  • An Integrated CMOS Front-End Receiver with a Frequency Tripler for V-Band Applications

    A direct-conversion receiver integrated with the CMOS subharmonic frequency tripler (SFT) for V-band applications is designed, fabricated and measured using 0.13-µm CMOS technology. The receiver consists of a low-noise amplifier, a down-conversion mixer, an output buffer, and an SFT. A fully differential SFT is introduced to relax the requirements on the design of the frequency synthesizer. Thus, the operational frequency of the frequency synthesizer in the proposed receiver is only 20 GHz. The fabricated receiver has a maximum conversion gain of 19.4 dB, a minimum single-side band noise figure of 10.2 dB, the input-referred 1-dB compression point of -20 dBm and the input third order inter-modulation intercept point of -8.3 dB. It draws only 15.8 mA from a 1.2-V power supply with a total chip area of 0.794 mm0.794 mm. As a result, it is feasible to apply the proposed receiver in low-power wireless transceiver in the V-band applications.

  • Nonexistence of Symmetric Modes of Subharmonic Oscillations in Three-Phase Circuit--An Approach by Interval Computation

    This paper describes how the symmetry of a three-phase circuit prevents the symmetric modes of several subharmonic oscillations. First, we make mathematically it clear that the generation of symmetrical 1/3l-subharmonic oscillations (l=1,2,) are impossible in the three-phase circuit. As far as 1/(3l+1)-subharmonic oscillations (l=1,2,) and 1/(3l+2)-subharmonic oscillations (l=0,1,) are concerned, the former in negative-phase sequence and the latter in positive-phase sequence are shown to be impossible. Further, in order to confirm the above results, we apply the method of interval analysis to the circuit equations and obtain all steady state solutions with unsymmetric modes.

    A K-band MMIC subharmonically pumped mixer integrating local oscillator (LO) amplifier has been developed. For up-converter application, it is necessary to reduce the leakage of second harmonic component of LO frequency to RF port, which is generated by nonlinear operation of LO amplifier. A quasi-lumped short-circuited stub using microstrip structure has been successfully applied to the MMIC mixer to enhance 2fLO-suppression. We propose a new configuration of a quasi-lumped short-circuited stub, which reduces the influence of parasitic elements of via-holes. The developed MMIC has a one-stage LO amplifier and it has shown about 10 dB-improvement of 2fLO-suppression compared to conventional configuration using a quarter-wavelength short-circuited stub.

  • Bifurcation Phenomena of 1/2-Subharmonic Oscillations in Three-Phase Circuit

    This paper presents the several bifurcation phenomena generated in nonlinear three-phase circuit with symmetry. The circuit consists of delta-connected nonlinear inductors, capacitors and three-phase symmetrical voltage sources. Particular attention is paid to the subharmonic oscillations of order 1/2. We analyze the bifurcations of the oscillations from both theoretical and experimental points. As a tool of analysis, we use the homotopy method. Additionally, by comparing with single-phase and single-phase-like circuits, the special feature of the three-phase circuit is revealed.

  • Bifurcation of the Delay Lock Loop in Spread Spectrum Communication

    It is important to analyze a tracking or synchronizing process in Spread Spectrum (SS) receiving system. The most common SS tracking system considered here consists of pseudorandom (PN) generator, Lowpass Filter (LPE) and Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). The SS receiver is to track or synchronize its local PN generator to the received PN waveform by VCO. The fundamental equation of the system is known by a second order nonlinear differential equation in terms of phase difference between local PN generator and received PN waveform. The differential equation is nonautonoumous due to PN function of time t with period T. Picking up the gain of VCO as the main parameter in the system we show that the system has bifurcation from the normal oscillation through subharmonic oscillation to finally chaos. In the final case, chaos is confirmed by investigating maximum Liapunov number and both stable and unstable manifolds.

  • An 11-GHz-Band Subharmonic-Injection-Locked Oscillator MMIC

    A subharmonic injection-locked oscillator (ILO) MMIC chain is proposed for the local oscillators and synthesizers used at millimeter-wave frequencies. A fabricated, primary 11-GHz-band injection-locked oscillator MMIC for the first stage ILO in the ILO-chain MMIC, achieves a wide subharmonic-injection-locking range at the subharmonic factors, 1/n (n=1, 2, 3, ), of 1/1, 1/2 and 1/3. The ILO MMIC abilities for synthesizer applications were confirmed with an injection-locking time of only 100-200 nsec, which is less than 1/100 that of PLL oscillators, and also with free-running oscillation performance and a wide injection locking range within a temperature range of -30 and 80.
