Smartphones for wireless communication typically consist of a large area frontal liquid crystal display (LCD), which incorporates a metal back plate, and a back cover chassis made from metal. Leveraging this structure a new approach to construct antennas for smartphones is proposed where the complete metal back cover chassis and LCD back plate are used as the radiating element and ground plane. In the design a feedline is connected between the metal back cover chassis and LCD back plate, along with shorts at various locations between the two metal plates, to control the resonance frequency of the resulting antenna. Multiple-band operation is possible without the need for any slots in the plates for radiation. Results show that antenna frequency reconfigurability can be achieved when switching function is added to the shorts so that several wireless communication bands can be covered. This approach is different from existing metallic frame antenna designs currently available in the market. A design example is provided which uses one PIN diode for the switching shorts and the target frequency bands are 740-780MHz and 900-1000MHz & 1700-1900MHz. The optimization of LC matchings and concerns of hand effects and metallic components between the chassis and LCD metal back plate are also addressed.

A path loss model for low antenna heights below surrounding buildings in residential areas is presented to contribute to the construction of VHF band wireless systems. The model is constructed on the basis of measurement results at 167.65MHz, near center frequency at VHF band. Path loss characteristics in the middle VHF band are compared to those in bands above UHF. The dominant paths in bands above UHF include propagation paths below surrounding buildings, such as paths along roads. However, in the middle VHF band, these paths are instantly attenuated because their 1st Fresnel zone radius is larger than the average building height or road width. The dominant path in the middle VHF band is the over-roof propagation path, and the 1st Fresnel zone of the path is shielded by the buildings and the ground surface. The proposed path loss model has two features. First, it derives the effective height of the ground surface from the terrain profile of the buildings and the ground surface. Second, it uses formulas of a two-path model to take the shielding of the 1st Fresnel zone into account. Finally, it is shown that the proposed model is able to predict the path loss measurement results more accurately than the conventional model.

A new path loss model of interference between mobile terminals in a residential area is proposed. The model uses invertible formulas and considers the effects on path loss characteristics produced by paths having many corners or corners with various angles. Angular profile and height pattern measurements clarify three paths that are dominant in terms of their effect on the accurate modeling of path loss characteristics in residential areas: paths along a road, paths between houses, and over-roof propagation paths. Measurements taken in a residential area to verify the model's validity show that the model is able to predict path loss with greater accuracy than conventional models.

In this paper, we develop a VCASS substitution system (S-VCASS) using a personal mobile terminal in order to improve the effectiveness of VCASS in an environment comprising both VCASS and non-VCASS vehicles. We propose three new pedestrian state judgment algorithms that can be implemented on a personal mobile terminal for inter-vehicle communications. We evaluate the performances of the three proposed algorithms with real vehicles. Finally, we show that the proposed algorithms can recognize vehicles without VCASS.

This paper proposes a novel MP3 watermarking method which is applicable to a mobile terminal with limited computational resources. Considering that in most cases the embedded information is copyright information or metadata, which should be extracted before playing back audio contents, the watermark detection process should be executed at high speed. However, when conventional methods are used with a mobile terminal, it takes a considerable amount of time to detect a digital watermark. This paper focuses on scalefactor manipulation to enable high speed watermark embedding/detection for MP3 audio and also proposes the manipulation method which minimizes audio quality degradation adaptively. Evaluation tests showed that the proposed method is capable of embedding 3 bits/frame information without degrading audio quality and detecting it at very high speed. Finally, this paper describes application examples for authentication with a digital signature.

This paper investigates the performance of multiple monopole antennas mounted on a card-type terminal, which is expected to be used in the systems beyond 3 G, based on the calculated and measured radiation patterns for the 2.0 GHz. We characterize the feasible performance of quarter-wavelength monopole antennas mounted on a card-type terminal in a multiple antenna configuration with narrow element spacing of less than a half-wavelength assuming that the antennas used must satisfy the space restrictions of the mobile terminal. Performance figures of merit for the multiple antenna performance include the beamforming gain, correlation coefficient, and MIMO channel capacity. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of a finite ground plane on the characteristics of multiple monopole antennas using a typical antenna configuration comprising a simple finite ground plane and multiple monopole antennas to discuss the fundamental characteristics.

This paper presents a miniaturized dual-mode Doherty PA module applicable for an HPSK signal and an OFDM 64-QAM signal. Dual-mode operation with identical hardware is realized by introducing a bias switching technique, which changes bias conditions of amplifiers according to transmission signals, and employing dual-mode matching circuits, which are designed based on the results of load-pull measurements using an HPSK signal and an OFDM 64-QAM signal. The Doherty PA module consists of a Doherty stage and a gain stage. Two GaAs-HBTs for a Doherty stage and one GaAs-HBT for a gain stage are integrated onto a 1 mm-square single GaAs-MMIC. In the HPSK mode, maximum output power of 26.7 dBm, power added efficiency (PAE) of 41%, and power gain of 27 dB are obtained in the condition that adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACLR) is under -38 dBc. In the OFDM 64-QAM mode, maximum output power of 21.0 dBm, PAE of 27%, and power gain of 28 dB are obtained under EVM < 3.0%. This is the first multi-mode Doherty PA module suitable for multi peak to average power ratio (PAPR) signals.

Localization of mobile terminals has received considerable attention in wireless communications. In this letter, we present a covariance shaping least squares (CSLS) estimator using time-of-arrival measurements of the signal from the mobile station received at three or more base stations. It is shown that the CSLS estimator yields better performance than the other LS estimators at low signal-to-noise ratio conditions.

Recently, the Doherty amplifier technique has been the focus of attention not only for base stations but also for mobile terminals because of its high power-added efficiency in the large back-off region. In this paper, we present a miniaturized Doherty power amplifier (PA) module for W-CDMA mobile terminals. The developed Doherty PA module consists of a 4-mm-square ceramic substrate (4.0 mm4.0 mm1.5 mm, alumina, dielectric constant = 8.8), a 1-mm-square GaAs MMIC (1.0 mm1.0 mm0.1 mm), and 0603-size SMD passive components. To miniaturize the module size, the optimal designed quarter-wavelength transmission lines, which are used for impedance conversion for carrier amplifier output and phase compensation for peak amplifier input, are embedded in the ceramic module substrate. Two GaAs HBTs for a carrier amplifier and a peak amplifier and base bias circuits for each amplifier are integrated onto a single-chip GaAs MMIC. Measurement results at 1950 MHz in a W-CDMA uplink signal indicate that 27 dBm of the maximum output power, 45% of the power-added efficiency (PAE), 11 dB of power gain, and 43% of PAE at 6 dB back-off, i.e. 24 dBm output power, are obtained with the developed Doherty PA. In other words, the PAE is improved from the theoretical PAE of a conventional class B amplifier, namely, from 23% to 43%. This is the smallest Doherty amplifier developed in the form of a module for mobile terminals.

It is very important to accurately and effectively track the movement of each mobile terminal in the personal communications networks. Accordingly, various dynamic location update schemes reflecting the mobile terminal's moving pattern are proposed in the literature. Important schemes include time-based, movement-based, distance-based, and direction-based location update schemes. In this paper, we intend to improve the performance of the movement-based location update scheme which is simple to implement and shows good performance. The proposed location update scheme reflects each mobile terminal's movement characteristics and reduces the number of unnecessary location updates. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with the previously proposed movement-based location update scheme through simulation. The proposed location update scheme requires three memory elements to maintain the movement history in the mobile terminal. The simulation results show that the location management cost is significantly reduced especially for the case with small call-to-mobility ratio by minimizing the unnecessary location updates intrinsic in the movement-based location update scheme.

In evaluating the teletraffic of mobile communication networks, it is important to model the motion of terminals. In the previous migration model, mobility characteristics of terminals, such as cell dwell time, have been expressed by a single probability distribution. In this paper, we discuss the modeling of the cell dwell time of terminals in each cell. Using measured data we show that cell dwell time differs from cell to cell and follows log-normal distributions rather than conventional exponential distributions.
