    Various types of optical connector with a precise alignment mechanism and long-term reliability have been researched, developed and improved during about 30 years since practical optical communication systems were first introduced in Japan in 1981. The main issues related to optical fiber connector development changed from performance improvement to miniaturization, cost reduction and ease of field assembly when optical communication systems expanded from optical trunk networks to optical access networks. Various different key technologies for optical connectors have been developed to meet these requirements, and a large number of optical connectors are currently being used for the flexible and efficient construction, maintenance and operation of optical access networks. This paper describes the structure, features, and basic technologies of the optical connectors employed in optical access networks in Japan and their standardization and future prospects.

  • Privacy-Preserving Authentication of Users with Smart Cards Using One-Time Credentials

    User privacy preservation is critical to prevent many sophisticated attacks that are based on the user's server access patterns and ID-related information. We propose a password-based user authentication scheme that provides strong privacy protection using one-time credentials. It eliminates the possibility of tracing a user's authentication history and hides the user's ID and password even from servers. In addition, it is resistant against user impersonation even if both a server's verification database and a user's smart card storage are disclosed. We also provide a revocation scheme for a user to promptly invalidate the user's credentials on a server when the user's smart card is compromised. The schemes use lightweight operations only such as computing hashes and bitwise XORs.

    In this paper, we studied the use of common-mode noise reduction technique for in-vehicle electronic equipment in an actual instrument design. We have improved the circuit model of the common-mode noise that flows to the wire harness to add the effect of a bypass capacitor located near the LSI. We analyzed the improved circuit model using a circuit simulator and verified the effectiveness of the noise reduction condition derived from the circuit model. It was also confirmed that offsetting the impedance mismatch in the PCB section requires to make a circuit constant larger than that necessary for doing the impedance mismatch in the LSI section. An evaluation circuit board comprising an automotive microcomputer was prototyped to experiment on the common-mode noise reduction effect of the board. The experimental results showed the noise reduction effect of the board. The experimental results also revealed that the degree of impedance mismatch in the LSI section can be estimated by using a PCB having a known impedance. We further inquired into the optimization of impedance parameters, which is difficult for actual products at present. To satisfy the noise reduction condition composed of numerous parameters, we proposed a design method using an optimization algorithm and an electromagnetic field simulator, and confirmed its effectiveness.

  • Estimation of Potential Gradient from Discharge Current through Hand-Held Metal Piece from Charged Human Body

    Electrostatic discharge (ESD) events due to metal objects electrified with low voltages give a fatal electromagnetic interference to high-tech information equipment. In order to elucidate the mechanism, with a 6-GHz digital oscilloscope, we previously measured the discharge current due to collision of a hand-held metal piece from a charged human body, and gave a current calculation model. In this study, based on the calculation model, a method was presented for deriving a gap potential gradient from the measured discharge current. Measurements of the discharge currents were made for charge voltages from 200 V to 1000 V. The corresponding potential gradients were estimated, which were validated in comparison with an empirical formula based on the Paschen's law together with other researcher's experimental results.

    In this paper, multiconductor transmission line (MTL) modelling is used to characterize the frequency response and dispersion of the low-voltage outdoor powerline channel. The analysis focuses on a single transmitter-to-receiver link and all the possible connection schemes associated with that link. By resorting to modal analysis, approximate analytical upper bounds of the channel frequency-response are derived for simplified but representative network configurations involving power cables with star-quad cross-section. Numerical solution of the MTL equations is used to validate the theoretical work and to show the dispersion of the channel frequency-responses, which results to be of the order of 20 dB.

    This paper presents an automatic system for detecting and re-identifying people moving in different sites with non-overlapping views. We first propose an automatic process for silhouette extraction based on the combination of an adaptive background subtraction algorithm and a motion detection module. Such a combination takes advantage of both approaches and is able to tackle the problem of particular environments. The silhouette extraction results are then clustered based on their spatial belonging and colorimetric characteristics in order to preserve only the key regions that effectively represent the appearance of a person. The next important step consists in characterizing the extracted silhouettes by the appearance-based signatures. Our proposed descriptor, which includes both color and spatial feature of objects, leads to satisfying results compared to other descriptors in the literature. Since the passage of a person needs to be characterized by multiple frames, a large quantity of data has to be processed. Thus, a graph-based algorithm is used to realize the comparison of passages of people in front of cameras and to make the final decision of re-identification. The global system is tested on two real and difficult data sets recorded in very different environments. The experimental results show that our proposed system leads to very satisfactory results.

    This paper discusses the issues involved in the design of a complete information retrieval system for DataSpace based on user relevance probabilistic schemes. First, Information Hidden Model (IHM) is constructed taking into account the users' perception of similarity between documents. The system accumulates feedback from the users and employs it to construct user oriented clusters. IHM allows integrating uncertainty over multiple, interdependent classifications and collectively determines the most likely global assignment. Second, Three different learning strategies are proposed, namely query-related UHH, UHB and UHS (User Hidden Habit, User Hidden Background, and User Hidden keyword Semantics) to closely represent the user mind. Finally, the probability ranking principle shows that optimum retrieval quality can be achieved under certain assumptions. An optimization algorithm to improve the effectiveness of the probabilistic process is developed. We first predict the data sources where the query results could be found. Therefor, compared with existing approaches, our precision of retrieval is better and do not depend on the size and the DataSpace heterogeneity.

    We present a method to constrain a statistical generative word alignment model with the output from a discriminative model. The discriminative model is trained using a small set of hand-aligned data that ensures higher precision in alignment. On the other hand, the generative model improves the recall of alignment. By combining these two models, the alignment output becomes more suitable for use in developing a translation model for a phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT) system. Our experimental results show that the joint alignment model improves the translation performance. The improvement in average of BLEU and METEOR scores is around 1.0-3.9 points.

    A composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) using substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) with floating-conductor (SIW-type CRLH-TL) for microwave and millimeter wave frequencies has been proposed by the authors. This paper proposes a new configuration that is shield type of the SIW-type CRLH-TL, which can suppress the radiation from the exposed floating-conductors, and shows that even if the shielded structure is used, the SIW-type CRLH-TL supports the LH mode as well as the prototype. Proposed CRLH-TL consists of a SIW with slot apertures (part 1), a dielectric film with floating-conductors (part 2) and a SIW without lower conductor (part 3). A shielded SIW-type CRLH-TL for X--K band (with wide LH mode bandwidth of 6 GHz and transition frequency of 16 GHz) that satisfies the balance condition is designed. Dispersion diagram and S-parameters are derived numerically, and typical field distributions of RH and LH transmission and the zeroth-order resonance are shown. Measured result agrees well with theoretical result, by considering the accuracy performance and loss factors of the fabricated CRLH-TL. Proposed CRLH-TL has advantage of simple manufacturing, because the parts 1--3 are composed of simple planar periodic structure. It is expected to be one of the basic structure of CRLH-TL or components such as LH coupler above 10 GHz or millimeter wave frequency.

    Orientation field (OF) estimation is a fundamental process in fingerprint authentication systems. In this paper, a novel binary pattern based low-cost OF estimation algorithm is proposed. The new method consists of two modules. The first is block-level orientation estimation and averaging in vector space by pixel level orientation statistics. The second is orientation quantization and smoothing. In the second module, the continuous orientation is quantized into fixed orientations with sufficient resolution (interval between fixed orientations). An effective smoothing scheme on the quantized orientation space is also proposed. The proposed algorithm is capable of stably processing poor-quality fingerprint images and is validated by tests conducted on an adaptive OF matching scheme. The proposed algorithm is also implemented into a fingerprint System on Chip (SoC) to comfirm that it satisfies the strict requirements of embedded system.

    We develop a novel construction method for n-dimensional Hilbert space-filling curves. The construction method includes four steps: block allocation, Gray permutation, coordinate transformation and recursive construction. We use the tensor product theory to formulate the method. An n-dimensional Hilbert space-filling curve of 2r elements on each dimension is specified as a permutation which rearranges 2rn data elements stored in the row major order as in C language or the column major order as in FORTRAN language to the order of traversing an n-dimensional Hilbert space-filling curve. The tensor product formulation of n-dimensional Hilbert space-filling curves uses stride permutation, reverse permutation, and Gray permutation. We present both recursive and iterative tensor product formulas of n-dimensional Hilbert space-filling curves. The tensor product formulas are directly translated into computer programs which can be used in various applications. The process of program generation is explained in the paper.

  • Timing Recovery Strategies in Magnetic Recording Systems

    At some point in a digital communications receiver, the received analog signal must be sampled. Good performance requires that these samples be taken at the right times. The process of synchronizing the sampler with the received analog waveform is known as timing recovery. Conventional timing recovery techniques perform well only when operating at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Nonetheless, iterative error-control codes allow reliable communication at very low SNR, where conventional techniques fail. This paper provides a detailed review on the timing recovery strategies based on per-survivor processing (PSP) that are capable of working at low SNR. We also investigate their performance in magnetic recording systems because magnetic recording is a primary method of storage for a variety of applications, including desktop, mobile, and server systems. Results indicate that the timing recovery strategies based on PSP perform better than the conventional ones and are thus worth being employed in magnetic recording systems.

    In this letter, a derivative constraint minimum output energy (MOE) receiver is proposed the offers enhanced robustness against carrier frequency offset (CFO). A theoretical analysis of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is presented to confirm its efficacy. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed receiver basically offers the same performance as an optimal receiver with no CFO present.

    Error-propagation is an important issue and should be carefully coped with in the decision-feedback equalizers (DFE). Ignoring the impact of error-propagation often leads to impractical laboratory results. In this paper, we investigate two novel layered space-frequency equalizers (LSFE) for single-carrier multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the recently proposed frequency-domain equalizer with time domain noise-predictor (FDE-NP) is adopted at each stage of the LSFE. We first derive the partially-connected LSFE with noise predictor (PC-LSFE-NP) which has exactly the same mean square error (MSE) as the conventional LSFE under the assumption of perfect feedback. However, if error-propagation is considered, the proposed PC-LSFE-NP can achieve better performance than the conventional LSFE due to the more reliable feedback output by the decoders. To reduce the interference from the not yet detected layers in the feedback section, we then introduce the fully-connected LSFE with noise predictor (FC-LSFE-NP), in which all layers are implicitly equalized within each stage and their decisions fed back internally. The powerful feedback filter of FC-LSFE-NP brings significant performance superiority over the conventional LSFE and PC-LSFE-NP with either perfect or imperfect feedback. Moreover, we propose a simple soft-demapper for the equalizers to avoid information loss during decoding, and thus, further improve the performance. Finally, we compare the performance of (PC/FC)-LSFE-NP with the existing schemes by computer simulations.

  • Visualization of Intersecting Groups Based on Hypergraphs

    Hypergraphs drawn in the subset standard are useful to represent group relationships using topographic characteristics such as intersection, exclusion and enclosing. However, they present cluttering when dealing with a moderately high number of nodes (more than 20) and large hyperedges (connecting more than 10 nodes, with three or more overlapping nodes). At this complexity level, a study of the visual encoding of hypergraphs is required in order to reduce cluttering and increase the understanding of larger sets. Here we present a graph model and a visual design that help in the visualization of group relationships represented by hypergraphs. This is done by the use of superimposed visualization layers with different abstraction levels and the help of interaction and navigation through the display.

    An inter-modulation distortion (IMD) compensation method for thermal memory effect using a multistage RC-ladder circuit has been proposed. The IMD caused by the thermal memory effect on an InGaP/GaAs HBT amplifier was compensated for by inserting a multistage RC-ladder circuit in the base bias circuit of the amplifier. Since heat flux owing to self-heating in the transistor can be approximated with a multistage thermal RC-ladder circuit, the canceling of IMD by an additional electrical memory effect generated from the RC-ladder circuit is predicted. The memory effects cause asymmetrical characteristics between upper and lower IMD. The IMD caused by the memory effects is expressed as a vector sum of each origin. By adjusting an electrical reactance characteristic for sub-harmonics affected by the thermal memory effect in the amplifier circuit, the asymmetric characteristic is symmetrized. The parameters of the RC-ladder circuit were estimated so that the adjusted electrical reactance characteristic is reproduced in simulation. A fabricated InGaP/GaAs HBT amplifier with the thermal memory effect compensation circuit exhibited a symmetrized and suppressed IMD characteristics.

    We propose an improved reference speaker weighting (RSW) and speaker cluster weighting (SCW) approach that uses an aspect model. The concept of the approach is that the adapted model is a linear combination of a few latent reference models obtained from a set of reference speakers. The aspect model has specific latent-space characteristics that differ from orthogonal basis vectors of eigenvoice. The aspect model is a "mixture-of-mixture" model. We first calculate a small number of latent reference models as mixtures of distributions of the reference speaker's models, and then the latent reference models are mixed to obtain the adapted distribution. The mixture weights are calculated based on the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. We use the obtained mixture weights for interpolating mean parameters of the distributions. Both training and adaptation are performed based on likelihood maximization with respect to the training and adaptation data, respectively. We conduct a continuous speech recognition experiment using a Korean database (KAIST-TRADE). The results are compared to those of a conventional MAP, MLLR, RSW, eigenvoice and SCW. Absolute word accuracy improvement of 2.06 point was achieved using the proposed method, even though we use only 0.3 s of adaptation data.

  • A New Region-Based Active Contour Model with Skewness Wavelet Energy for Segmentation of SAR Images

    A new method of segmentation for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images using the skewness wavelet energy has been presented. The skewness is the third order cumulant which measures the local texture along the region-based active contour. Nonlinearity in intensity inhomogeneities often occur in SAR images due to the speckle noise. In this paper we propose a region-based active contour model that is able to use the intensity information in local regions and to cope with the speckle noise and nonlinear intensity inhomogeneity of SAR images. We use a wavelet coefficients energy distribution to analyze the SAR image texture in each sub-band. A fitting energy called skewness wavelet energy is defined in terms of a contour and a functional so that, the regions and their interfaces will be modeled by level set functions. A functional relationship has been calculated on these level sets in terms of the third order cumulant, from which an energy minimization is derived. Minimizing the calculated functions derives the optimal segmentation based on the texture definitions. The results of the implemented algorithm on the test images from the Radarsat SAR images of agricultural and urban regions show a desirable performance of the proposed method.

    Integer codes are very flexible and can be applied in different modulation schemes. A soft decoding algorithm for integer codes will be introduced. Comparison of symbol error probability (SEP) versus signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between soft and hard decoding using integer coded modulation shows us that we can obtain at least 2 dB coding gain. Also, we shall compare our results with trellis coded modulation (TCM) because of their similar decoding schemes and complexity.
