  • Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11 DCF and IEEE 802.11e EDCA in Non-saturation Condition

    We analyze the MAC performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF and 802.11e EDCA in non-saturation condition where device does not have packets to transmit sometimes. We assume that a flow is not generated while the previous flow is in service and the number of packets in a flow is geometrically distributed. In this paper, we take into account the feature of non-saturation condition in standards: possibility of transmission performed without preceding backoff procedure for the first packet arriving at the idle station. Our approach is to model a stochastic behavior of one station as a discrete time Markov chain. We obtain four performance measures: normalized channel throughput, average packet HoL (head of line) delay, expected time to complete transmission of a flow and packet loss probability. Our results can be used for admission control to find the optimal number of stations with some constraints on these measures.

  • Design of Class DE Amplifier with Nonlinear Shunt Capacitances for Any Output Q

    This paper investigates the design curves of the class DE amplifier with the nonlinear shunt capacitances for any output Q and any grading coefficient m of the diode junction in the MOSFET. The design curves are derived by the numerical calculation using Spice. The results of this paper have two important meanings. Firstly, it is clarified that the nonlinearities of the shunt capacitances affect the design curves of the class DE amplifier, especially, for low output Q. Moreover, the supply voltage is a quite important parameter to design the class DE amplifier with the nonlinear shunt capacitances. Secondly, it is also clarified that the numerical design tool using Spice, which is proposed by authors, can be applied to the derivation of the design curves. This shows the possibility of the algorithm to be a powerful tool for the analysis of the class E switching circuits. The waveforms from Spice simulations denote the validity of the design curves.

  • An LMI Approach to Computing Delayed Perturbation Bounds for Stabilizing Receding Horizon H Controls

    This letter presents new delayed perturbation bounds (DPBs) for stabilizing receding horizon H∞ control (RHHC). The linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to determination of DPBs for the RHHC is proposed. We show through a numerical example that the RHHC can guarantee an H∞ norm bound for a larger class of systems with delayed perturbations than conventional infinite horizon H∞ control (IHHC).

    We propose a noise suppression algorithm with the Kalman filter theory. The algorithm aims to achieve robust noise suppression for the additive white and colored disturbance from the canonical state space models with (i) a state equation composed of the speech signal and (ii) an observation equation composed of the speech signal and additive noise. The remarkable features of the proposed algorithm are (1) applied to adaptive white and colored noises where the additive colored noise uses babble noise, (2) realization of high performance noise suppression without sacrificing high quality of the speech signal despite simple noise suppression using only the Kalman filter algorithm, while many conventional methods based on the Kalman filter theory usually perform the noise suppression using the parameter estimation algorithm of AR (auto-regressive) system and the Kalman filter algorithm. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method, which utilizes the Kalman filter theory for the proposed canonical state space model with the colored driving source, using numerical results and subjective evaluation results.

    This letter propose a new H∞ smoother (HIS) with a finite impulse response (FIR) structure for discrete-time state-space models. This smoother is called an H∞ FIR smoother (HIFS). Constraints such as linearity, quasi-deadbeat property, FIR structure, and independence of the initial state information are required in advance. Among smoothers with these requirements, we choose the HIFS to optimize H∞ performance criterion. The HIFS is obtained by solving the linear matrix inequality (LMI) problem with a parametrization of a linear equality constraint. It is shown through simulation that the proposed HIFS is more robust against uncertainties and faster in convergence than the conventional HIS.

    In this paper, we presented a Design-for-Secure-Test (DFST) technique for pipelined AES to guarantee both the security and the test quality during testing. Unlike previous works, the proposed method can keep all the secrets inside and provide high test quality and fault diagnosis ability as well. Furthermore, the proposed DFST technique can significantly reduce test application time, test data volume, and test generation effort as additional benefits.

    In order to achieve the prioritized quality of service (QoS) guarantee, the IEEE 802.11e EDCAF (the enhanced distributed channel access function) provides the distinguished services by configuring the different QoS parameters to different access categories (ACs). An admission control scheme is needed to maximize the utilization of wireless channel. Most of papers study throughput improvement by solving the complicated multidimensional Markov-chain model. In this paper, we introduce a backoff model to study the transmission probability of the different arbitration interframe space number (AIFSN) and the minimum contention window size (CWmin). We propose an adaptive control scheme (ACS) to dynamically update AIFSN and CWmin based on the periodical monitoring of current channel status and QoS requirements to achieve the specific service differentiation at access points (AP). This paper provides an effective tuning mechanism for improving QoS in WLAN. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the basic EDCAF in terms of throughput and service differentiation especially at high collision rate.

    Consider an undirected multigraph G=(V,E) with n vertices and m edges, and let Ni denote the number of connected spanning subgraphs with i(min) edges in G. Recently, we showed in [3] the validity of (m-i+1)Ni-1>Ni for a simple graph and each i(min). Note that, from this inequality, 2 is easily derived. In this paper, for a multigraph G and all i(min), we prove (m-i+1)Ni-1(i-n+2)Ni, and give a necessary and sufficient condition by which (m-i+1)Ni-1=(i-n+2)Ni. In particular, this means that (m-i+1)Ni-1>Ni is not valid for all multigraphs, in general. Furthermore, we prove 2, which is not straightforwardly derived from (m-i+1)Ni-1(i-n+2)Ni, and also introduce a necessary and sufficent condition by which =2. Moreover, we show a sufficient condition for a multigraph to have Nn2>Nn-1Nn+1. As special cases of the sufficient condition, we show that if G contains at least +1 multiple edges between some pair of vertices, or if its underlying simple graph has no cycle with length more than 4, then Nn2>Nn-1Nn+1.

    For formal verification of large-scale digital circuits, a method using satisfiability checking of logic with equality and uninterpreted functions has been proposed. This logic, however, does not consider specific properties of functions or predicates at all, e.g. associative property of addition. In order to ease this problem, we introduce "equivalence constraint" that is a set of formulas representing the properties of functions and predicates, and check the satisfiability of formulas under the constraint. In this report, we show an algorithm for checking satisfiability with equivalence constraint and also experimental results.

    VoIP is one of the key technologies for recent telecommunication services. In addition to the migration from the conventional PSTN to IP networks, mobile networks will follow the PSTN in moving to an IP-based infrastructure. Due to limited radio resources, the speech bitrate in mobile networks must be more strongly compressed than is true in PSTN. This will lead to a heterogeneous network environment, in which different speech codecs are employed in fixed and mobile networks. Therefore, from the viewpoint of designing and managing the QoE (Quality of Experience) of end-to-end telephony services, establishing a method to evaluate the quality of VoIP in such a heterogeneous network environment is very important. The quality of speech communication services should be discussed in subjective terms. Subjective quality assessment is time-consuming and expensive, however, so objective quality assessment which estimates subjective quality without carrying out subjective quality experiments is desirable. To establish an objective method to evaluate the end-to-end quality of speech in a heterogeneous network environment, this paper proposes a method for estimating the end-to-end listening quality based on the quality in each individual segment. This method is very important because conventional technologies such as the E-model, which was standardized as ITU-T Recommendation G.107, cannot accurately estimate overall quality based on segmental qualities. The experimentals show that the proposed method offers better performance in terms of quality estimation than the conventional method.

    This paper presents a study to estimate the composition of an electric load, i.e. to determine the amount of each load class by the direct measurements of the total electric current waveform from instrument reading. Kalman filter algorithm is applied to estimate the electric load composition on a consumer side of a distributed power system. The electric load supplied from the different voltage level by using a non-ideal delta-wye transformer is also studied with consideration of the practical environment for a distributed power system.

  • A Scalable Model of Shielded Capacitors Using Mirror Image Effects

    Comb capacitors suitable for use in advanced complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology nodes are frequently constructed from low metal layers located closely above the conductive silicon substrate. This results in high parasitic capacitances across the thin dielectric between the two layers. Therefore, a shield for reducing this parasitic capacitance is proposed in order to use the comb capacitor at high frequency. From electromagnetic (EM) simulation results using a 3D EM simulator, the quality factor (Q-factor) of the proposed shielded comb capacitor for the differential signal improved by 20% at 30-110 GHz compared to the unshielded capacitor. Consequently, a scalable model is proposed, which operates up to millimeter-wave frequencies. The results are verified by experimental data using fabricated comb capacitors from a 90 nm 1P9M CMOS process. Compared with the experimental results, the simulated common-mode and differential-mode S parameters of the model has a root-mean-square (r.m.s.) error of under 2.1%.

  • Contrast Enhancement in Liquid Crystal Displays by Adaptive Modification of Analog Gamma Reference Voltages

    In this paper, I propose dynamic gamma control (DGC) as a new contrast enhancement technology for liquid crystal displays. Unlike conventional technologies involving the manipulation of digital image data, DGC modifies analog gamma reference voltages in accordance with the image data distribution. A digital gamma buffer (DGB) and a new system architecture were developed for DGC implementation. Experimental results show that DGC can increase the contrast ratio of 5 images twofold on average.

    Quality of service (QoS) control is one of the key technologies for the next-generation network (NGN). In the conventional method, the bearer quality on the carrier network is managed, but the end-to-end QoS for end users needs to be guaranteed. The quality of a public switched telephone network (PSTN) is guaranteed, and the quality of the telephone terminal is also stable. Therefore, end-to-end quality management of PSTN services has been achieved. However, the quality of neither IP networks nor VoIP services is guaranteed in general. In addition, there are numerous VoIP terminals and the differences in their implementations strongly affect the speech quality experienced by end users. Thus, quality management technologies need to be embedded in the VoIP terminal to achieve the equivalent of end-to-end QoS management for the PSTN. These technologies are recommended in IETF RFC3611 "RTCP XR" and ITU-T recommendation P.564 as the framework for end-to-end quality management, but their usage is not shown. Therefore, we propose an end-to-end quality management method for VoIP speech using RTCP XR. We realize an end-to-end QoS monitoring method between the customer and the operator of the carrier network. We define the parameters that should be implemented in RTCP XR packets to estimate the quality of VoIP services based on experimental results.

    Wireless mesh networks are attracting more and more attention as a promising technology for the next generation access infrastructure. QoS support is a unavoidable task given the rising popularity of multimedia applications, and also a challenging task for multi-hop wireless mesh networks. Among the numerous QoS factors, end-to-end delay is one of the most critical and important issues, especially for the real time applications. Over multi-hop wireless mesh networks, end-to-end delay of a flow is highly dependant on the number of hops as well as congestion condition of the hop nodes that the flow traverses through. In this paper, we propose QoS priority control schemes based on the end-to-end QoS delay metrics in order to increase traffic accommodation, i.e., the numbers of real-time flows which satisfy the requirements of end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio over multi-hop wireless mesh networks. The first scheme enables source and forwarding nodes to perform priority control based on the number of hops of routes. The second scheme enables nodes to perform priority control based on the congestion condition of the hop nodes, where the flow traverses through. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes is investigated with NS-2 network simulator for voice and video traffics over multi-hop wireless mesh networks. Simulation results show that the scheme greatly improves the traffic accommodation for voice and video applications in multi-hop wireless mesh networks.

    This paper presents an active quality of service (QoS) aware service composition protocol for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), with the goal of conserving resources subject to QoS requirements. A problem of QoS based service composition in MANETs is transformed into a problem of the service path discovery. We extend Dynamic Source Routing protocol to discover and compose elementary services across the network. Some message processing measures are taken to effectively reduce control overhead. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed protocol.

    This study introduces the fuzzy Lyapunov function to the fuzzy PID control systems, modified fuzzy systems, with an optimized robust tracking performance. We propose a compound search strategy called conditional linear matrix inequality (CLMI) approach which was composed of the proposed improved random optimal algorithm (IROA) concatenated with the simplex method to solve the linear matrix inequality (LMI) problem. If solutions of a specific system exist, the scheme finds more than one solutions at a time, and these fixed potential solutions and variable PID gains are ready for tracking performance optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated by the numerical example of a cart-pole system.

    This paper proposes pilot-based channel quality reporting for orthogonal frequency division multiple access/time division duplex (OFDMA/TDD) systems with cochannel interference. In the proposed method, a terminal reports his channel quality in multiple subbands to base station (BS) using channel reciprocity of TDD systems. The terminal transmits uplink pilot signals in the subbands with different transmit power which is inversely proportional to the subband-based interference power. The BS can obtain knowledge of the terminal's received signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio on subband basis, measuring the pilot signal power. In performance evaluation, accuracy of channel quality reporting and amount of uplink signalling are examined. From numerical results, it is found that the proposed method becomes effective as the number of subbands and terminals for channel quality reporting increases.

    We prove that the Variational distance (and its positive multiples) is the only f-divergence that satisfies both the identity of indiscernibles and the triangle inequality. Therefore it is the unique f-divergence which serves as a metric. This point is interpreted as a fundamental confliction of the convexity for f(x) with the metric properties for its associated f-divergence. Therefore, we relax the convexity of f(x) and replace it with other constraints to create new metrics.

    Assessment of discovered patterns is an important issue in the field of knowledge discovery. This paper presents an evaluation method that utilizes citation (reference) information to assess the quality of discovered document relations. With the concept of transitivity as direct/indirect citations, a series of evaluation criteria is introduced to define the validity of discovered relations. Two kinds of validity, called soft validity and hard validity, are proposed to express the quality of the discovered relations. For the purpose of impartial comparison, the expected validity is statistically estimated based on the generative probability of each relation pattern. The proposed evaluation is investigated using more than 10,000 documents obtained from a research publication database. With frequent itemset mining as a process to discover document relations, the proposed method was shown to be a powerful way to evaluate the relations in four aspects: soft/hard scoring, direct/indirect citation, relative quality over the expected value, and comparison to human judgment.
