  • Efficient Substructure Discovery from Large Semi-Structured Data

    In this paper, we consider a data mining problem for semi-structured data. Modeling semi-structured data as labeled ordered trees, we present an efficient algorithm for discovering frequent substructures from a large collection of semi-structured data. By extending the enumeration technique developed by Bayardo (SIGMOD'98) for discovering long itemsets, our algorithm scales almost linearly in the total size of maximal tree patterns contained in an input collection depending mildly on the size of the longest pattern. We also developed several pruning techniques that significantly speed-up the search. Experiments on Web data show that our algorithm runs efficiently on real-life datasets combined with proposed pruning techniques in the wide range of parameters.

    Performance measurements are indispensable for managing the Internet. Among the performance measurement techniques known, passive measurement is attractive because of its accuracy; user traffic is observed without inserting additional test traffic. However, the technique is handicapped by its large storage and bandwidth costs. This paper proposes a passive packet loss measurement technique that effectively avoids the difficulty of the conventional passive measurement approaches. Its key advance is utilizing the packet feature computed by a hash function. Since the feature can identify a packet with a short length of data, it becomes possible to greatly decrease the storage and bandwidth costs of passive measurements. The paper details the measurement procedure and assesses the design parameters used in the method. In addition, the validity of the proposed method is confirmed through experiments. The experiments also show the advantage of the method over the conventional active measurement.

  • Characterization and Implementation of Partial Projection Filter in the Presence of Signal Space Noise

    The partial projection filter gives optimal signal restoration in the presence of both the signal space and the observation space noises. In this paper, the filter has been characterized from the point of view of its signal restoration and noise suppression capabilities. The filter is shown to suppress the noise component in the restored signal while retaining the signal component, thus maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio. Further, a digital implementation of the filter is presented in matrix form in contrast to its original operator based derivation, for practical applications.

    Replication to mask the effects of failures is a basic technique for improving reliability of a file system. Consistency control protocols are implemented to ensure the consistency among these replicas. The native token-based mechanism which merely sequences the distributed requests suffered from the poor system utilization due to the lack of dependence checking between writes and management of out-of-ordered requests. Hence, in this paper, by utilizing the idempotent property of NFS and executing ahead most of independent WRITE requests, the new consistency control scheme is proposed to improve the performance of operations and failure recovery. Finally, a numeric case shows the efficiency of the new scheme.

    This paper proposes a thread partitioning algorithm in low power high-level synthesis. The algorithm is applied to high-level synthesis systems. In the systems, we can describe parallel behaving circuit blocks (threads) explicitly. First it focuses on a local register file RF in a thread. It partitions a thread into two sub-threads, one of which has RF and the other does not have RF. The partitioned sub-threads need to be synchronized with each other to keep the data dependency of the original thread. Since the partitioned sub-threads have waiting time for synchronization, gated clocks can be applied to each sub-thread. Then we can synthesize a low power circuit with a low area overhead, compared to the original circuit. Experimental results demonstrate effectiveness and efficiency of the algorithm.

  • 1 MHz High-Speed Digitally Controlled DC-DC Converter

    A digitally controlled dc-dc power converter is useful to dc power supply systems for telecommunications and data communications systems that require high reliability and high performance. This paper presents a design criterion and output characteristics of 1 MHz high-speed digitally controlled dc-dc converter using a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) as an analog to digital signal converter in the digital control circuit. As a result, it is revealed theoretically and experimentally that the proposed 1 MHz high-speed digitally controlled dc-dc converter has excellent static and dynamic characteristics. The adjustability of output voltage is less than 10 mV and there is no steady-state error within the integral controlled regulation range. Also, the overshoot is suppressed enough within 0.1 V and the transient time is very short.

    Public telephone network have been dramatically changing to IP (Internet Protocol) based network. This paper starts with an overview of the present status of the telecommunications network and the rapid evolution of iDCs (internet Data Centers) now underway. Next, we focus on the existing configurations and the characteristics of power systems for IP equipment and iDCs, and then clarify the cutting-edge technologies for highly reliable powering systems and the advantages of DC power systems. Finally, the paper demonstrates energy-saving activities, and the prospected issues to be solved in the field of power systems for the coming full-fledged IT Age.

  • Planning of Air-Conditioning and Circulation Systems for Data Center

    This development proposes a highly efficient air-conditioning airflow system for a computer-machine room having high-heat-generating equipment using forced-air cooling. The proposed system recirculates room air in the area surrounding equipment back to the cooling supply air supplied from a double floor. The recirculated air is therefore used as cooling air for computers. This system enables the blowing temperature difference of air-conditioner units to be increased, blower capacity to be decreased, and overall efficiency of air-conditioner units to be increased. Here, we have proposed an air-conditioning airflow system that decreases the amount of cooling supply air while ensuring adequate air ventilation for equipment using forced-air cooling, and a design method for achieving this system.

    We have demonstrated radio-over-fiber transmission of wireless signals at millimeter-wave bands. The system incorporated 25 km of an optical intermediate frequency feeder and 60 GHz OFDM signal transmission at 155 Mbps with a BER of less than 10-6 was achieved within the system cell of a radius of 2.6 m under the channel condition of Line-of-Sight.

    Checking the equivalence of two Boolean functions under permutation of the variables is an important problem in the synthesis of multiplexer-based field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and the problem is known as Boolean matching. This paper presents an efficient breadth-first search technique for computing a canonical form--namely P-representative--of Boolean functions under permutation of the variables. Two functions match if they have the same P-representative. On an ordinary workstation, on the average, the method requires several microseconds to check the Boolean matching of functions with up to eight variables against a library with tens of thousands of cells.

    We describe a new inconsistent case which is susceptible to occur while producing consistent answer set using prioritized default logic. We define new semantics for prioritized default logic in order to solve this problem. There is a sign difference between General and Extended logic programs. Extended logic programs are formulated using classical negation, For this reason, an inconsistent answer set can sometimes be produced. For the most part, default reasoning semantics successfully resolved this problem, but a conflict could still arise in one particular case. The purpose of this paper is to present this eventuality, and revise the semantics of default logic in order to give an answer to this problem.

  • A New Feature Extraction for Iris Identification Using Scale-Space Filtering Technique

    In this paper, we introduce a new technology to extract the unique features from an iris image, which uses scale-space filtering. Resulting iris code can be used to develop a system for rapid and automatic human identification with high reliability and confidence levels. First, an iris part is separated from the whole image and the radius and center of the iris are evaluated. Next, the regions that have a high possibility of being noise are discriminated and the features presented in the highly detailed pattern are then extracted. In order to conserve the original signal while minimizing the effect of noise, scale-space filtering is applied. Experiments are performed using a set of 272 iris images taken from 18 persons. Test results show that the iris feature patterns of different persons are clearly discriminated from those of the same person.

    A switched nonlinear system is considered, and the interval between two consecutive switchings is assumed to be greater than a value called "the dwell time." When switching among nonlinear systems, using a constant dwell time generally fails to lead to stability. In this letter, a state dependent dwell time function with convergence guarantees is presented for discrete-time stable nonlinear systems.

    Signal integrity problem arises as one of the main issues in digital circuits manufactured by today's deep submicron technology. The coupling capacitance of neighboring lines may cause delays of circuit and it may affect the functionality of circuit. These effects are usually referred to as crosstalk. Since it requires additional design cost to fix crosstalk noise, the false aggressor nodes that cannot affect on victim node have to be eliminated. In this paper, we propose efficient heuristic algorithm that considers functional correlation for false aggressor pruning in crosstalk noise analysis. The false aggressors are detected by a path sensitization algorithm and logic implication. The efficiency of our algorithm has been verified on Benchmark circuits with a 0.18 µm standard cell library. Experimental results show an average of 5.4% false aggressor detection and an average improvement of 14.6% in the accuracy of timing analysis.

    Liquid-crystal devices with in-plane switching electrodes (IPS-LCD) are superior to twisted nematic ones in their wider range of viewing angle, but show serious color shift with viewing angle. The color shift is a phenomenon governed by the three-dimensional orientation of liquid-crystal molecules. In order to evaluate such effects numerically, light wave propagation in the IPS-LCD is studied using a two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method, where all six components of electromagnetic field are analysed and the three-dimensional properties of liquid-crystal materials are taken into account through the dielectric tensor. The computational space termination is provided by a combination of the uniaxial perfectly matched layer and periodic boundary conditions. It is found for the first time numerically that the color shift effects strongly depend on the asymmetrical profile of liquid-crystal orientation, which is originated from the small pretilt angle.

    JERS-1 L-band SAR data can be, especially over urban areas affected by ground radar interferences. For most of the applications of the data the interferences should be suppressed. Notch filtering during image correlation process is one of the straightforward ways to do this. However, lower the threshold is, more signals from earth surface is eliminated. In this paper, a probability density function (PDF's) model of the ground radar interference signal is worked out from experimental data, and used for the suppression of interferences and the preservation of backscattered signals. The validity of the model is confirmed against real SAR data, and a general filter threshold--applicable to all JERS-1 SAR data--without any conditions is proposed.

    A new construction of sequences having both a low peak factor (crest factor) and flat power spectrum is proposed. The flat power spectrum provides zero auto-correlation except for the case of zero shift. The proposed construction is based on a systematic scheme that does not require a search, and affords sequences of length 4n(2n+1) for an arbitrary integer n.

  • A Hybrid Dictionary Test Data Compression for Multiscan-Based Designs

    In this paper, we present a test data compression technique to reduce test data volume for multiscan-based designs. In our method the internal scan chains are divided into equal sized groups and two dictionaries were build to encode either an entire slice or a subset of the slice. Depending on the codeword, the decompressor may load all scan chains or may load only a group of the scan chains, which can enhance the effectiveness of dictionary-based compression. In contrast to previous dictionary coding techniques, even for the CUT with a large number of scan chains, the proposed approach can achieve satisfied reduction in test data volume with a reasonable smaller dictionary. Experimental results showed the proposed test scheme works particularly well for the large ISCAS'89 benchmarks.

    In this paper, iterative adaptive soft parallel interference canceller (ASPIC) is proposed for turbo coded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiplexing. ASPIC is applied to transform a MIMO channel into single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channels for maximum ratio diversity combining (MRC). In the ASPIC, replicas of the interference are generated and subtracted from the received signals. For the generation of replicas with higher reliability, iterative ASPIC is proposed. It performs the iterative interference cancellation by feedback of the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) sequence obtained as the turbo decoder output. For iterative ASPIC, at the transmitter, the information sequence and parity sequence are transmitted from different antennas. In this paper, the achievable bit error rate (BER) performance, in a Rayleigh fading channel, for the turbo coded MIMO multiplexing with the proposed iterative ASPIC system is evaluated by computer simulation.
