  • LSI Delivery Management System Using Lot Sampling Scheduling Method for ASIC Production Line

    A novel delivery management system using a new lot sampling scheduling (LSS) method has been developed. The method involves the concepts of "virtual line" and "marker lot," and the system consists of an on-line scheduler executing short-period scheduling for lot-tracking and an off-line scheduler executing long-period scheduling for delivery date simulation. The LSS method can hugely increase the maximum number of lots to simulate the delivery date and also control TAT more effectively compared to conventional dynamic scheduling. Lot progress is controlled by varying the resource allocation ratio for each virtual line. This method is effective for precise delivery date control of lots with various priorities in ASIC production or development lines.

    This paper describes the fabrication of 0.1 µm gate length CMOS devices and analysis of delay time by circuit simulation. In order to reduce the gate resistance, TiN capped cobalt salicide technology is applied to the fabrication of 0.1 µm CMOS devices. Gate sheet resistance with a 0.1 µm gate is as low as 5 Ω/sq. Propagation delay times of 0.1 µm and 0.15 µm CMOS inverter are 21 ps and 36 ps. Simulated propagation delay time agreed fairly well with experimental results. For gate length over 0.15 µm, intrinsic delay in CMOS devices is the main dalay factor. This suggests that increasing current drivability is the most efficient way to improve propagation delay time. At 0.1 µm, each parasitic component and intrinsic delay have similar contributions on device speed due to the short channel effect. To improve delay time, we used rapid thermal annealing or a high dose LDD structure. With this structure, drain current increases by more than 1.3 times and simulation predicted a delay time of 28 ps is possible with 0.15 µm CMOS inverters.

    The performance of the hybrid-ARQ scheme with a convolutional code, in which the retransmission criterion is based on an estimated decoding error rate, is evaluated for moderately time-varying channels. It is shown by computer simulations that the simple average diversity combining scheme can almost attain the same performance as the optimally weighted diversity combining scheme. For the whole and partial retransmission schemes with the average diversity combining, the theoretical bounds of throughput and bit error rate are derived, and it is shown that their bounds are tight and the treated schemes can attain a given error rate with good throughput for moderately time-varying channels. Furthermore, the throughput is shown to be improved by the partial retransmission scheme compared with the whole retransmission scheme.

    The discrete-time short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is known as a useful tool for analyzing and synthesizing signals. This paper introduces an extention of the well-known STFT to a general form which is more suitable for high resolutional signal analysis. A channel frequency division scheme is developed for realizing arbitrary bandwidth and center frequency so as to improve resolution performance. It is based on a nonuniform filter bank structure with integer decimation and interpolation factors. A design example of the generalized STFT using symmetric windows is given.

    We introduce the interval set of a graph G which is a representation of the proper-path-decomposition of G, and show a linear time algorithm to construct an optimal interval set for any tree T. It is shown that a proper-path-decomposition of T with optimal width can be obtained from an optimal interval set of T in O(n log n) time.

    While Electro-Optic (E-O) sampling has achived the electric signal measurement with advantages of noninvasive, noncontact and ultrafast time resolution, it is unsuitable for measuring long logic patterns in fast ICs under the functional test conditions. To overcome this problem, a real time E-O probing using a continuous wave (CW) diode laser and a fast photodetector has been developed. By adopting a ZnTe E-O probe having a half-wave voltage of 3.6 kV, shot noise limited measurement with a frequency bandwidth of 480 MHz has been achieved using a low noise diode laser (wavelength of 780 nm, output power of 30 mW), a pin photodiode, a wideband low noise amplifier, and a digital oscilloscope having 500 MHz bandwidth as a waveform analyzer. The minimum detectable voltage was 23 mV under 700 times integration. In this paper, discussion of the voltage sensitivity of real time E-O probing is included. Key parameters for attaining the highly sensitive real time E-O probing are the sensitivity of the E-O probe and noises of the probing light and detection system.

    Telecommunications management is essentially an aggregation of a wide range of activities, including operations and management (O & M) of telecommunications services and customers as well as the network and network elements. During the period of rapid growth in telecommunications, the highest priority was to meet increasing market demand and to construct a telecommunications network infrastructure. Therefore, research and development in telecommunications management were subordinated to the evolution of telecommunications services and systems. Recently, customers have been demanding higher quality services, as a variety of new, advanced services have been introduced. This has led to the need to integrate telecommunications services and O & M services. This paper first reviews the history of the development of telecommunications O & M in parallel with the progress of telecommunications in Japan and clarifies specific features in each step of this progress. This analysis identifies urgent problems and their solutions. The results suggests that telecommunications O & M and O & M services should be considered as a key to making future services possible and to the value of those services in a multi-media telecommunications services environment. Based on these studies, the future direction of O & M is then shown, focusing on cooperative O & M involving the customer in the multi-media, multidomain telecommunications environment.

    A new approach to implement queues for controlling ATM switch LSI is presented. In many conventional architecture, external FIFOs are provided for each output link and used to manage the address of the buffer in an ATM switch. We reduce the number of FIFOs by using a self-timed queue with a search circuit that finds the earliest entry for each output link. Using this architecture, number of the FIFOs is reduced to 1/N, where N is the switch size. Delay priority and multicasting can be supported without doubling the number of the queues. This new queue can also be utilized as an ATM switch by itself. Evaluation chip was fabricated using 0.5-µm CMOS process technology. Inter-stage transfer speed over 500 MHz and cycle time over 125 MHz was obtained. This performance is enough for a 622-Mbps 1616 ATM Switch.

    A 3.2 GHz, 50 mW, 1 V, GaAs clock pulse generator (CG) based on a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit has been designed for use as an on-chip clock generator in future high speed processor LSIs. 0.5 µm GaAs MESFET and DCFL circuit technologies have been used for the CG, which consists of 224 MESFETs. An "enhanced charge-up current" inverter has been specially designed for a low power and high speed voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). In this new inverter, a voltage controlled dMESFET is combined in parallel with the load dMESFET of a conventional DCFL inverter. This voltage controlled dMESFET produces an additional charge-up current resulting in the new VCO obtaining a much higher oscillation frequency than that of a ring oscillator produced with a conventional inverter. With a single 1 V power supply (Vdd), SPICE calculation results showed that the VCO tuning range was 2.25 GHz to 3.65 GHz and that the average VCO gain was approximately 1.4 GHz/V in the range of a control voltage (Vc) from 0 to 1 V. Simulation also indicated that at a Vdd of 1 V the CG locked on a 50 MHz external clock and generated a 3.2 GHz internal clock (=50 MHz64). The jitter and power dissipation of the CG at 3.2 GHz oscillation and a Vdd of 1 V were less than 8.75 psec and 50 mW, respectively. The typical lock range was 2.90 GHz to 3.59 GHz which corresponded to a pull-in range of 45.3 MHz to 56.2 MHz.

  • A Video Browsing Using Fast Scene Cut Detection for an Efficient Networked Video Database Access

    Video compression technologies such as MPEG have enabled the efficient use of video data in the computer environment. However, the compressed video information still has a huge amount of data compared with the other media such as text, audio, and graphics. Therefore, it is very important to handle the video information in a networked database for the efficient use of resources like storage media. Furthermore, in the networked database, its retrieval methods including search and delivery become the key issues especially for the video information which requires a large network bandwidth. In this paper, a video browsing method using an automatic fast scene cut detection for networked video database access is described. The scene cut is defined as the scene change frame and is detected by temporal change in interframe luminance difference and chrominance correlation which are obtained from spatio-temporally scaled image directly extracted from the MPEG compressed video without any complex processing of video decoding. The detected scene change frames are further investigated to exploit the relationship between the scene cuts and are classified in order to make a hierarchical indexing. These results of detection are stored as an scene index file using the MPEG format. The simulation results are also presented for several test video sequences to show that these methods have enabled the efficient video database construction and accessing.

    When a new digital broadcasting system is introduced for the viewers, it is important to be able to include new services and system aspects. That is to give the viewers new experiences and meet the demands they might have in the future. To fulfil the viewers expectations, is a key for success for the introduction of new service and product. It is equally important to look at the long term perspective and have the possibility to gradually develop the digital broadcasting systems we establish today. A fully integrated multimedia system is a hybrid of different media services, distribution paths and display object. The pros and cons of each of them must be examined and each of them used where best suited. This will probably give a more complex media world with fuzzy borders between what is broadcasting, packaged media and what is the on-line information society. In order to balance this, any new digital multimedia system needs to be developed with an open architecture, based on generally agreed standards and possibly follow a non-proprietary approach. IDUN, a prototype system for multimedia broadcasting, is on its way to fulfil these requirements. IDUN combines the powerful point to multi-point emission, domestic data storage and computer processing with the telecommunication network. It is feasible to introduce it in the analogue world of today but could better be utilised in a fully digital future. Some possible services are further proposed. Some of them with a tight relation to what a broadcaster already produces, which could give an evolutionary transfer to the new digital world.

    In this paper, chaos synchronization in coupled discrete-time dynamical systems is studied. Computer results display the interesting synchronization behaviors in the mutually coupled systems. As possible applications of chaos synchronization, parameter estimations and secure communications are proposed. Furthermore, a modified OGY method is given, which converts a chaotic motion into a periodic motion.

  • Towards Flexible Communications Management for Multimedia Multipoint Communications

    Customers' requirements for telecommunications services have been changing from simple point-to-point and single-medium communications to multiple-point and multiple-media, as well as changes in bandwidth requirements. In addition, customers' end stations (ES) will not be homogeneous, from POTS-like terminal to sophisticated multimedia workstation that handles various kind of media. This paper discusses communications management architectures that provide multimedia multipoint communications in a heterogeneous ESs environment. It summarizes existing communications management architectures, and discusses advanced architectures that provide multimedia communications, multipoint communications and heterogeneity handling capabilities in a flexible and efficient manner. The objectives of this architecture are to integrate multimedia multipoint communications capabilities into the network, and provide customers with versatile communications service request interface which can handle from plain single-medium point-to-point communications to multimedia multipoint communications. This paper especially focuses on the management functionalities for multimedia multipoint service fabrics (MMSF) which may be owned by the network provider, the third-party service provider, or the customer. It discusses variations of MMSF management protocol implementations in the case that the MMSF is owned by either of the three. It also discusses implementation of customers' various operations requests to the MMSF in the communication phase.

    A new simple formulation of absorbing boundary conditions with higher order approximation is proposed for the solution of Maxwell's equations with the finite-difference time-domain (FD-TD) method. Although this higher order approximation is based on the third order approximation of the one-way wave equations, we have succeeded in reducing it to an equation in a form quite similar to the second order appoximation. Numerical tests exhibit smaller reflection errors than the prevalent second order approximation.

    Numerical simulations for the (3+1)-dimensional optical-field dynamics of nonstationary pulsed beams that propagate down Kerr-like nonlinear channel waveguides are carried out for what is to our knowledge the first time. Time-resolved intrapulse switching due to spontaneous symmetry breaking of optical fields from a quasilinear symmetric field to a nonlinear asymmetric field is analyzed. A novel instability phenomenon triggered by the symmetry breakdown is found.

  • Evaluating the Performance of Virtual Path Bandwidth Control in ATM Networks

    The new algorithm for VP bandwidth control described and analyzed in this paper is a revised version of the Successive Modification Method. Its operation is based only on call-level performance (call blocking probabilities) measured in real time, without explicitly taking the cell-level performance into account. This algorithm does not need to predict future traffic demand and to perform network-wide optimization according to the predicted traffic. These features are well suited for a B-ISDN environment, with the variety of ATM bearer services and the uncertainty of their traffic demand and other characteristics. This paper describes the relationship between the proposed control and other traffic controls in ATM networks, such as CAC and VP shaping/policing. It also offers a solution to the problem of the competition that arises when several VPs in the same transmission path need increased bandwidth. Evaluation of the transient behavior of the VP bandwidth occupied by VCs shows that there is a lower limit in the control cycle and that this limit can be estimated as the longest average holding time of VCs among all services. Numerical results obtained using a call-by-call simulator show that proposed control is effective in preventing the performance degradation caused by a large traffic imbalance in communications networks. Comparison of the proposed control with a dynamical alternate routing for VC reveals that the VP bandwidth control is effective in relieving only the areas showing serious performance degradation, but that it is not so effective in improving the overall network performance.

    Many methods, based on the concept of key-lock-pair have been proposed for access control in computer protection systems. However, the proposed methods still either lack of dynamic ability or need quite a lot of computation in performing requests of deleting users/files, inserting users/files, or updating access rights of users to files. In this paper we propose a two-key-lock-pair access control method that is based on the unique factorization theorem and a time stamp mechanism. Our method is dynamic and needs a minimum amount of computation in the sense that it only updates at most one key/lock for each access request, which has not been achieved before.

  • A Study on Pre-Embossed Rigid Magnetic Disk

    A new positioning method for higher track density hard disk using embossed-servo-mark magnetic disks is proposed. An embossed-servo-mark medium with grooved-guard-band data tracks for 208 TPMM was developed using molded plastic substrate. The marks were magnetized so that conventional magnetic head can reproduce position signals. Simple analogy from optical disk track following to magnetic disk track following was taken and examined. A DSP controlled feed-forward servo was introduced to resolve the inherent eccentricity caused by mounting preformed tracks onto an independent spindle axis. The prototype drives with a form factor of 2.5 inches were designed introducing the disks, the servo scheme and the newly developed orthogonal MR head. As a result, an areal density of 650 kbits/mm2 (about 420 Mbits/in2) recording was successfully demonstrated on the media using 2.5-inch form factor prototype drives.
