Action recognition using skeleton data (3D coordinates of human joints) is an attractive topic due to its robustness to the actor's appearance, camera's viewpoint, illumination, and other environmental conditions. However, skeleton data must be measured by a depth sensor or extracted from video data using an estimation algorithm, and doing so risks extraction errors and noise. In this work, for robust skeleton-based action recognition, we propose a deep state-space model (DSSM). The DSSM is a deep generative model of the underlying dynamics of an observable sequence. We applied the proposed DSSM to skeleton data, and the results demonstrate that it improves the classification performance of a baseline method. Moreover, we confirm that feature extraction with the proposed DSSM renders subsequent classifications robust to noise and missing values. In such experimental settings, the proposed DSSM outperforms a state-of-the-art method.

Rapid development of modern communications has initiated essential requirements for providing efficient algorithms that can solve the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in satellite optical networks. In this paper, the bee colony algorithm optimization based on link cost for RWA (BCO-LCRWA) is tailored for satellite networks composed of intersatellite laser links. In BCO-LCRWA, a cost model of intersatellite laser links is established based on metrics of network transmission performance namely delay and wavelengths utilization, with constraints of Doppler wavelength drift, transmission delay, wavelength consistency and continuity. Specifically, the fitness function of bee colony exploited in the proposed algorithm takes wavelength resources utilization and communication hops into account to implement effective utilization of wavelengths, to avoid unnecessary over-detouring and ensure bit error rate (BER) performance of the system. The simulation results corroborate the improved performance of the proposed algorithm compared with the existing alternatives.

A method for estimating circuit performance variation caused by packaging-induced mechanical stress is proposed. The developed method is based on the stress distribution chart for the target integrated circuit (IC) and the stress sensitivity characteristics of individual devices. This information is experimentally obtained using a specially designed test chip and a cantilever bending calibration system. A post-packaging analysis and simulation tool, called Stress Netlist Generator (SNG), is developed for conducting the proposed method. Based on the stress distribution chart and the stress sensitivity characteristics, SNG modifies the SPICE model parameters in the target netlist according to the impact of the packaging-induced stress. The netlist generated by SNG is used to estimate packaging-induced performance variation with high accuracy. The developed method is remarkably effective even for small-scale ICs with chip sizes of roughly 1 mm2, such as power management ICs, which require higher precision.

Metric learning aims to generate similarity-preserved low dimensional feature vectors from input images. Most existing supervised deep metric learning methods usually define a carefully-designed loss function to make a constraint on relative position between samples in projected lower dimensional space. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture called Naive Similarity Discriminator (NSD) to learn the distribution of easy samples and predict their probability of being similar. Our purpose lies on encouraging generator network to generate vectors in fitting positions whose similarity can be distinguished by our discriminator. Adequate comparison experiments was performed to demonstrate the ability of our proposed model on retrieval and clustering tasks, with precision within specific radius, normalized mutual information and F1 score as evaluation metrics.

In partial label data, the ground-truth label of a training example is concealed in a set of candidate labels associated with the instance. As the ground-truth label is inaccessible, it is difficult to train the classifier via the label information. Consequently, manifold structure information is adopted, which is under the assumption that neighbor/similar instances in the feature space have similar labels in the label space. However, the real-world data may not fully satisfy this assumption. In this paper, a partial label metric learning method based on likelihood-ratio test is proposed to make partial label data satisfy the manifold assumption. Moreover, the proposed method needs no objective function and treats the data pairs asymmetrically. The experimental results on several real-world PLL datasets indicate that the proposed method outperforms the existing partial label metric learning methods in terms of classification accuracy and disambiguation accuracy while costs less time.

A unified decision scheme for the classification and localization of cable faults is proposed based on a two-step procedure. Having basis in the time domain reflectometry (TDR), the proposed scheme is capable of determining not only the locations but also types of faults in a cable without an excessive additional computational burden compared to other TDR-based schemes. Results from simulation and experiments with measured real data demonstrate that the proposed scheme exhibits a higher rate of correct decision than the conventional schemes in localizing and classifying faults over a wide range of the location of faults.

Simultaneous multithreading (SMT) technology improves CPU throughput, but also causes unpredictable performance fluctuations for co-running workloads. Although recent major SMT processors have adopted some techniques to promote hardware support for quality-of-service (QoS), achieving both precise performance guarantees and high throughput on SMT architectures is still a challenging open problem. In this paper, we demonstrate through some comprehensive investigations on a cycle-accurate simulator that not only almost all in-core resources suffer from severe contention as workloads vary but also there is a non-linear relationship between performance and available quotas of resources. We consider these observations as the fundamental reason leading to the challenging problem above. Thus, we introduce QoSMT, a novel hardware scheme that leverages a closed-loop controlling mechanism consisting of detection, prediction and adjustment to enforce precise performance guarantees for specific targets, e.g. achieving 85%, 90% or 95% of the performance of a workload running alone respectively. We implement a prototype on GEM5 simulator. Experimental results show that the average control error is only 1.4%, 0.5% and 3.6%.

This paper proposes two variants of improved Compression by Substring Enumeration (CSE) with a finite alphabet. In previous studies on CSE, an encoder utilizes inequalities which evaluate the number of occurrences of a substring or a minimal forbidden word (MFW) to be encoded. The inequalities are derived from a contingency table including the number of occurrences of a substring or an MFW. Moreover, codeword length of a substring and an MFW grows with the difference between the upper and lower bounds deduced from the inequalities, however the lower bound is not tight. Therefore, we derive a new tight lower bound based on the contingency table and consequently propose a new CSE algorithm using the new inequality. We also propose a new encoding order of substrings and MFWs based on a sorted contingency table such that both its row and column marginal total are sorted in descending order instead of a lexicographical order used in previous studies. We then propose a new CSE algorithm which is the first proposed CSE algorithm using the new encoding order. Experimental results show that compression ratios of all files of the Calgary corpus in the proposed algorithms are better than those of a previous study on CSE with a finite alphabet. Moreover, compression ratios under the second proposed CSE get better than or equal to that under a well-known compressor for 11 files amongst 14 files in the corpus.

In this letter, an efficient hybrid direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation scheme is devised for massive uniform rectangular array. In this scheme, the DOA estimator based on a two-dimensional (2D) discrete Fourier transform is first applied to acquire coarse initial DOA estimates for single data snapshot. Then, the fine DOA is accurately estimated through using the iterative search estimator within a very small region. Meanwhile, a Nyström-based method is utilized to correctly compute the required noise-subspace projection matrix, avoiding the direct computation of full-dimensional sample correlation matrix and its eigenvalue decomposition. Therefore, the proposed scheme not only can estimate DOA, but also save computational cost, especially in massive antenna arrays scenarios. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid estimate scheme.

In the upcoming video coding standard VVC (Versatile Video Coding, H.266), a new coding block structure named quadtree nested multi-type trees (MTT) has been proposed. Compared with the quadtree structure defined in HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), the partition structure of MTT can achieve better coding performance. Since the splitting scheme of a CU (Coding Unit) need to be calculated recursively, the computational complexity is significantly increased. To reduce computational complexity as well as maintain compression performance, a fast multi-type tree decision algorithm is proposed. The application of binary and ternary tree in horizontal or vertical direction is found to be closely related to the characteristics of CU in this paper, and a metric named pixel difference of sub-blocks (SBPD) is defined to measure the characteristics of CU in different splitting type. By comparing the SBPD in horizontal and vertical sub-blocks, the selection of binary and ternary tree can be decided in advance, so as to skip some redundant splitting modes. Experimental results show that compared with the original reference software VTM 4.0, the average time saving of the proposed algorithm is 27% and the BD-rate is only increased by 0.55%.

Homotopy algorithm provides a very powerful approach to select the best regularization term for the l1-norm minimization problem, but it is lack of provision for handling singularities. The singularity problem might be frequently encountered in practical implementations if the measurement matrix contains duplicate columns, approximate columns or columns with linear dependent in kernel space. The existing method for handling Homotopy singularities introduces a high-dimensional random ridge term into the measurement matrix, which has at least two shortcomings: 1) it is very difficult to choose a proper ridge term that applies to several different measurement matrices; and 2) the high-dimensional ridge term may accumulatively degrade the recovery performance for large-scale applications. To get around these shortcomings, a modified ridge-adding method is proposed to deal with the singularity problem, which introduces a low-dimensional random ridge vector into the l1-norm minimization problem directly. Our method provides a much simpler implementation, and it can alleviate the degradation caused by the ridge term because the dimension of ridge term in the proposed method is much smaller than the original one. Moreover, the proposed method can be further extended to handle the SVMpath initialization singularities. Theoretical analysis and experimental results validate the performance of the proposed method.

In this paper, the influence of high-temperature sputtering on the nitrogen-doped (N-doped) LaB6 thin film formation utilizing RF sputtering was investigated. The N-doped LaB6/SiO2/p-Si(100) MOS diode and N-doped LaB6/p-Si(100) of Schottky diode were fabricated. A 30 nm thick N-doped LaB6 thin film was deposited from room temperature (RT) to 150°C. It was found that the resistivity was decreased from 1.5 mΩcm to 0.8 mΩcm by increasing deposition temperature from RT to 150°C. The variation of work function was significantly decreased in case that N-doped LaB6 thin film deposited at 150°C. Furthermore, Schottky characteristic was observed by increasing deposition temperature to 150°C. In addition, the crystallinity of N-doped LaB6 thin film was improved by increasing deposition temperature.

Goal modeling is a method that describes requirements structurally. Goal modeling mainly consists of two tasks: extraction of goals and organization of the extracted goals. Generally, the process of the goal modeling requires intensive manual intervention and higher modeling skills than the process of the usual requirements description. In order to mitigate this problem, we propose a method that provides systematic supports for constructing goal models. In the method, the requirement analyst answers questions and a goal model is semi-automatically constructed based on the answers made. We develop a prototype tool that implements the proposed method and apply it to two systems. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the method.
