  • Fault Analysis of the NTRUEncrypt Cryptosystem

    In this paper, we present a fault analysis of the original NTRU public key cryptosystem. The fault model in which we analyze the cipher is the one in which the attacker is assumed to be able to fault a small number of coefficients of the polynomial input to (or output from) the second step of the decryption process but cannot control the exact location of injected faults. For this specific original instantiation of the NTRU encryption system with parameters (N,p,q), our attack succeeds with probability≈ and when the number of faulted coefficients is upper bounded by t, it requires O((pN)t) polynomial inversions in Z/p Z[x]/(xN-1).

    This paper presents a novel dynamic subchannel allocation scheme that can improve the cell capacity by coordinating the intercell interference (ICI) in a cellular orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) system. The proposed scheme mitigates the ICI by adopting the virtual cell concept and improves the frequency reuse factor through subchannel reuse among different virtual cells. In particular, each virtual cell is assigned a primary and a secondary subchannel group, and each sector base station (BSs) allocates the subchannel resulting in the least ICI in probability out of the candidate subchannels to the mobile stations, dynamically searching from its primary group and then secondary group. In addition, an optional use of pico-cell overlay at the intersection of the virtual cells is also proposed to enhance the fairness of the proposed scheme with the BS-MS distance. Through computer simulation, it is shown that the proposed scheme has the advantages of improved cell capacity and fairness compared to the conventional schemes.

  • 3D Face Landmarking Method under Pose and Expression Variations

    A robust method is presented for 3D face landmarking with facial pose and expression variations. This method is based on Multi-level Partition of Unity (MPU) Implicits without relying on texture, pose, orientation and expression information. The MPU Implicits reconstruct 3D face surface in a hierarchical way. From lower to higher reconstruction levels, the local shapes can be reconstructed gradually according to their significance. For 3D faces, three landmarks, nose, left eyehole and right eyehole, can be detected uniquely with the analysis of curvature features at lower levels. Experimental results on GavabDB database show that this method is invariant to pose, holes, noise and expression. The overall performance of 98.59% is achieved under pose and expression variations.

    A millimeter-wave termination which is tolerant to the resistance error of the embedded resistive film in a multi-layered LTCC substrate has been developed. The tolerance to the resistance error can be accomplished using two bifurcated strip lines overlapping with the resistive film, whose lengths are different form each other. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the proposed termination configuration is effective to enhance the tolerance to resistance error of the embedded resistive film in the LTCC substrate.

    In order to accelerate yield improvement in semiconductor manufacturing, it is important to prevent the root causes of product-specific failures, such as systematic defects and parametric defects, which are different for each product. We herein propose a method for the investigation of product-specific failures by estimating differences between the actual failing bit signatures (FBSs) and the predicted FBSs caused by random defects. In order to estimate these differences accurately, we have developed a novel algorithm by which to extract the critical area for each FBS. The total failure rate errors of FBSs are within 0.5% for embedded SRAMs. The proposed method identified the root causes of product-specific failures in 150 and 65 nm technology node products.

    Speeded up robust features (SURF) can detect scale- and rotation-invariant features at high speed by relying on integral images for image convolutions. However, since the number of image convolutions greatly increases in proportion to the image size, another method for reducing the time for detecting features is required. In this letter, we propose a method, called ordinal convolution, of reducing the number of image convolutions for fast feature detection in SURF and compare it with a previous method based on sparse sampling.

    Per-flow unfairness of TCP throughput in the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) environment has been reported in past literature. A number of researchers have proposed various methods for alleviating the unfairness; most require modification of MAC protocols or queue management mechanisms in access points. However, the MAC protocols of access points are generally implemented at hardware level, so changing these protocols is costly. As the first contribution of this paper, we propose a transport-layer solution for alleviating unfairness among TCP flows, requiring a small modification to TCP congestion control mechanisms only on WLAN stations. In the past literature on fairness issues in the Internet flows, the performance of the proposed solutions for alleviating the unfairness has been evaluated separately from the network bandwidth utilization, meaning that they did not consider the trade-off relationships between fairness and bandwidth utilization. Therefore, as the second contribution of this paper, we introduce a novel performance metric for evaluating trade-off relationships between per-flow fairness and bandwidth utilization at the network bottleneck. We confirm the fundamental characteristics of the proposed method through simulation experiments and evaluate the performance of the proposed method through experiments in real WLAN environments. We show that the proposed method can achieve better a trade-off between fairness and bandwidth utilization, regardless of vendor implementations of wireless access points and wireless interface cards.

  • Preliminary Study of Performance Evaluation of Adaptive Scan with Wide-Band Noise Modulation for Spaceborne Rain Radar Based on Simulation

    Wide-band noise modulation is added to the adaptive scan technique for spaceborne rain radar. The performance of this technique is studied by simulation using one month of TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) Precipitation Radar (PR) data from the viewpoints of improving the sensitivity and reducing power consumption. The results show that the adaptive scan technique with wide-band noise modulation uses about 25% less energy than the conventional scanning technique. The adaptive scan using wide-band noise modulation is more effective than that using a normal pulse for localized rainy areas. Surface data as well as rainfall data can be obtained by using the adaptive scan using wide-band noise modulation.

    Recently, to track and relate news documents from several sources, association rule mining has been applied due to its performance and scalability. This paper presents an empirical investigation on how term representation basis, term weighting, and association measure affects the quality of relations discovered among news documents. Twenty four combinations initiated by two term representation bases, four term weightings, and three association measures are explored with their results compared to human judgment of three-level relations: completely related, somehow related, and unrelated relations. The performance evaluation is conducted by comparing the top-k results of each combination to those of the others using so-called rank-order mismatch (ROM). The experimental results indicate that a combination of bigram (BG), term frequency with inverse document frequency (TFIDF) and confidence (CONF), as well as a combination of BG, TFIDF and conviction (CONV), achieves the best performance to find the related documents by placing them in upper ranks with 0.41% ROM on top-50 mined relations. However, a combination of unigram (UG), TFIDF and lift (LIFT) performs the best by locating irrelevant relations in lower ranks (top-1100) with 9.63% ROM. A detailed analysis on the number of the three-level relations with regard to their rankings is also performed in order to examine the characteristic of the resultant relations. Finally, a discussion and an error analysis are given.

    This paper proposes an efficient combination of state likelihood recycling and batch state likelihood calculation for accelerating acoustic likelihood calculation in an HMM-based speech recognizer. Recycling and batch calculation are each based on different technical approaches, i.e. the former is a purely algorithmic technique while the latter fully exploits computer architecture. To accelerate the recognition process further by combining them efficiently, we introduce conditional fast processing and acoustic backing-off. Conditional fast processing is based on two criteria. The first potential activity criterion is used to control not only the recycling of state likelihoods at the current frame but also the precalculation of state likelihoods for several succeeding frames. The second reliability criterion and acoustic backing-off are used to control the choice of recycled or batch calculated state likelihoods when they are contradictory in the combination and to prevent word accuracies from degrading. Large vocabulary spontaneous speech recognition experiments using four different CPU machines under two environmental conditions showed that, compared with the baseline recognizer, recycling and batch calculation, our combined acceleration technique further reduced both of the acoustic likelihood calculation time and the total recognition time. We also performed detailed analyses to reveal each technique's acceleration and environmental dependency mechanisms by classifying types of state likelihoods and counting each of them. The analysis results comfirmed the effectiveness of the combined acceleration technique.

    This paper presents the loss factors in the post-wall waveguide-fed parallel-plate slot array antenna in the millimeter-wave band. At first, transmission loss is evaluated per unit length by measuring the losses of post-wall waveguides on various substrates with different thicknesses in different bands. Measured results of the frequency dependence agree with theoretical predictions using the effective conductivity and the complex permittivity obtained by the whispering gallery mode resonator method. Then the authors evaluate the antennas with various sizes at 76.5 GHz. The antenna efficiency is evaluated by taking into account the loss factors related to: the transmission loss both in the feed and the parallel plate waveguides, the aperture efficiency and the insertion loss and the reflection of the transition. Also, the loss due to the locally-perturbed currents by the slot radiation is evaluated. The sum of the losses in the prediction quantitatively agrees with the measurement.

    Providing mobile services that ensure user satisfaction is one of the most crucial issues for telecommunication carriers and service providers. Traditionally, user satisfaction with the service, i.e., the Quality of Experience (QoE), has been assessed in a laboratory by using elaborate network systems and customized terminals. However, reliable QoE for a target mobile service in the context of actual use cannot be obtained by laboratory experiment, since QoE can be affected by a variety of factors such as environmental conditions and the mental state of the user. This paper proposes a novel Web script-based field evaluation method designed to ascertain user satisfaction with mobile services. The proposed method has the following practical advantages. Since experimental conditions, especially communication conditions, can be simulated with a Web script, such as FlashLite, a subjective assessment can be conducted anywhere using the mobile terminal of the participant. Thus, QoE for a target mobile service in the field can easily be obtained.

    This work extends the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection methodology to detection in the presence of two independent interference sources with unknown powers. The proposed detector is analyzed on the assumption that clutter and jammer covariance structures are known and have relatively low rank properties. The limited-dimensional subspace-based approach leads to a robust false alarm rate (RFAR) detector. The RFAR detection algorithm is developed by an adaptation and extension of Hotelling's principal-component method. The detector performance loss and false alarm stability loss to unknown clutter and jammer powers have been evaluated for example scenario.

    To further suppress the multiple-access interference (MAI) in frequency-hopping multiple-access (FHMA) system, a novel kind of FH sequence set named as no-hit-zone (NHZ) sequence, is proposed for an FHMA system with M-ary FSK modulation (MFSK/FHMA) in this paper. Expressions for the decision variables are derived for the asynchronous MFSK/FHMA system with NHZ sequence set (MFSK/FHMA-NHZ) under a slow Rayleigh-fading channel model. For the special case of M=2, accurate analytic bit error rate (BER) is derived as a function of maximum relative delay D and the number of users K by a characteristic function method. The theoretical results validated by Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the dependence of the average BER on D and K. Comparison with the MFSK/FHMA system with Markov hit pattern (MFSK/FHMA-Markov) shows that MFSK/FHMA-NHZ system performs better than Markov hit pattern system as long as D is restricted in a certain range and further, the gain in the performance increases with increase in the value of K.

    The purpose of this work is to synthesize a three-dimension C60 polymer using photo-polymerization method. The used pristine materials were C60 precipitates prepared by a liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation (LLIP) method. The prepared LLIP material was set in the vacuum and was compressed in the anvil with the pressure of 600 MPa or 7 GPa. The 4th harmonics FEL with the wavelength of 500 nm was irradiated with macro-pulses (the pulse width of 20 µs) containing very short micro-pulses (the pulse width of 200 fs). The Raman Ag(2) peak of C60 molecules in the vicinity of 1469 cm-1 becomes broad and shifts to the lower energy region as proceeding of polymerization. Under high pressure and/or FEL irradiation the LLIP crystal revealed the large red-shift and the increment of the half width of the Raman Ag(2) peak. Furthermore the LLIP crystal mixture with iodine revealed the more distinctive red-shift, ca.13cm-1 because of highly packing of C60 molecules. The C60 molecular accession by LLIP process and/or the photo-assisted hole-doping from iodine were promising conditions to promote the photo-polymerization effectively.

    In situ observation of the adsorption process and the states of cytochrome c on glass/solution interfaces, and the functionality of the reduction reaction of adsorbed cytochorome c were performed by using slab optical waveguide (SOWG) spectroscopy. The peak position of the absorption band of cytochorome c adsorbed on a bare glass surface was almost the same as that of that in solution. The cytochorome c adsorbed on glass/solution interface was reduced by sodium dithionite solution. The adsorbed cytochorome c was still maintained its functionality after immobilization.

    This letter presents structurally simpler symbol error rate (SER) expressions for Transmit Antenna Selection/Maximal-Ratio Combining (TAS/MRC) scheme in independent Nakagami-m fading channels in a comparison with those in the literature. First, the SER is derived as a single infinite series of simple functions for arbitrary m. For integer m, the SER can be attained as a closed-form expression with a double finite series. Moreover, simple asymptotic SER expressions suggest that the TAS/MRC scheme can achieve a full diversity order at high SNR. Numerical and simulation results verify the conciseness of the derived expressions.

    Over the recent years, a great deal of effort has been made to estimate age from face images. It has been reported that age can be accurately estimated under controlled environment such as frontal faces, no expression, and static lighting conditions. However, it is not straightforward to achieve the same accuracy level in a real-world environment due to considerable variations in camera settings, facial poses, and illumination conditions. In this paper, we apply a recently proposed machine learning technique called covariate shift adaptation to alleviating lighting condition change between laboratory and practical environment. Through real-world age estimation experiments, we demonstrate the usefulness of our proposed method.

  • Post-Routing Double-Via Insertion for X-Architecture Clock Tree Yield Improvement

    As the VLSI manufacturing technology shrinks to 65 nm and below, reducing the yield loss induced by via failures is a critical issue in design for manufacturability (DFM). Semiconductor foundries highly recommend using the double-via insertion (DVI) method to improve yield and reliability of designs. This work applies the DVI method in the post-stage of an X-architecture clock routing for double-via insertion rate improvement. The proposed DVI-X algorithm constructs the bipartite graphs of the partitioned clock routing layout with single vias and redundant-via candidates (RVCs). Then, DVI-X applies the augmenting path approach associated with the construction of the maximal cliques to obtain the matching solution from the bipartite graphs. Experimental results on benchmarks show that DVI-X can achieve higher double-via insertion rate by 3% and less running time by 68% than existing works. Moreover, a skew tuning technique is further applied to achieve zero skew because the inserted double vias affect the clock skew.

    The purpose of this study was to clarify whether viewers can perceive a digitally deteriorated image while pursuing a speedily moving digitally compressed image. We studied the perception characteristics of false contours among the various digital deteriorations for the four types of displays i.e. CRT, PDP, EL, LCD by changing the gradation levels and the speed of moving image as parameters. It is known that 8 bits is not high enough resolution for still images, and it is assumed that 8 bits is also not enough for an image moving at less than 5 deg/sec since the tracking accuracy of smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) is very high for a target moving at less than 5 deg/sec. Given these facts, we focused on images moving at more than 5 deg/sec. In our results, the images deteriorated by a false contour at a gradation level less than 32 were perceived by every subject at almost all velocities, from 5 degrees/sec to 30 degrees/sec, for all four types of displays we used. However, the perception rate drastically decreased when the gradation levels reached 64, with almost no subjects detecting deterioration for gradation levels more than 64 at any velocity. Compared to other displays, LCDs yielded relatively high recognition rates for gradation levels of 64, especially at lower velocities.
