  • Spatial and Temporal Equalization Based on an Adaptive Tapped-Delay-Line Array Antenna

    This paper describes a spatial and temporal multipath channel model which is useful in array antenna environments for mobile radio communications. From this model, a no distortion criterion, that is an extension of the Nyquist criterion, is derived for equalization in both spatial and temporal domains. An adaptive tapped-delay-line (TDL) array antenna is used as a tool for equalization in both spatial and temporal domains. Several criterion for such spatial and temporal equalization such as ZF (Zero Forcing) and MSE (Mean Square Error), are available to update the weights and tap coefficients. In this paper, we discuss the optimum weights based on the ZF criterion in both spatial and temporal domains. Since the ZF criterion satisfies the Nyquist criterion in case of noise free, this paper applies the ZF criterion for the spatial and temporal equalization as a simple case. The Z transform is applied to represent the spatial and temporal model of the multipath channel and to derive the optimal weights of the TDL array antenna. However, in some cases the optimal antenna weights cannot be decided uniquely. Therefore, the effect on the equalization errors due to a finite number of antenna elements and tap coefficients can be shown numerically by computer simulations.

    A new variable step size Least Mean Square (LMS) FIR adaptive filter algorithm (VSS-CC) is proposed. In the VSS-CC algorithm the step size adjustment (α) is controlled by using the correlation between the output error (e(n)) and the adaptive filter output ((n)). At small times, e(n) and (n) are correlated which will cause a large α providing faster tracking. When the algorithm converges, the correlation will result in a small size α to yield smaller misadjustments. Computer simulations show that the proposed VSS-CC algori thm achieves a better Echo Return Loss Enhancemen (ERLE) than a conventional NLMS Algorithm. The VSS-CC algorithm was also compared with another variable step algorithm, achieving the VSS-CC a better ERLE when the additive noise is incremented.

    This paper condiders a problem of logecal configuration in reconfigurable VCDN (Virtual Circuit Data Networks) which is analyzed through a mimimax approach, and its objective is to minimize the largest delay on any logical link, measured in both queueing delay and propagation delay. The problem is formulated as a 0/1 mixed integer programming and analyzed by decomposing it into two subproblems, called routing and dimensioning problems, for which an efficient hauristic algorithm is proposed in an iterating process made beween the two subproblems for solution improvement. The algorithm is tested for its performance eveluation.

  • 8-kb/s Low-Delay Speech Coding with 4-ms Frame Size

    This paper describes modifications to a previously proposed 8-kb/s 4-ms-delay CELP speech coding algorithm with a view to improving the speech quality while maintaining low delay and only moderately increasing complexity. The modifications are intended to improve the effectiveness of interframe pitch lag prediction and the sub-optimality level of the excitation coding to the backward adapted synthesis filter by using delayed decision and joint optimization techniques. Results of subjective listening tests using Japanese speech indicate that the coded speech quality is significantly superior to that of the 8-kb/s VSELP coder which has a 20-ms delay. A method that reduces the computational complexity of closed-loop 3-tap pitch prediction with no perceptible degradation in speech quality is proposed, based on representing the pitch-tap vector as the product of a scalar pitch gain and a normalized shape codevector.

    A description language for matrix and vector expressions and its compiler for DSPs are shown. They provide both a user-friendly programming environment and efficient codes. In order to increase throughput and to reduce amount of methods based on mathematical laws are introduced. A method to decide the matrix and vector storage location suitable for processing on DSP is also proposed.

  • Integration of Adaptive Equalization and Trellis-Coded Modulation with Interleaving for Land Mobile Communications

    Future digital land mobile communication, for a moving picture, requires more transmission speed and less bit error rate than the existing system does for speech. In the system, the intersymbol interference may not be ignored, because of higher transmission speed. An adaptive equalizer is necessary to cancel intersymbol interference. To achieve low bit error rate performance on the mobile radio channel, trellis-coded modulation with interleaving is necessary. This paper proposes an interleaved trellis-coded modulation scheme combined with a decision feedback type adaptive equalizer of high performance. The reliable symbol reconstructed in the trellis decoder is used as the feedback signal. To make equalizer be free from decoding delay, deinterleaving is effectively utilized. The branch metric, for trellis-coded modulation decoding, is calculated as terms of squared errors between a received signal and an expected signal by taking the reconstructed symbol and the impulse response estimated by the recursive least squares algorithm into account. The metric is constructed to have good discrimination performance to incorrect symbols even in non-minimum phase and to realize path diversity effect in a frequency selective fading channel. Computer simulation results are shown for several channel models. On a frequency selective fading channel, average bit error rate is less than 1/100 of that of the RLS-MLSE equalizer for fdTs=1/1000 at average Eb/N0 beyond 15dB. Performance degradation due to equalization error is less than 1.8dB. Performance is greatly improved by the effect of the reconstructed symbol feedback.

  • Rat-Race Hybrid Rings with a Microwave C-Section

    A rat-race hybrid-ring which includes a coupled-line called microwave C-section is proposed for size reduction. The perfect input match, isolation, equal power split and certain phase differences between two output ports can be satisfied at center frequency as in a normal hybrid-ring. The size of the proposed circuit becomes smaller than that of a normal rat-race built up with a folded non-coupled 3/4-wavelength transmission line, although the frequency characteristics are slightly damaged by the electromagnetic coupling between two folded strips. Theoretical results based on the even and odd mode decomposition method are in good agreement with those of the experimental circuit fabricated at 1 GHz.

    A channel equalization technique on a time division duplex CDMA/TDMA system for wireless multimedia networks is investigated, and the bit error rate performance of the system is theoretically analyzed. The assumed network connects mobile terminals to a node of ATM based high speed LAN through a radio central unit. Only human interface facilities are implemented into the terminal so that users access integrated services through the node of the network. The uplink (from a mobile terminal to a radio central unit) employs a CDMA scheme to transmit human interface signals and the downlink employs a TDMA scheme to transmit display interface signals. Both the CDMA and the TDMA signals occupy the same frequency band. To mitigate bit error rate degradation due to fading, the radio central unit estimates the impulse response of the channel from the received CDMA signals and subtracts the replica signal to cancel the major intersymbol interference (ISI) component. Numerical results using the Nakagami-m fading model and recent propagation measurements show that the proposed TPC technique compensates the fading attenuation and the proposed CEQ cancels the major ISI component. The bit error rate performance of the downlink with the proposed CEQ is superior to that with the DFE by 12dB of the symbol SNR at the BER=10-6 over a specular channel, and the system with the proposed CEQ achieves a BER=10-6 at the symbol SNR=12dB. Furthermore, the channel equalizer is implemented without increases in complexity of the terminal because all the processing on the equalization is carried out only in the radio central unit.

  • An 11-GHz-Band Subharmonic-Injection-Locked Oscillator MMIC

    A subharmonic injection-locked oscillator (ILO) MMIC chain is proposed for the local oscillators and synthesizers used at millimeter-wave frequencies. A fabricated, primary 11-GHz-band injection-locked oscillator MMIC for the first stage ILO in the ILO-chain MMIC, achieves a wide subharmonic-injection-locking range at the subharmonic factors, 1/n (n=1, 2, 3, ), of 1/1, 1/2 and 1/3. The ILO MMIC abilities for synthesizer applications were confirmed with an injection-locking time of only 100-200 nsec, which is less than 1/100 that of PLL oscillators, and also with free-running oscillation performance and a wide injection locking range within a temperature range of -30 and 80.

  • Numerical Evaluation of Propagation Impairments Due to Man-Made Structures on Digital Microwave Links

    Radio disturbances of digital microwave links are likely to increase as man-made structures screen the radio propagation paths, and unwanted waves reflected or scattered by the structures interfere with radio signals. This paper describes a practical method for evaluating the influence of propagation impairments due to man-made structures on digital microwave links and provides some model calculations of those impairments. Since multilevel and quadrature modulation techniques are employed to achieve high spectral efficiency for recent digital transmissions, not only average level attenuation but also in-band distortion and intersymbol interference have to be taken into account. Propagation distortion, diffraction loss and cross-polar interference due to reflected and scattered waves from man-made structures such as buildings and conductor structures are evaluated.

    This paper presents a theoretically best algorithm within the framework of our image noise model for reconstructing 3-D from two views when all the feature points are on a planar surface. Pointing out that statistical bias is introduced if the least-squares scheme is used in the presence of image noise, we propose a scheme called renormalization, which automatically removes statistical bias. We also present an optimal correction scheme for canceling the effect of image noise in individual feature points. Finally, we show numerical simulation and confirm the effectiveness of our method.

  • A Novel Adaptive Filter with Adaptation of Sampling Phase

    An adaptive digital filter with adaptive sampling phase is proposed. The structure of the filter makes use of an adaptive delay device at the input of the filter. The algorithm is derived to determine the value of the delay and the filter coefficients by minimizing MSE (mean square error) between the desired signal and the filter output. The computer simulation of the convergence of the proposed adaptive filter with the input of sinusoidal wave and BPSK modulated wave are shown. According to the simulation, the MSE of the proposed adaptive delay algorithm is lower than that of the conventional LMS algorithm.

    Synchronization of media streams is recognized as an important requirement not only in media retrieval such as a video on-demand service but also in groupware such as a remote conferencing system. In a remote conferencing system, synchronization is more complicated because Live Media Streams (LMS) such as the live raw voice of some participants must be taken into consideration as well as Retrieved Media Streams (RMS) such as media streams retrieved from video equipment. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to synchronize RMSs and LMSs in a remote conferencing system DMSIC (Distributed Multimedia System with Interactive Control) which has been implemented on UNIX workstations connected by Ethernet. In this mechanism, synchronization among RMSs (we call it R & R synchronization) is kept by maintaining the Current Presentation Positions (CPP) on Media Buffers (MB) close to the Ideal Presentation Position (IPP). Synchronization among RMSs and LMSs (we call it R & L synchronization) is kept by adjusting the IPPs among multiple nodes. We have implemented the synchronization mechanism in DMSIC to confirm the effectiveness of it.

    This paper studies a video storage problem that occurs in Video-on-Demand (VOD) networks and in other distributed database systems. Videos should be stored in order to respect various constraints, especially available storage and transmission capacities. We show there exists an algorithm to solve this combinatorial problem through a pricing mechanism and that it converges to a solution under some general conditions. Simulation results with up to 43-node networks and up to 300 videos show that the algorithm is fast.

  • A Practical Test System with a Fuzzy Logic Controller

    A test system with a fuzzy logic controller is proposed to assure stable outgoing quality as well as to raise throughput. The test system controls the number of items under test in accordance with fuzzy information as well as statistical information about incoming quality and outgoing quality. First, an algorithm, minimum-minimum-the center of gravity-weighted mean method, is studied with both fuzzy reasoning rules and membership functions which are used for the control. Second, characteristics of the test system are verified and examined with computer simulations so that the fuzzy logic control rules are determined to realize sufficient sensitivity to process changes. Third, the control rules are installed in the test management processor which commands test equipment for testing very large scale integrated circuits, with programming language C. The authors have obtained satisfactory results through a trial run using a series of lots of 16 bit micro controller units in an IC manufacturing factory. Finally, they study the stability condition of the fuzzy test system.

    This paper studies the problem of reconstructing a planar surface from stereo images of multiple feature points that are known to be coplanar in the scene. We present a direct method by applying maximum likelihood estimation based on a statistical model of image noise. The significant fact about our method is that not only the 3-D position of the surface is reconstructed accurately but its reliability is also computed quantitatively. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated by doing numerical simulation.

    The firing squad synchronization problem is considered for defective cellular automata. A lower bound of time tf for the problem is derived. The state complexity to solve the problem is investigated and it is shown that the state set has to be arbitrary large to obtain solutions of time complexity (n). For memory-augmented defective cellular automata a tf-time solution is given.

  • A New Conformance Testing Technique for Localization of Multiple Faults in Communication Protocols

    Conformance testing techniques are required for the efficient production of reliable communication protocols. A lot of conformance testing techniques have been developed. However, most of them can only decide whether an implemented protocol conforms to its specification. That is, the exact locations of faults are not determined by them. This paper presents some conditions that enable to find locations of multiple faults, and then proposes a test sequence generation technique under such conditions. The correctness proof and complexity analysis of the proposed technique are also given. The characteristics of this technique are to generate test sequences based on protocol specifications and interim test results, and to find locations of multiple faults in protocol implementations. Although the length of the test sequence generated by the proposed technique is a little longer than the one generated by the previous one, the class to which the proposed technique can be applied is larger than that to which the previous one can be applied.
