The solution of the ordinary kernel ridge regression, based on the squared loss function and the squared norm-based regularizer, can be easily interpreted as a stochastic linear estimator by considering the autocorrelation prior for an unknown true function. As is well known, a stochastic affine estimator is one of the simplest extensions of the stochastic linear estimator. However, its corresponding kernel regression problem is not revealed so far. In this paper, we give a formulation of the kernel regression problem, whose solution is reduced to a stochastic affine estimator, and also give interpretations of the formulation.

The multi-category support vector machine (MC-SVM) is one of the most popular machine learning algorithms. There are numerous MC-SVM variants, although different optimization algorithms were developed for diverse learning machines. In this study, we developed a new optimization algorithm that can be applied to several MC-SVM variants. The algorithm is based on the Frank-Wolfe framework that requires two subproblems, direction-finding and line search, in each iteration. The contribution of this study is the discovery that both subproblems have a closed form solution if the Frank-Wolfe framework is applied to the dual problem. Additionally, the closed form solutions on both the direction-finding and line search exist even for the Moreau envelopes of the loss functions. We used several large datasets to demonstrate that the proposed optimization algorithm rapidly converges and thereby improves the pattern recognition performance.

In an amusement park, an attraction-visiting route considering the waiting time and traveling time improves visitors' satisfaction and experience. We focus on Ising machines to solve the problem, which are recently expected to solve combinatorial optimization problems at high speed by mapping the problems to Ising models or quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) models. We propose a mapping of the visiting-route recommendation problem in amusement parks to a QUBO model for solving it using Ising machines. By using an actual Ising machine, we could obtain feasible solutions one order of magnitude faster with almost the same accuracy as the simulated annealing method for the visiting-route recommendation problem.

Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) are emerging as an inevitable method to tackle the capacity crunch of the cellular networks. Due to the complicated network environment and a large number of configured parameters, coverage and capacity optimization (CCO) is a challenging issue in heterogeneous cellular networks. By combining the self-optimizing algorithm for radio frequency (RF) parameters with the power control mechanism of small cells, the CCO problem of self-organizing network is addressed in this paper. First, the optimization of RF parameters is solved based on reinforcement learning (RL), where the base station is modeled as an agent that can learn effective strategies to control the tunable parameters by interacting with the surrounding environment. Second, the small cell can autonomously change the state of wireless transmission by comparing its distance from the user equipment with the virtual cell size. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve better performance on user throughput compared to different conventional methods.

Applications of continuous-time (CT) comparator include relaxation oscillators, pulse width modulators, and so on. CT comparator receives a differential input and outputs a strobe ideally when the differential input crosses zero. Unlike the DT comparators with positive feedback circuit, amplifiers consuming static power must be employed in CT comparators to amplify the input signal. Therefore, minimization of comparator delay under the constraint of power consumption often becomes an issue. This paper analyzes transient behavior of a CT comparator. Using “constant delay approximation”, the comparator delay is derived as a function of input slew rate, number of stages of the preamplifier, and device parameters in each block. This paper also discusses optimum design of the CT comparator. The condition for minimum comparator delay is derived with keeping power consumption constant. The results include that the optimum DC gain of the preamplifier is e∼e3 per stage depending on the element which dominates load capacitance of the preamplifier.

Since HEVC intra rate control has no prior information to rely on for coding, it is a difficult work to obtain the optimal λ for every coding tree unit (CTU). In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN) based intra rate control is proposed. Firstly, a CNN with two last output channels is used to predict the key parameters of the CTU R-λ curve. For well training the CNN, a combining loss function is built and the balance factor γ is explored to achieve the minimum loss result. Secondly, the initial CTU λ can be calculated by the predicted results of the CNN and the allocated bit per pixel (bpp). According to the rate distortion optimization (RDO) of a frame, a spatial equation is derived between the CTU λ and the frame λ. Lastly, The CTU clipping function is used to obtain the optimal CTU λ for the intra rate control. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improves the intra rate control performance significantly with a good rate control accuracy.

Information exchange through a relay node is attracting attention for applying machine-to-machine communications. If the node demodulates the received signal in relay processing confidentially, the information leakage through the relay station is a problem. In wireless MIMO switching, the frequency spectrum usage efficiency can be improved owing to the completion of information exchange within a short time. This study proposes a novel wireless MIMO switching method for secure information exchange. An overloaded situation, in which the access nodes are one larger than the number of antennas in the relay node, makes the demodulation of the relay node difficult. The access schedule of nodes is required for maintaining the overload situation and the high information exchange efficiency. This study derives the equation model of the access schedule and constructs an access schedule with fewer time periods in the integer programming problem. From the computer simulation, we confirm that the secure capacity of the proposed MIMO switching is larger than that of the original one, and the constructed access schedule is as large as the ideal and minimum time period for information exchange completion.

Service composition optimization is a classic NP-hard problem. How to quickly select high-quality services that meet user needs from a large number of candidate services is a hot topic in cloud service composition research. An efficient second-order beetle swarm optimization is proposed with a global search ability to solve the problem of cloud service composition optimization in this study. First, the beetle antennae search algorithm is introduced into the modified particle swarm optimization algorithm, initialize the population bying using a chaotic sequence, and the modified nonlinear dynamic trigonometric learning factors are adopted to control the expanding capacity of particles and global convergence capability. Second, modified secondary oscillation factors are incorporated, increasing the search precision of the algorithm and global searching ability. An adaptive step adjustment is utilized to improve the stability of the algorithm. Experimental results founded on a real data set indicated that the proposed global optimization algorithm can solve web service composition optimization problems in a cloud environment. It exhibits excellent global searching ability, has comparatively fast convergence speed, favorable stability, and requires less time cost.

We propose a useful formulation for ill-posed inverse problems in Hilbert spaces with nonlinear clipping effects. Ill-posed inverse problems are often formulated as optimization problems, and nonlinear clipping effects may cause nonconvexity or nondifferentiability of the objective functions in the case of commonly used regularized least squares. To overcome these difficulties, we present a tractable formulation in which the objective function is convex and differentiable with respect to optimization variables, on the basis of the Bregman divergence associated with the primitive function of the clipping function. By using this formulation in combination with the representer theorem, we need only to deal with a finite-dimensional, convex, and differentiable optimization problem, which can be solved by well-established algorithms. We also show two practical examples of inverse problems where our theory can be applied, estimation of band-limited signals and time-harmonic acoustic fields, and evaluate the validity of our theory by numerical simulations.

Well annotated dataset is crucial to the training of object detectors. However, the production of finely annotated datasets for object detection tasks is extremely labor-intensive, therefore, cloud sourcing is often used to create datasets, which leads to these datasets tending to contain incorrect annotations such as inaccurate localization bounding boxes. In this study, we highlight a problem of object detection with noisy bounding box annotations and show that these noisy annotations are harmful to the performance of deep neural networks. To solve this problem, we further propose a framework to allow the network to modify the noisy datasets by alternating refinement. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed framework can significantly alleviate the influences of noise on model performance.

In the bin packing problem, we are asked to place given items, each being of size between zero and one, into bins of capacity one. The goal is to minimize the number of bins that contain at least one item. An online algorithm for the bin packing problem decides where to place each item one by one when it arrives. The asymptotic approximation ratio of the bin packing problem is defined as the performance of an optimal online algorithm for the problem. That value indicates the intrinsic hardness of the bin packing problem. In this paper we study the bin packing problem in which every item is of either size α or size β (≤ α). While the asymptotic approximation ratio for $alpha > rac{1}{2}$ was already identified, that for $alpha leq rac{1}{2}$ is only partially known. This paper is the first to give a lower bound on the asymptotic approximation ratio for any $alpha leq rac{1}{2}$, by formulating linear optimization problems. Furthermore, we derive another lower bound in a closed form by constructing dual feasible solutions.

This paper presents a distributed server allocation model with preventive start-time optimization against a single server failure. The presented model preventively determines the assignment of servers to users under each failure pattern to minimize the largest maximum delay among all failure patterns. We formulate the proposed model as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. We prove the NP-completeness of the considered problem. As the number of users and that of servers increase, the size of ILP problem increases; the computation time to solve the ILP problem becomes excessively large. We develop a heuristic approach that applies simulated annealing and the ILP approach in a hybrid manner to obtain the solution. Numerical results reveal that the developed heuristic approach reduces the computation time by 26% compared to the ILP approach while increasing the largest maximum delay by just 3.4% in average. It reduces the largest maximum delay compared with the start-time optimization model; it avoids the instability caused by the unnecessary disconnection permitted by the run-time optimization model.

This paper investigates a constrained distributed online optimization problem over strongly connected communication networks, where a local cost function of each agent varies in time due to environmental factors. We propose a distributed online projected subgradient method over unbalanced directed networks. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by a regret which is defined by the error between the cumulative cost over time and the cost of the optimal strategy in hindsight. We show that a logarithmic regret bound can be achieved for strongly convex cost functions. We also demonstrate the validity of the proposed method through a numerical example on distributed estimation over a diffusion field.

Boarding is the last step of aircraft turnaround and its completion in the shortest possible time is desired. In this paper, we propose a new boarding strategy that outperforms conventional strategies such as the back-to-front strategy and the outside-in strategy. The Steffen method is known as one of the most efficient boarding strategies in literature, but it is hard to be realized in the real situation because the complete sorting of passengers in a prescribed order is required. The proposed strategy shows a performance close to that of the Steffen method and can be easily implemented by using a special gate system.

The reconnaissance mode with the cooperation of two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with airborne visual tracking platforms is a common practice for localizing a target. Apart from the random noises from sensors, the localization performance is much dependent on their cooperative trajectories. In our previous work, we have proposed a cooperative trajectory generating method that proves better than EKF based method. In this letter, an improved online trajectory generating method is proposed to enhance the previous one. First, the least square estimation method has been replaced with a geometric-optimization based estimation method, which can obtain a better estimation performance than the least square method proposed in our previous work; second, in the trajectory optimization phase, the position error caused by estimation method is also considered, which can further improve the optimization performance of the next way points of the two UAVs. The improved method can well be applied to the two-UAV trajectory planning for corporative target localization, and the simulation results confirm that the improved method achieves an obviously better localization performance than our previous method and the EKF-based method.

This paper studies a harvested power-oriented simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) scheme over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference channels in which energy harvesting (EH) circuits exhibit nonlinearity. To maximize the power harvested by all receivers, we propose an algorithm to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming vectors, power splitting (PS) ratios and the receive decoding vectors. As all variables are coupled to some extent, the problem is non-convex and hard to solve. To deal with this non-convex problem, an iterative optimization method is proposed. When two variables are fixed, the third variable is optimized. Specifically, when the transmit beamforming vectors are optimized, the transferred objective function is the sum of several fractional functions. Non-linear sum-of-ratios programming is used to solve the transferred objective function. The convergence and advantage of our proposed scheme compared with traditional EH circuits are validated by simulation results.

In network function virtualization (NFV) environments, service chaining is an emerging technology that enables network operators to provide network service dynamically and flexibly by using virtual network function (VNF). In the service chaining, a service chain is expected to be constructed based on VNF performances such as dependences among VNFs and traffic changing effects in VNFs. For achieving optimal data transmission services in NFV environments, we focus on the optimal service chain construction based on VNF performances so that both the maximum amount of traffic on links and the total number of VNF instances are decreased. In this paper, at first, an optimization problem is formulated for determining placements of VNFs and a route for each service chain. The service chains can be constructed by solving this optimization problem with an optimization software or meta-heuristic algorithm. Then, for the optimization problem, we propose a heuristic service chain construction algorithm. By using our proposed algorithm, the service chains can be constructed appropriately more quickly. We evaluate the performance of the proposed heuristic algorithm with simulation, and we investigate the effectiveness of the heuristic algorithm from the performance comparison. From some numerical examples, we show that the proposed heuristic algorithm is effective to decrease the amount of traffic and the number of VNF instances. Moreover, it is shown that our proposed heuristic algorithm can construct service chains quickly.

Improvement of output and lifetime is a problem for biofuel cells. A structure was adopted in which gelation mixed with agarose and fuel (fructose) was sandwiched by electrodes made of graphene-coated carbon fiber. The cathode surface not contacting the gel was exposed to air. In addition, the anode surface not contacting the gel was in contact with fuel liquid to prevent the gel from being dry. The power density of the fuel cell was improved by increasing oxygen supply from air and the lifetime was improved by maintaining wet gel, that is, the proposed structure was a hybrid type having advantages of both fuel gel and fuel liquid. The output increased almost up to that of just using fuel gel and did not decrease significantly over time. The maximum power density in the proposed system was approximately 74.0 µW/cm2, an enhancement of approximately 1.5 times that in the case of using liquid fuel. The power density after 24 h was approximately 46.1 µW/cm2, which was 62% of the initial value.

In this paper, the distributed cooperative communication of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is studied, where the condition number (CN) and the inner product (InP) are used to measure the quality of communication links. By optimizing the relative position of UAVs, large channel capacity and stable communication links can be obtained. Using the spherical wave model under the line of sight (LOS) channel, CN expression of the channel matrix is derived when there are Nt transmitters and two receivers in the system. In order to maximize channel capacity, we derive the UAVs position constraint equation (UAVs-PCE), and the constraint between BS elements distance and carrier wavelength is analyzed. The result shows there is an area where no matter how the UAVs' positions are adjusted, the CN is still very large. Then a special scenario is considered where UAVs form a rectangular lattice array, and the optimal constraint between communication distance and UAVs distance is derived. After that, we derive the InP of channel matrix and the gradient expression of InP with respect to UAVs' position. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to minimize the CN and the gradient descent (GD) algorithm is used to minimize the InP by optimizing UAVs' position iteratively. Both of the two algorithms present great potentials for optimizing the CN and InP respectively. Furthermore, a hybrid algorithm named PSO-GD combining the advantage of the two algorithms is proposed to maximize the communication capacity with lower complexity. Simulations show that PSO-GD is more efficient than PSO and GD. PSO helps GD to break away from local extremum and provides better positions for GD, and GD can converge to an optimal solution quickly by using the gradient information based on the better positions. Simulations also reveal that a better channel can be obtained when those parameters satisfy the UAVs position constraint equation (UAVs-PCE), meanwhile, theory analysis also explains the abnormal phenomena in simulations.

Multi-objective evolutionary algorithms are widely used in many engineering optimization problems and artificial intelligence applications. Ant lion optimizer is an outstanding evolutionary method, but two issues need to be solved to extend it to the multi-objective optimization field, one is how to update the Pareto archive, and the other is how to choose elite and ant lions from archive. We develop a novel multi-objective variant of ant lion optimizer in this paper. A new measure combining Pareto dominance relation and distance information of individuals is put forward and used to tackle the first issue. The concept of time weight is developed to handle the second problem. Besides, mutation operation is adopted on solutions in middle part of archive to further improve its performance. Eleven functions, other four algorithms and four indicators are taken to evaluate the new method. The results show that proposed algorithm has better performance and lower time complexity.
