Due to the revitalization of the semiconductor industry and efforts to reduce labor and unmanned operations in the retail and food manufacturing industries, objects to be recognized at production sites are increasingly diversified in color and design. Depending on the target objects, it may be more reliable to process only color information, while intensity information may be better, or a combination of color and intensity information may be better. However, there are not many conventional method for optimizing the color and intensity information to be used, and deep learning is too costly for production sites. In this paper, we optimize the combination of the color and intensity information of a small number of pixels used for matching in the framework of template matching, on the basis of the mutual relationship between the target object and surrounding objects. We propose a fast and reliable matching method using these few pixels. Pixels with a low pixel pattern frequency are selected from color and grayscale images of the target object, and pixels that are highly discriminative from surrounding objects are carefully selected from these pixels. The use of color and intensity information makes the method highly versatile for object design. The use of a small number of pixels that are not shared by the target and surrounding objects provides high robustness to the surrounding objects and enables fast matching. Experiments using real images have confirmed that when 14 pixels are used for matching, the processing time is 6.3 msec and the recognition success rate is 99.7%. The proposed method also showed better positional accuracy than the comparison method, and the optimized pixels had a higher recognition success rate than the non-optimized pixels.
Recent years have seen a general resurgence of interest in analog signal processing and computing architectures. In addition, extensive theoretical and experimental literature on chaos and analog chaotic oscillators exists. One peculiarity of these circuits is the ability to generate, despite their structural simplicity, complex spatiotemporal patterns when several of them are brought towards synchronization via coupling mechanisms. While by no means a systematic survey, this paper provides a personal perspective on this area. After briefly covering design aspects and the synchronization phenomena that can arise, a selection of results exemplifying potential applications is presented, including in robot control, distributed sensing, reservoir computing, and data augmentation. Despite their interesting properties, the industrial applications of these circuits remain largely to be realized, seemingly due to a variety of technical and organizational factors including a paucity of design and optimization techniques. Some reflections are given regarding this situation, the potential relevance to discontinuous innovation in analog circuit design of chaotic oscillators taken both individually and as synchronized networks, and the factors holding back the transition to higher levels of technology readiness.

A formal graph system (FGS for short) is a logic program consisting of definite clauses whose arguments are graph patterns instead of first-order terms. The definite clauses are referred to as graph rewriting rules. An FGS is shown to be a useful unifying framework for learning graph languages. In this paper, we show the polynomial-time PAC learnability of a subclass of FGS languages defined by parameterized hereditary FGSs with bounded degree, from the viewpoint of computational learning theory. That is, we consider VH-FGSLk,Δ(m, s, t, r, w, d) as the class of FGS languages consisting of graphs of treewidth at most k and of maximum degree at most Δ which is defined by variable-hereditary FGSs consisting of m graph rewriting rules having TGP patterns as arguments. The parameters s, t, and r denote the maximum numbers of variables, atoms in the body, and arguments of each predicate symbol of each graph rewriting rule in an FGS, respectively. The parameters w and d denote the maximum number of vertices of each hyperedge and the maximum degree of each vertex of TGP patterns in each graph rewriting rule in an FGS, respectively. VH-FGSLk,Δ(m, s, t, r, w, d) has infinitely many languages even if all the parameters are bounded by constants. Then we prove that the class VH-FGSLk,Δ(m, s, t, r, w, d) is polynomial-time PAC learnable if all m, s, t, r, w, d, Δ are constants except for k.
We propose a non-photorealistic rendering method to automatically generate reaction-diffusion-pattern-like images from photographic images. The proposed method uses smoothing filter with a circular window, and changes the size of the circular window depending on the position in photographic images. By partially changing the size of the circular window, the size of reaction-diffusion patterns can be changed partially. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments were conducted to apply the proposed method to various photographic images.

The problem caused by fake news continues to worsen in today's online social networks. Intuitively, it seems effective to issue corrections as a countermeasure. However, corrections can, ironically, strengthen attention to fake news, which worsens the situation. This paper proposes a model for describing the interaction between fake news and the corrections as a reaction-diffusion system; this yields the mechanism by which corrections increase attention to fake news. In this model, the emergence of groups of users who believe in fake news is understood as a Turing pattern that appears in the activator-inhibitor model. Numerical calculations show that even if the network structure has no spatial bias, the interaction between fake news and the corrections creates groups that are strongly interested in discussing fake news. Also, we propose and evaluate a basic strategy to counter fake news.

Let us consider a regular expression r of length m and a text string T of length n over an alphabet Σ. Then, the RE minimal substring search problem is to find all minimal substrings of T matching r. Yamamoto proposed O(mn) time and O(m) space algorithm using a Thompson automaton. In this paper, we improve Yamamoto's algorithm by introducing parallelism. The proposed algorithm runs in O(mn) time in the worst case and in O(mn/p) time in the best case, where p denotes the number of processors. Besides, we show a parameter related to the parallel time of the proposed algorithm. We evaluate the algorithm experimentally.

Unique spatial eigenmodes for the spherical coordinate system are shown to be successfully synthesized by properly allocated combinations of current distributions along θ' and φ' on a spherical conformal array. The allocation ratios are analytically found in a closed form with a matrix that relates the expansion coefficients of the current to its radiated field. The coefficients are obtained by general Fourier expansion of the current and the mode expansion of the field, respectively. The validity of the obtained formulas is numerically confirmed, and important effects of the sphere radius and the degrees of the currents on the radiated fields are numerically explained. The formulas are used to design six current distributions that synthesize six unique eigenmodes. The accuracy of the synthesized fields is quantitatively investigated, and the accuracy is shown to be remarkably improved by more than 27dB with two additional kinds of current distributions.

Inter-channel correlation is one of the redundancy which need to be eliminated in video coding. In the latest video coding standard H.266/VVC, the DM (Direct Mode) and CCLM (Cross-component Linear Model) modes have been introduced to reduce the similarity between luminance and chroma. However, inter-channel correlation is still observed. In this paper, a new inter-channel prediction algorithm is proposed, which utilizes coloring principle to predict chroma pixels. From the coloring perspective, for most natural content video frames, the three components Y, U and V always demonstrate similar coloring pattern. Therefore, the U and V components can be predicted using the coloring pattern of the Y component. In the proposed algorithm, correlation coefficients are obtained in a lightweight way to describe the coloring relationship between current pixel and reference pixel in Y component, and used to predict chroma pixels. The optimal position for the reference samples is also designed. Base on the selected position of the reference samples, two new chroma prediction modes are defined. Experiment results show that, compared with VTM 12.1, the proposed algorithm has an average of -0.92% and -0.96% BD-rate improvement for U and V components, for All Intra (AI) configurations. At the same time, the increased encoding time and decoding time can be ignored.
Recently several researchers have proposed various methods to build intelligent stock trading and portfolio management systems using rapid advancements in artificial intelligence including machine learning techniques. However, existing technical analysis-based stock price prediction studies primarily depend on price change or price-related moving average patterns, and information related to trading volume is only used as an auxiliary indicator. This study focuses on the effect of changes in trading volume on stock prices and proposes a novel method for short-term stock price predictions based on trading volume patterns. Two rapid volume decrease patterns are defined based on the combinations of multiple volume moving averages. The dataset filtered using these patterns is learned through the supervised learning of neural networks. Experimental results based on the data from Korea Composite Stock Price Index and Korean Securities Dealers Automated Quotation, show that the proposed prediction system can achieve a trading performance that significantly exceeds the market average.

This paper proposes novel test techniques for high accuracy measurement of ADCs and a ramp generator on a CMOS image sensor (CIS) chip. The test circuit for the ADCs has a dual path and has an ability of multi-functional fine pattern generator that can define any input for each column to evaluate CIS specific characteristics electrically. The test circuit for the ramp generator can realize an on-chip current cell test and reject the current cell failure within 1LSB accuracy. We fabricated the test sensor using 55nm CIS process and measured the IP characteristics. Measured results show INL of 14.6LSB, crosstalk of 14.9LSB and column interference noise of 5.4LSB. These measured results agree with the designed values. By using this technique, we confirmed the accurate ADC measurement can be realized without being affected by the ambiguity of the optical input.

Deep learning applications have often been processed in the cloud or on servers. Still, for applications that require privacy protection and real-time processing, the execution environment is moved to edge devices. Edge devices that implement a neural network (NN) are physically accessible to an attacker. Therefore, physical attacks are a risk. Fault attacks on these devices are capable of misleading classification results and can lead to serious accidents. Therefore, we focus on the softmax function and evaluate a fault attack using a clock glitch against NN implemented in an 8-bit microcontroller. The clock glitch is used for fault injection, and the injection timing is controlled by monitoring the power waveform. The specific waveform is enrolled in advance, and the glitch timing pulse is generated by the sum of absolute difference (SAD) matching algorithm. Misclassification can be achieved by appropriately injecting glitches triggered by pattern detection. We propose a countermeasure against fault injection attacks that utilizes the randomization of power waveforms. The SAD matching is disabled by random number initialization on the summation register of the softmax function.

In this paper, the influence of surface waves on the characteristics of on-glass antennas is clarified to enable appropriates design of C-band automotive on-glass antennas. Composite glasses are used in automotive windshields. These automotive composite glasses are composed of three layers. First, the surface wave properties of composite glass are investigated. Next, the effects of surface waves on the reflection coefficient characteristics of on-glass antennas are investigated. Finally, the antenna placement to reduce surface wave effect will be presented. Electromagnetic field analysis of a dipole antenna placed at the center of a 300mm × 300mm square flat composite glass showed that the electric field strength in the glass had ripples with the half wavelength period of the surface waves. Therefore, it was confirmed that standing waves are generated because of these surface waves. In addition, it is confirmed that ripples occur in the reflection coefficient at frequencies. Glass size is divisible by each of those guide wavelengths. Furthermore, it was clarified that the reflection coefficient fluctuates with respect to the distance between the antenna and a metal frame, which is attached to the end face in the direction perpendicular to the thickness of the glass because of the influence of standing waves caused by the surface waves; additionally, the reflection coefficient gets worse when the distance between the antenna and the metal frame is an integral multiple of one half wavelength. A similar tendency was observed in an electric field analysis using a model that was shaped like the actual windshield shape. Because radiation patterns also change as a result of the influence of surface waves and metal frames, the results imply that it is necessary to consider the actual device size and the metal frames when designing automotive on-glass antennas.

In this letter, a method for the construction of polar codes based on the mutual information approximation (MIA) is proposed for the 4Tb/in2 two-dimensional inter-symbol interference (2D-ISI) channels, such as the bit-patterned magnetic recording (BPMR) and two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR). The basic idea is to exploit the MIA between the input and output of a 2D detector to establish a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) distribution model based on the MIA results, which compensates the gap caused by the 2D ISI channel. Consequently, the polar codes obtained by the optimization techniques previously developed for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels can also have satisfactory performances over 2D-ISI channels. Simulated results show that the proposed polar codes can outperform the polar codes constructed by the traditional methods over 4Tb/in2 2D-ISI channels.

Resource limitations require that bugs be resolved efficiently. The bug modification process uses bug reports, which are generated from service user reports. Developers read these reports and fix bugs. Developers discuss bugs by posting comments directly in bug reports. Although several studies have investigated the initial report in bug reports, few have researched the comments. Our research focuses on bug reports. Currently, everyone is free to comment, but the bug fixing time may be affected by how to comment. Herein we investigate the topic of comments in bug reports. Mixed topics do not affect the bug fixing time. However, the bug fixing time tends to be shorter when the discussion length of the phenomenon is short.

The volume of digital information is growing at an extremely fast pace which, in turn, exacerbates the need of efficient mechanisms to find the presence of a pattern in an input text or a set of input strings. Combining the processing power of Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with matching algorithms seems a natural alternative to speedup the string-matching process. This work proposes a Parallel Rabin-Karp implementation (PRK) that encompasses a fast-parallel prefix-sums algorithm to maximize parallelization and accelerate the matching verification. Given an input text T of length n and p patterns of length m, the proposed implementation finds all occurrences of p in T in O(m+q+n/τ+nm/q) time, where q is a sufficiently large prime number and τ is the available number of threads. Sequential and parallel versions of the PRK have been implemented. Experiments have been executed on p≥1 patterns of length m comprising of m=10, 20, 30 characters which are compared against a text string of length n=227. The results show that the parallel implementation of the PRK algorithm on NVIDIA V100 GPU provides speedup surpassing 372 times when compared to the sequential implementation and speedup of 12.59 times against an OpenMP implementation running on a multi-core server with 128 threads. Compared to another prominent GPU implementation, the PRK implementation attained speedup surpassing 37 times.

An active gate driver IC generates arbitrary switching waveform is proposed to reduce the switching loss, the voltage overshoot, and the electromagnetic interference (EMI) by optimizing the switching pattern. However, it is hard to find optimal switching pattern because the switching pattern has huge possible combinations. In this paper, the method to estimate the switching loss and the voltage overshoot from the switching pattern with neural network (NN) is proposed. The implemented NN model obtains reasonable learning results for data-sets.
We propose a nonphotorealistic rendering method for generating checkered pattern images from photographic images. The proposed method is executed by iterative calculation using a Prewitt filter with an expanded window size and can automatically generate checkered patterns according to changes in edges and shade of photographic images. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, an experiment was conducted using various photographic images. An additional experiment was conducted to visually confirm the checkered pattern images generated by changing the iteration number, window size, and parameter to emphasize the checkered patterns.
This paper proposes a deterministic pilot pattern placement optimization scheme based on the quantum genetic algorithm (QGA) which aims to improve the performance of sparse channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. By minimizing the mutual incoherence property (MIP) of the sensing matrix, the pilot pattern placement optimization is modeled as the solution of a combinatorial optimization problem. QGA is used to solve the optimization problem and generate optimized pilot pattern that can effectively avoid local optima traps. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can generate a sensing matrix with a smaller MIP than a random search or the genetic algorithm (GA), and the optimized pilot pattern performs well for sparse channel estimation in OFDM systems.

As smartphones and IoT devices become widespread, probabilistic event streams, which are continuous analysis results of sensing data, have received a lot of attention. One of the applications of probabilistic event streams is monitoring of time series events based on regular expressions. That is, we describe a monitoring query such as “Has the tracked object moved from RoomA to RoomB in the past 30 minutes?” by using a regular expression, and then check whether corresponding events occur in a probabilistic event stream with a sliding window. Although we proposed the fundamental monitoring method of time series events in our previous work, three problems remain: 1) it is based on an unusual assumption about slide size of a sliding window, 2) the grammar of pattern queries did not include “negation”, and 3) it was not optimized for multiple monitoring queries. In this paper, we propose several techniques to solve the above problems. First, we remove the assumption about slide size, and propose adaptive slicing of sliding windows for efficient probability calculation. Second, we calculate the occurrence probability of a negation pattern by using an inverted DFA. Finally, we propose the merge of multiple DFAs based on disjunction to process multiple queries efficiently. Experimental results using real and synthetic datasets demonstrate effectiveness of our approach.

A regular pattern is a string consisting of constant symbols and distinct variable symbols. The language of a regular pattern is the set of all constant strings obtained by replacing all variable symbols in the regular pattern with non-empty strings. The present paper deals with the learning problem of languages of regular patterns within Angluin's query learning model, which is an established mathematical model of learning via queries in computational learning theory. The class of languages of regular patterns was known to be identifiable from one positive example using a polynomial number of membership queries, in the query learning model. In present paper, we show that the class of languages of regular patterns is identifiable from one positive example using a linear number of membership queries, with respect to the length of the positive example.
