  • Guard Zone Protected Capacity in Multi-Cell MISO Networks under Fading and Shadowing

    The exact power distribution of the inter-cell interference is obtained explicitly for cell edge users who are surrounded by circular guard zones. Compared with recent works, the underlying channel model is generalized from Rayleigh fading to a combination of Nakagami fading and Gamma shadowing. In addtion, asymptotic analysis shows that the mean power of intercell interference changes from infinite to finite with a guard zone. Based on this interference distribution, the average capacity at the cell edge is further obtained. Special case approximation indicates that the capacity scales proportionally to the exponential of the guard zone size. Analytical capacities are validated by Monte Carlo simulations.

    Due to the recent progress made in camera and network environments, on-line video services enable people around the world to watch or share high-quality HD videos that can record a wider angle without losing objects' details in each image. As a result, users of these services can watch videos in different ways with different ROIs (Regions of Interest), especially when there are multiple objects in a scene, and thus there are few common ways for them to transfer their impressions for each scene directly. Posting messages is currently the usual way but it does not sufficiently enable all users to transfer their impressions. To transfer a user's impressions directly and provide users with a richer video watching experience, we propose a system that enables them to extract their favorite parts of videos as ROI trajectories through simple and intuitive manipulation of their tablet device. It also enables them to share a recorded trajectory with others after stabilizing it in a manner that should be satisfactory to every user. Using statistical analysis of user manipulations, we have demonstrated an approach to trajectory stabilization that can eliminate undesirable or uncomfortable elements due to tablet-specific manipulations. The system's validity has been confirmed by subjective evaluations.

    The paper presents a survey on OpenFlow related technologies that have been proposed as a means for researchers, network service creators, and others to easily design, test, and deploy their innovative ideas in experimental or production networks to accelerate research activities on network technologies. Rather than having programmability within each network node, separated OpenFlow controllers provide network control through pluggable software modules; thus, it is easy to develop new network control functions in executable form and test them in production networks. The emergence of OpenFlow has started various research activities. The paper surveys these activities and their results.

    We propose a fast and resource-efficient agreement protocol on a request set, which is used to realize Byzantine fault tolerant server replication. Although most existing randomized protocols for Byzantine agreement exploit a modular approach, that is, a combination of agreement on a bit value and a reduction of request set values to the bit values, our protocol directly solves the multi-valued agreement problem for request sets. We introduce a novel coin tossing scheme to select a candidate of an agreed request set randomly. This coin toss allows our protocol to reduce resource consumption and to attain faster response time than the existing representative protocols.

    Image binarization refers to convert gray-level images into binary ones, and many binarization algorithms have been developed. The related algorithms can be classified as either high quality computation or high speed performance. This letter presents an algorithm that ensures both benefits at the same time. The proposed algorithm intelligently segments input images into several sub-image, after which the sub-image binarization is performed independently. Experimental results reveal that our algorithm provides the appropriate quality with the medium speed.

    This paper addresses the discrete abstraction problem for stochastic nonlinear systems with continuous-valued state. The proposed solution is based on a function, called the bisimulation function, which provides a sufficient condition for the existence of a discrete abstraction for a given continuous system. We first introduce the bisimulation function and show how the function solves the problem. Next, a convex optimization based method for constructing a bisimulation function is presented. Finally, the proposed framework is demonstrated by a numerical simulation.

    This paper proposes a new optimization problem and several implementation algorithms for energy-efficient clouds where energy efficiency is measured by the number of physical machines that can be removed from operation and turned off. The optimization problem is formulated is such a way that solutions are considered favorable not only when the number of migrations is minimized but also when the resulting layout has more free physical machines which can therefore be turned off to save electricity.

    As a next-generation video compression standard, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) achieves enhanced coding performance relative to prior standards such as H.264/AVC. In the new standard, the improved intra prediction plays an important role in bit rate saving. Meanwhile, it also involves significantly increased complexity, due to the adoption of a highly flexible coding unit structure and a large number of angular prediction modes. In this paper, we present a low-complexity intra prediction algorithm for HEVC. We first propose a fast preprocessing stage based on a simplified cost model. Based on its results, a fast prediction unit selection scheme reduces the number of prediction unit (PU) levels that requires fine processing from 5 to 2. To supply PU size decision with appropriate thresholds, a fast training method is also designed. Still based on the preprocessing results, an efficient mode selection scheme reduces the maximum number of angular modes to evaluate from 35 to 8. This achieves further algorithm acceleration by eliminating the necessity to perform fine Hadamard cost calculation. We also propose a 32×32 PU compensation scheme to alleviate the mismatch of cost functions for large transform units, which effectively improves coding performance for high-resolution sequences. In comparison with HM 7.0, the proposed algorithm achieves over 50% complexity reduction in terms of encoding time, with the corresponding bit rate increase lower than 2.0%. Moreover, the achieved complexity reduction is relatively stable and independent to sequence characteristics.

    This paper is concerned with exploring an extended approach for the stability analysis and synthesis for Markovian jump nonlinear systems (MJNLSs) via fuzzy control. The Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is employed to represent the MJNLSs with incomplete transition description. In this paper, not all the elements of the rate transition matrices (RTMs), or probability transition matrices (PTMs) are assumed to be known. By fully considering the properties of the RTMs and PTMs, sufficient criteria of stability and stabilization is obtained in both continuous and discrete-time. Stabilization conditions with a mode-dependent fuzzy controller are derived for Markovian jump fuzzy systems in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be readily solved by using existing LMI optimization techniques. Finally, illustrative numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

    Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been attracting much attention because of its robustness against frequency selective fading. Instead of well-known cyclic prefix (CP) insertion, known training sequence (TS) insertion can be used for OFDM block transmission (called TS-OFDM). In this paper, we propose a new receiver design, which can obtain the frequency diversity gain through the use of frequency-domain equalization (FDE) for TS-OFDM. A conditional bit error rate (BER) analysis of the proposed FDE is presented. The average BER performance of the TS-OFDM signal transmission in a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated by the Monte-Carlo numerical computation method using the derived conditional BER and is confirmed by computer simulation. Numerical and computer simulation results show the proposed TS-OFDM with FDE improves BER and throughput performance of TS-OFDM compared to the conventional TS-OFDM receiver due to the frequency diversity gain. It is also shown that the proposed TS-OFDM with FDE is more robust against imperfect channel estimation than the conventional TS-OFDM receiver.

    A compact 120-GHz-band finline orthomode transducer (OMT) with high isolation between orthogonal ports (Iop) was designed and fabricated for bidirectional wireless data transmission with polarization multiplexing. To achieve high Iop, finline OMTs normally use a resistive card to decrease unwanted resonance, that occurs on the finline, but adding a resistive card complicates the fabrication process and raises the cost of fabrication. Our proposed finline OMT uses an improved finline design in which the resonance frequency is controlled in order to expel unwanted resonance from the operation bandwidth of the 120-GHz-band wireless link. The proposed finline design enables high Iop without using a resistive card, which simplifies the fabrication process and lowers the cost of fabrication. A square horn antenna, which is attached to the finline OMT, is also designed to suppress unwanted polarization rotation of reflected waves, which further improves Iop. The proposed finline OMT has a transmission loss of less than 1.2dB, return loss of more than 12dB, cross polarization discrimination of more than 30dB, and Iop of more than 50dB across the entire occupied bandwidth of the 120-GHz-band wireless link. These characteristics are sufficient not only for 10-Gbit/s bidirectional data transmission but also for 20-Gbit/s unidirectional 2-ch data transmission by polarization-multiplexing.

    Text Categorization (TC) is a task of classifying a set of documents into one or more predefined categories. Centroid-based method, a very popular TC method, aims to make classifiers simple and efficient by constructing one prototype vector for each class. It classifies a document into the class that owns the prototype vector nearest to the document. Many studies have been done on constructing prototype vectors. However, the basic philosophies of these methods are quite different from each other. It makes the comparison and selection of centroid-based TC methods very difficult. It also makes the further development of centroid-based TC methods more challenging. In this paper, based on the observation of its general procedure, the centroid-based text classification is treated as a kind of ranking task, and a unified framework for centroid-based TC methods is proposed. The goal of this unified framework is to classify a text via ranking all possible classes by document-class similarities. Prototype vectors are constructed based on various loss functions for ranking classes. Under this framework, three popular centroid-based methods: Rocchio, Hypothesis Margin Centroid and DragPushing are unified and their details are discussed. A novel centroid-based TC method called SLRCM that uses a smoothing ranking loss function is further proposed. Experiments conducted on several standard databases show that the proposed SLRCM method outperforms the compared centroid-based methods and reaches the same performance as the state-of-the-art TC methods.

    In this paper, one new class of quaternary generalized cyclotomic sequences with the period 2pq over F4 is established. The linear complexity of proposed sequences with the period 2pq is determined. The results show that such sequences have high linear complexity.

    This paper derives the balanced realizations of second-order analog filters directly from the transfer function. Second-order analog filters are categorized into the following three cases: complex conjugate poles, distinct real poles, and multiple real poles. For each case, simple formulas are derived for the synthesis of the balanced realizations of second-order analog filters. As a result, we obtain closed form expressions of the balanced realizations of second-order analog filters.

    In a cognitive radio (CR) network, the channel sensing scheme used to detect the existence of a primary user (PU) directly affects the performances of both CR and PU. However, in practical systems, the CR is prone to sensing errors due to the inefficiency of the sensing scheme. This may yield primary user interference and low system performance. In this paper, we present a learning-based scheme for channel sensing in CR networks. Specifically, we formulate the channel sensing problem as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), where the most likely channel state is derived by a learning process called Fuzzy Q-Learning (FQL). The optimal policy is derived by solving the problem. Simulation results show the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed scheme.

    This paper presents 10-Gbit/s bidirectional and 20-Gbit/s unidirectional wireless data transmission systems using 120-GHz-band finline orthomode transducers (OMTs). A new finline OMT was fabricated with two improved designs, to adapt it to the data transmission characteristics of the 120-GHz-band wireless link. One improvement is higher isolation between orthogonal ports and the other is lower group delay variation. The measured isolation is more than 59dB at the carrier frequency of the 120-GHz-band wireless link, and the measured group delay variation is 43ps. Using the finline OMT, we developed 10-Gbit/s bidirectional and 20-Gbit/s unidirectional wireless equipment that can transmit two channels of 10-Gbit/s data using polarization multiplexing. With this wireless equipment, we succeeded in 10-Gbit/s bidirectional and 20-Gbit/s unidirectional wireless data transmission, which leads to successful seamless connection to 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 12-ch high definition television signal transmission.

    Designing a medium access control (MAC) protocol is a key for implementing any practical wireless network. In general, a MAC protocol is responsible for coordinating users in accessing spectrum resources. Given that a user in cognitive radio(CR) networks do not have priority in accessing spectrum resources, MAC protocols have to perform dynamic spectrum access (DSA) functions, including spectrum sensing, spectrum access, spectrum allocation, spectrum sharing and spectrum mobility, beside conventional control procedure. As a result, designing MAC protocols for CR networks requires more complicated consideration than that needed for conventional/primary wireless network. In this paper, we focus on two major perspectives related to the design of a CR-MAC protocol: dynamic spectrum access functions and network infrastructure. Five DSA functions are reviewed from the point of view of MAC protocol design. In addition, some important factors related to the infrastructure of a CR network including network architecture, control channel management, the number of radios in the CR device and the number of transmission data channels are also discussed. The remaining challenges and open research issues are addressed for future research to aim at obtaining practical CR-MAC protocols.

    Radio over Fiber (RoF) is a promising technology that is suitable for broadband wireless access systems to cover in-building areas and outdoor dead-spots. However, one issue in RoF transmission that should be considered is the nonlinear distortion caused by Electrical/Optical (E/O) converters. Multicarrier RF (Radio Frequency) signal formats such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), which are commonly employed in broadband wireless communications, are weak against nonlinearities. To enable the linear transmission of OFDM signal in RoF channel, we propose to employ the Envelop Pulse Width Modulation (EPWM) transmission scheme for RoF channel. Two commonly used E/O converters, Mach-Zehnder modulator and direct-modulation of Distributed Feedback Laser Diode (DFB LD), are employed to validate the proposal. Based on the measured nonlinearities of the E/O converters, they are mathematically modeled and their transmission performance are analyzed. A modified Rapp model is developed for the modeling of the DFB LD. Through simulations and experiments, the proposed scheme is shown to be effective in dealing with the nonlinearities of the E/O converters.

  • A New Energy-Aware Source Routing Protocol for Maximization of Network Lifetime in MANET

    In this letter, we propose an energy-aware source routing protocol for maximizing the network lifetime in mobile ad hoc networks. We define a new routing cost by considering both transmit and receive power consumption and remaining battery level in each node simultaneously and present an efficient route discovery procedure to investigate the proposed routing cost. Intensive simulation verifies that the proposed routing protocol has similar performance to the conventional routing protocols in terms of the number of transmission hops, transmission rate, and energy consumption while significantly improving the performance with respect to network lifetime.

    This paper summarizes the current status of regulations, standardization efforts and trials around the world regarding white space (WS) communications, especially television band WS (TVWS). After defining WS communication systems configurations and function and the categories of white space database, the TVWS regulations in United States, United Kingdom, and Japan are summarized. Then regarding status of standardization for TVWS devices, IEEE 802 and IEEE 1900 standards are summarized. Finally ongoing pilot projects and trials of WS communications in the world are summarized, and trends and future direction of research on WS communication systems are summarized.
