  • Reliability of a 3-State System Subject to Flow Quantity Constraint

    This paper presents two approaches for computing the reliability of complex networks subject to two kinds of failure, open failure and shorted failure. The reliabilities of some series-parallel networks are considered by many analysts. However a practical system is more complex. The methods given in this paper can be applied not only to a series-parallel network but also to a non-series-parallel network which is composed of non-identical and independent components subject to two kinds of failure. This paper also deals with a network subject to flow quantity constraint such as the one which is required to control j or more separate paths. For such a system it is difficult to obtain system reliability because the number of states to be considered in this system is extremely large compared to a conventional 2-state device system. In this paper we obtain the reliabilities for such systems by a combinatorial approach and by a simulation approach.

    This paper describes the effective countermeasures for exfoliation of large-sized ceramic capacitors, deterioration of dummy resistors and developement of a spark sensor with UVtrons at 300-500 kW transmitting stations. Cracks and exfoliation were found at the electrode of large-sized ceramic capacitors in the output circuit of the 500 kW transmitter. The exfoliation was caused by the temperature rise and the thermal fatigues at the electrode with the Nickel plating including Irons. A pure Nickel-plated electrode including no Irons and a new soldering method using disk-typed solder with a large adhesive area are employed in order to reduce the temperature rise. The temperature rise of the improved capacitor was 18 lower than the conventional one. Deterioration of ELEMA resistors of the 300 kW dummy antenna was discovered. The damage of the resistor was caused by the concentration of the electric current followed by the thermal stress cycle which made mechanical exhaustion at the electrode. Therefore, oval-shaped type resistors with much longer electric current path (20% up) to suppress the concentration of current flow and much slower temperature rise are newly developed. In case that sparks occurred at DC or RF high voltage impressed sections of the high power transmitting equipment, the discharged points could be seriously damaged by the transmitter energy itself. In orded to prevent this, a spark detector using UV (Ultra violet) trons is developed and installed at the matchign circuit of the 500 kW transmitter. Conventional UV sensors with only one UVtron could not detect feeble discharges and sparks with a duration time of less than 150 ms because of false outputs by the back ground noise. Since choosing three out of four UV trons system is employed, possibility producing a false output will be just one to 445 years theoretically. This means extremely reliable and sensitive spark detection system are constructed. These countermeasures have improved reliability of the transmitting equipment greatly. No damages have been found in the transmitters ever since.

    Finding DC solutions of nonlinear networks is one of the most difficult tasks in circuit simulation, and many circuit designers experience difficulties in finding DC solutions using Newton's method. Piecewise-linear analysis has been studied to overcome this difficulty. However, efficient piecewiselinear algorithms have not been proposed for nonlinear resistive networks containing the Gummel-Poon models or the Shichman-Hodges models. In this paper, a new piecewise-linear algorithm is presented for solving nonlinear resistive networks containing these sophisticated transistor models. The basic idea of the algorithm is to exploit the special structure of the nonlinear network equations, namely, the pairwise-separability. The proposed algorithm is globally convergent and much more efficient than the conventional simplical-type piecewise-linear algorithms.

    In this paper, we propose a plausible software reliability growth model by applying a mathematical technique of stochastic differential equations. First, we extend a basic differential equation describing the average behavior of software fault-detection processes during the testing phase to a stochastic differential equation of ItÔ type, and derive a probability distribution of its solution processes. Second, we obtain several software reliability measures from the probability distribution. Finally, applying a method of maximum-likelihood we estimate unknown parameters in our model by using available data in the actual software testing procedures, and numerically show the stochastic behavior of the number of faults remaining in the software system. Further, the model is compared among the existing software reliability growth models in terms of goodness-of-fit.

    This paper proposes a high-speed VP bandwidth control scheme for ATM networks that utilizes a distributed control mechanism. First, the characteristics of VPs are compared with those of digital paths in STM networks. A distributed control scheme is adopted for rapid control. The basic elements and the necessary distributed function, the control algorithm, and the message transmission mechanism, are elucidated. The bandwidth alteration time with the proposed algorithm is estimated by considering network element processing and queuing delay. The proposed VP bandwidth control scheme can be applied to both public networks and leased line services. Finally, this paper focuses on its application to leased line services, and discusses the resource reduction effects of the proposed scheme.

    Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) is an important measure of practical repairable systems, but it has not been obtained for a repairable linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system. We first present a general formula for the (steady-state) availability of a repairable linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system with nonidentical components by employing the cut set approach or a topological availability method. Second, we present a general formula for frequency of system failures of a repairable linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system with nonidentical components. Then the MTBF for the repairable linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system is shown by using the frequency of system failure and availability. Lastly, we derive some figures which show the relationship between the MTBF and repair rate µorρ(=λ/µ) in the repairable linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system. The figures can be easily used and are useful for reliability design.

  • The Coded Tone Sense Protocol for Multihop Spread Spectrum Packet Radio Networks

    In Spread Spectrum Packet Radio Networks (SS/PRNs), different spreading codes are required for different stations for transmitting packets. Therefore multihop SS/PRNs with a large number of stations would require a large number of codes and hence a large channel bandwidth. In this paper we design a code assignment algorithm which could reduce the number of codes required to about 22%. Further reducing the number of codes is found to cause little throughput degradation. The Coded Tone Sense protocol is designed for using these codes in multihop PRNs. Simulation result shows that in a 80 node network using only 5 spreading codes, the maximum network throughput is about 73% higher than the BTMA protocol.

  • A Pattern Synthesis Method for Multibeam Reflector Antennas

    A new pattern synthesis method for multibeam reflector antennas is described. The Directional Constrained Minimum Power (DCMP) method, which was developed as an adaptive array algorithm, has been applied to reflector antennas with cluster feeds. The main objective of this pattern synthesis is to optimize the excitation distribution of the cluster primary feed in order to reduce the sidelobe level and to attain a high main beam gain. A desired contour beam pattern has also been attained by modifying this method. Furthermore, this paper describes other applications of this method, such as pattern optimization taking account of the frequency characteristics and the change in the radiation pattern due to an antenna pointing system, cross-polarization reduction, and monopulse pattern synthesis for an RF sensor.

    We propose an optical computing architecture called pure optical parall array logic system (P-OPALS) as an instance of sophisticated optical computing system. On the P-OPALS, high density images can be processed in parallel using the optical system with high resolving power. We point out problems on the way to develop the P-OPALS and propose logical foundation of the P-OPALS called single-input optical array logic (S-OAL) as a solution of those problems. Based on the proposed architecture, an experimental system of the P-OPALS is constructed by using three optical techniques: birefringent encoding, selectable discrete correlator, and birefringent decoding. To show processing capability of the P-OPALS, some basic parallel operations are demonstrated. The results obtained indicate that image consisting of 300 100 pixels can be processed in parallel on the experimental P-OPALS. Finally, we estimate potential capability of the P-OPALS.

    In 1963, the authors began to develop a tuning circuit (hereafter referred to as the 'circuit') consisting of an inductor, fixed capacitors and a variable capacitor. The circuit required very high accuracy and stability, and the aging influence on resonant frequency needed to be Δf/f0 0.12% for 20 years. When we started, there was no methodology available for designing such a long-term stable circuit, so we reinvestigated our previous studies concerning aging characteristics and formed a design concept. We designed the circuit by bearing in mind that an inductor was subject to natural and stress demagnetization (as indicated by disaccommodation), and assumed that a capacitor changed its characteristics linearly over a logarithmic scale of time. (This assumption was based on short-term test results derived from previous studies.) We measured the aging characteristics of the circuits at room temperature for 20 years, from 1966. The measurement results from the 20-year study revealed that the aging characteristics predicted by the design concept were reasonably accurate.

  • A Sign Test for Finding All Solutions of Piecewise-Linear Resistive Circuits

    An efficient algorithm is presented for finding all solutions of piecewise-linear resistive circuits. In this algorithm, a simple sign test is performed to eliminate many linear regions that do not contain a solution. This makes the number of simultaneous linear equations to be solved much smaller. This test, in its original form, is applied to each linear region; but this is time-consuming because the number of linear regions is generally very large. In this paper, it is shown that the sign test can be applied to super-regions consisting of adjacent linear regions. Therefore, many linear regions are discarded at the same time, and the computational efficiency of the algorithm is substantially improved. The branch-and-bound method is used in applying the sign test to super-regions. Some numerical examples are given, and it is shown that all solutions are computed very rapidly. The proposed algorithm is simple, efficient, and can be easily programmed.

    This paper discusses the design of an ITS to realize a load-oriented tutoring to enhance the student's explanation understanding. In the explanation understanding, it is to be hoped that a student not only memorizes the new information from an explanation, but also relates the acquired information with his/her own knowledge to recognize what it means. This relating process can be viewed as the one in which the student structures his/her knowledge with the explanation. In our ITS, we regard the knowledge-structuring activities as the explanation understanding. In this paper, we propose an explanation, called a load-oriented explanation, with the intention of applying a load to the student's knowledge-structuring activities purposefully. If the proper load is applied, the explanation can induce the student to think by himself/herself. Therefore he/she will have a chance of gaining the deeper understanding. The important point toward the load-oriented explanation generation is to control the load heaviness appropriately, which a student will bear in understanding the explanation. This requires to estimate how an explanation promotes the understanding activities and how much the load is applied to the activities. In order to provide ITS with the estimation, we have built an Explanation Effect Model, EEM for short. Our ITS consists of an explanation planner and a self-explanation environment. The planner generates the load-oriented explanation based on EEM. The system also makes a student explain the explanation understanding process to himself/herself. Such self-explanation is useful to let the student be conscious of the necessity of structuring his/her knowledge with the explanation. The self-explanation environment supports the student's self-explanation. Furthermore, if the student reaches an impasse in self-explaining, the planner can generate the supporting explanation for the impasse.

    A transmission data format for high-speed optical parallel interconnections is proposed and a 4-channel transmitter and receiver link module operating at up to 1.2 Gb/s per channel is demonstrated. The data format features "Group Multiplexing and Coding." In this scheme, input several tens channels are multiplexed and coded in group into reduced channels, resulting in burst-mode compatible, skew-free transmission, and low power-consumption of a link module. Experiments with fabricated modules comfirm that our data coding in multichannel optical transmission is promising for use in high-speed interconnections in information and switching systems.

    It has been 15 years since we started producing the electric double-layer capacitors (also known as Super Capacitor) in 1978. Over the years we have introduced improvements that increased reliability and increased life. For example, after subjecting capacitors manufactured in 1984 and 1990 to load life tests (70, 5.5 V) for 2,000 hours, we discovered that the rate of change in capacitance (ΔC/C) of capacitors manufactured in 1990 was less than one-half that of capacitors manufactured in 1984. This shows that we have successfully increased the life of our electric double-layer capacitors. We conducted investigations regarding factors that contribute to volume of the electrolyte solution and better sealing properties. In the load life test, we observed that when the ratio of the weights of the electrolyte solution and the powdered activated carbon (hereinafter referred to as LB) was increased, the time it took before ΔC/C reached -30% was lengthened. This means that increasing LB also increases life. Furthermore, we also observed that when the gas permeability rate of the collector's rubber material was decreased in the load life test (70, 5.5 V), the time it took befor (ΔC/C) reached -30% was longer. Therefore life is dependent on the gas permeability rate (sealing property) of the collector rubber.

    This paper describes the use of optical interconnections in switching systems and discusses our recent achievements in this area. Switching system interconnections are classified based on their application layers. The evolution of optical interconnections in switching systems in discussed in terms of such system requirements as cost, size, and throughput. Recent achievements are discussed: an optical inter-module connector, a free-space digital switch, and a large-capacity optically intra-connected ATM switch.

  • Effects of Integration Time on Rain Attenuation Statistics at 20GHz

    By using measured attenuation time-series data over 2 years at 19.5GHz with an integration time of 1 sec, effects of the integration time on attenuation statistics are presented. It is observed that the effect on cumulative distribution of attenuation and the relation between annual and the worst-month cumulative time percentages are not significant for the practical prediction purposes. The effect is significant in attenuation duration statistics.

    This paper describes an error-correcting parser (ec-parser) for context-free languages that is an extension of the Leiss's parser. Since the ec-parser uses precomputed informations and a pruning technique by lookahead, the ec-parser is always faster than the Lyon's parser. Several examples are shown.

  • A Superresolution Technique for Antenna Pattern Measurements

    A new superresolution technique is proposed for antenna pattern measurements. Unwanted reflected signals often impinge on the antenna when we measure it outdoors. A time-domain superresolution technique (a MUSIC algorithm) has been proposed to eliminate the unwanted signal for a narrow pass-band antenna. The MUSIC algorithm needs many snapshots to obtain a correlation matrix. This is not preferable for antenna pattern measurements because it takes a long time to obtain the data. In this paper, we propose to reduce a noise component (stochastic quantity) using the FFT and gating techniques before we apply the MUSIC. The new technique needs a few snapshots and saves the measurement time.

    A best-fit panel model in the radio holographic metrology taking into account locations and sizes of actual surface panels in a large reflector antenna is presented. A displacement and tilt of each panel can be estimated by introducing the best-fit panel model. It was confirmed by simulations that the distinction can be drawn between a continuous surface error and a discontinuous one. Errors due to truncation of the radiation pattern were calculated by simulations. It was found that a measurement of a 128128 map is optimum for the 45-m telescope. The reliability of the measurements using this model was examined by experiments with panel displacements. Panel adjustments using the best-fit panel model successfully improved the surface accuracy of the antenna from 138µm rms to 84µm rms (/D=210-6).

  • Effect of Dimension of Conducting Box on Radiation Pattern of a Monopole Antenna for Portable Telephone

    The relation between the radiation pattern and the dimension of the conducting box for a portable telephone is illustrated both theoretically and experimentally. The Galerkin-moment method using the Fourier series expansion for the surface current of the conducting box, which has a great advantage of having a high accuracy, is employed to obtain the radiation pattern. As an example of antennas, a quarter-wavelength monopole antenna having a sinusoidal current distribution is used. As a result, it is pointed out that the radiation pattern of a monopole antenna mounted on the box tends to tilt in a lower direction both in theory and in experiment as well. The relation between the radiation pattern and the location of the monopole antenna is also described. An asymmetrical, or distorted pattern is observed when the monopole antenna moves away from the center of the top plane.
