  • Effect of Dimension of Conducting Box on Radiation Pattern of a Monopole Antenna for Portable Telephone

    The relation between the radiation pattern and the dimension of the conducting box for a portable telephone is illustrated both theoretically and experimentally. The Galerkin-moment method using the Fourier series expansion for the surface current of the conducting box, which has a great advantage of having a high accuracy, is employed to obtain the radiation pattern. As an example of antennas, a quarter-wavelength monopole antenna having a sinusoidal current distribution is used. As a result, it is pointed out that the radiation pattern of a monopole antenna mounted on the box tends to tilt in a lower direction both in theory and in experiment as well. The relation between the radiation pattern and the location of the monopole antenna is also described. An asymmetrical, or distorted pattern is observed when the monopole antenna moves away from the center of the top plane.

    This paper describes and analyzed several indices in assessing algorithms of data compression of electrocardiograms, such as the cross correlation (CC), the percent root mean square difference (PRD), and a new measure of standardized root mean square difference (SRD). Although these indices are helpful to objectively evaluate the algorithms, the visual examination of the reconstructed waveform is indispensable to decide the optimal compression ratio. This paper presents the clinical significance of selected waveforms which are prone to be distorted or neglected in the restored waveforms but are crucial for cardiologists to diagnose the patient. A database of electrocardiograms is also proposed for the comparative evaluation of compression algorithms.

    It was more than 10 years ago that the first map navigation system, as an example of invehicle information system, has appeared in the market in Japan. Today's navigation system has been improved to the level that the latest system has 10 micro-processors, 7 MBytes of memories, and 4 GBytes of external data storage for map database. From the viewpoint of the automobile driver, there are still some problems with the system. Major problems in general are a lack of traffic information, better human interface, and a need for cost-reduction. The introduction of application specific ICs (ASICs) is expected to make systems smaller, costless, and give higher speed response. Today's in-vehicle information systems are reviewed function by function to discover what functions need to be implemented into ASICs for future systems, what ASICs will be required, and what technology has to be developed. It is concluded that more integration technology is expected including high parformance CPUs, large capacity memories, interface circuits, and some analog circuits such as DA converter. To develop this technology, some, major problems such as power consumption, number of input/output signals, as well as design aid and process technology are pointed out.

    This paper discusses the fully three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to analyze a monopole antenna mounted on a rectangular conducting box covered with a layer of dielectric. The effects of the conductivity and the permittivity of the dielectric layer are investigated. It is shown that all calculation results agree very well with the measured data.

    Numerical analysis of the electromagnetic radiation from conducting surface structures is concerned. The method of moments is discussed with the surface-patch modeling in which the surface quantities, i.e. the current, charge and impedance are directly introduced and with the wire-grid modeling in which the surface quantities are approximated by the filamentary traces. The crucial element to a numerical advantage of the wire-grid modeling lies in the simplicity of its mathematical involvements that should be traded for the uncertainties in the construction of the model. The surface-patch techniques are generally not only clear and straightforward but also more reliable than the wire-grid modeling for the computation of the surface quantities. In this work, we bring about a comparative discussion of the two approaches while the analysis of a built-in planar antenna is reported. For the purpose of the comparison, the same electric field integral equation and the Galerkin's procedure with the linear expansion/testing functions are used for both the wire-grid and surface-patch modeling.

    The intensity-dependent transmission characteristics of an Ag+Na+ ion-exchanged glass waveguide with a nematic liquid crystal MBBA cover have been investigated experimentally using an Ar+ laser. It is found that the transmission characteristics of the TE1 mode are strongly influenced by temperature. Optical bistability has been observed at a particular temperature. Such the strong temperature dependence is believed to be brought by an increase in ordinary refractive index of the MBBA cover due to temperature rise.

    A quick evaluation method is proposed to obtain stability robustness measures in polynomial coefficient space based on knowledge of coefficients of a Hurwitz stable nominal polynomial. Two norms are employed: l- and l2-norm, which correspond to the stability hypercube and hyperball in the space, respectively. Just inverting Hurwitz matrix for the nominal polynomial immediately yields closed-form estimates for the size of the hypercube and hyperball.

  • A Study on the Design and Reliability Analysis of Concurrent System by Petri Nets: A Case on Lift System

    In this paper, we show that Petri nets can be applied practically to design and analysis of concurrent, parallel and embedded mode systems such as a lift system that is familiar to our daily life. Modeling behavioral characteristics of the lift, we extend a standard Petri net by constant timed transition, faultable transition, stochastic transition and condition transition concepts. Likewise, we prsesnt some results of design and analysis of the system. This method can be applied to design and analysis of another concurrent systems.

  • A Construction of a New Image Database System which Realizes Fully Automated Image Keyword Extraction

    Recently, a flexible image database retrieval system where image keywords can be captured automatically is strongly required, in order to manage a practical number of image data successfully. However, image recognition/understanding technology level is not generally sufficient enough to achieve this requirement. In order to overcome this problem, a new type of image database framework is proposed in this paper. In the proposed system, image keywords are extracted in fully-automated fashion by the flexible and generalized image recognition system. Image keywords employed in this system are a collection of recognized objects in the image, where achieved recognition levels are allowed to be intermediate or imperfect. The concept of recognition thesaurus" has been introduced to manage these various abstraction level of kerwords successfully. As an embodiment of this concept, an experimental image database with various types of sports scenes has been implemented and various retrieval evaluations have been performed. Experimental results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Knowledge-based Database Assistant is an expert system designed to help novice users formulate correct and complete database queries. This paper describes a knowledge-based database assistant with advanced facilities such as (1) a menu-based querymaking guidance, (2) a menu-based natural-language user-interface, and (3) database-commands generator which formulates formal database queries with SQL language. The system works as an intelligent front-end to an SQL database system or a computer-aided SQL tutorial-system. In this paper, we also discuss a semantic-network model, named S-Net, which is used to represent the knowledge for formal database-query formulating processes. The menu-based English user-interface allows end-users to make a query by filling a certain query pattern with appropriate words. The query-pattern filling process is guided by pop-up menus provided by the system. The query-pattern instances thus obtained are then translated into formal database queries. The translation is carried out by evaluating operations on S-Net knowledge-base which conveys knowledge about application domain, and the underlying database schema.

  • Some Ideas of Modulation Systems for Quantum Communications

    A coherent communication system using squeezed light is one of candidates for a realization of super-reliable systems. In order to design such a system, it is essential to understand and to analyze modulators mathematically. However, quantum noise of squeezed light has a colored spectrum which changes with respect to phase of a local laser. Therefore the optimization of the relationship between signal and quantum noise spectrums is required at a modulator to obtain the ultimate performance of the communication system. In this paper, some ideas of modulators for squeezed light are proposed and their spectrum transformations are given. After the brief summary of squeezed quantum noise, a new concept which originates from the restriction of the local laser phase is applied to it. This concept makes a problem originated from a colored quantum noise spectrum more serious. It results in the optimization problem for the relationship between the quantum noise spectrum and signal power spectrum. The solution of this problem is also given under the restriction of local laser phase. As a result, a general design theory for coherent communication system using the squeezed light is given.

  • Analysis and Design of a Two-Loop Controlled Switching Power Amplifier

    This paper analyses the amplification characteristics of a two-loop controlled switching power amplifier for a digital portable telephone and presents the amplifier which has a flat gain and small phase delay from dc to 100kHz. This amplifier is a modification of a switching regulator and it uses two-loop control to achieve a wideband amplification characteristic. Optimum amplification characteristics, however, can't be designed by using the conventional method for designing a switching regulator because a flat gain and small phase delay in an amplification characteristic has not been considered for most switching regulators. This paper analyses in detail the small-signal transfer functions of the switching power amplifier and shows the behaviour of zero and poles. It also shows the boundary condition of large-signal operation. A new design procedure of a switching power amplifier is presented, and the analytical results are verified by experiments.

  • Theoretical and Experimental Research of Nonlinear Physical Systems Use in the Base of Displacements Measurement

    The physical system is considered more suitable for measurement purposes the greater is its linearity. However, in nature and engineering there are no purely linear physical transducing systems for convertion a primary onformation. The use of the linear features of the system in the measurement process finally causes the drawbacks: systematic error due to nonlinear distortions, low ratio informative signal/ noise, the necessity to evaluate a great number of the a priori parameters of the transducer in order to receive an absolute result, low thermostability because every a priori parameter itself has a temperature dependence. To exclude these drawbacks a method has been developed using nonlinear physical systems in the base of the displacements measurement. In this work is presented the realization of the method using electretic and electrostatic transducer as a converting physical system. A contactless transducer is placed parallelly to the surface of the object which displacements are measured. The transducer is driven to harmonic oscillations. Typical time intervals between even and odd extremums of the transducer output signal are measured. The object displacements are determined according to the changes of the typical time intervals. The method itself has no errors because approximations were not made while deriving the relations. The source of the errors is inaccurate registration of the start and the end of the typical time intervals. In the work are analysed the errors related to the concrete realization devices: analogue differentiator, peak detector and analog digital transducer. It is shown that the measurement is possible only if the physical system is nonlinear. The method is generalized to that case if the function of transformation of ths system has the form f(x) and monotonous character. The results of experimental investigations confirm the theoretical conclusions.

  • Synthesis of Testable Sequential Circuits with Reduced Checking Sequences

    The test pattern generation for sequential circuits is more difficult than that for combinational circuits due to the presence of memory elements. Therefore we proposed a method for synthesizing sequential circuits with testability in the level of state transition table. The state transition table is augmented by adding extra two inputs so that it possesses a distinguishing sequence, a synchronizing sequence, and transfer sequences of short length. In this case the checking sequence which do a complete verification of the circuit can be test pattern. The checking sequence have been impractical due to the longer checking sequence required. However, in this paper, we have discussed the condition to reduce the length of checking sequence, then by using suitable state assignment codes sequential circuits with much shorter checking sequences can be realized. A heuristic algorithm of the state assignment which reduce the length of checking sequence is proposed and the algorithm and reduced checking sequence are presented with simple example. The state assignment is very simple with the state matrix which represents the state transition. Furthermore some experimental results of automated synthesis for the MCNC Logic Synthesis Workshop finite state machine benchmark set have shown that the state assignment procedure is efficient for reducing checking sequences.

  • Design of Highly Parallel Linear Digital System for ULSI Processors

    To realize next-generation high performance ULSI processors, it is a very important issue to reduce the critical delay path which is determined by a cascade chain of basic gates. To design highly parallel digital operation circuits such as an adder and a multiplier, it is difficult to find the optimal code assignment in the non-linear digital system. On the other hand, the use of the linear concept in the digital system seems to be very attractive because analytical methods can be utilized. To meet the requirement, we propose a new design method of highly parallel linear digital circuits for unary operations using the concept of a cycle and a tree. In the linear digital circuit design, the analytical method can be developed using a representation matrix, so that the search procedure for optimal locally computable circuits becomes very simple. The evaluations demonstrate the usefulness of the circuit design algorithm.

    Design of high-speed digital circuits such as adders and multipliers is one of the most important issues to implement high performance VLSI systems. This paper proposes a new multiple-valued code assignment algorithm to implement locally computable combinational circuits for k-ary operations. By the decomposition of a given k-ary operation into unary operations, a code assignment algorithm for k-ary operations is developed. Partition theory usually used in the design of sequential circuits is effectively employed for optimal code assignment. Some examples are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

    In using a natural language database interface (NLI) to access the contents of a databese, the user queries may contain terms that do not appear at all in both the NLI lexicon and the database. A friendly NLI should not reject user queries with unknown terms, but should be able to handle them, and should be able to learn new lexical items. Such capability increases the usefulness of the NLI, and allows the NLI to more cover the domain of the underlying database. Therefore, a technique to handle unknown terms is decisive in designing a friendly NLI. In this work, we discuss a method that would allow a NLI to identify the meanings of unknown database field values, and terms that are exceeding the conceptual coverage of the database, in the user queries, by engaging the user in clarification dialogues based on a database-domain hierarchy. It will be shown that the method enables the NLI lexicon to learn new lexical items at run time while the clarification dialogues, and it may provide the necessary information for generating informative answers to some particular failing user queries. Moreover, the method is an efficient means to handle queries with insufficience contextual cues. The examples throughout this work are drawn from FIFA 90, an experimental NLI to a soccer database.

  • Numerical Analysis of Optical Bistability in a Variety of Nonlinear Fabry-Perot Resonators

    This paper presents a simple numerical method for calculating the stationary transmission and reflection characteristics of a variety of nonlinear Fably-Perot resonators. In nonlinear media, Maxwell's equations are directly solved by using a numerical integration of complex variables. The input-output characteristics of the Kerr-like nonlinear film without reflection mirrors and with multilayer mirrors have been calculated to demonstrate the usefulness and versatility of the proposed method and to find out resonator configurations exhibiting optical bistability at low incident-power levels. The effects of saturation in the nonlinear permittivity on the input-output characteristics have also been investigated. It has been found that a single nonlinear film with oblique incidence exhibits optical bistability without using reflection mirrors even if the refractive index of the film is low. This offers a simple method for measuring third-order nonlinearities of optical materials.

    Design of locally computable combinational circuits is a very important subject to implement high-speed compact arithmetic and logic circuits in VLSI systems. This paper describes a multiple-valued code assignment algorithm for the locally computable combinational circuits, when a functional specification for a unary operation is given by the mapping relationship between input and output symbols. Partition theory usually used in the design of sequential circuits is effectively employed for the fast search for the code assignment problem. Based on the partition theory, mathematical foundation is derived for the locally computable circuit design. Moreover, for permutation operations, we propose an efficient code assignment algorithm based on closed chain sets to reduce the number of combinations in search procedure. Some examples are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of the algorithm.

  • Precise Linewidth Measurement Using a Scanning Electron Probe

    Practical linewidth measurement accuracy better than 0.02 µm 3 sigma that meets the production requirement for devices with sub-half micron features, was achieved in a field emission scanning electron-beam metrology system (Hitachi S-7000). In order to establish high accuracy linewidth measurement, it was found in the study that reduction of electron-beam diameter and precise control of operating conditions are significantly effective. For the purpose of reducing electron-beam diameter, a novel electron optical system was adopted to minimize the chromatic aberration which defines electron-beam profile. As a result the electron beam diameter was reduced from 20 nm to 16 nm. In order to reduce measurement uncertainties associated with actual operating conditions, a field emission electron gun geometry and an objective lens current monitor were investigated. Then the measurement uncertainties due to operating conditions was reduced from 0.016 µm to 0.004 µm.
