  • Distributed Multi-Cell Resource Allocation with Price Based ICI Coordination in Downlink OFDMA Networks

    Multi-cell resource allocation under minimum rate request for each user in OFDMA networks is addressed in this paper. Based on Lagrange dual decomposition theory, the joint multi-cell resource allocation problem is decomposed and modeled as a limited-cooperative game, and a distributed multi-cell resource allocation algorithm is thus proposed. Analysis and simulation results show that, compared with non-cooperative iterative water-filling algorithm, the proposed algorithm can remarkably reduce the ICI level and improve overall system performances.

    ICI (Inter-Cell Interference) mitigation schemes at the cell border are frequently dealt with as a special issue in 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution). However, few papers have analyzed the outage performance for the ICI mitigation schemes. In this paper, we propose a generalized cell planning scheme termed QBPA (Quality of Service based Band Power Allocation). Utilizing the QBPA scheme, we measure how much increase in channel capacity can be obtained through the flexible control of bandwidth and power in multi-cell forward-link environments. In addition, the feasible performance of the conventional schemes can be evaluated as long as those schemes are specific forms of the QBPA.

    We investigate connected proper interval graphs without vertex labels. We first give the number of connected proper interval graphs of n vertices. Using this result, a simple algorithm that generates a connected proper interval graph uniformly at random up to isomorphism is presented. Finally an enumeration algorithm of connected proper interval graphs is proposed. The algorithm is based on reverse search, and it outputs each connected proper interval graph in (O)1 time.

    In this paper, a resonator based on composite right/left handed transmission line concept is discussed. This resonator excites --1st order resonance mode. We start with half-wave resonators consisting of two unit cells of a composite right/left handed transmission line. From the simulated field distributions, the center of these half-wave resonators can be short-circuited to obtain a quarter-wave resonator in the --1st mode. Susceptance slope parameters are calculated for the resonator. Then this resonator is applied for a 2-pole filter made by LTCC, which can be designed with standard filter design theory owing to the slope parameter. The dimension of the experimental filter implemented by LTCC is 2.5 mm by 1.35 mm by 0.52 mm. The insertion loss is 1.80 dB at the 2.4 GHz band. Good agreement between measured and computed results is obtained.

    This paper aims at analyzing the performance of an anonymous communication system 3-Mode Net with respect to the number of relay nodes required for communication and sender anonymity. As for the number of relay nodes, we give explicit formulas of the probability distribution, the expectation, and the variance. Considering sender anonymity, we quantify the degree of sender anonymity under a situation where some relay nodes collude with each other. The above analyses use random walk theory, a probability generating function, and their properties. From obtained formulas, we show several conditions for avoiding a situation where the number of relay nodes becomes large, and for providing high sender anonymity. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between the number of relay nodes and sender anonymity, and give a condition for providing a better performance of 3 MN.

    We propose a randomness test based on the T-complexity of a sequence, which can be calculated using a parsing algorithm called T-decomposition. Recently, the Lempel-Ziv (LZ) randomness test based on LZ-complexity using the LZ78 incremental parsing was officially excluded from the NIST test suite in NIST SP 800-22. This is caused from the problem that the distribution of P-values for random sequences of length 106 is strictly discrete for the LZ-complexity. Our proposed test can overcome this problem because T-complexity has almost ideal continuous distribution of P-values for random sequences of length 106. We also devise a new sequential T-decomposition algorithm using forward parsing, while the original T-decomposition is an off-line algorithm using backward parsing. Our proposed test can become a supplement to NIST SP 800-22 because it can detect several undesirable pseudo-random numbers that the NIST test suite almost fails to detect.

  • Achieving Global Optimal Replication in Distributed Networks

    This letter presents the globally optimal data replication in the distributed networks. We propose a distributed approach based on the metropolis-hastings algorithm to achieve the globally optimal data replication without requiring any global information. Experimental results show that the proposed approach works well and the error can be held below 0.6% easily.

    Integer codes are very flexible and can be applied in different modulation schemes. A soft decoding algorithm for integer codes will be introduced. Comparison of symbol error probability (SEP) versus signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between soft and hard decoding using integer coded modulation shows us that we can obtain at least 2 dB coding gain. Also, we shall compare our results with trellis coded modulation (TCM) because of their similar decoding schemes and complexity.

  • An EM Absorber and Frequency Selective Shielding by Use of Metal Fiber Array Composites

    The construction of EM absorber and frequency selective shielding has been investigated by using two dimensional metal fiber array (MFA) composites. The MFA composite shows a resonant type frequency dispersion in the complex relative permittivity spectra (εr = εr' - jεr") having a negative εr' region. The frequency characteristics of the conventional ferrite-rubber EM absorber can be improved by combining with the negative permittivity property of the MFA composite. A frequency selective shielding can be achieved by the evanescent EM wave propagation in the layered MFA composite structure.

    The present paper focuses on the application of the base station cooperation (BSC) technique in fractional frequency reuse (FFR) networks. Fractional frequency reuse is considered to be a promising scheme for avoiding the inter-cell interference problem in OFDMA cellular systems, such as WiMAX, in which the edge mobile stations (MSs) of adjacent cells use different subchannels for separate transmission. However, the problem of FFR is that the cell edge spectral efficiency (SE) is much lower than that of the cell center. The BSC technique, in which adjacent BSs perform cooperative transmission for one cell edge MS with the same channel, may improve the cell edge SE. However, since more BSs transmit signals for one cell edge MS, the use of BSC can also increase the inter-cell interference, which might degrade the network performance. In this paper, with a focus on this tradeoff, we propose an adaptive BSC scheme in which BSC is only performed for the cell edge MSs that can achieve a significant capacity increase with only a slight increase in inter-cell interference. Moreover, a channel reallocation scheme is proposed in order to further improve the performance of the adaptive BSC scheme. The simulation results reveal that, compared to the conventional FFR scheme, the proposed schemes are effective for improving the performance of FFR networks.

  • A New Region-Based Active Contour Model with Skewness Wavelet Energy for Segmentation of SAR Images

    A new method of segmentation for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images using the skewness wavelet energy has been presented. The skewness is the third order cumulant which measures the local texture along the region-based active contour. Nonlinearity in intensity inhomogeneities often occur in SAR images due to the speckle noise. In this paper we propose a region-based active contour model that is able to use the intensity information in local regions and to cope with the speckle noise and nonlinear intensity inhomogeneity of SAR images. We use a wavelet coefficients energy distribution to analyze the SAR image texture in each sub-band. A fitting energy called skewness wavelet energy is defined in terms of a contour and a functional so that, the regions and their interfaces will be modeled by level set functions. A functional relationship has been calculated on these level sets in terms of the third order cumulant, from which an energy minimization is derived. Minimizing the calculated functions derives the optimal segmentation based on the texture definitions. The results of the implemented algorithm on the test images from the Radarsat SAR images of agricultural and urban regions show a desirable performance of the proposed method.

    In this letter, a derivative constraint minimum output energy (MOE) receiver is proposed the offers enhanced robustness against carrier frequency offset (CFO). A theoretical analysis of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is presented to confirm its efficacy. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed receiver basically offers the same performance as an optimal receiver with no CFO present.

  • Image Quality Analysis of a Novel Histogram Equalization Method for Image Contrast Enhancement

    The use of image contrast enhancement has become increasingly essential due to the need to better show the visual information contained within the image for all vision-based systems. This has lead to motivation for the design of a powerful and accurate automatic contrast enhancement for a digital image. Histogram equalization is the most commonly used contrast enhancement method. However, the conventional histogram equalization methods usually result in excessive contrast enhancement, which causes the unnatural look and visual artifacts of the processed image. In this paper, we propose a novel histogram equalization method using the automatic histogram separation along with the piecewise transformed function. The contrast enhancement results of the proposed method were not only analyzed through qualitative visual inspection and for quantitative accuracy, but are also compared to the results of other state-of-the-art methods.

    We propose a novel technique of matching at both ends of the guard trace to suppress resonance. This approach is derived from the viewpoint that the guard trace acts as a transmission line. We examined that matched termination suppresses guard-trace resonance through simulating a circuit and measuring radiation. We found from these results that the proposed method enables guard-trace voltages to remain low and hence avoids increases in radiation. In addition, we demonstrated that "matched termination at the far end of the guard trace" could suppress guard-trace resonance sufficiently at all frequencies. We eventually found that at least two vias at both ends of the guard trace and only one matching resistor at the far end could suppress guard-trace resonance. With respect to fewer vias, the method we propose has the advantage of reducing restrictions in the printed circuit board layout at the design stage.

  • Reduction of Averaging Time for Evaluation of Human Exposure to Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Fields from Cellular Base Stations

    In order to determine exposure compliance with the electromagnetic fields from a base station's antenna in the far-field region, we should calculate the spatially averaged field value in a defined space. This value is calculated based on the measured value obtained at several points within the restricted space. According to the ICNIRP guidelines, at each point in the space, the reference levels are averaged over any 6 min (from 100 kHz to 10 GHz) for the general public. Therefore, the more points we use, the longer the measurement time becomes. For practical application, it is very advantageous to spend less time for measurement. In this paper, we analyzed the difference of average values between 6 min and lesser periods and compared it with the standard uncertainty for measurement drift. Based on the standard deviation from the 6 min averaging value, the proposed minimum averaging time is 1 min.

    Error-propagation is an important issue and should be carefully coped with in the decision-feedback equalizers (DFE). Ignoring the impact of error-propagation often leads to impractical laboratory results. In this paper, we investigate two novel layered space-frequency equalizers (LSFE) for single-carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the recently proposed frequency-domain equalizer with time domain noise-predictor (FDE-NP) is adopted at each stage of the LSFE. We first derive the partially-connected LSFE with noise predictor (PC-LSFE-NP) which has exactly the same mean square error (MSE) as the conventional LSFE under the assumption of perfect feedback. However, if error-propagation is considered, the proposed PC-LSFE-NP can achieve better performance than the conventional LSFE due to the more reliable feedback output by the decoders. To reduce the interference from the not yet detected layers in the feedback section, we then introduce the fully-connected LSFE with noise predictor (FC-LSFE-NP), in which all layers are implicitly equalized within each stage and their decisions fed back internally. The powerful feedback filter of FC-LSFE-NP brings significant performance superiority over the conventional LSFE and PC-LSFE-NP with either perfect or imperfect feedback. Moreover, we propose a simple soft-demapper for the equalizers to avoid information loss during decoding, and thus, further improve the performance. Finally, we compare the performance of (PC/FC)-LSFE-NP with the existing schemes by computer simulations.

    An inter-modulation distortion (IMD) compensation method for thermal memory effect using a multistage RC-ladder circuit has been proposed. The IMD caused by the thermal memory effect on an InGaP/GaAs HBT amplifier was compensated for by inserting a multistage RC-ladder circuit in the base bias circuit of the amplifier. Since heat flux owing to self-heating in the transistor can be approximated with a multistage thermal RC-ladder circuit, the canceling of IMD by an additional electrical memory effect generated from the RC-ladder circuit is predicted. The memory effects cause asymmetrical characteristics between upper and lower IMD. The IMD caused by the memory effects is expressed as a vector sum of each origin. By adjusting an electrical reactance characteristic for sub-harmonics affected by the thermal memory effect in the amplifier circuit, the asymmetric characteristic is symmetrized. The parameters of the RC-ladder circuit were estimated so that the adjusted electrical reactance characteristic is reproduced in simulation. A fabricated InGaP/GaAs HBT amplifier with the thermal memory effect compensation circuit exhibited a symmetrized and suppressed IMD characteristics.

  • Evaluation of Uncertainties in Electromagnetic Disturbance Measurement above 1 GHz due to Site Imperfections

    The data dispersion of the measurement of electromagnetic disturbance above 1 GHz is mainly affected by site imperfections (expressed by the site voltage standing wave ratio (SVSWR)). To confirm the relationship between site imperfections and the measured field strength, we measured the SVSWR and the field strength radiated from the equipment under test (EUT) by changing the area covered by the RF absorber on the metal ground plane. From the results, we found that the data dispersion of measured field strength can be estimated from the measured SVSWR, and therefore, we can determine the measurement uncertainty of the measured field strength at the test site.

    We propose an improved reference speaker weighting (RSW) and speaker cluster weighting (SCW) approach that uses an aspect model. The concept of the approach is that the adapted model is a linear combination of a few latent reference models obtained from a set of reference speakers. The aspect model has specific latent-space characteristics that differ from orthogonal basis vectors of eigenvoice. The aspect model is a "mixture-of-mixture" model. We first calculate a small number of latent reference models as mixtures of distributions of the reference speaker's models, and then the latent reference models are mixed to obtain the adapted distribution. The mixture weights are calculated based on the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. We use the obtained mixture weights for interpolating mean parameters of the distributions. Both training and adaptation are performed based on likelihood maximization with respect to the training and adaptation data, respectively. We conduct a continuous speech recognition experiment using a Korean database (KAIST-TRADE). The results are compared to those of a conventional MAP, MLLR, RSW, eigenvoice and SCW. Absolute word accuracy improvement of 2.06 point was achieved using the proposed method, even though we use only 0.3 s of adaptation data.

  • Effect of PLC Signal Induced into VDSL System by Conductive Coupling

    We investigated the effect of a high-speed power line communication (PLC) signal induced into a very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) system by conductive coupling based on a network model. Four electronic devices with AC mains and telecommunication ports were modeled using a 4-port network, and the parameters of the network were obtained from measuring impedance and transmission loss. We evaluated the decoupling factor from the mains port to the telecommunication port of a VDSL modem using these parameters for the four electric and electronic devices. The results indicate that the mean value of the decoupling factor for the differential and common mode signals were more than 88 and 62 dB, respectively, in the frequency range of a PLC system. Taking the following parameters into consideration; decoupling factor Ld, the average transmission signal powers of VDSL and PLC, desired and undesired (DU) ratio, and transmission loss of a typical 300-m-long indoor telecommunication line, the VDSL system cannot be disturbed by the PLC signal induced into the VDSL modem from the AC mains port in normal installation.
