In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for calculating the exact poles of the admittance matrix of RLCG interconnects. After choosing dominant poles and corresponding residues, each element of the exact admittance matrix is approximated by partial fraction. A procedure to obtain the residues that guarantee the passivity is also provided, based on experimental studies. In the procedure the residues are calculated by using the least squares method so that the partial fraction matches each element of the exact admittance matrix in the frequency-domain. From the partial fraction representation, the asymptotic equivalent circuit models which can be easily simulated with SPICE are synthesized. It is shown that an efficient model-order reduction is possible for short-length interconnects.

We have fabricated a multilayer structure for single flux quantum (SFQ) circuit application using a high-temperature superconductor (HTS). La0.2-Y0.9Ba1.9Cu3Ox (La-YBCO) base electrode layers were prepared by a dc or rf magnetron sputtering method. The reproducibility of film quality for dc-sputtered La-YBCO films was better than that for rf-sputtered films, and the dc sputtered films exhibited the average surface roughness Ra less than 1.0 nm and a Tc zero value of 88 K. By using the dc-sputtered La-YBCO films, a multilayer structure of SrSnO3/La-YBCO/SrSnO3/La-YBCO on MgO substrate with Ra below 2.0 nm was obtained. Interface-modified ramp-edge junctions with La0.2-Yb0.9Ba1.9Cu3Ox (La-YbBCO) counter electrodes have been fabricated by using this multilayer structure with dc-sputtered films. The fabricated junctions exhibited RSJ-type I-V characteristics with IcRn products of about 3 mV at 4.2 K. We also obtained a 1-σ Ic spread of 8% for a 1000-junction series-array. The sheet inductance values at 4.2 K for the base and counter electrodes on La-YBCO ground planes were 0.8 pH and 0.7 pH per square, respectively. Operation of several types of elementary SFQ circuits has been successfully demonstrated by using this multilayer structure.

We develop a method of dimensioning and managing the bandwidth of a link on which TCP flows from access links are aggregated. To do this, we extend the application of the processor-sharing queue model to TCP performance evaluation by using flow statistics. To handle various factors that affect actual TCP behavior, such as round-trip time, window-size, and restrictions other than access-link bandwidth, we extend the model by replacing the access-link bandwidth with the actual file-transfer speed of a flow when the aggregation link is not congested. We only use the number of active flows and the link utilization to estimate the file-transfer speed. Unlike previous studies, the extended model based on the actual transfer speed does not require any assumptions/predeterminations about file-size, packet-size, and round-trip times, etc. Using the extended model, we predict the TCP performance when the link utilization increases. We also show a method of dimensioning the bandwidth needed to maintain TCP performance. We show the effectiveness of our method through simulation analysis.
In this paper, we describe an accelerative current-programming method for active matrix OLED (AM-OLED) display. This new method uses common source configuration, "Acceleration Control" line and some mechanisms to prevent the programming current from flowing through OLED device. It would solve the basic problem of the current-programming pixel circuit: a long programming period, especially at the dark gray-level. The proposed method accelerates the current programming process at any gray levels, and it would be the solution for the problem.
The High Tc SQUID was used in an unshielded environment to make eddy current nondestructive testing measurement on a multi-layer aluminum structure. As a demonstration of their capabilities, subsurface defects in a multilayer aluminum structure have been located and mapped using phase shift with no magnetic shielding around the specimen.
Recently Azou et al. proposed a method of model reduction for discrete systems based on a new impulse response Gramian. The reduced model was derived by first approximating the low-order impulse response Gramian, and then matching some Markov parameters and time-moments of an original model. In this note a modified method is presented so that the reduced model exactly preserves the low-order impulse response Gramian together with a slightly different set of Markov parameters and time-moments of the original model.

Existence of a surface wave along the boundary between the semi-infinite materials, one of which is a free-space and the other is a material with either negative permeability or negative permittivity, is theoretically investigated. Surface waves exist in only limited combination of negative and positive signs of the material parameters. In addition, by analyzing the surface wave in a finite-thickness slab with negative permeability, its mode profile has been obtained for two different types of symmetry. From these results, the present paper predicts the possibility of a surface wave directional coupler based on a single slab transmission along its top and bottom surfaces.
This study was designed to evaluate localized muscular fatigue induced during mouse operation in a VDT task. Ten male undergraduates from 19 to 23 years old participated in the experiment. The subject performed a pointing task with a PC mouse for about 4 hours. The EMG measurements and psychological rating of fatigue were conducted before the experimental task and after each 30-minutes block during the experimental task. The changes in the Mean Power Frequency (MPF) and Percentage Maximum Voluntary Contraction (%MVC)-shift for the constant cumulative probability in the Amplitude Probability Distribution Function (APDF) with time were explored. The correspondence between the index (MPF or APDF) and the subjective rating of localized muscular fatigue was also examined. The performance was nearly constant across all blocks. The psychological rating of fatigue tended to increase with time. The MPF tended to increase with time, although the main effect of block (time) was not statistically significant. The %MVC-shift tended to increase with time. The correspondence with the perceived sensation of localized muscular fatigue was higher when using the %MVC-shift than when using the MPF. Based on the results, the effectiveness of the indexes used for evaluating localized muscular fatigue was discussed. The %MVC-shift obtained from the APDF was found to be a sensitive index of localized muscular fatigue and corresponded well with the subjective rating of localized muscular fatigue.
In this paper, an efficient architecture for an adaptive Reed-Solomon decoder is presented, where the block length n and the message length k can be varied from their minimum allowable values up to their selected values. This eliminates the need of inserting zeros before decoding shortened RS codes. And the error-correcting capability t can be changed adaptively to channel state at every codeword block. The decoder allows efficient decoding in both burst mode and continuous mode, and it permits 3-step pipelined processing based on the modified Euclid's algorithm. Each step in decoding is designed to be clocked by a separate clock. Thus, each step can be efficiently pipelined with no help of multiplexing. Also, it makes it possible to employ no additional buffer even when the decoder input and output clocks are different. The adaptive RS decoder over GF(28) having the error-correcting capability of upto 10 has been designed in VHDL, and successfully synthesized in an FPGA chip. It can be used in a wide range of applications because of its versatility.

This paper presents a new fast and robust circle extraction method that is capable of extracting circles from images with complicated backgrounds. It is not based on the Hough transform (HT) that requires a time-consuming voting process. The proposed method uses a least-squares circle fitting algorithm for extracting circles. The arcs are fitted by extended digital lines that are extracted by a fast line extraction method. The proposed method calculates accurate circle parameters using the fitted arcs instead of evidence histograms in the parameter space. Tests performed on various real-world images show that the proposed method quickly and accurately extracts circles from complicated and heavily corrupted images.

There is a possibility that individuals ingest contaminants that have been accidentally mixed with food because processed foods have become very common. Therefore a detection method of small contaminants in food and pharmaceuticals is required. High-Tc SQUID detection systems for metallic contaminants in foods and drugs have been developed for safety purposes. We developed two systems; one large system is for meat blocks and the other small system is for powdered drugs or packaged foods. Both systems consist of SQUID magnetometers, a permanent magnet for magnetization and a belt conveyor. All samples were magnetized before measurements and detected by high Tc SQUIDs. As a result, we successfully detected small syringe needles with a length of 2 mm in a meat block and a stainless steel ball as small as 0.3 mm in diameter.

This letter presents a speech watermarking scheme that is combined with CELP (Code Excited Linear Prediction) speech coding for speech authentication. The excitation codebook of CELP is partitioned into three parts and labeled '0', '1' and 'any' according to the private key. Watermark embedding process chooses the codebook whose label is the same as the watermark bit and combines it with the codebook labeled 'any' for CELP coding. A statistical method is employed to detect the watermark, and the watermark length for authentication and detection threshold are determined by false alarm probability and missed detection probability. The new codebook partition technique produces less distortion, and the statistical detection method guarantees that the error probability can be controlled under prescribed level.
Two methods using comparable corpora to select translation equivalents appropriate to a domain were devised and evaluated. The first method ranks translation equivalents of a target word according to similarity of their contexts to that of the target word. The second method ranks translation equivalents according to the ratio of associated words that suggest them. An experiment using the EDR bilingual dictionary together with Wall Street Journal and Nihon Keizai Shimbun corpora showed that the method using the ratio of associated words outperforms the method based on contextual similarity. Namely, in a quantitative evaluation using pseudo words, the maximum F-measure of the former method was 86%, while that of the latter method was 82%. The key feature of the method using the ratio of associated words is that it outputs selected translation equivalents together with representative associated words, enabling the translation equivalents to be validated.
We consider the edge-linking approach for accurate locating of moving object boundaries in video segmentation. We review the existing methods and propose a scheme designed for efficiency and better accuracy. The scheme first obtains a very rough outline of an object by a suitable means, e.g., change detection. It then forms a relatively compact image region that properly contains the object, through a procedure termed "mask sketch." Finally, the outermost edges in the region are found and linked via a shortest-path algorithm. Experiments show that the scheme yields good performance.

Over the last decade there has been a rapid growth of wireless communication technology. Among numerous wireless network architectures, the personal communication services (PCS) networks and wireless local area networks (WLAN) have attracted lots of attention. One of the core functionalities in wireless networks is the location service that provides location information for subscriber services, emergency services, and various mobile networks internal operations. In this paper, an integrated location management mechanism is proposed for heterogeneous wireless networks that combine PCS networks and WLAN. Three major functionalities in the integrated location management scheme are the determination of the WLAN connectivity for a mobile terminal, the development of a local area location scheme for WLAN, and the location prediction module for PCS networks. This mechanism not only determines the location of a mobile client more precisely, but also reduces the cost of locating. The performance evaluation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism for heterogeneous wireless networks.
In this letter, parallel interference cancellation (PIC) in code division multiple access (CDMA) was performed with two different structures by using a neural network (NN). In the first structure (receiver-1) the NN was used as a front-end stage of a one stage PIC circuit. In the second structure (receiver-2), the NN was used instead of the one stage PIC circuit and it was trained as a multiple access interference (MAI) detector to perform the PIC process by subtracting the MAI from the outputs of the matched filter. The PIC is a classical technique in multi user detection process and its bit error rate (BER) performance is not good in one stage for most of the applications. For improving its BER performance, generally a multi stage PIC which has the high computational complexity is used. In this study, we have gotten a better BER performance than a three stages PIC receiver with both proposed receivers that have the lower computational complexity.
This paper presents a novel method to speed up neural network (NN) based face detection systems. NN-based face detection can be viewed as a classification and search problem. The proposed method formulates the face search problem as an integer nonlinear optimization problem (INLP) and expands the basic particle swarm optimization (PSO) to handle it. PSO works with a population of particles, each representing a subwindow in an input image. The subwindows are evaluated by how well they match a NN based face filter. A face is indicated when the filter response of the best particle is above a given threshold. Experiments on a set of 42 test images show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Moreover, the effect of PSO parameter settings on the search performance was investigated.

In downlink MC-CDMA, orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) codes can be used to allow multirate communications while maintaining the orthogonality among the users with different data rates. In this paper, we point out that simple selection of the OVSF codes results in degraded performance. We show that this happens because simple code selection results in power concentration over certain consecutive subcarriers; severe power loss in the received signal occurs when these subcarriers experience a deep fade in a frequency selective fading channel. In addition, we show two effective techniques to avoid the performance degradation: random code selection and frequency interleaving; which technique provides a better performance depends on modulation level, code multiplexing order, and presence of channel coding.

This paper describes a new probabilistic sentence reduction method using maximum entropy model. In contrast to previous methods, the proposed method has the ability to produce multiple best results for a given sentence, which is useful in text summarization applications. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves on earlier methods in both accuracy and computation time.

Projection-based model reductions become a necessity for efficient interconnect modeling and simulations. In order to choose the order of the reduced system that can really reflect the essential dynamics of the original interconnect, the residual error of the transfer function can be considered as a stopping criteria to terminate the Arnoldi iteration process. Analytical expressions of this residual error are derived in detail. Furthermore, it can be found that the approximate transfer function can also be expressed as the original interconnect model with some additive perturbations. The perturbation matrix only involves resultant vectors at the previous step of the Arnoldi algorithm. These error information will provide a guideline for the order selection scheme used in the Krylov subspace model-order algorithm.
