In this study, a wideband 3/4 elliptical ring patch operating millimeter wave band is proposed. Using this structure, the patch antenna is designed for circular polarization and wide-band operation at about 32.1-40 GHz for millimeter wave communication. Simulated and measured results for main parameters such as voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), impedance bandwidth, axial ratio, radiation patterns and gains are also discussed. The study shows that modeling of such antennas, with simplicity in designing and feeding, can well meet the requirements of millimeter-wave wireless communication systems.

This paper presents an automatic edge segment based algorithm for the detection of moving objects that has been specially developed to deal with the variations in illumination and contents of background. We investigated the suitability of the proposed edge segment based moving object detection algorithm in comparison with the traditional intensity based as well as edge pixel based detection methods. In our method, edges are extracted from video frames and are represented as segments using an efficiently designed edge class. This representation helps to obtain the geometric information of edge in the case of edge matching and shape retrieval; and creates effective means to incorporate knowledge into edge segment during background modeling and motion tracking. An efficient approach for background edge generation and a robust method of edge matching are presented to effectively reduce the risk of false alarm due to illumination change and camera motion while maintaining the high sensitivity to the presence of moving object. The proposed method can be successfully realized in video surveillance applications in home networking environment as well as various monitoring systems. As, video coding standard MPEG-4 enables content based functionality, it can successfully utilize the shape information of the detected moving objects to achieve high coding efficiency. Experiments with real image sequences, along with comparisons with some other existing methods are presented, illustrating the robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Wireless content sharing where peers share content and services via wireless access networks requires user contributions, as in fixed P2P content sharing. However, in wireless access environments, since the resources of mobile terminals are strictly limited, mobile users are not as likely to contribute as ones in fixed environments. Therefore, incentives to encourage user contributions are more significant in wireless access environments. Although an incentive service differentiation architecture where the content transfer rate is adjusted according to the contributions of each downloading user has been already proposed for fixed P2P, it may not work well in wireless access environments because several factors effect wireless throughput. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture for contribution-based transfer-rate differentiation using wireless quality of service (QoS) techniques that motivates users to contribute their resources for wireless content sharing. We also propose a radio resource assignment method for our architecture. Computer simulations and game-theoretic calculations validate our architecture.

In this paper, we investigate a detection ordering scheme of OSIC (Ordered Successive Interference Cancellation) systems suitable for power controlled MIMO transmission. Most studies about power controlled systems have mainly focused on strategies for transmitter, while the ordering scheme optimized at open-loop system has not been modified. In a conventional ordering scheme, the ordering process is done according to the largeness and smallness relation of each sub-stream's SNR. Unlike the conventional scheme, we derive an optimized detection ordering scheme that uses proximity to the optimal SNR. Because of error propagation, our proximity based algorithm is not valid for open-loop MIMO system in many cases. An optimization problem analysis and simulation results show that the system using the proposed ordering scheme outperforms the system using the conventional ordering scheme. Furthermore, due to the nature of QR decomposition, the proposed scheme shows not only lower implementation complexity but also better BER performance compared with the conventional scheme based on pseudo-inverse.

This paper proposes a method for reinforcing noun countability prediction, which plays a crucial role in demarcating correct determiners in machine translation and error detection. The proposed method reinforces countability prediction by introducing a novel heuristics called one countability per discourse. It claims that when a noun appears more than once in a discourse, all instances will share identical countability. The basic idea of the proposed method is that mispredictions can be corrected by efficiently using one countability per discourse heuristics. Experiments show that the proposed method successfully reinforces countability prediction and outperforms other methods used for comparison. In addition to its performance, it has two advantages over earlier methods: (i) it is applicable to any countability prediction method, and (ii) it requires no human intervention to reinforce countability prediction.

In this letter, we propose an efficient scheme for combining scheduling and channel allocation functions in multi-channel systems such as an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). In our approach, the scheduling function is embedded in the channel allocation function in an implicit manner, and the implicit scheduler only translates quality-of-service (QoS) requirements into a set of constraints on channel allocation. The channel allocation problem is then formulated as a linear programming (LP) problem, and the optimal solution can be easily obtained through various LP algorithms. Through extensive numerical experiments, it is demonstrated that the proposed scheme can maximize the cell throughput under the given QoS requirements.

In this paper we propose a discrete program-size dependent software reliability growth model flexibly describing the software failure-occurrence phenomenon based on a discrete Weibull distribution. We also conduct model comparisons of our discrete SRGM with existing discrete SRGMs by using actual data sets. The program size is one of the important metrics of software complexity. It is known that flexible discrete software reliability growth modeling is difficult due to the mathematical manipulation under a conventional modeling-framework in which the time-dependent behavior of the cumulative number of detected faults is formulated by a difference equation. Our discrete SRGM is developed under an existing unified modeling-framework based on the concept of general order-statistics, and can incorporate the effect of the program size into software reliability assessment. Further, we discuss the method of parameter estimation, and derive software reliability assessment measures of our discrete SRGM. Finally, we show numerical examples of discrete software reliability analysis based on our discrete SRGM by using actual data.

For formal verification of large-scale digital circuits, a method using satisfiability checking of logic with equality and uninterpreted functions has been proposed. This logic, however, does not consider specific properties of functions or predicates at all, e.g. associative property of addition. In order to ease this problem, we introduce "equivalence constraint" that is a set of formulas representing the properties of functions and predicates, and check the satisfiability of formulas under the constraint. In this report, we show an algorithm for checking satisfiability with equivalence constraint and also experimental results.

This paper presents MACs that combine a block cipher and its component such as a reduced-round version. Our MACs are faster than the standard MAC modes such as CBC-MAC, and provably secure if the block cipher is pseudorandom and its component is a permutation with a small differential probability. Such a MAC scheme was recently proposed by one of authors, and we provide improvements about security and treading-off between speed and amount of preprocessing.

Normalization transform is known to be very useful for finding the overall trend of time-series data since it enables finding sequences with similar fluctuation patterns. Previous subsequence matching methods with normalization transform, however, would incur index overhead both in storage space and in update maintenance since they should build multiple indexes for supporting query sequences of arbitrary length. To solve this problem, we adopt a single-index approach in the normalization-transformed subsequence matching that supports query sequences of arbitrary length. For the single-index approach, we first provide the notion of inclusion-normalization transform by generalizing the original definition of normalization transform. To normalize a window, the inclusion-normalization transform uses the mean and the standard deviation of a subsequence that includes the window while the original transform uses those of the window itself. Next, we formally prove the correctness of the proposed normalization-transformed subsequence matching method that uses the inclusion-normalization transform. We then propose subsequence matching and index-building algorithms to implement the proposed method. Experimental results for real stock data show that our method improves performance by up to 2.52.8 times compared with the previous method.

Design automation of LCD driver circuits is not sophisticatedly established. Display fineness of an LCD panel depends on a performance metric, ratio of pixel voltage to video voltage (RPV). However, there are several other important metrics, such as area, and the best circuit cannot be decided uniquely. This paper proposes a design automation technique for a LCD column driver to provide several circuit design results with different performance so that designers can select an appropriate design among them. The proposed technique is evaluated with an actual design data, and experimental results show that the proposed method successfully performs technology migration by transistor sizing. Also, the proposed technique is experimentally verified from points of solution quality and computational time.

Numerical function generators (NFGs) realize arithmetic functions, such as ex,sin(πx), and , in hardware. They are used in applications where high-speed is essential, such as in digital signal or graphics applications. We introduce the edge-valued binary decision diagram (EVBDD) as a means of reducing the delay and memory requirements in NFGs. We also introduce a recursive segmentation algorithm, which divides the domain of the function to be realized into segments, where the given function is realized as a polynomial. This design reduces the size of the multiplier needed and thus reduces delay. It is also shown that an adder can be replaced by a set of 2-input AND gates, further reducing delay. We compare our results to NFGs designed with multi-terminal BDDs (MTBDDs). We show that EVBDDs yield a design that has, on the average, only 39% of the memory and 58% of the delay of NFGs designed using MTBDDs.

For coherent detection, decoding Orthogonal Space-Time Block Codes (OSTBC) requires full channel state information at the receiver, which basically is obtained by channel estimation. However, in practical systems, channel estimation errors are inevitable and may degrade the system performance more as the number of antennas increases. This letter shows that, using fewer receive antennas can enhance the performance of OSTBC systems in presence of channel estimation errors. Furthermore, a novel adaptive receive antenna selection scheme, which adaptively adjusts the number of receive antennas, is proposed. Performance evaluation and numerical examples show that the proposed scheme improves the performance obviously.

Ziv-Lempel incremental parsing [1] is a fundamental algorithm for lossless data compression. There is a simple enumerative implementation [7] which preserves a duality between the encoder and the decoder. However, due to its compactness, the implementation when combined with a complete integer code, allows only an input sequence with a length consistent with the parsing boundaries. In this letter, we propose a simple additional mechanism for post-processing a binary file of arbitrary length, provided the file punctuation is externally managed.

Wireless mesh networks are attracting more and more attention as a promising technology for the next generation access infrastructure. QoS support is a unavoidable task given the rising popularity of multimedia applications, and also a challenging task for multi-hop wireless mesh networks. Among the numerous QoS factors, end-to-end delay is one of the most critical and important issues, especially for the real time applications. Over multi-hop wireless mesh networks, end-to-end delay of a flow is highly dependant on the number of hops as well as congestion condition of the hop nodes that the flow traverses through. In this paper, we propose QoS priority control schemes based on the end-to-end QoS delay metrics in order to increase traffic accommodation, i.e., the numbers of real-time flows which satisfy the requirements of end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio over multi-hop wireless mesh networks. The first scheme enables source and forwarding nodes to perform priority control based on the number of hops of routes. The second scheme enables nodes to perform priority control based on the congestion condition of the hop nodes, where the flow traverses through. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes is investigated with NS-2 network simulator for voice and video traffics over multi-hop wireless mesh networks. Simulation results show that the scheme greatly improves the traffic accommodation for voice and video applications in multi-hop wireless mesh networks.

IEEE 802.11e Medium Access Control (MAC) is a supplement to the IEEE 802.11 Wireless Network (WLAN) standard to support Quality of Service (QoS). The 802.11e MAC defines a new coordination function, namely Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF), which takes the QoS requirements of flows into account and allocates Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) to stations. On the basis of mean sending rate, delay of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) traffic cannot be bounded with the reference HCF scheduling algorithm proposed in this supplement. In this paper, we propose a new Connection Admission Control (CAC) and a scheduling algorithm that utilize the token bucket and a modified Latency-Rate (LR) scheduling algorithm to guarantee a bounded delay for HCF Controlled Channel Access (HCCA). The new Service Interval (SI) is calculated to optimize the number of stations accommodated and takes into account delay bound and token bucket parameters. We show that it is possible to obtain worst-case performance guarantees on delay. First, we analyze the behavior of the new scheduler with a loss free wireless channel model and after this, with a burst loss model and we explain how it is possible to extend this scheduler for a multi-rate scheme. Properties of the proposal are investigated both theoretically and using ns-2 simulations. We present a set of simulations with both Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and VBR flows and performance comparisons with HCF scheduling algorithm. The results show that the delay upper bound can be achieved for a large range of networks load with bandwidth optimization.

In a frequency-selective multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel, the optimum transmission is achieved by beamforming with eigenvectors obtained at each discrete frequency point, i.e., an extension of eigenbeam-space division multiplexing (E-SDM). However, the calculation load of eigenvalue decomposition at the transmitter increases in proportion to the number of frequency points. In addition, frequency-independent eigenvectors increase the delay spread of the effective channel observed at the receiver. In this paper, we propose a pseudo eigenvector scheme for the purpose of mitigating the calculation load and maintaining frequency continuity (or decreasing the delay spread). First, we demonstrate that pseudo eigenvectors reduce the delay spread of the effective channels with low computational complexity. Next, the practical performance of the pseudo E-SDM (PE-SDM) transmission is evaluated. The simulation results show that PE-SDM provides almost the same or better performance compared with E-SDM when the receiver employs a time-windowing-based channel estimation available in the low delay spread cases.

It is shown that in case of ultra wideband transmit signals providing very high time resolution the correlation function can be approximated by a product of two separate functions of time.
