We propose a new concept of network dimensioning, which is based not only on the grade of service but also on profit. In traditional network dimensioning methodology, the number of circuits on links is designed under a cost-minimization concept with grade of service constraints. Recently, telecommunication markets have become very large and competitive; therefore, we believe that a profit viewpoint is now essential. However, it is difficult to calculate profit in almost all the dimensioning methods currently used, because they mainly employ peak-hour traffic data, while profit depends on all the hourly traffic data which contain both peak and off-peak data. In this paper, we propose using all the hourly traffic data in network dimensioning. From these data and telephone charges for each hour, revenues will be estimated. On the other hand, facility costs will be estimated from the number of circuits. Finally, we can estimate profit from the difference between revenues and facility costs. Focusing on both quality and profits in network dimensioning leads to more advanced quality management and quality control in telecommunications networks than with traditional methodology. This paper outlines a dimensioning method based on profit, and describes its properties, some applications of it, and summarizes further studies.
This paper proposes a novel updating technique, dynamically updating, for achieving extension or modification of functions in a distributed system. Usual updating technique requires synchronous suspension for multiple processes for avoiding unspecified reception caused by the conflict of different versions of processes. Thus, this technique needs very high overhead and it must restrict the types of distributed systems, to which it can be applied, to RPC (remote procedure call) type or client-server type. Using the proposed dynamically updating technique, updating management can be invoked asynchronously by each process with assurance of correct execution of the system, i.e., the system can cope with the effect of unspecified reception caused by mixture of different version processes. Therefore, low overhead updating can be achieved in partner type distributed systems, that is more general type including communications systems or computer networks. Dynamically updating technique is implemented by using a novel distributed algorithm that consists of group communication, checkpoint setting, and rollback recovery. By using the algorithm proposed in this paper, rollback recovery can be achieved with the lowest overhead, i.e., a set of checkpoint determines the last global state for consistent rollback recovery and a set of processes that need to rollback simultaneously is the smallest one. This paper also proves the correctness of the proposed algorithm.

A low power bus architecture with Local and Global Charge-Recycling Bus (Local-CRB and Global-CRB) techniques, featuring virtual stacking of the individual bus-capacitance and the dummy capacitor into a series configuration between supply voltage and ground, has been proposed. These Local and Global CRB schemes make it possible to reduce not only each bus-swing but also a total equivalent bus-capacitance of the ultra multi-bit buses running in parallel. The voltage swing of each bus is given by the recycled charge-supplying from the upper adjacent bus capacitance or the dummy capacitor, instead of the power line. The dramatical power reduction was verified by the simulated and measured data. According to these data, if employing the combination of those CRB schemes in a practical chip, the ultra-high data rate of 25 Gb/s can be achieved while maintaining the power dissipation to be less than 300 mW at Vcc3.6 V for the bus width of 512 bit with the bus-capacitance of 14 pF per bit operating at 50 MHz.

Two types of dynamic termination, latch-type and RC-type, are useful for low-power high-speed chip interconnection where the transmission line is terminated only if the signal is changed. The gate of the termination MOS in the latch-type is driven by a feedback inverter, and that in the RC-type is driven by a differentiating signal through the resistor and capacitor. The power dissipation is 13% for the latch-type, and 11% for the RC-type in a DC termination scheme, and the overshoot is 32% for the latch-type, and 16% for the RC-type in an open scheme, both at a signal amplitude of 2 V. The RC-type is superior for signal swing as low as a 1 V. On the other hand, RC termination requires large capacitance, and thus high power. Diode termination is not effective for a small swing because of the large ON voltage of diodes.

A method for painting a sequence of monochromatic images is proposed. In this method, a color model, whose base components are hue, saturation and intensity, is used to keep the lightness of images unchanged before and after painting. Two successive frames in the monochromatic image sequence and a colored image of the first frame which is interactively painted, are analyzed in order to paint the next monochromatic frame. The painting process is composed of two phases, that is, an automatic coloring phase and an interactive retouching phase. In the automatic coloring phase, hierarchical image segmentation and region matching procedures are performed, and the two attributes of hue and saturation are mapped from the painted image of the first frame to the next image. In the retouching phase, using an interactive paint system based on the color model, users can modify the chromatic components of pixels whose colors were not mapped correctly. Several experiments show that our method is very effective in reducing tedious painting.
In this paper, we report a new approach about parsing and searching problem for a given phonetic lattice. The approach is based on the Divide and Conquer (DC) strategy. By dividing the phonetic lattice, we first construct a PD-tree to represent this lattice, then, we parse through this PD-tree to identify the possible sentence which is supposed to be the speech utterance. Next, we propose a new search scheme called Downward Request (DR) search model to decrease the computation costs, and this search model gives us the optimal or N-best solutions. Experiments performed on Chinese speech recognition show us the good results.

In this paper, it is stated that visualization and abstraction of program specifications can be highly integrated on the basis of decision tables and condition expressions. In order to demonstrate this idea, we developed an automatic programming system called SPACE: SPecification Acquisition and Compiling Engine. SPACE is designed to ease the production of business data processing program. SPACE has functions both to support the creation of visual program specifications and to generate COBOL programs according to the input program specifications. To visualize program specification, SPACE design windows are comprised of two diagrams and four tables in a format similar to the conventional detailed design sheets. To represent module functions, in particular, a visualized computation model called a decision table is used. All the possible execution states of a module are represented by combining the state function called condition expressions. The condition expressions represent the typical file processing patterns in very familiar form to actual business application designer. They do not simply give function values; each of them carries out implicit attached procedures according to the characteristic I/O control logic for business data processing. Hence users can describe program specifications concisely by designating merely the condition expression instead of the detailed I/O control logic. This paper uses sample descriptions of stock control problems to explain how visualization of computation and abstraction of algorithm can be integrated and formalized on a basis of a decision table and a condition expression. Also the paper describes how to generate programs from visual specifications.
This paper studies congestion control schemes for integrated variable bit-rate (VBR) video and data communications, where the quality of service (QOS) of each medium needs to be satisfied. In order to control congestion, we exert here either dynamic resolution control or QOS control. The dynamic resolution control scheme in this paper dynamically changes the temporal or spatial resolution of video according to the network loads. The QOS control scheme here assigns a constant capacity of buffer to each connection and determines the video resolution in order to guarantee the QOS of each medium at the connection establishment. The performance of these schemes is evaluated through simulation in terms of throughput, video frame delay probability distribution, and video frame loss rate. We also examine the effects of priority scheduling and packet discarding on the performance. Numerical results indicate that both dynamic resolution and QOS control attain low delay jitters as well as large video and data throughput. In particular, the QOS control is shown to be more suitable for integrated VBR video and data communications.

In this letter we propose a stabilizing method of phase control for resistively coupled oscillator networks. To demonstrate the effect of the control, we consider the coupled oscillator system containing only voltage type of connections. A state feedback technique to resistor sub-network is used to control the phase of synchronized oscillation. The technique is applied to two and three coupled oscillator cases. Finally we present experimental results, which agree well with the theory.

In this paper, the ATM Mini-Bar System (AMBS) which is a future information providing service infrastructure is proposed. The purpose of AMBS is to provide a multi-media environment in which a user can (1) select and get quickly any needed information, in low cost, at any time, among very large amount of different media information provided by a variety of providers, (2) be charged only for the information which is selected and used, (3) edit or process informations into users' individually requested style or format before using them. The basic concept and configurations of AMBS are also addressed. This system is basically a center-end oriented one-way information providing system. The information center broadcasts its contents to all user equipments based on a user request forecast, and every user equipment stores the delivered contents in its large storage. A user can select one's needed informations from the storage, and may edit or process them within the user equipment. The charge is only on the read informations from the storage, not on all contents in it. The key points of this system are the following three. (A) Introduction of a broadcast (or multicast) media for economical information delivery (exactly speaking, it is a predelivery which means a delivery before request) to user equipments. (B) Introduction of a 1 to 1 communication network for selective charging and control of each user equipments. (C) Introduction of the user equipment storage for Quick response to user information request in most cases with the broadcast (or multicast) information delivery media described above, Separation of information delivery speed and replay speed to increase system flexibility, Local user information processing or editing. As an example of technical solutions, a memory architecture, which is based on hierarchical architecture, is described. AMBS is expected to give some impacts to information industries because it can integrate many kinds of services into the same platform, but some standerdization items are needed to realize it.
Complexity of Boolean functions satisfying the propagation criterion (PC), an extended notion of the perfect nonlinearity, is discussed on several computation models. The following topics are investigated: (i) relationships between the unateness and the degree of the PC, (ii) the inversion complexity of perfectly nonlinear Boolean functions, (iii) the formula size of Boolean functions that satisfy the PC of degree 1, (iv) the area-time-square complexity of VLSI circuits computing perfectly nonlinear Boolean functions, (v) the OBDD size perfectly nonlinear Boolean functions.

This paper describes the design of the reflective concurrent object-oriented specification language RMondel. RMondel is designed for the specification and modeling of distributed systems. It allows the development of executable specifications which may be modified dynamically. Reflection in RMondel is supported by two fundamental features that are: Structural Reflection (SR) and Behavioral Reflection (BR). Reflection is the capability to monitor and modify dynamically the structure and the behavior of the system. We show how the features of the language are enhanced using specific meta-operations and meta-objects, to allow for the dynamic modification of types (classes) and instances using the same language. RMondel specification can be modified by adding or modifying types and instances to get a new adapted specification. Consistency is checked dynamically at the type level as well as at the specification level. At the type level, structural and behavioral constrations are defined to preserve the conformance of types. At the specification level, a transaction mechanism and a locking protocol are defined to ensure the consistency of the whole specification.

This paper describes a method for screening psychiatric patients based on a questionnaire consisting of simple yes/no questions regarding to physical, mental conditions and subjective symptoms which is provided at their first visit to the hospital. The analysis of the questionnaire is important to understand patients' background. One hundred filled out questionnaires were utilized for constructing and evaluating a pseude Bayesian classifier which classifies patients into three categories i.e. Schizophrenic, emotional and neurotic disorders with average correct prediction rate of 73.3%. The rate was 16.6% higher than the result given by experienced medical doctors and the method will be a useful mean for automatic screening of the psychiatric patients.

The paper ptoposes a method to synthesize low-power control-logic modules by combining transistor-size optimization and transistor layout. Transistor sizing and layout work synergistically to achieve power/area optimization. Transistor size minimization provides more spaces for layout to be compacted. Layout compaction results in shorter wire length (i.e. smaller load capacitance), which allows transistors to become smaller. The details of transistor sizing and layout compaction are also described. When applied to circuits with up to 10,000 transistors, the optimizer reduced the average transistor size to one eighth while maintaining the same delay. The power dissipation is cut to half even when wiring capacitances are dominant.

Over the last decade, the Internet has been extremely successful by distinguishing between overlaying applications and underlying networking technologies. This approach allows rapid and independent improvement in both networking and application technologies. The internetworking layer that divides applications and the network enables the Internet to function as a general and evolving infrastructures for data communications. The current Internet architecture offers only best-effort data delivery. However, recent emerging computer and networking technologies, demand the Internet guaranteed performance. In particular, audio and video applications have more rigid delay requirement than those applications which the current Internet supports. To offer guaranteed services in addition to best-effort services, both a new service model and a new architecture are necessary in the Internet architecture. The paper surveys researches and experiments conducted in the Internet community to accommodate a wide variety of qualities of services.
Recent advances of processing speed and window systems in computers, especially workstations, accelerate multi-media data processing (MMDP). Then, a variety of data such as numerics, characters, voice, video, animation and so on, are processed concurrently in a workstation. In data processings, concurrent execution of transactions is a key to improve through-puts. However, concurrent execution without concurrency control may cause inconsistent results. Thus, the concurrency control must be introduced in such systems. However, in MMDP it is ineffective to adopt previous concurrency control methods for ordinal databases since multi-media data are huge and possess a real-time property. This paper discusses concurrency control for MMDP. We propose some new concepts for MMDP, and define a new serializability class called Permissible Serializability which provides high concurrency in MMDP compared with ordinal classes. Then, we propose a concurrency control algorithm TYPE for the Permissible Serializability, and show some simulation results.

This paper surveys low-power circuit techniques for CMOS ULSIs. For many years a power supply voltage of 5 V was employed. During this period power dissipation of CMOS ICs as a whole increased four-fold every three years. It is predicted that by the year 2000 the power dissipation of high-end ICs will exceed the practical limits of ceramic packages, even if the supply voltage can be feasibly reduced. CMOS ULSIs now face a power dissipation crisis. A new philosophy of circuit design is required. The power dissipation can be minimized by reducing: 1) supply voltage, 2) load capacitance, or 3) switching activity. Reducing the supply voltage brings a quadratic improvement in power dissipation. This simple solution, however, comes at a cost in processing speed. We investigate the proposed methods of compensating for the increased delay at low voltage. Reducing the load capacitance is the principal area of interest because it contributes to the improvement of both power dissipation and circuit speed. Pass-transistor logic is attracting attention as it requires fewer transistors and exhibits less stray capacitance than conventional CMOS static cicuits. Variations in its circuit topology as well as a logic synthesis method are presented and studied. A great deal of research effort has been directed towards studying every portion of LSI circuits. The research achievements are categorized in this paper by parameters associated with the source of CMOS power dissipation and power use in a chip.

With the development in portable electronic equipment, the demand for secondary batteries of high energy density is increasing. Recently, nickel metal hydride secondary batteries (Ni/MH) are expanding the market, and lithium ion secondary batteries have been newly developed and commercialized. This paper describes in detail Ni/MH and lithium ion secondary batteries, and reports on their development state and characteristics.
