Post annealing treatment for CoCrPt magnetic thin films were tried in different thermal conditions, by changing the time of annealing procedure. Coercivity (Hc) improvement was achieved in annealed sample compared with those as deposited, in which as high as 5.2 kOe has been attained. To clarify the mechanism of annealing treatment on the magnetic properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrums of those samples and their magnetic properties were carefully studied. Co and Cr lattice parameters were separately calculated from different crystal lattice plane. It was found that a axis lattice spacing of Co hexagonal structure increases monotonically with increased annealing time. Variation of Co hcp peaks significance may due to Cr or Pt redistribution in the crystal grains and its boundaries. Combined with the grain size analysis of Co-rich area by X-ray diffraction peak broaden width, which was not very consistent with the result obtained from other's TEM and AFM studies, Cr diffusion was suggested to be the governing factor at short annealing time region. Co-rich grain growth should also be applied to explain the variation of magnetic properties in longer post annealing.

This paper describes how to generate, analyze and design a novel current-mode filter model using tunable multiple-output operational transconductance amplifiers and grounded capacitors (MO-OTA-Cs) for synthesizing both transmission poles and zeros. Transfer functions of low-order, high-order, general type, and special type are realized based on the filter model. The theory focuses mainly on establishing a relationship between the cascaded MO-OTA-Cs and the multiple-loop feedback matrix, which makes the structural generation and design formulas. Adopting the theory allows us to systematically generate many interesting new configurations along with some known structures. All the filter architectures contain only grounded capacitors, which can absorb parasitic capacitances and require smaller chip areas than floating ones. The paper also presents numerical design examples and simulation results to confirm the theoretical analysis.

A novel algorithm associated with fractal preprocessors, wavelet feature extractors and unsupervised neural classifiers is proposed for detecting radar targets embedded in sea ice and sea clutter. Utilizing the advantages of fractals, wavelets and neural networks, the algorithm is suitable for real-time and automatic applications. Fractal preprocessor can increase 10 dB signal-to-clutter ratios (S/C) for radar images by using fractal error. Fractal error will make easy to detect radar targets embedded in high clutter environments. Wavelet feature extractors with a high speed computing architecture, can extract enough information for classifying radar targets and clutter, and improve signal-to-clutter ratios. Wavelet feature extractors can also provide flexible combinations for feature vectors at different clutter environments. The unsupervised neural classifier has a parallel operation architecture easily applied to hardware, and a low computational load algorithm without manual interventions during learning stage. We modified the unsupervised competitive learning algorithm to be applicable for detecting small radar targets by introducing an asymmetry neighborhood factor. The asymmetry neighborhood factor can provide a protective learning to prevent interference from clutter and improve the learning effects of radar targets. The small radar targets in Millimeter wave (MMW) and X-band radar images have been successfully discriminated by our proposed algorithm. The effective, efficient, high noise immunity characteristics for our proposed algorithm have been demonstrated to be suitable for automatic and real time applications.

Ferromagnetic Co77Cr20Ta3 layers were deposited on a Pt seed layer by a facing targets sputtering apparatus. The Co-Cr-Ta and Pt crystallites revealed better c-axis orientation at a substrate temperature Ts above 200C. Relatively high perpendicular coercivity Hc⊥ of 2.5 kOe was obtained for the bilayered film with a Co-Cr-Ta layer thickness, δCo, of 50 nm deposited at Ts of 250C. Although the Co-Cr-Ta/Pt medium with δCo of 100 nm exhibited lower recording density than a Co-Cr-Ta/Cr longitudinal one, its noise level became small at the high-density recording range. Measurement of the anomalous Hall voltage clarified that the bilayered film with δCo as small as 30 nm revealed larger perpendicular magnetization than the single layer. The Pt seed layer is effective for depositing thin ferromagnetic Co-Cr-Ta layers below 100 nm in thickness.

In this paper, as a practical application, we focus on the genetic algorithm (GA) for multi-head surface mounting machines which are used to populate printed circuit boards (PCBs). Although there have been numerous studies on the surface mounting machine, studies on the multi-head case are rare because of its complexity. The multi-head surface mounting machine can pick multiple components simultaneously in one pickup operation and this operation can reduce much portion of the assembly time. Hence we try to minimize the assembly time by maximizing the number of simultaneous pickups, resulting in reduction of PCB production cost. This research introduces a partial-link GA method for the single-head case. Then, we apply this method to the multi-head case by regarding a reel-group as one reel and a component-cluster as one component. The results of computer simulation show that our genetic algorithm is greatly superior to the heuristic algorithm that is currently used in industry.

This paper presents an application of Complex-Valued Associative Memory Model(CAMM) for image processing. An image association system applying CAMM, combined with a 2-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2-D DFT) process is proposed. Discussed are how a gray level image can be expressed using CAMM, and the image association that can be performed by CAMM. In the proposed system, input images are transformed to phase matrices and the image association can be performed by making use of the phase information. Practical examples are also presented.

In this letter, a new rapid converging method based on orthogonalization is proposed. Our approach is to find the near-optimum coefficient values during training period, and then use them as the initial values of the LMS algorithm. The numerical results show that the rapid convergence speed of the proposed scheme does not depend on the eigenvalue spread.

Co-ferrite thin films have been fabricated on Corning glass substrates by a chelating sol-gel process. Structural and magnetic properties of the films have been studied as a function of annealing temperature using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a vibrating sample magnetometer. XRD results revealed that most of the Co-ferrite grains were randomly oriented. Rapid annealing (RA) and standard annealing (SA) processes were used for the variation of heat treatment and the characteristic comparison. Coercivity was changed with the thermal condition and the magnetization increased with the soaking time. With prolonged soaking time, however, the coercivity decreased due to the diffusion of cations from the glass substrate. RA in the preparation of Co-ferrite thin films was effective for preventing interdiffusion at interfaces and for forming a single phase in the case of reduced soaking time. A yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer between the Co-ferrite layer and the substrate was effective for improving the magnetic properties of the films at higher temperatures. It was observed that Co-ferrite thin films were composed of grains typically 35 nm in size and their rms roughness was approximately 1.3 nm. The saturation magnetization of the thin films by subjected to rapid annealing at 900C for 150 seconds was 400 emu/cm3 and the coercivity of the films was approximately 3000 Oe.

Several packaging methods for athermalization of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), which is equipped with negative expansion substrates, have been proposed. However, those methods have some deficiency resulted from the substrates such as complex structure or poor thermal expansion characteristics. In order to provide a suitable substrate for the athermalization of FBG, the authors have developed a Negative Expansion Ceramic Substrate (NECS) which has simple structure and suitable thermal expansion characteristics. NECS consists of polycrystalline β-quartz solid solution (Li2O-Al2O3-nSiO2, n>2), and has thermal expansion coefficient of about -65 to -85 10-7/C, which is sufficient large enough for total compensation of the Bragg wavelength shift. No difference in the thermal expansion was observed between the specimen as prepared and the one on which an epoxy adhesive was applied. NECS is produced by means of a sintering method, which enables flexible design of the chemical composition. It was found that the hysteresis in thermal expansion of the NECS depends upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. We decreased thermal expansion hysteresis by controlling the SiO2 ratio in the composition and the crystal grain size. We confirmed that the temperature dependence of the FBG mounted on the NECS with an epoxy adhesive was decreased to -2.3 10-3 nm/C from 10.0 10-3 nm/C, in good agreement with the calculated value of -2.6 10-3 nm/C. The hysteresis in Bragg wavelength shift was less than 0.03 nm, that is sufficiently small enough for practical use. It was confirmed that NECS has suitable thermal expansion characteristics for the athermalization of FBG.

A tunable optical Fabry-Perrot filter was designed by setting a single-mode optical fiber normal to the diaphragm of a capacitive pressure sensor. The silicon diaphragm is deflected by the electrostatic force generated by applying a voltage to the capacitive electrodes. According to the movement of the diaphragm, the peak wavelength changed from 1546 to 1551 nm when applied voltage was increased from 20 to 50 V. The relationship of the wavelength change to the applied voltage was derived from the silicon diaphragm deflection theory. That measured change of the wavelength agrees well with the wavelength change calculated from this relationship. The commercial pressure sensors are expected to be able to be used as a tunable optical filter.

Aiming at lower cost and further miniaturization, we developed a new optical coupling system for use as an optical interface of a parallel optical interconnect module, called ParaBIT-1. It consists of a new-structure 24-fiber bare fiber (BF) connector whose main parts are made of molded plastic and a 24-channel optical coupling component using new polymeric optical waveguide film. To prevent bare fibers from breaking, the BF connector plug has a fiber protector. This BF connector can be joined by direct physical contact between bare fibers in fiber guide holes with a 250-µm pitch. The buckling forces of the fibers themselves secure the physical contacts. The average measured insertion loss of the 24-fiber BF connector was 0.05 dB, and the return losses were over 35 dB. The optical coupling components are composed of a 24-ch polymeric optical waveguide film with 45 mirrors and the 24-fiber BF connector interface, and can be assembled by passive alignment. The high thermal stability of the film allows soldering, and the film is fabricated by direct photo patterning. The average insertion losses of the components for transmitter and receiver modules were 1.28 and 1.35 dB, respectively.

Magnetic layer thickness dependences of magnetic properties are investigated for Co-Cr-Pt polycrystalline thin films with different Cr-alloy underlayers (Cr-Ti, Cr-W, Cr-Mo, Cr-V, Cr-Mo-V). The specimens with Cr-Ti, Cr-V, and Cr-Mo-V underlayers show higher coercivities by about 30% and lower activation magnetic moments than those with Cr-Mo underlayer. The effective diameter of activation volume increases by 10-20% when the magnetic layer thickness is decreased from 12 to 8 nm. Temperature dependences of magnetic properties are also determined and discussed by referring to the data obtained using single crystal magnetic thin films with similar composition.

In this paper, the improvement technique for a nonlinear parallel interference cancellation (PIC) receiver for a DS-CDMA system is studied, which cancels only the estimated multiple access interference (MAI) from specific users at each receiver stage. This technique was introduced as a PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in the proceeding of IEEE MILCOM '94, but the numerical results has not been fully provided with varying decision threshold. In this paper, the performance of the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision is shown in a Rayleigh fading channel. Also, a new PIC receiver with an adaptive decision threshold is proposed. In the proposed new PIC receiver, the decision threshold for partial cancellation is adjusted according to the statistic of its matched filter (MF) outputs. The BER of the proposed PIC receiver is obtained by simulation and compared with those of the conventional PIC receiver and the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in a Rayleigh fading channel. It is shown that the proposed PIC receiver achieves better performance than the conventional PIC receiver and the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in a Rayleigh fading channel.

This paper presents a Path Bandwidth Management (PBM) model for large-scale networks that leads to an almost optimal PB allocation, under constraints posed by the installed bandwidth in the transmission links of the network. The PB allocation procedure is driven from a traffic demand matrix and consists of three phases. In the first phase, a suitable decomposition of the whole network takes place, where the large-scale network is split to a set of one-level sub-networks. In the second phase, the optimization algorithm developed for one-level telecommunication networks is applied to each sub-network in order to define the optimal PB allocation. The criterion for optimization is to minimize the worst Call Blocking Probability (CBP) of all switching pairs of the sub-network. In the third phase, composition of the sub-networks takes place in a successive way, which leads to the final PB allocation of the large-scale network. As the large-scale network is built up from optimized sub-networks, an almost optimal PB allocation is anticipated. For evaluation, the worst resultant CBP of the proposed scheme is compared with that obtained by the optimal PB allocation procedure in order to prove its optimality and efficiency. We choose a set of large-scale networks whose size is not very large so that we can apply the optimization algorithm developed for one-level telecom networks for defining its optimal bandwidth allocation. Extensive evaluation of the PBM model has showed that the worst resultant CBP is about 2% above the optimal value, which is a satisfactory result. The proposed PBM scheme is explained by means of an application example.

This paper first examines the issues related to scheduling loop applications on a software distributed shared memory (DSM) system. Then, a dynamic scheduling scheme is developed based on the examined issues to enhance the performance of loop applications on DSM. Compared with previous works, the proposed scheme has several specialties. The first is that the workload of processors can be effectively balanced even when the computational capabilities of processors and the computational needs of threads are not identical. The second is it divides thread mapping into two phases, each with one consideration, i.e., load balance or communication cost, and adopts thread migration and exchange in the two phases, respectively. The third is the exploitation of data sharing among threads to reduce data-consistency communication, and the last is to attack the negative effect of the unnecessary inter-node sharing caused by thread re-mapping. The proposed scheme has been implemented on a page-based DSM system called Cohesion. Our experiments show that the proposed scheme is more effective to improve the performance of the test programs than related schemes.

This paper investigates the modeling of non-linearity on the generation of the single trial evoked potential signal (s-EP) by means of using a mixed radial basis function neural network (M-RBFN). The more emphasis is put on the contribution of spontaneous EEG term to s-EP signal. The method is based on a nonlinear M-RBFN neural network model that is trained simultaneously with the different segments of EEG/EP data. Then, the output of the trained model (estimator) is a both fitted and reduced (optimized) nonlinear model and then provide a global representation of the passage dynamics between spontaneous brain activity and poststimulus periods. The performance of the proposed neural network method is evaluated using a realistic simulation and applied to a real EEG/EP measurement.

In this paper, we describe a method of determining meat quality using the concepts of "marbling score" and texture analysis. The marbling score is a measure of the density distribution of fat in the rib-eye region. Based on the results of an investigation carried out by handing out questionnaires to graders, we consider the marbling of meat to be a texture pattern and propose a method for the implementation of a grading system using a texture feature. In this system, we use a gray level co-occurrence matrix as the texture feature, which is a typical second-order statistic of gray levels of a texture image, and determine standard texture-feature vectors for each grade based on it. The grade of an unevaluated image is determined by comparing the texture-feature vector of this unevaluated image with the standard texture-feature vectors. Experimental results show the proposed method to be effective.

Natural language interface systems can accept more unrestricted queries from users than other systems, however it is impossible to understand erroneous sentences which include the syntax errors, unknown words and misspelling. In order to realize the superior natural language interface, the automatic error correction for erroneous sentences is one of problems to be solved. The method to apply the LR parsing strategies is one of the famous approaches as the robust error recovery scheme. This method is able to obtain a high correction accuracy, however it takes a great deal of time to parse the sentence, such that it becomes a very important task to improve the time-cost. In this paper, we propose the method to improve the time efficiency, keeping the correction accuracy of the traditional method. This method makes use of a new parsing table that denotes the states to be transited after accepting each symbol. By using this table, the symbol which is allocated just after the error position can be utilized for selecting correction symbols, as a result, the number of candidates produced on the correction process is reduced, and fast system can be realized. The experiment results, using 1,050 sentences including error characters, show that this method can correct error points 69 times faster than the traditional method, also keep the same correction accuracy as the traditional method.
