examines error patterns after the differential detection with nonredundant error correction and reveals that particular double symbol errors occur with relatively high probability. To improve the outer FEC performance degradation due to the double symbol errors, the proposed scheme uses I and Q channel serial to parallel conversion in the transmission side and parallel to serial conversion in the receiving side. As a result, it enables to use simple FEC for the outer parallel encoding random FEC without interleaving. Computer simulation results show the proposed scheme employing one bit correction BCH coding obtains a required Eb/No improvement of 1.2 dB at a Pe of 10-5 compared to that with the same memory size interleaving in an AWGN environment. Moreover, in a Rician fading environment where directional beam antennas are assumed to be used to improve the degradation due to severe multipath signals, an overall Eb/No improvement at Pe of 10-5 of 3.0 dB is achieved compared to simple differential detection when the condition of delay spread of 5 nsec, carrier to multipath signal power ratio of 20 dB and Doppler frequency at 20 GHz band of 150 Hz.

In the future, the number of mobile communication system users will increase even faster, until the rate of diffusion ultimately reaches that of telephones. The day that each person has his own portable mobile terminal is not so far off. Moreover, the systems will not only be used as telephones but also as mobile computing for multimedia information. Digitalization technologies of mobile communication systems needed to realize such mobile computing will be introduced in this paper.

    This paper proposes the use, in integrated wireless systems, of the Reserved Idle Signal Multiple Access with Collision Resolution (R-ISMA/CR) protocol for applications in future multimedia mobile communications. It is applied to the integrated voice and data wireless system. Moreover, the consideration is made of the integrated voice and the low-bit video wireless system in R-ISMA/CR. To integrate video we employed not only a packed discard for video packets when the video packet delay is more than a threshold value, but also the connection packet (CP) technique for improving the channel utilization. Finally the integration of voice, data, and low-bit-video wireless system in R-ISMA/CR is considered. The performance are evaluated mainly by simulations.

    The computers are connected with each other by the network as a result of the progress of technology in the field of the computer and network, and then all of the data to be processed are transferred quickly and at the real-time through the computer network. However the user can use the computer system at any time, the user must go to the location of the computer system to use the computer resources. The necessities for using the computer system occur anywhere and anytime in spite of the location of the computer system. For this requirement the mobile computing environment (MCE) is expected strongly. In this paper we introduce the model of MCE and discuss the need of the user authentication at entering and logging-in the network in MCE only with a user ID. We propose the method of a user ID assignment from which a server ID can be decided by a simple logical operation. Also, we propose a protocol for a user authentication in MCE and discuss the robustness of security against the various attacking on the route.

  • A Dynamic Channel Assignment Algorithm for Voice and Data Integrated TDMA Mobile Radio

    It is highly desirable to develop an efficient and flexible dynamic channel assignment algorithm in order to realize an integrated traffic TDMA mobile radio communication network. In this paper, an integrated traffic TDMA system is studied in which transmission of voice and data are assumed to occupy one and n time slots in each TDMA frame, respectively. In general, there are two types of channel (time slot) assignment algorithms: the partitioning algorithm and the sharing algorithm. However, they are not well-suited to the multimedia traffic consisting of various information sources that occupy different number of slots per frame. In this paper, assuming that voice is much more sensitive to transmission delay than data, an algorithm based on the sharing algorithm with flexible tima slot management scheme is proposed. Our method tries to vary the number of data slots adaptively so as to improve the quality of servive of voice calls and the system capacity. Computer simulations show the good performance of the proposed algorithm when compared to conventional channel assignment algorithms.

  • A Study on Reducing Transmission Delay in Mobile Video Communication Systems

    Applying ARQ to real time video communication can significantly increase transmission delay due its retransmission operations. We analyze this delay and propose an adaptive error control scheme that uses acknowledgment from the receiver to reduce the delay. We evaluate this scheme using a computer simulation and show that the proposed scheme can reduce the delay by controlling the amount of video data by changing the quantization step size and video frame skipping. It also offers acceptable video quality as confirmed by a subjective evaluation test.

    A small-sized three-stage GaAs power module has been developed for portable digital radios using M-16QAM modulation. This module has exhibited typical P1dB of 10 W with PAE of 48% and a power gain of 35 dB at a low supply voltage of 6.5 V in 1.453-1.477 GHz band. The volume of the module is only 1.5 cc, which is one of the smallest value in 10 W class modules ever reported. In order to realize the reduced size and the high power performances simultaneously, the module has employed new power divider/combiner circuits with significant features of the reduced occupation area, the improved isolation properties and the function of second-harmonic control.

    This paper optimizes a hierarchical image transmission system based on the hierarchical modulation scheme in a band-limited Rayleigh fading channel. Authors analyze relations between hierarchical parameters and the image quality, and show that the existence of optimum hierarchical parameter that maximizes the received image quality.

  • Dosimetric Evaluation of Handheld Mobile Communications Equipment with Known Precision

    Recently several dosimetric assessment procedures have been proposed to demonstrate the compliance of handheld mobile telecommuications equipment (MTE) with safety limits. However, for none of these procedures has an estimation of the overall uncertainty in assessing the maximum exposure been provided for a reasonable cross-section of potential users. This paper presents a setup and procedure based on a high-precision dosimetric scanner combined with a new phantom derived from an anatomical study. This allows the assessment of the maximum spatial peak SAR values occurring in approximately 90% of all MTE users, including children, with a precision of better than 25%. This setup and procedure therefore satisfies the requirements of the FCC, as well as those drafted by a CENELEC working group mandated by the European Union.

    In this paper, we propose a handoff scheme with two-level priority for the reservation of handoff request calls in mobile cellular radio systems. We assume two types of mobile subscribers with different distributions of moving speed, that is, users with low average moving speed (e.g., pedestrians) and high average moving speed (e.g., people in moving cars). A fixed number of channels in each cell are reserved exclusively for handoff request calls. Out of these number of channels, some are reserved exclusively for the high speed handoff request calls. The remaining channels are shared by both the originating and handoff request calls. In the proposed scheme, both kinds of handoff request calls make their own queues. The system is modeled by a three-dimensional Markov chain. We apply the Successive Over-Relaxation (SOR) method to obtain the equilibrium state probabilities. Blocking probabilities of calls, forced termination probabilities and average queue length of handoff calls of each type are evaluated. We can make the forced termination probabilities of handoff request calls smaller than the blocking probability of originating calls. Moreover, we can make the forced termination probability of high speed handoff request calls smaller than that of the low speed ones. Necessary queue size for the two kinds of handoff request calls are also estimated.

    In this paper, we evaluated performance of mobile exchange control network. Queueing network model is used for modeling of mobile exchange control network. We developed a call control processing and location registration scenario that has a message exchange function between processors in mobile exchange control network. The network symbols are used the simulation models that are composed of the initialization module, message generation module, message routing module, message processing module, message generation module, HIPC network processing module, output analysis module. As a result of computer simulation, we obtain the processor utilization, the mean queue length, the mean waiting time of control network based on call processing and location registration capacity. The call processing and location registration capacity are referred by the number of call attempts in the mobile exchange and must be satisfied with the quality of service (delay time).

  • A 2.7-V Quasi-Microwave Si-Bipolar Quadrature Modulator without Tuning

    A 2.7-V Si-bipolar quadrature modulator with a 90 phase shifter consisting of a frequency doubler and a master-slave flip-flop is described. The modulator operates over a wide bandwidth (0.95 to 1.88 GHz) without any tuning or adjustments. It is implemented using 20-GHz Si-bipolar technology and dissipates 97 mW at 2.7 V. An image ratio of less than -40 dBc is obtained between 1.1 and 1.8 GHz. Moreover, third-order harmonic products are less than -40 dBc and carrier leakage is less than -30 dBc.

    This paper proposes a new approach for distributing millimeter wave signals from a central location to micro-base-stations using optical fiber links. The links utilize two Mach-Zehnder external optical modulators (EOMs) to perform all optical down-conversion, eliminating the need for a local oscillator or laser diode in the micro-base-station. A simple model of the EOMs is developed to illustrate the principle of dual-EOM mixing. The characteristics of conversion loss and intermodulation are examined for two cases: where the EOMs are operated in the linear mode and where the local oscillator's EOM is biased as a frequency doubling modulator. Additionally, we examined the use of an optical amplifier to reduce conversion loss for these two cases. The measured conversion loss of the link was 82 dB, and we estimated this could be reduced to about 48 dB by employing an optical amplifier and a more efficient EOM for RF reception.

    A Reed-Solomon coded Type-I Hybrid ARQ scheme based on a Selective-Repeat (SR) ARQ with multicopy retransmission is proposed for mobile/personal satellite communication systems of a transmitter and a receiver both with the finite buffer. The performance of the proposed scheme on fading channels is analyzed. The basic idea of the strategy is the use of two modes; the SR mode and the multicopy mode. In the latter mode, erroneous blocks stored in the transmitter buffer are alternatively retransmitted multiple times when ν consecutive retransmissions in the SR mode are received in error. Numerical and simulation results for ν1 show that the proposed scheme presents better performance than the conventional SR+ST scheme 2 of the 2N block buffer by Miller and Lin.

    This paper evaluate the performance of a PN (pseudonoise) code acquisition for a direct-sequence/code-division-multiple-access (DS/CDMA) system in a mobile satellite environment. The acquisition scheme considered consists of a parallel matched-filter and a FFT processor. The uplink of mobile satellite channel is modeled as shadowed Rayleigh fading channel. The effects of power control error and shadowing are considered in the analysis of acquisition performance. It is shown that the power control error causes acquisition to be slower than the case of perfect power control, and for high SNR/chip, the effect of power control error becomes less significant. It is also shown that the case with heavy shadowing takes longer time to achieve acquisition than that with light shadowing. For the subinterval-based PN code search, the parallel MF scheme is thought to be more appropriate than the serial MF scheme at the cost of complexity. The analysis in the paper can be applied to the uplink of a DS/CDMA system for packet-type services in a mobile satellite channel.

    Periodic reservation allows periodic and random packets to share the same satellite random access channel efficiently. The periodic reservation protocol is particularly suitable for mobile satellite position reporting services, where some of the information messages, such as dispatch function, are classified as "periodic" and others, such as signaling, are classified as "random." When a new mobile terminal logs on to the system, Network Management Center (NMC) reserves subsequent time slots for transmitting periodic packets without contention. A mobile terminal recognizes each time slot as "reserved" or "unreserved (available)" according to the broadcast message received from NMC. Other random packets use the slotted ALOHA protocol to contend with other mobile terminals for an unreserved time slot. The performance results suggest that the use of the periodic reservation protocol can be regarded as a viable solution for mobile satellite position reporting services such as automatic dependent surveillance (ADS).

    In this contribution an algorithm for joint detection in fast frequency hopping/multiple frequency shift keying (FFH/MFSK) multiple access (MA) systems is presented. The new algorithm - referred to as REC algorithm - evaluates ambiguities which occur during the decision process and iteratively reduces the number of candidate symbols. The REC algorithm is of low complexity, suitable for every addressing scheme, and effective for both an interference-only channel and a fading channel. For the interference-only channel the REC algorithm enables maximum likelihood (ML) joint detection with low computational effort.

    In this paper, we describe effects of oddcorrelation functions and band-limitation filters for direct-wave reception systems using broadband spread-spectrum (B-SS) techniques. The receiver of this system is synchronized to the direct-wave. First, the effects of odd-correlation functions are investigated by using M-sequences and random sequences. The effects of even-correlation functions for those sequences can be easily obtained by using results of effects of odd-correlation functions for random sequences. Here we derive a novel function of odd-correlation variance for M-sequence, which is obtained theoretically. Consequently, we show the advantage of M-sequence which is used as spreading sequence. As a reason, in the odd-correlation function of M-sequence, small values are taken near the synchronous phase where harmful scattered-waves exist, strongly. Next, the effects of both odd-correlation function and band-limitation filter are studied by using several kinds of filters. Here we discuss the difference of characteristics in case that despreading sequence of bandlimited pulse or that of rectangular pulse is used in the correlator of the receiver. The technique despreading by rectangular pulse can be achieved a high speed signal processing and equipment miniaturizing because of utilization of switching circuit. We show the advantage of despreading sequence of rectangular pulse, when the limitation bandwidth of transmitting signal takes a small value. Because the characteristics of the correlation function between transmitting sequence of bandlimited pulse and despreading sequence of rectangular pulse can be kept better than that between the transmitting sequence and despreading sequence of bandlimited pulse. As these results, in severe bandlimited direct-wave reception systems using B-SS techniques, M-sequence of rectangular pulse as despreading sequence is most suitable.
