An exact expression of error rate is developed for maximal ratio combining (MRC) in an independent but not necessarily identically distributed frequency selective Nakagami fading channel taking into account inter-symbol, co-channel and adjacent channel interferences (ISI, CCI and ACI respectively). The characteristic function (CF) method is adopted. While accurate analysis of MRC performance cannot be seen in frequency selective channel taking ISI (and CCI) into account, such analysis for ACI has not been addressed yet. The general analysis presented in this paper solves a problem of past and present interest, which has so far been studied either approximately or in simulations. The exact method presented also lets us obtain an approximate error rate expression based on Gaussian approximation (GA) of the interferences. It is shown, especially while the channel is lightly faded, has fewer multipath components and a decaying delay profile, the GA may be substantially inaccurate at high signal-to-noise ratio. However, the exact results also reveal an important finding that there is a range of parameters where the simpler GA is reasonably accurate and hence, we don't have to go for more involved exact expression.
We describe a co-channel interference rejection scheme that is suitable for QR-decomposition maximum likelihood detection (MLD) in multiple-input and multiple output (MIMO) systems. A pre-whitening matrix for interference rejection is decomposed into a triangular matrix and its Hermitian matrix by using a complex Gaxpy version of the Cholesky algorithm. The decomposed triangular matrix is used as a spatial pre-filter to whiten co-channel interference. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can suppress co-channel interference streams at the cost of receive diversity order and achieves better transmission performance than QR-decomposition MLD itself in MIMO channels with co-channel interference.

Some wireless OFDMA communication systems support the frequency reuse factor of 1. In order to reduce co-channel interference (CCI) caused by neighbor cells, the fractional frequency reuse (FFR) can be employed. A promising frequency partitioning policy and subcarrier allocation for FFR are essential. In this letter, we employ an efficient frequency partitioning mechanism with less interference and propose an efficient subcarrier allocation algorithm to maximize the sum of users capacity under FFR. We show that the proposed algorithm has higher spectral efficiency than the conventional method as well as significantly high system fairness.

We address the problem of multiuser co-channel interference scheduling in multicell interference-limited networks. Our target is to optimize the network capacity under the SIR-balanced power control policy. Since it's difficult to optimize the original problem, we derive a new problem which maximizes the lower bound of the network capacity. Based on the analysis of this new problem, we propose an interference matched scheduling algorithm. This algorithm considers the caused co-channel interference and the channel conditions to schedule the "matched" users at the same time. We prove that this interference matched scheduling algorithm optimizes the lower bound of the network capacity for any arbitrary numbers of cells and users. Moreover, this scheduling method is low-complexity and can be implemented in a fully distributed fashion. Simulation results reveal that the performance of the proposed algorithm achieves near optimal capacity, even though it does not optimize the network capacity directly. Finally, the proposed algorithm holds a great gain over formerly proposed round robin and power matched scheduling method, especially when the scale of the network is large.

This paper proposes a MIMO-OFDM precoder that can minimize a BER upper bound of the maximum likelihood detector (MLD) under a non-cooperative downlink multicell co-channel interference (CCI) environment. Since there is no cooperation among base stations (BSs), it is assumed that information on the interference can be estimated at a mobile station (MS) and then fed back to the desired BS for the precoder. The proposed scheme controls its precoding parameters under a transmit power constraint so as to minimize the BER upper bound, which is derived from the pairwise error probability (PEP) averaged with respect to CCI plus noise. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed precoder can effectively improve BER performance of cell edge users and is superior in terms of BER to the eigenmode and the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) precoded transmissions which aim to maximize the channel capacity and to minimize MSE, respectively.

This paper proposes joint maximum a posteriori (MAP) detection and spatial filtering for MIMO-OFDM mobile communications; it offers excellent receiver performance even over interference-limited channels. The proposed joint processor consists of a log likelihood generator and a MAP equalizer. The log likelihood generator suppresses cochannel interference by spatially filtering received signals and provides branch metrics of transmitted signal candidates. Using the branch metrics, the MAP equalizer generates log likelihood ratios of coded bits and performs channel decoding based on the MAP criterion. In the first stage, the log likelihood generator performs spatio-temporal filtering (STF) of the received signals prior to the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and is referred to as preFFT-type STF. Estimation of parameters including tap coefficients of the spatio-temporal filters and equivalent channel impulse responses of desired signals is based on the eigenvalue decomposition of an autocorrelation matrix of both the received and transmitted signals. For further improvement, in the second stage, the generator performs spatial filtering (SF) of the FFT output and is referred to as postFFT-type SF. Estimation of both tap coefficients of the spatial filters and channel impulse responses employs the recursive least squares (RLS) with smoothing. The reason for switching from preFFT-type STF into postFFT-type SF is that preFFT-type STF outperforms postFFT-type SF with a limited number of preamble symbols while postFFT-type SF outperforms preFFT-type STF when data symbols can be reliably detected and used for the parameter estimation. Note that there are two major differences between the proposed and conventional schemes: one is that the proposed scheme performs the two-stage processing of preFFT-type STF and postFFT-type SF, while the other is that the smoothing algorithm is applied to the parameter estimation of the proposed scheme. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve excellent PER performance under interference-limited channel conditions and that it can outperform the conventional joint processing of preFFT-type STF and the MAP equalizer.

Some OFDMA-based wireless commuication systems, e.g., Wireless Broadband Internet (WiBro) or Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), support frequency reuse of 1 to maximize spectral efficiency. One of the efficient methods to reduce co-channel interference (CCI) caused by frequency reuse is fractional frequency reuse (FFR). In this paper, we propose and validate a novel frequency partitioning method and subcarrier assignment mechanism to improve system and individual capacity of mobile systems using FFR.

We propose an implementation of the tapped delay line adaptive array (TDLAA) at the base station for improving the BER performance of asynchronous multi-user mobile communication over fast fading channels using multiple antennas. The data of each user at the mobile station, which applies two transmit antennas, are encoded by Space Time Block Code (STBC). The proposed scheme transmits the pilot signal and information data in alternate time slots. We derive performance criteria for designing such a scheme under the assumption that the fading is classified as fast fading. We show that the proposed scheme can suppress co-channel interference (CCI) and defeat Doppler spread effectively.
In this paper, we investigate the performance of maximum ratio combining (MRC) in the presence of multiple cochannel interferences over a flat Rayleigh fading channel. Closed-form expressions of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), outage probability, and average symbol error rate (SER) of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) with M-ary signaling are obtained for unequal-power interference-to-noise ratio (INR). We also provide an upper-bound for the average SER using moment generating function (MGF) of the SINR. Moreover, we quantify the array gain loss between pure MRC (MRC system in the absence of CCI) and MRC system in the presence of CCI. Finally, we verify our analytical results by numerical simulations.

This paper proposes a new parameter estimation method for the MIMO-OFDM MAP receiver with spatial-temporal filters. The proposed method employs eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) so as to attain precise estimates especially under interference-limited conditions in MIMO-OFDM mobile communications. Recursive EVD is introduced to reduce the computational complexity compared to the nonrecursive EVD. The spatial-temporal prewhitening is placed prior to FFT because this arrangement is superior to that of conventional prewhitening posterior to FFT in accuracy of the parameter estimation. In order to improve tracking capability to fast fading, the proposed scheme applies a decision-directed algorithm to the parameter estimation by using log-likelihood ratios of coded bits. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can track fast fading and reduce the complexity to 18 percents of the conventional one, and that the spatial-temporal filtering prior to FFT outperforms the conventional one posterior to FFT.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive guard symbol insertion method for one-cell reuse TDMA cellular systems in which co-channel interference is reduced by adaptively selecting the best transmit-pulse waveform with different guard (null-) symbols according to the average error power (AEP) corresponding to signal-to-interference and noise power ratio (SINR), even though the same frequency channel is used at all base stations. Using the proposed system, current TDMA-based systems are readily extensible to one-cell reuse systems, which achieves higher spectrum efficiency. The system capacity is enhanced using the proposed method; moreover, the required qualities such as blocking probability and outage probability are retained.

This paper proposes a co-channel interference cancellation method for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. Maximum-likelihood multi-user detection (ML-MUD), which is one of the co-channel interference cancellation methods at a receiver side, has excellent bit error rate (BER) performance. However, computational complexity of the ML-MUD is prohibitive, because the ML-MUD must search for the most probable symbol vector from all candidates of the transmitted signals. We apply sphere decoding (SD) to the ML-MUD in order to reduce the computational complexity of the ML-MUD, and moreover we propose a modified version of the SD suitable for the ML-MUD. The proposed method extracts desired signal components from a received signal vector and a channel matrix decomposed the upper triangular form, and then performs the SD to the low dimensional model in order to detect the transmitted signals of the desired user. Computer simulation confirms that the proposed method can suppress the undesired signals and detect the desired signals, offering significant reduction of the computational complexity of the conventional method.

In this paper an adjacent channel interference (ACI) cancellation scheme with undersampling for multi-channel reception is proposed and investigated. Low-IF receiver architecture is used in the multi-channel reception scheme. In this system, signal in the adjacent channel causes interference to the desired signal. The ACI cancellation scheme with analog filter bank has been proposed to mitigate the influence from the adjacent channel [10]. Undersampling technique is applied in this system in order to lower the required sampling frequency and power consumption. The effects of the adjacent channel to the undersampling technique in this scheme is examined and discussed.
A Huffman sequence has a zero-sidelobe aperiodic autocorrelation function except at both shift ends. This paper presents orthogonal sets of the zero correlation zone (ZCZ) Huffman sequences and the application to a quasi-synchronous CDMA system with interferences suppressed. The sequences with low or large peak values are constructed on the basis of sequence spectra corresponding to multiple convolution of elementary sequences, and include the ZCZ sequences. The CDMA system is constructed from the ZCZ sequences, and suppresses intersymbol and interchannel interferences.

This paper proposes a novel pre-FFT type OFDM adaptive array antenna called "Eigenvector Combining." The eigenvector combining array antenna is a realization of a post-FFT type OFDM adaptive array antenna through a pre-FFT signal processing, so it can achieve excellent performance with less computational complexity and shorter training symbols. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed eigenvector combining array antenna shows excellent bit error rate performance close to the lower bound just with 2 OFDM symbol-long training symbols.

Our investigation is presented into analysis of the co-channel interference (CCI) statistic in orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) uplink systems. The derived statistic is then used to analyze the performance of reuse partitioning (RP)-based dynamic channel allocation (DCA). Analysis and simulation results show that the performance of DCA in multi-cell environments is noticeably dependent on the CCI. Finally, the results of the analysis yield the optimum RP area for achieving the maximum spectral efficiency.

With the growing demand for mobile communications, multicarrier (MC) schemes are receiving an increasing amount of attention, primarily because they handle frequency selective channels better than ordinary single-carrier schemes. However, despite offering several advantages, MC systems have certain weak points. One is their high sensitivity to interchannel interference (ICI). The influence of Doppler shift and ICI are the focus of this paper. Newly proposed B3G/4G systems are developed for data transmission rates higher than those of the IEEE 801.11. It is then necessary that the bandwidth of the subcarrier be small. Moreover, for a higher carrier frequency and mobile speed, the influence of the Doppler shift will be large; therefore, the influence of ICI becomes severer. Using a Markov chain approach, we synthesized a turbo equalizer (TE) that minimizes ICI when interference affects the arbitrary number M of adjacent subchannels. This approach shows the complexity of the proposed algorithm exhibits linear growth with respect to M and independence with respect to the total number of subchannels in the multicarrier system. The proposed ICI cancellation scheme can also be effective in the case of multiple Doppler frequency offsets. This makes the proposed approach attractive for practical implementations.

Taking the uplink and downlink cochannel interference and noise into account, we determine the error probability in detecting a binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) signal transmitted over a satellite system containing two high power amplifiers (HPA). The first one is the constituent part of the transmitting ground station and the second one is the constituent part of the satellite station. The emphasis is placed on determining the system performance degradation imposed by the influence of the nonlinear characteristic of the HPA at the transmitting ground station in combination with the negative influences of the uplink and downlink cochannel interference, as well as the nonlinear characteristic of HPA at the satellite station.
In this paper, downlink performance of multicarrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) systems under correlated fading channels is analytically investigated. Under code hopping, a signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and bit error rate (BER) performance are derived in multi-cell environments. In addition, specific conditions to validate the commonly used Gaussian approximation of an interference plus noise distribution in MC-CDMA systems are discussed. It is proved that the approximation is adequate in case of low correlation between subcarriers and a large spreading factor (SF). The proposition is confirmed through comparison between analytical and simulation results.
