We show that a problem of deciding whether a formula for a multivariate polynomial of n variables over a finite field of characteristic 2 has degree n when reduced modulo a certain Boolean ideal belongs to P. When the formula is allowed to have succinct representations as sums of monomials, the problem becomes P-complete.

This paper presents a computer-aided design procedure of simulated annealing algorithm to optimize dual-wideband microstrip line filters with symmetrical at least 500 MHz bandwidths respectively. This method demonstrates the superiority of designing microstrip line dual-band filters. The value of characteristic impedances and electrical lengths of transmission lines synthesizing 2.4 GHz and 5.2 GHz dualband filters with a single input and a single output are adjusted to the annealing process by the optimization algorithm. The fabricated dual-wideband spectral transmittance and reflectance curves of these filters applying this method all effectively achieved desired high performances and resulted in a lower cost dual-band filters and open the way to commercial mass production. The method is applicable not only in 2.4 GHz and 5.2 GHz, but can be applied to any other multi-frequency bands.

This paper studies a cellular system with mobile customers. The network system consists of cells, the tagged cell and the adjacent cells which surround the tagged one. Each cell has a finite number of channels that give calls to the mobile customers. The service (holding) time distribution of the calls is general. Customers in the adjacent cells inflow into the tagged cell according to a Poisson process. The sojourn time distribution of each customer in the tagged cell is general. Each customer without call in progress generates his call according to a Poisson process. It is proved that the steady state distribution in the tagged cell is the generalized Erlang loss formula which is the joint distribution of the number of customers with calls and the number of customers without calls. The distribution depends on the service time distribution and the sojourn time distribution only through their means.

In this paper, we consider a mobile system consisting of a single isolated circular cell with K independent users simultaneously sharing the channel using binary DS-CDMA to establish a full duplex channel with the base station. Both coherent and differential detection RAKE receivers with Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) techniques are considered. The performance of two uplink/downlink receivers in Nakagami wideband fading channel is studied. Our approach relies on the use of total instantaneous interference power calculations instead of the use of average power approximations. We analyzed and derived new exact formulae for bit error probabilities for the considered system, and presented a set of numerical results both for the exact formulae and Gaussian approximation. The performance comparisons suggest that the exact formulae provide superior performance to Gaussian approximation especially at low number of users and either high fading parameters of the desired user or low fading parameters of the MAIs.

Test compression / decompression is an efficient method for reducing the test application cost. In this letter we propose a response compression method based on Huffman coding. The proposed method guarantees zero-aliasing and it is independent of the fault model and the structure of a circuit-under-test. Experimental results of the compression ratio and the size of the encoder for the proposed method are presented.

This paper proposes a scattered-pilot-OFDM reception scheme employing turbo inter-carrier interference (ICI) cancellation in the fast varying fading environments of mobile communications. In the OFDM transmission, the orthogonality among the subcarriers cannot hold due to large Doppler shift, and the OFDM signal suffers from severe degradation due to ICI. The proposed receiver carries out two modes: (i) a coherent detection (CD) mode, and (ii) a turbo ICI cancellation (TC) mode. Initially, the receiver performs the CD mode. When any decision errors are detected, it shifts from the CD mode to the TC one that carries out both the ICI cancellation and the channel estimation by using the decoder output (the log likelihood ratio). In addition, the iteration of the TC mode can improve the accuracy of the channel estimation and ICI cancellation ability. Computer simulations following specifications for the mobile reception mode in the digital terrestrial television broadcasting demonstrate that the receiver can effectively cancel ICI due to the fast varying fading, and that its average BER performance is much better than that of CD.

A multi-band OFDM-MIMO system, in which the multi-band OFDM method is combined with the MIMO concept, has been developed. In this system, the spectra of multi-band OFDM signals are adaptively shared to improve the path gain for MIMO multiple transmission. The OFDM signal is divided into multi-bands, and the divided signals are transmitted on an appropriate beam in each multi-band. Multi-band transmission improves the overall transmission capacity by reducing the degradation of frequency-selective channels. In this paper, we report on our evaluation of the multi-band OFDM-MIMO system with frequency-selective fading channels.

This paper proposes likelihood function generation of complexity-reduced Maximum Likelihood Detection with QR Decomposition and M-algorithm (QRM-MLD) suitable for soft-decision Turbo decoding and investigates the throughput performance using QRM-MLD with the proposed likelihood function in multipath Rayleigh fading channels for Orthogonal Frequency and Code Division Multiplexing (OFCDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing. Simulation results show that by using the proposed likelihood function generation scheme for soft-decision Turbo decoding following QRM-MLD in 4-by-4 MIMO multiplexing, the required average received signal energy per bit-to-noise power spectrum density ratio (Eb/N0) at the average block error rate (BLER) of 10-2 at a 1-Gbps data rate is significantly reduced compared to that using hard-decision decoding in OFCDM access with 16 QAM modulation, the coding rate of 8/9, and 8-code multiplexing with a spreading factor of 8 assuming a 100-MHz bandwidth. Furthermore, we show that by employing QRM-MLD associated with soft-decision Turbo decoding for 4-by-4 MIMO multiplexing, the throughput values of 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps are achieved at the average received Eb/N0 of approximately 4.5 and 9.3 dB by QPSK with the coding rate of R = 8/9 and 16QAM with R = 8/9, respectively, for OFCDM access assuming a 100-MHz bandwidth in a twelve-path Rayleigh fading channel.

Future personal communication service (PCS) networks consider smaller cells to accommodate continuously growing population of subscribers. That results in frequent location update and consequently higher signaling cost. Among various schemes proposed for improving the efficiency of location management, the distance-based and the direction-based location update methods work well for just certain mobility patterns. In this paper, we propose a hybrid location update (HLU) scheme, which takes into account both the moving distance and the moving direction when deciding on updating the location. We analyze the performance of the HLU under different mobility patterns and call-to-mobility ratios based on a 2D Markov walk model. The numerical results demonstrate that the HLU scheme can achieve better performance than the distance-based or the direction-based methods applied individually.

We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel WDM-PON downstream optical link. It is composed of a wavelength-locked FP-LD with a spectrally-sliced FP-LD as an external-injection optical source and operated as directly-modulating in a downstream-traffic transmitter. The downstream transmissions at 622 Mbps and 2.5 Gbps were performed for four channels over 25 km. The proposed WDM-PON downstream transmitter can be expanded up to eight channels by controlling an external-injection optical source of a spectrally-sliced FP-LD. Also, the transmitter has facility of multi-channel selection by controlling temperature. We verified the potential of the transmitter in WDM-PON optical link.

A compact wideband patch antenna with bent Y-probe is proposed and studied. With the bent Y-probe and substrate thickness of about 0.14λ0, a bandwidth (VSWR below 2) of 54.6% has been achieved. The size of the antenna is decreased due to the shorting wall and Y-probe. The radiation patterns and the gains across the band are also studied.

In the microwave band, Optical Electric Field Sensors (OEFS) provide an attractive method to measure electromagnetic fields precisely. It is difficult however, to develop an OEFS that operates with both wide bandwidth and high sensitivity. In this paper, we propose a Log-Periodic Dipole antenna Array (LPDA)-type OEFS that achieves high sensitivity over a wide bandwidth. The LPDA-type OEFS has a large number of electrodes that are attached to each of the antenna elements. Not only the lengths of the antenna elements but also the lengths of electrodes vary log-periodically. The OEFS responds to microwaves by synchronizing the propagation direction of light with the propagation direction of the microwave. An OEFS constructed of y-cut z-propagation Lithium Niobate (LN) demonstrates good stability against temperature variation. Theoretical analysis with respect to the refractive index variation and optical modulator with the crystal orientation will be provided in this paper. In addition, the characteristics of the proposed LPDA-type OEFS will be shown over wide bandwidth in the microwave band.

This paper describes the choke-loaded patch array antenna for use in the IMT-2000 repeater systems. The choke structure of the 4-element array is designed by means of an electromagnetic analysis. A high front-to-back (FB) ratio is required for suppressing mutual coupling in order to stop the oscillation caused by the interference waves between a transmitting and receiving antenna. The suppression of the FB ratio by a choke is limited in the case of the 16-element array because its side lobe level is large. In this paper, we examine the effect of suppressing the mutual coupling using a binomial array.

A miniaturized rectangular resonator made of a novel anisotropic artificial dielectric material is investigated which has advantages of small size and big separation of the higher-modes. To obtain a property of anisotropic permittivity, artificial dielectric material is fabricated by lamination of rectangular metal strips etched on a printed circuit board. Artificial dielectric rectangular resonators are designed to excite TE10δ mode selectively, aligning the rectangular metal patterns along the direction of the mode electric field line. The resonant frequencies and coupling coefficient of artificial dielectric rectangular resonators encapsulated in a metal waveguide are analyzed theoretically, and compared with the experimental result. As a microwave application, a high selectivity TE10δ mode bandpass filter (BPF) using two artificial dielectric rectangular resonators is demonstrated. A two-stage BPF with the center frequency of 1.718 GHz, bandwidth of 78 MHz, and insertion loss of 1.3 dB is successfully realized in a rectangular waveguide.

A Shared-State Hidden Markov Model (SS-HMM) has been widely used as an acoustic model in speech recognition. In this paper, we propose a method for constructing SS-HMMs within a practical Bayesian framework. Our method derives the Bayesian model selection criterion for the SS-HMM based on the variational Bayesian approach. The appropriate phonetic decision tree structure of the SS-HMM is found by using the Bayesian criterion. Unlike the conventional asymptotic criteria, this criterion is applicable even in the case of an insufficient amount of training data. The experimental results on isolated word recognition demonstrate that the proposed method does not require the tuning parameter that must be tuned according to the amount of training data, and is useful for selecting the appropriate SS-HMM structure for practical use.

This paper reports the strength of a pseudorandom number generator MUGI, which was published as a stream cipher by Hitachi, Ltd. in 2001, against linear cryptanalysis. MUGI is one of the recommended ciphers of CRYPTREC, which is a project for the e-Government in Japan. It has two internal states called state and buffer, which are updated by a linear function λ and a non-linear function ρ. The non-linear function ρ and the linear function λ have already been analyzed, independently. In this paper, whole MUGI is analyzed by truncated linear cryptanalysis. The analysis of λ function is based on the state variables method. The result is combined to the result of the analysis of ρ function to make a trellis diagram. Viterbi search is conducted on the diagram to find the best possible linear path under 64-bit truncated linear cryptanalysis. As the result, the upper bound of the maximum linear characteristic probability is estimated as less than 2-138. Therefore, MUGI is secure against linear cryptanalysis.

A detailed investigation of the electromagnetic field distributions in high frequency printed circuits and high-speed interconnects is very useful for physical understanding, studies of electromagnetic coupling effects for EMC and EMI and for optimization of electromagnetic circuit designs. The aim of this paper is to show how to measure the electric field distributions in electromagnetic circuits. An electromagnetic analysis for microstrip-line circuits is carried out by using a finite-difference time domain technique and its measurement is carried out by using a small probe antenna. The measurement results are in fairly good agreement with those of the numerical analysis using the FDTD method. Thus, the measurement system offers a valid means for predictions in the theoretical analysis of more complicated discontinuity problems.

Extensive studies have been made of the public key cryptosystems based on multivariate polynomials over F2. However most of the proposed public key cryptosystems based on multivariate polynomials, are proved not secure. In this paper, we propose several types of new constructions of public key cryptosystems based on randomly generated singular simultaneous equations. One of the features of the proposed cryptosystems is that the sets of random singular simultaneous equations significantly enlarges the size of the transformation.
