  • Image Association Using a Complex-Valued Associative Memory Model

    This paper presents an application of Complex-Valued Associative Memory Model(CAMM) for image processing. An image association system applying CAMM, combined with a 2-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2-D DFT) process is proposed. Discussed are how a gray level image can be expressed using CAMM, and the image association that can be performed by CAMM. In the proposed system, input images are transformed to phase matrices and the image association can be performed by making use of the phase information. Practical examples are also presented.

    We analyze the performance of soft handoff used as intergroup handoff in the fiber-optic cellular system. Performance is evaluated in view of blocking and handoff refused probability. The numerical results show that the smaller the handoff region or the more the channel, the larger the system capacity.

  • Co-Cr-Ta/Pt Bilayered Films for Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Media

    Ferromagnetic Co77Cr20Ta3 layers were deposited on a Pt seed layer by a facing targets sputtering apparatus. The Co-Cr-Ta and Pt crystallites revealed better c-axis orientation at a substrate temperature Ts above 200C. Relatively high perpendicular coercivity Hc⊥ of 2.5 kOe was obtained for the bilayered film with a Co-Cr-Ta layer thickness, δCo, of 50 nm deposited at Ts of 250C. Although the Co-Cr-Ta/Pt medium with δCo of 100 nm exhibited lower recording density than a Co-Cr-Ta/Cr longitudinal one, its noise level became small at the high-density recording range. Measurement of the anomalous Hall voltage clarified that the bilayered film with δCo as small as 30 nm revealed larger perpendicular magnetization than the single layer. The Pt seed layer is effective for depositing thin ferromagnetic Co-Cr-Ta layers below 100 nm in thickness.

  • Determination of Meat Quality Using Texture Features

    In this paper, we describe a method of determining meat quality using the concepts of "marbling score" and texture analysis. The marbling score is a measure of the density distribution of fat in the rib-eye region. Based on the results of an investigation carried out by handing out questionnaires to graders, we consider the marbling of meat to be a texture pattern and propose a method for the implementation of a grading system using a texture feature. In this system, we use a gray level co-occurrence matrix as the texture feature, which is a typical second-order statistic of gray levels of a texture image, and determine standard texture-feature vectors for each grade based on it. The grade of an unevaluated image is determined by comparing the texture-feature vector of this unevaluated image with the standard texture-feature vectors. Experimental results show the proposed method to be effective.

    Natural language interface systems can accept more unrestricted queries from users than other systems, however it is impossible to understand erroneous sentences which include the syntax errors, unknown words and misspelling. In order to realize the superior natural language interface, the automatic error correction for erroneous sentences is one of problems to be solved. The method to apply the LR parsing strategies is one of the famous approaches as the robust error recovery scheme. This method is able to obtain a high correction accuracy, however it takes a great deal of time to parse the sentence, such that it becomes a very important task to improve the time-cost. In this paper, we propose the method to improve the time efficiency, keeping the correction accuracy of the traditional method. This method makes use of a new parsing table that denotes the states to be transited after accepting each symbol. By using this table, the symbol which is allocated just after the error position can be utilized for selecting correction symbols, as a result, the number of candidates produced on the correction process is reduced, and fast system can be realized. The experiment results, using 1,050 sentences including error characters, show that this method can correct error points 69 times faster than the traditional method, also keep the same correction accuracy as the traditional method.

    This paper presents a novel competitive learning algorithm for the design of variable-rate vector quantizers (VQs). The algorithm, termed variable-rate competitive learning (VRCL) algorithm, designs a VQ having minimum average distortion subject to a rate constraint. The VRCL performs the weight vector training in the wavelet domain so that required training time is short. In addition, the algorithm enjoys a better rate-distortion performance than that of other existing VQ design algorithms and competitive learning algorithms. The learning algorithm is also more insensitive to the selection of initial codewords as compared with existing design algorithms. Therefore, the VRCL algorithm can be an effective alternative to the existing variable-rate VQ design algorithms for the applications of signal compression.

    The radiation emission in far zones from printed circuit boards (PCBs) is obtained by treating lines on PCBs as transmission lines and calculating the far-field emission due to current distribution on lines. In this paper, we present a more precise circuit model, based on TEM assumption, to decompose the total current into differential-mode current and common-mode current. This circuit model is based on transmission line model, but it considers the effect of ground trace. The finite size ground trace can be viewed as an inductive reactance. A knowledge of the net inductance of the ground trace can aid in the analysis and investigation of PCBs emission. We show the derived equations of the modified transmission lines for the geometrics of practical interest. As time-varying current passes through such ground trace, a voltage drop due to the inductance of the trace will act as a source of the common-mode current. Furthermore, charge stored in capacitance between signal and ground traces will cause the current pulses returning to their source. The magnitudes of currents are slightly unequal in the signal and ground traces, which can cause common-mode current to flow. An unbalanced circuit on a PCB constructed with signal and ground trace pairs will radiate as an asymmetric folded-dipole. By antenna theory, the contribution of differential-mode and common-mode currents to radiated emission of PCBs can be calculated. In addition, comparisons between experimental results and calculation results are also given.

    This paper focuses on a single BSA (Basic Service Area) in an infrastructure network and studies the performance of the IEEE 802.11 standard MAC protocol by means of simulation. The MAC protocol supports DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). The simulation model includes both data transmission with the DCF and H.263 video transmission with the PCF. In the simulation we assume that the channel transmission rate is 2 Mbps and use the system parameters specified in the standard for the DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) physical layer. We evaluate the performance of this protocol in terms of throughput and MPDU (MAC Protocol Data Unit) delay for various values of the CFP (Contention Free Period) repetition interval and the CFP maximum duration. Numerical results show that if the CFP repetition interval is set too long, video MPDU delay becomes very large periodically; therefore, average video MPDU delay deteriorates. We also find that as the CFP maximum duration decreases, the number of video terminals that can be accommodated in the system decreases. Furthermore, how channel transmission errors affect the performance of the protocol is examined. A two-state continuous-time Markov model is used as a burst error model. As a result, we see that for a small number of video terminals, the average video-MPDU-delay performance does not deteriorate drastically for larger values of bit error rate.

  • Scheduling Loop Applications in Software Distributed Shared Memory Systems

    This paper first examines the issues related to scheduling loop applications on a software distributed shared memory (DSM) system. Then, a dynamic scheduling scheme is developed based on the examined issues to enhance the performance of loop applications on DSM. Compared with previous works, the proposed scheme has several specialties. The first is that the workload of processors can be effectively balanced even when the computational capabilities of processors and the computational needs of threads are not identical. The second is it divides thread mapping into two phases, each with one consideration, i.e., load balance or communication cost, and adopts thread migration and exchange in the two phases, respectively. The third is the exploitation of data sharing among threads to reduce data-consistency communication, and the last is to attack the negative effect of the unnecessary inter-node sharing caused by thread re-mapping. The proposed scheme has been implemented on a page-based DSM system called Cohesion. Our experiments show that the proposed scheme is more effective to improve the performance of the test programs than related schemes.

  • Nonlinear Parallel Interference Cancellation with Partial Cancellation for a DS-CDMA System

    In this paper, the improvement technique for a nonlinear parallel interference cancellation (PIC) receiver for a DS-CDMA system is studied, which cancels only the estimated multiple access interference (MAI) from specific users at each receiver stage. This technique was introduced as a PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in the proceeding of IEEE MILCOM '94, but the numerical results has not been fully provided with varying decision threshold. In this paper, the performance of the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision is shown in a Rayleigh fading channel. Also, a new PIC receiver with an adaptive decision threshold is proposed. In the proposed new PIC receiver, the decision threshold for partial cancellation is adjusted according to the statistic of its matched filter (MF) outputs. The BER of the proposed PIC receiver is obtained by simulation and compared with those of the conventional PIC receiver and the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in a Rayleigh fading channel. It is shown that the proposed PIC receiver achieves better performance than the conventional PIC receiver and the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in a Rayleigh fading channel.

    A constraint resolution scheme in the Hopfield-type neural network named "Neuron Filter" is presented for efficiently solving combinatorial optimization problems. The neuron filter produces an output that satisfies the constraints of the problem as best as possible according to both neuron inputs and outputs. This paper defines the neuron filter and shows its introduction into existing neural networks for N-queens problems and FPGA board-level routing problems. The performance is evaluated through simulations where the results show that our neuron filter improves the searching capability of the neural network with the shorter computation time.

  • Development and Field Experiment of L-Band High-Resolution Ice-Radar

    We have built a pulse-compressed high-resolution radar for surveying polar ice caps and ice sheet. In experiments with this instrument at the Agassiz ice cap, radio echoes from the bedrock and internal layers measured with high resolution. The resolution of the radar in ice is about 1 meter. The greatest depth from which signals from bedrock were received was more than 400 meters and that from which signals from internal ice were received was about 200 meters. Such performances are suitable for generating data that can be used for detailed comparison between ice core analysis and radar data. This radar is expected to be an effective tool for revealing the three-dimensional extension of event-layer in the ice core and to give information about the scattering mechanism of internal echoes.

  • Target Distance and Velocity Measurement Algorithm to Reduce False Targets in FMCW Automotive Radar

    A Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar using only in-phase channel is advantageous for automotive applications. In this radar, it is necessary to search the pairs of beat frequencies in an up-chirp mode and a down-chirp mode to measure the distances and the velocity of multiple targets similarly to a FMCW radar with both of in-phase and quadrature-phase channel. However the number of combinations to search the pairs is larger than that for the FMCW radar with both of in-phase and quadrature-phase channel. Therefore, false targets by mistaking the combination of these pairs increase. In this paper, we propose a novel measurement algorithm to reduce the false targets. We extract only the beat frequencies of the relatively moving targets using the differential frequency power spectrum of the up-chirp mode and the down-chirp mode. We can reduce the number of selected incorrect pairs by separating the stationary targets and the moving targets. We have conducted some simulations to confirm the capability of the proposed measurement algorithm. It was shown that the false target appearance probability is reduced without significant deterioration of the target detection probability.

  • Microstructure Analysis of Annealing Effect on CoCrPt Thin Film Media by XRD

    Post annealing treatment for CoCrPt magnetic thin films were tried in different thermal conditions, by changing the time of annealing procedure. Coercivity (Hc) improvement was achieved in annealed sample compared with those as deposited, in which as high as 5.2 kOe has been attained. To clarify the mechanism of annealing treatment on the magnetic properties, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectrums of those samples and their magnetic properties were carefully studied. Co and Cr lattice parameters were separately calculated from different crystal lattice plane. It was found that a axis lattice spacing of Co hexagonal structure increases monotonically with increased annealing time. Variation of Co hcp peaks significance may due to Cr or Pt redistribution in the crystal grains and its boundaries. Combined with the grain size analysis of Co-rich area by X-ray diffraction peak broaden width, which was not very consistent with the result obtained from other's TEM and AFM studies, Cr diffusion was suggested to be the governing factor at short annealing time region. Co-rich grain growth should also be applied to explain the variation of magnetic properties in longer post annealing.

  • Addition of SiO2 to Increase Coercivity and Squareness Ratio of Ba Ferrite Films for Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Media

    SiO2-added Ba ferrite (BaM:SiO2) films were prepared using BaFe12Si0.18Ox targets. BaM:SiO2 films exhibited perpendicular coercivity Hc⊥ of over 4.2 kOe and squareness ratio of 0.83, although saturation magnetization Ms decreased by about 15%. The angular dependence of coercivity Hc and remanent coercivity Hr were investigated to explain the magnetization reversal mechanism. Intergranular interactions in the films were also evaluated. The magnetization reversal mode of Ba ferrite films with and without SiO2 additives is not coherent rotation but appears to be the curling mode. The origin of the high coercivity of BaM:SiO2 films is different from that of Al-substituted Ba ferrite films. It seemed that SiO2 additives and the defects caused by them decreased Ms and prevented the expansion of reversed domains in the magnetization reversal process, similarly to some pinning effects, and caused high Hc⊥ of 4.2-5.1 kOe in BaM:SiO2 films.

  • Hierarchical Least-Squares Algorithm for Macromodeling High-Speed Interconnects Characterized by Sampled Data

    The interconnect analysis of on- and off-chips is very important in the design of high-speed signal processing, digital communication, and microwave electronic systems. When the interconnects are characterized by sampled data via electromagnetic analysis, the circuit-level simulation of the network requires rational approximation of the sampled data. Since the frequency band of the sampled data is more than 10 GHz, the rational function must fit into it at many frequency points. The rational function is approximated using the orthogonal least-squares method. With an increase in the number of the fitting data, the least-squares method suffers from a singularity problem. To avoid this, the sampled data are hierarchically approximated in this paper. Moreover, to reduce the computational cost of the circuit-level simulation, the parameter matrix of the interconnects is approximated by a rational matrix with one common denominator polynomial, and the selective orthogonalization procedure is presented.

    The purpose of this letter is to modify the correlation least mean squares algorithm using a sum of the lagged squared errors as the cost function and extend the modified CLMS algorithm to two-dimensional domain. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown by the computer simulation.

    A low bit-rate encoding method which yields a good performance in edge reconstruction while achieving a high compression is proposed through MTF function and the spatial anisotropy of human vision. Human visual weighting factors applied to sub-blocks within each subband in wavelet domain are produced by the spatial anisotropic-filter, then a good perceptual performance can be obtained.

    This paper describes how to generate, analyze and design a novel current-mode filter model using tunable multiple-output operational transconductance amplifiers and grounded capacitors (MO-OTA-Cs) for synthesizing both transmission poles and zeros. Transfer functions of low-order, high-order, general type, and special type are realized based on the filter model. The theory focuses mainly on establishing a relationship between the cascaded MO-OTA-Cs and the multiple-loop feedback matrix, which makes the structural generation and design formulas. Adopting the theory allows us to systematically generate many interesting new configurations along with some known structures. All the filter architectures contain only grounded capacitors, which can absorb parasitic capacitances and require smaller chip areas than floating ones. The paper also presents numerical design examples and simulation results to confirm the theoretical analysis.

    Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a powerful and non-invasive technique for measuring human brain activity with a high temporal resolution. The motivation for studying MEG data analysis is to extract the essential features from measured data and represent them corresponding to the human brain functions. In this paper, a novel MEG data analysis method based on independent component analysis (ICA) approach with pre-processing and post-processing multistage procedures is proposed. Moreover, several kinds of ICA algorithms are investigated for analyzing MEG single-trial data which is recorded in the experiment of phantom. The analyzed results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and high performance both in source decomposition by ICA approaches and source localization by equivalent current dipoles fitting method.
