  • Restructuring Logic Representations with Simple Disjunctive Decompositions

    Simple disjunctive decomposition is a special case of logic function decompositions, where variables are divided into two disjoint sets and there is only one newly introduced variable. It offers an optimal structure for a single-output function. This paper presents two techniques that enable us to apply simple disjunctive decompositions with little overhead. Firstly, we propose a method to find symple disjunctive decomposition forms efficiently by limiting decomposition types to be found to two: a decomposition where the bound set is a set of symmetric variables and a decomposition where the output function is a 2-input function. Secondly, we propose an algorithm that constructs a new logic representation for a simple disjunctive decomposition just by assigning constant values to variables in the original representation. The algorithm enables us to apply the decomposition with keeping good structures of the original representation. We performed experiments for decomposing functions and confirmed the efficiency of our method. We also performed experiments for restructuring fanout free cones of multi-level logic circuits, and obtained better results than when not restructuring them.

  • New Performance Evaluation of Parallel Thinning Algorithms Based on PRAM and MPRAM Models

    The objective of thinning is to reduce the amount of information in image patterns to the minimum needed for recognition. Thinned image helps the extraction of important features such as end points, junction points, and connections from image patterns. The ultimate goal of parallel algorithms is to minimize the execution time while producing high quality thinned image. Though much research has been performed for parallel thinning algorithms, there has been no systematical approach for comparing the execution speed of parallel thinning algorithms. Several rough comparisons have been done in terms of iteration numbers. But, such comparisons may lead to wrong guides since the time required for iterations varies from one algorithm to the other algorithm. This paper proposes a formal method to analyze the performance of parallel thinning algorithms based on PRAM (Parallel Random Access Machine) model. Besides, the quality of skeletons, robustness to boundary noise sensitivity, and execution speed are considered. Six parallel algorithms, which shows relatively high performance, are selected, and analyzed based on the proposed analysis method. Experiments show that the proposed analysis method is sufficiently accurate to evaluate the performance of parallel thinning algorithms.

  • Buddy Coherence: An Adaptive Granularity Handling Scheme for Page-Based DSM

    Page-based DSM systems suffer from false sharing since they use a large page as a coherence unit. The optimal page size is dynamically affected by application characteristics. Therefore, a fixed-size page cannot satisfy various applications even if it is small as a cache line size. In this paper we present a software-only coherence protocol called BCP (Buddy Coherence Protocol) to support multiple page sizes that vary adaptively according to the behavior of each application during run time. In BCP, the address of a remote access and the address of the most recent local access is compared. If they are to the different halves of a page, BCP considers it as false sharing and demotes the page to two subpages of equal size. If two contiguous pages belong to the same node, BCP promotes two pages to a superpage to reduce the number of the following coherence activities. We also suggest a mechanism to detect data sharing patterns to optimize the protocol. It detects and keeps the sharing pattern for each page by a state transition mechanism. By referring to those patterns, BCP selectively demotes the page and increases the effectiveness of a demotion. Self-invalidation of the migratorily shared page is also employed to reduce the number of invalidations. Our simulations show that the optimized BCP outperforms almost all the best cases of the write-invalidate protocols using fixed-size pages. BCP improves performance by 42.2% for some applications when compared against the case of the fixed-size page.

  • Efficient Evaluation of Aperture Field Integration Method for Polyhedron Surfaces and Equivalence to Physical Optics

    The equivalence between Aperture Field Integration Method (AFIM) and Physical Optical (PO) is discussed for polyhedron surfaces in this paper. The necessary conditions for the equivalence are summarized which demand complete equivalent surface currents and complete apertures. The importance of the exact expressions for both incident and reflected fields in constructing equivalent surface currents is emphasized and demonstrated numerically. The fields from reflected components on additional surface which lies on the Geometrical Optics (GO) reflection boundary are evaluated asymptotically. The analytical expression enhances the computational efficiency of the complete AFIM. The equivalent edge currents (EECs) for AFIM (AFIMEECs) are used to extract the mechanism of this equivalence between AFIM and PO.

  • Ultrasonic Closing Click of the Prosthetic Cardiac Valve

    Mechanical prosthetic cardiac valves generate not only the widely recognized audible closing clicks but also ultrasonic closing clicks, as previously reported by us. A personal-computer-based measurement and analysis system with the bandwidth of 625 kHz has been developed to clarify the characteristics of these ultrasonic closing clicks. Fifty cases in total were assessed clinically, including cases with tilting disk valves, bileaflet valves, and flat disk valves. The ultrasonic closing clicks are damped vibrations continuing for about two milliseconds, and their frequency range was confirmed to be from 8 kHz to 625 kHz, while that of the audible click was up to 8 kHz. Although the sensitivity of the sensor decreased by approximately 30 dB at 625 kHz, effective power of the ultrasonic closing click was confirmed at this frequency. Moreover, it was shown that, surprisingly, the signal power at 625 kHz was still at the same level as that at around 100 kHz. Those wide bandwidth signal components exist independent of the type of mechanical valve, but the spectral pattern shows some dependence on the valve type.

    A fractal image coding scheme using classified range regions is proposed. Two classes of range regions, shade and nonshade, are defined here, A shade range region is encoded by the average gray level, while a nonshade range region is encoded by IFS parameters. To obtain classified range regions, the two-stage block merging scheme is proposed. Each range region is produced by merging primitive square blocks. Shade range regions are obtained at the first stage, and from the rest of primitive blocks nonshade range regions are obtained at the second stage. Furthermore, for increasing the variety of region shape, the 8-directional block merging scheme is defined by extension of the 4-directional scheme. Also, two similar schemes for encoding region shapes, each corresponding to the 4-directional block merging scheme and the 8-directional block merging scheme, are proposed. From the results of simulation by using a test image, it was demonstrated that the variety of region shape allows large shade range regions to be extracted efficiently, and these large shade range regions are more effective in reduction of total amount of codebits with less increase of degradation of reconstructed image quality than large nonshade range regions. The 8-directional merging and coding scheme and the 4-directional scheme reveal almost the same coding performance, which is improved than that of the quad-tree partitioning scheme. Also, these two schemes achieve almost the same reconstructed image quality.

  • Performance of the Modified PML Absorbing Boundary Condition for Propagating and Evanescent Waves in Three-Dimensional Structures

    The recently proposed modified PML (MPML) absorbing boundary condition is extended to three dimensions. The performance of the MPML is investigated by FDTD simulation of a typical microstrip line and a rectangular waveguide. The dominant and higher order modes of the microstrip line and the waveguide are excited separately in the computation. In all of the cases of excitation, the reflection properties of the MPML boundaries are examined for the side walls and the end walls, respectively. Various values of the permittivity and permeability of the MPML medium are tested in the computation, and the variation behavior of reflection from the MPML boundaries is examined. The numerical results reveal that by choosing appropriate values of the permittivity and permeability of the MPML, we can realize efficient absorption of both evanescent waves and propagating waves over a wide frequency band.

  • FD-TD Analysis of Coaxial Probes Inserted into Rectangular Waveguides

    Full-wave FD-TD analysis has been carried out for coaxial probes inserted into waveguides. Both single and symmetrically placed paired coaxial probe structures have been discussed and we have revealed the relation between equivalent circuit parameters and structural parameters of the coaxial probes including cases for large diameter and extension length, which is useful for practical waveguide circuit design. The equivalent circuit parameters calculated from the scattering parameters agreed well with corresponding measured data. From the calculated field in a waveguide, field concentration at sharp edges of probe sole or base, which ought to be taken into account for high power application design has been also discussed. Besides, amplitudes of higher order modes in waveguides excited by coaxial probes or pairs of coaxial probes has been calculated so as to estimate the range beyond which higher order modes decay sufficiently. This estimation is necessary for simple and easy design of probe using circuit theory.

    In order to enhance the energy transfer efficiency in a Cherenkov laser, we propose to use a tapered waveguide with a dielectric thickness properly varied stepwise in the longitudinal direction. With the aid of particle simulation, we investigate the nonlinear characteristics of the Cherenkov laser with the tapered waveguide, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposal for efficiency enhancement.

    Network survivability against various unexpected failures is one of indispensable technologies for the B-ISDN infrastructure. Self-healing algorithm is the technique to automatically restore the failed VP's (virtual paths) in the backbone ATM network. Since the B-ISDN transports various kinds of traffic with various levels of priority (Grade of Service: GoS), the effective self-healing algorithm should orderly restore the failed VP's based on the priority of their traversing traffic. This paper proposes the priority based restoring self-healing algorithm, which realizes the priority based restoring function by the two-timer mechanisms and a simple capacity reserving protocol. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can schedule the restoration process so that the failed VP's with higher priority are restored before the others with lower priority. In addition, the significant improvement in restoration speed for the highest priority traffic class has been achieved.

    Gd2O2S:Tb phosphor thin films have been prepared using the simple technique of electron beam evaporation for large area display applications. The photoluminescence and excitation spectra measurement of Gd2O2S:Tb phosphor thin films suggest that Tb3+ is incorporated into the Gd2O2S lattice at gadolinium sites. Relatively efficient electroluminescence is observed from a ZnS/Gd2O2S:Tb/ZnS sandwich cell.

  • Real-Time Aggregation and Transport of Stored VBR Videos over a CBR Channel

    This paper investigates the lossless video aggregation and transport, a concept of transmitting a group of video sessions as a bundle over a communication network. We focus on the design of optimal transmission plan with minimum receiver buffer requirement for stored variable bit-rate (VBR) videos over a constant bit-rate (CBR) channel without incurring buffer underflow and overflow. For a single video, an efficient algorithm is proposed to calculate the optimal transmission plan in only O(N) time, a significant improvement of the previous result with time complexity of O(N2log N). For multiple video sessions, we propose an aggregation scheme to calculate the changes of optimal transmission plans at the joints or separations, where a session bundled in the aggregated video stream begins or stops. The experimental results show that our algorithms stand out in terms of simplicity and efficiency.

    We consider a finite-capacity single-server queue with constant service and vacation times, which is seen in the time division multiple access (TDMA) scheme. First we derive the probability that j customers remain in the queue when a test customer arrives. Using this probability we then evaluate the probability that the test customer who arrives during the vacation or service time has to wait in the queue for longer than a given time. From these results, we obtain the waiting time distribution for the customer arriving at an arbitrary time. We also show a practical application to wireless TDMA communications systems.

  • An Enhanced Priority Reservation Algorithm for ATM Multicast Switches with a One-Shot Scheduling Scheme

    An enhanced priority reservation algorithm for ATM multicast switches with a one-shot scheduling scheme is proposed. This algorithm is an input reservation method in which priority is selected among input ports considering the number of rejected copy requests and the blocked age of head-of-line (HOL) cells. The operation procedure of the proposed algorithm is described, and the average cell-delay and throughput performance is evaluated by simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm yields better performance than the conventional algorithms.

    In ATM Network, the VBR (Variable Bit Rate) service category is used to accommodate TCP/IP traffic. In an international ATM network with large propagation delay, higher TCP throughput can be obtained by use of window scale option. In order to accommodate TCP traffic with window scale option effectively, it is required to select appropriate values of VBR parameters, i. e. SCR (Sustainable Cell Rate) and MBS (Maximum Burst Size), and to evaluate the impact of UPC (Usage Parameter Control) function on TCP throughput. We have studied those technical issues for the conventional TCP, but the results cannot be applied to TCP traffic with the window scale option due to the TCP terminal performance and the large window size. In this paper, we proposed VBR parameter determination method for TCP with the window scale option and evaluated the values in each condition. These results show that the determined MBS is much smaller than the burst length of TCP segments especially using low performance TCP terminals. Furthermore, we also discuss some experimental results of TCP throughput degradation due to UPC function. It shows that the throughput of TCP with large window size is degraded when the SCR and MBS values used in ATM switch are smaller than the determined values.

  • Application of Soft-In/Soft-Out Viterbi Algorithm to Turbo Trellis-Coded Modulation

    Soft-in/soft-out Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) originally proposed for rate 1/n code is applied to rate m/(m+1) trellis-coded modulation (TCM). In TCM, 2m branches merge into a node in a code trellis. After pruning the branches on path with less path-metric until two best paths remain, SOVA is applied to the pruned trellis. Based on the pruned trellis, an iterative decoding algorithm of turbo TCM is developed. Effects of path memory length and scaling of a value transferred between decoding stages are investigated through simulation. Turbo TCM over 8 PSK and 16 QAM channel with Gaussian noise realize a bit error rate (BER) of 10-5 within 1 dB from the Shannon limit.

    In this paper, we give lower bounds for the generalize Hamming weights of linear codes constructed on affine algebraic varieties. By introducing a number g*, which is determined by a given affine variety, we show that when the order t of generalized Hamming weights is greater than g*, the proposed lower bound agrees with their true generalize Hamming weights. Moreover, if we use the notion of well-behaving, we can obtain a more precise bound. Finally, we compare the proposed bound and the conventional one for algebraic geometric code on the curve Cab.

    A GeSi avalanche photodetector grown on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) passive waveguide is demonstrated. The absorption layer of the detector consisits of alternating layers of 66 Ge0. 44Si0. 56 and 480 Si on SOI substrate. The thick SOI waveguide couples the light from an optical fiber into the GeSi/Si strain-limited thin absorption region. The detector exhibits low dark current, sharp breakdown and an external responsivity of 0. 2 A/W at 1. 3 µm wavelength.
