  • Performance Evaluation of UDP Traffic Affected by TCP Flows

    On wide area networks (WANs), UDP has likely been used for real-time applications, such as video and audio. UDP supplies minimized transmission delay by omitting the connection setup process, flow control, and retransmission. Meanwhile, more than 80 percent of the WAN resources are occupied by Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) traffic. As opposed to UDP's simplicity, TCP adopts a unique flow control mechanism with sliding windows. Hence, the quality of service (QoS) of real-time applications using UDP is affected by TCP traffic and its flow control mechanism whenever TCP and UDP share a bottleneck node. In this paper, the characteristics of UDP packet loss are investigated through simulations of WANs conveying UDP and TCP traffic simultaneously. In particular, the effects of TCP flow control on the packet loss of real-time audio are examined to discover how real-time audio should be transmitted with the minimum packet loss, while it is competing with TCP traffic for the bandwidth. The result obtained was that UDP packet loss occurs more often and successively when the congestion windows of TCP connections are synchronized. Especially in this case, the best performance of real-time audio applications can be obtained when they send-small sized packets without reducing their transmission rates.

    Evaluating analytically computer architecture performance is mostly cheap and quick. However, existing analytical performance evaluation techniques usually have a difficult and time-consuming modeling process. Moreover, existing techniques do not support well the capability for finding the bottleneck and its cause of a target system being evaluated. To address the above problems and to enhance analytical performance evaluation technology, in this paper we propose a software tool that accepts system models described in a specification language, generating an executable program that performs the actual performance evaluation. The whole approach is built on a subsystem-oriented performance evaluation tool, which is, in turn, based on a formal subsystem-oriented performance evaluation technique and a subsystem specification language.

    Recent progress in neural network research has demonstrated the usefulness of neural networks in a variety of areas. In this work, its application in the spatial resolution improvement of a remotely sensed low resolution thermal infrared image using high spatial resolution of visible and near-infrared images from Landsat TM sensor is described. The same work is done by an algebraic method. The tests developed are explained and examples of the results obtained in each test are shown and compared with each other. The error analysis is also carried out. Future improvements of these methods are evaluated.

    This paper proposes a new approach to recover the sign of local surface curvature of object from three shading images using neural network. The RBF (Radial Basis Function) neural network is used to learn the mapping of three image irradiances to the position on a sphere. Then, the learned neural network maps the image irradiances at the neighbor pixels of the test object taken from three illuminating directions of light sources onto the sphere images taken under the same illuminating condition. Using the property that basic six kinds of surface curvature has the different relative locations of the local five points mapped on the sphere, not only the Gaussian curvature but also the kind of curvature is directly recovered locally from the relation of the locations on the mapped points on the sphere without knowing the values of surface gradient for each point. Further, two step neural networks which combines the forward mapping and its inverse mapping one can be used to get the local confidence estimate for the obtained results. The entire approach is non-parametric, empirical in that no explicit assumptions are made about light source directions or surface reflectance. Results are demonstrated by the experiments for real images.

  • A Note on Constrained Least Squares Design of M-D FIR Filter Based on Convex Projection Techniques

    Recently, a great deal of effort has been devoted to the design problem of "constrained least squares M-D FIR filter" because a significant improvement of the squared error is expected by a slight relaxation of the minimax error condition. Unfortunately, no design method has been reported, which has some theoretical guarantee of the convergence to the optimal solution. In this paper, we propose a class of novel design methods of "constrained least squares M-D FIR filter. " The most remarkable feature is that all of the proposed methods have theoretical guarantees of convergences to the unique optimal solution under any consistent set of prescribed maximal error conditions. The proposed methods are based on "convex projection techniques" that computes the metric projection onto the intersection of multiple closed convex sets in real Hilbert space. Moreover, some of the proposed methods can still be applied even for the problem with any inconsistent set of maximal error conditions. These lead to the unique optimal solution over the set of all filters that attain the least sum of squared distances to all constraint sets.

  • Pipelined Architecture of the LMS Adaptive Digital Filter with the Minimum Output Latency

    In this paper, we propose two new pipelined adaptive digital filter architectures. The architectures are based on an equivalent expression of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm. It is shown that one of the proposed architectures achieves the minimum output latency, or zero without affecting the convergence characteristics. We also show that, by increasing the output latency be one, the other architecture can be obtained which has a shorter critical path.

  • Design of Two Channel Stable IIR Perfect Reconstruction Filter Banks

    In this paper, a novel method is proposed for designing two channel biorthogonal filter banks with general IIR filters, which satisfy both the perfect reconstruction and causal stable conditions. Since the proposed filter banks are structurally perfect reconstruction implementation, the perfect reconstruction property is still preserved even when all filter coefficients are quantized. The proposed design method is based on the formulation of a generalized eigenvalue problem by using Remez multiple exchange algorithm. Then, the filter coefficients can be computed by solving the eigenvalue problem, and the optimal solution is easily obtained through a few iterations. One design example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Macroscopic Method of Quantization of Evanescent Electromagnetic Fields with Taken into Account of Medium Dispersion

    Macroscopic method for quantization of the evanescent fields brought about by total reflection is presented. Here, a semi-infinite space is assumed to be filled with a transparent dispersive dielectric with dielectric constant ε(ω) to the left of the plane z = 0, and be empty to the right of the plane. The wave is assumed to be incident from the left, and so the whole field is composed of the triplet of incident, reflected, and transmitted waves labeled by a continuous wave vector index. The transmitted wave in free space may be evanescent. The triplet is shown exactly without using slowly varying field approximation in dispersive medium to form orthogonal mode for different wave vectors, which provides the basis for the quantization of the triplet with taken into account of medium dispersion. The exact orthogonal relation reduces to the well known one if the dielectric is nondispersive, ε/ω = 0. By using the field expansion in terms of the orthogonal triplet modes, the total field energy is found to be the sum of the energies of independent harmonic oscillators. A discussion is also made on the wave momentum of evanescent field.

  • CMA Adaptive Array Antennas Using Analysis and Synthesis Filter Banks

    A constant modulus adaptive array algorithm is derived using analysis and synthesis filter banks to permit adaptive digital beamforming for wideband signals. The properties of the CMA adaptive array using the filter banks are investigated. This array would be used to realize adaptive digital beamforming when this is difficult by means of ordinary (that is, non-subband) processing due to the limited speed of signal processor operations. As an actual application, we present a beamspace adaptive array structure that combines the analysis and synthesis filter banks with RF-domain multibeam array antennas, such as those utilizing optical signal processing.

In this paper, we experimentally investigate networking technologies for optically time division multiplexed systems. We demonstrate significant advantages in terms of scalability, design flexibility and technology interoperability over the traditional wavelength division multiplexing approach.

    In this paper, a dedicated hardware design for motion estimation LSI of MPEG2 is presented. Combining our bits truncation adaptive pyramid (BTAP) algorithm with Window-MSPA architecture, the hardware cost is tremendously reduced without PSNR performance degradation for mean pyramid algorithm. The core of the test chip working at 83 MHz, performs a search range of 67 for image size of 1920 1152 and achieves video rate of 60 field/s. It can be used for HDTV purpose. The chip size is 4. 8 mm 4. 8 mm with 0. 5u 2-level metal CMOS technology. The result in this paper shows our promising future to realize one chip HDTV MPEG2 encoder.

    The authors have proposed a design method for two-dimensional (2-D) separable-denominator (SD) periodically time-variant digital filters (PTV DFs) and confirmed their superiority over 2-D time-invariant DFs. In that result, the periodicity matrix representing the periodicity of the varying filter coefficients is, however, restricted to two cases. This paper extends that idea so that the input-output relation of 2-D SD PTV DFs with an arbitrary periodicity matrix can be determined. This enables us to design wide range of 2-D PTV DFs.

    In this paper, we propose flow aggregation algorithms for multicast video transport. Because of heterogeneities of network/client environments and users' preference on the perceived video quality, various QoS requirements must be simultaneously guaranteed even for the single video source in the multicast connection. It is easy but ineffective to provide many video streams according to each user's request. Our flow aggregation algorithm arranges similar QoS requirements of clients into a single QoS requirement, by which the required number of video streams that the video server prepares can be decreased. Then the total amount of the required bandwidth can be reduced by sharing the same video stream among a number of clients. Our flow aggregation algorithm has two variants, which are suitable to sender-initiated and receiver-initiated multicast connections, respectively. Proposed algorithms are evaluated and compared through simulation. Then we show that the server-initiated flow aggregation (an ideal case in our approach) is most effective, but the receiver-initiated flow aggregation can also offer a reasonably effective mechanism.

    The Advanced Intelligent Network (Advanced IN) is now commercialized and the Internet is becoming popular all over the world. If these two networks were connected, the potential would exist for new services. This paper surveys and analyzes the possibility of improving both the Internet and Advanced IN with an Advanced IN-the Internet connection. Service customization, which allows customers to define their own service specifications, is one of the most important service applications for the Advanced IN. However, some issues must be resolved before that service can be offered. This paper proposes a solution in which Internet technologies are applied to the IN. We review the system architecture of Service Logic Program (SLP) definition and execution in NTT's IN for service customization. Version management and cost for delivery are the major issue for service customization with the SLP(C) creation tool. We suggest an Internet version of the SLP(C) creation tool to solve these problems. Results of the prototype shows that connecting the IN and the Internet for service customization will benefit both customers and telecommunication operators.

    This paper proposes a bitstream scaling technique for MPEG video for the purpose of media synchronizations. The proposed scaling technique can reduce the frame rate as well as the bit rate of an MPEG data sequence to fit them to the values specified by a synchronization system. The advantage of the proposed technique over existing scaling methods is that it is considering not only the performance of synchronization but also the picture quality of the resulting sequences. To further improve the quality of sequences scaled by the proposed method, this paper also proposes an MPEG encoding technique which sets some of the parameters suitable for the scaling. An experiment using these techniques in an actual media synchronization system has illustrated the usefulness of the proposed approach.

    This paper describes the design of polarization insensitive InP-based arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs), and the characteristics of fabricated devices. The use of a deep-ridge waveguide structure made the fabrication of compact polarization-insensitive AWGs possible. As a result, a low crosstalk (-30 dB) 8-channel AWG and a large-scale (64 channel) AWG with 50 GHz channel spacing could be fabricated. An integrated circuit containing an 8-channel AWG with photodetectors is also described.

    Wavelength tunable laser diodes are critical components in a wide variety of WDM and packet switching architectures. And also wavelength-tuned short pulses generated from the semiconductor laser diodes are of great importance for the developments of ultrahigh speed and WDM optical communication systems. Over the past several years, both continuously and discontinuously tunable lasers incorporating periodically sampled and chirped grating have been studied theoretically and experimentally. These laser diodes show the wide tuning range of above 60 nm, stable lasing condition, and large side-mode suppression ratio. Directly modulated semiconductor laser diodes, even those with a single mode, exhibit a dynamic frequency chirp during the on/off modulation. The dynamic linewidth broadening caused by such a large frequency chirp can result in a significant penalty in the performance of high-speed long-haul optical communication systems. The CW laser diodes integrated with an external EA modulator are an breakthrough to realize the high-speed optical systems with low chirp. And also the short pulse generation using the external modulator has been realized experimentally, whose principle of the pulse generation is the optical gating of the electroabsorption modulator. In this paper, widely tunable laser diodes incorporating periodically sampled and chirped gratings and an external modulator are analyzed using an improved time-domain dynamic model. First, it is demonstrated that the improved model is very powerful in simulating the complex laser diodes with active and passive sections. And, the dynamic properties of the sampled grating DBR and chirped grating DBR laser diodes are investigated. Second, the modulation characteristics of the laser diode integrated with the external electroabsorption modulator are studied. It is shown that the external modulation are superior to the direct modulation in the aspect of the lower frequency chirp. And the pulse generation by the optical gating of the external modulator is observed theoretically.

    High- and low-reflection Bragg gratings with a flat-top spectral response free from ripples are proposed. Add/drop filters are created based on gratings photoinduced on planar waveguides by using the new design schemes. The measured spectral responses for the high and low reflection gratings are in good agreement with the calculated ones, and show the flat-top spectral responses.
