This paper proposes a novel configuration for a wideband single-carrier transmitter using a sub-terahertz frequency. For wideband single-carrier transmission over a bandwidth of several gigahertz, the frequency response non-flatness derived from transmitter components in an operating band seriously deteriorates the transmission quality due to inter-symbol interference. A promising approach to address this problem is equalizing the frequency response non-flatness at the transmitter. The proposed novel configuration has a feedback route for calculating the inverse frequency response and multiplying it with a transmission signal spectrum in the frequency domain. Moreover, we verify that employing the proposed transmitter configuration simplifies the receiver configuration by lowering the calculation complexity to minimize the inter-symbol interference to meet the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio requirements. To confirm the feasibility of the proposed configuration, the transmission quality obtained using the proposed configuration is measured and evaluated. Experimental results confirm that the proposed configuration improves the error vector magnitude value to over 5 dB for a 10 Gbaud transmission and the transmission data rate of 25 Gbps.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) allows several users to multiplex in the power-domain to improve spectral efficiency. To further improve its performance, it is desirable to reduce inter-user interference (IUI). In this paper, we propose a downlink asynchronous NOMA (ANOMA) scheme applicable to frequency-selective channels. The proposed scheme introduces an intentional symbol offset between the multiplexed signals to reduce IUI, and it employs cyclic-prefixed single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (FDE) to reduce inter-symbol interference. We show that the mean square error for the FDE of the proposed ANOMA scheme is smaller than that of a conventional NOMA scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed ANOMA with appropriate power allocation achieves a better sum rate compared to the conventional NOMA.

Square-root Nyquist transmit filtering is typically used in single-carrier (SC) transmission. By changing the filter roll-off factor, the bit-error rate (BER), peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), and spectrum efficiency (SE) changes, resulting in a tradeoff among these performance indicators. In this paper, assuming SC with frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE), we design a new transmit filtering based on the minimum variance of instantaneous transmit power (VIP) criterion in order to reduce the PAPR of the transmit signal of SC-FDE. Performance evaluation of SC-FDE using the proposed transmit filtering is done by computer simulation, and shows that the proposed transmit filtering contributes lower transmit PAPR, while there exists only a small degradation in BER performance compared to SC-FDE using square-root Nyquist filtering.

In this paper, a new analog signal transmission technique called analog single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (analog SC-FDE) is proposed. Analog SC-FDE applies discrete Fourier transform (DFT), frequency-domain spectrum shaping and mapping, inverse DFT (IDFT), and cyclic prefix (CP) insertion before transmission. At the receiver, one-tap FDE is applied to take advantage of frequency diversity. This paper considers, as an example, analog voice transmission. A theoretical analysis of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) performance is carried out to evaluate the transmission property of the proposed analog SC-FDE and is confirmed by computer simulation. We show that analog SC-FDE achieves better NMSE performance than conventional analog signal transmission scheme.

In this paper, we propose a joint transmit and receive linear filtering based on minimum mean square error criterion (joint Tx/Rx MMSE filtering) for single-carrier (SC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission. Joint Tx/Rx MMSE filtering transforms the MIMO channel to the orthogonal eigenmodes to avoid the inter-antenna interference (IAI) and performs MMSE based transmit power allocation to sufficiently suppress the inter-symbol interference (ISI) resulting from the severe frequency-selectivity of the channel. Rank adaptation and adaptive modulation are jointly introduced to narrow the gap of received signal-to-interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) among eigenmodes. The superiority of the SC-MIMO transmission with joint Tx/Rx MMSE filtering and joint rank adaptation/adaptive modulation is confirmed by computer simulation.

2-time slot cooperative relay can be used to increase the cell-edge throughput. Adaptive data modulation further improves the throughput. In this paper, we introduce adaptive modulation to single-carrier (SC) cooperative decode-and-forward (DF) relay. The best modulation combination for mobile-terminal (MT)-relay station (RS) and RS-base station (BS) links is determined for the given local average signal-to-noise power ratios (SNRs) of MT-BS, MT-RS and RS-BS links. According to the modulation combination, the ratio of time slot length of the MT-RS link (first time slot) and the RS-BS link (second time slot) is changed. It is shown by computer simulation that the use of adaptive modulation can achieve higher throughput than fixed modulation and reduces by about 9dB the required normalized total transmit SNR for a 10%-outage throughput of 0.8 bps/Hz compared to direct transmission.

In this paper, joint transmit/receive frequency-domain equalization (FDE) is proposed for analog network coded (ANC) single-carrier (SC) bi-directional multi-antenna relay. In the proposed scheme, diversity transmission using transmit FDE is performed at relay station (RS) equipped with multiple antennas while receive FDE is carried out at base station (BS) and mobile terminal (MT) both equipped with single antenna. The transmit and receive FDE weights are jointly optimized so as to minimize the end-to-end mean square error (MSE). We evaluate, by computer simulation, the throughput performance and show that the joint transmit/receive FDE obtains the spatial and frequency diversity gains and accordingly achieve better throughput performance compared to either the transmit FDE only or the receive FDE only. It is also shown that ANC SC bi-directional multi-antenna relay can extend the communication coverage area for the given required throughput compared to conventional direct transmission.

This paper proposes a new channel allocation algorithm for satellite communication systems. The algorithm is based on a spectrum division transmission technique as well as a spectrum compression transmission technique that we have developed in separate pieces of work. Using these techniques, the algorithm optimizes the spectrum bandwidth and a MODCOD (modulation and FEC error coding rate) scheme to balance the usable amount of satellite transponder bandwidth and satellite transmission power. Moreover, it determines the center frequency and bandwidth of each divided subspectra depending on the unused bandwidth of the satellite transponder bandwidth. As a result, the proposed algorithm enables flexible and effective usage of satellite resources (bandwidth and power) in channel allocations and thus enhances satellite communication (SATCOM) system capacity.

This paper proposes a single-carrier transmission method based on an overlap frequency-domain equalizing (FDE) and a coherent averaging. FDE is a block-based equalizing technique using discrete Fourier transform. A cyclic prefix is often used to avoid inter-block interference under multipath channel conditions, which reduces transmission efficiency. An overlap FDE is a technique to avoid the cyclic prefix insertion, but the residual interferences often exist after the FDE processing according to the channel conditions. The method proposed in this paper suppresses the residual interferences by applying a coherent averaging to the FDE outputs and improve the equalization performances. Computer simulation shows the effect of the proposed technique over the multipath channels.

Frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) is considered as a promising equalization technique for a broadband single-carrier (SC) transmission. When a square-root Nyquist filter is used at a transmitter and receiver to limit the signal bandwidth, the presence of timing offset produces the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and degrades the bit error rate (BER) performance using MMSE-FDE. In this paper, we discuss the mechanism of the BER performance degradation in the presence of timing offset. Then, we propose joint MMSE-FDE & spectrum combining which can make use the excess bandwidth introduced by transmit filter to achieve larger frequency diversity gain while suppressing the negative effect of the timing offset.

This paper proposes a frequency domain nulling filter and Turbo equalizer to suppress interference in the uplink of one-cell reuse single-carrier time division multiple access (TDMA) systems. In the proposed system, the desired signal in a reference cell is interfered by interference signals including adjacent-channel interference (ACI), co-channel interference (CCI), and intersymbol interference (ISI). At the transmitter, after a certain amount of spectrum is nulled considering the expected CCI, the suppressed power due to nulling is reallocated to the remaining spectrum components so as to keep the total transmit power constant. In this process, when mitigation of ACI is necessary, after a certain amount of spectrum at both edges is nulled using an edge-removal filter, the aforementioned process is conducted. At the receiver, frequency domain SC/MMSE Turbo equalizer (FDTE) is employed to suppress ISI due to spectrum nulling process in the transmitter as well as the multipath fading. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed scheme is effective in suppression of CCI, ACI and ISI in one-cell reuse single-carrier TDMA systems.

In mobile communications, the channel consists of many resolvable paths with different time delays, resulting in a severely frequency-selective fading channel. The frequency-domain equalization (FDE) can take advantage of the channel selectivity and improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of the single-carrier (SC) transmission. Recently, multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multiplexing is gaining much attention for achieving very high speed data transmissions with the limited bandwidth. Eigenbeam space division multiplexing (E-SDM) is known as one of MIMO multiplexing techniques. In this paper, we propose frequency-domain SC E-SDM for SC transmission. In frequency-domain SC E-SDM, the orthogonal transmission channels to transmit different data in parallel are constructed at each orthogonal frequency. At a receiver, FDE is used to suppress the inter-symbol interference (ISI). In this paper, the transmit power allocation and adaptive modulation based on the equivalent channel gains after performing FDE are applied. The BER performance of the frequency-domain SC E-SDM in a severe frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated by computer simulation.

This paper proposes a co-channel interference (CCI) suppression scheme employing a frequency-domain nulling filter and turbo equalizer for single-carrier uplink time division multiple access (TDMA) systems. In the proposed scheme, after the received signal is transformed into a frequency-domain signal via fast Fourier transform (FFT), CCI from an adjacent cell is suppressed by the nulling filter. Moreover, the proposed scheme employs a soft canceller and minimum mean square error (SC/MMSE) based turbo equalizer to suppress the performance degradation due to inter-symbol interference (ISI) caused by the nulling filter as well as the ISI induced by fading channel. Computer simulation confirms that the proposed scheme is effective in suppression of CCI compared to the conventional linear frequency-domain equalizer.

The joint use of frequency-domain equalization and antenna diversity is presented for single-carrier (SC) transmission in a frequency-selective fading channel. Frequency-domain equalization techniques using minimum mean square error (MMSE), orthogonal restoration combining (ORC) and maximum ratio combining (MRC), those used in multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA), are considered. As antenna diversity techniques, receive diversity and delay transmit diversity (DTD) are considered. Bit error rate (BER) performance achievable with the joint use of frequency-domain equalization and antenna diversity is evaluated by computer simulation.
