    In this paper, we propose a new joint transmit and receive spatial/frequency-domain filtering for single-carrier (SC) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) eigenmode transmission using iterative interference cancellation (IC). Iterative IC is introduced to a previously proposed joint transmit and receive spatial/frequency-domain filtering based on minimum mean square error criterion (called joint Tx/Rx MMSE filtering) to reduce the residual inter-symbol interference (ISI) after the Rx filtering. The optimal Tx/Rx filters are derived based on the MMSE criterion taking into account the iterative IC. The superiority of our proposed technique is confirmed by computer simulation.

    In the development of inter-vehicle communication systems for the prevention of car crashes, it is important to know radio propagation characteristics at blind intersections. In field experiments and numerical simulations to investigate radio propagation characteristics, a half wavelength dipole antenna is assumed to be the wave source in many cases. However, a directivity of car antenna is changed by the effect of both car body and antenna position on car. In this paper, path loss characteristics considering antenna positions on car body at a blind intersection in urban area for inter-vehicle communications using 700MHz band are investigated. Additionally, simplified car models are proposed for the efficient analysis of radio propagation. Here, the hybrid method using both FDTD and ray-tracing methods is used for the radio propagation analysis.

  • Method of Audio Watermarking Based on Adaptive Phase Modulation

    This paper proposes a method of watermarking for digital audio signals based on adaptive phase modulation. Audio signals are usually non-stationary, i.e., their own characteristics are time-variant. The features for watermarking are usually not selected by combining the principle of variability, which affects the performance of the whole watermarking system. The proposed method embeds a watermark into an audio signal by adaptively modulating its phase with the watermark using IIR all-pass filters. The frequency location of the pole-zero of an IIR all-pass filter that characterizes the transfer function of the filter is adapted on the basis of signal power distribution on sub-bands in a magnitude spectrum domain. The pole-zero locations are adapted so that the phase modulation produces slight distortion in watermarked signals to achieve the best sound quality. The experimental results show that the proposed method could embed inaudible watermarks into various kinds of audio signals and correctly detect watermarks without the aid of original signals. A reasonable trade-off between inaudibility and robustness could be obtained by balancing the phase modulation scheme. The proposed method can embed a watermark into audio signals up to 100 bits per second with 99% accuracy and 6 bits per second with 94.3% accuracy in the cases of no attack and attacks, respectively.

    Although many 3D structures have been solved for proteins to date, functions of some proteins remain unknown. To predict protein functions, comparison of local structures of proteins with pre-defined model structures, whose functions have been elucidated, is widely performed. For the comparison, the root mean square deviation (RMSD) has been used as a conventional index. In this work, adaptive deviation was incorporated, along with Bregmann Divergence Regularized Machine, in order to detect analogous local structures with such model structures more effectively than the conventional index.

  • A Method for Creating Package Images that Reflect Consumer Taste Impressions

    Product packaging is a significant factor in a buyer's purchasing decision. We have developed a method for creating package images reflecting consumers' taste impressions that balances the need to provide product information and the need to motivate purchasing. It uses a database showing the correspondence between adjectives and colors as extracted from consumer reviews. This correspondence is used to revise the colors in the original package image. Evaluation was done by having 40 participants drink target beverages and answer questions before and after drinking regarding their impressions of the taste and their desire to drink the beverage. The results revealed that displaying appropriately revised images reduced the gap between the expected taste when viewing the image and the actual taste. Displaying appropriately revised images should motivate purchasing decisions as well as increase product satisfaction.

    In this paper, a method of calculating the mean channel capacity based on S-parameter of MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) antenna is proposed. This method exploits the correlation matrix calculated from the antenna S-parameter matrix, and offers highly accurate estimates of the mean channel capacity without dependence on SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). The numerical and experimental results revealed that the proposed method can calculate the channel capacity with fair accuracy independent of the number and spacing of the antenna elements if the radiation efficiency is sufficiently high.

    It has been reported that a left-handed waveguide can be constituted using cutoff TE10 mode of rectangular waveguide. Because the cutoff TE10 mode shows effectively negative permittivity, the left-handed mode propagates by adding series capacitance in the form of short- or open-stubs. This paper suggests a constitution method of left-handed waveguides using cutoff TM mode. In this case, the cutoff TM mode shows effectively negative permeability. Therefore, a left-handed waveguide can be constituted by adding parallel inductance. In this paper, two types of the left-handed waveguides are designed using circular TM01 mode and rectangular TM11 mode, and the dispersion characteristics are numerically investigated. The validity of the constituting principle is confirmed by an experiment.

    A novel directional coupler loaded with feedback capacitances on the coupled lines is presented. Its effect of enhancing the coupling is qualitatively shown by deriving an equation for the coupling. Besides, a method to compensate for the phase difference between the even and odd modes of the coupler is presented. To demonstrate, a novel tandem 3-dB coupler consisting of the proposed coupled lines is designed and described. In addition, a waveguide (rectangular coaxial line) 8×8 HYB matrix using planar double-layer structure that is composed of the proposed tandem 3-dB couplers and branch-line couplers, which is operated in S-band, is designed and fabricated showing excellent performance.

    The sliding discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is a well-known algorithm for obtaining a few frequency components of the DFT spectrum with a low computational cost. However, the conventional sliding DFT cannot be applied to practical conditions, e.g., using the sine window and the zero-padding DFT, with preserving the computational efficiency. This paper discusses the extension of the sliding DFT to such cases. Expressing the window function by complex sinusoids, a recursive algorithm for computing a frequency component of the DFT spectrum using an arbitrary sinusoidal window function is derived. The algorithm can be easily extended to the zero-padding DFT. Computer simulations using very long signals show the validity of our algorithm.

    In this paper, we present a weighted-polarization wearable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna that is based on radio-frequency (RF) signal processing to realize ultra-high-speed and high-capacity mobile communications. The proposed antenna is comprised of three orthogonal dipoles, two of which can be selected according to a weight function in different usage scenarios. The weight function is determined by considering the variation in the cross-polarization power ratio (XPR) and the antenna inclination angle which depend on the radio-propagation environment and human motion. To confirm the suitability of the proposed antenna, we perform preliminary experiments to evaluate the channel capacity of a weighted-polarization wearable MIMO antenna with an arm-swinging dynamic phantom. The measured and analytical results are in good agreement, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed antenna. We demonstrate that the proposed antenna is suitable for realizing gigabit mobile communications in future wearable MIMO applications.

    This paper shows accuracy of using azimuth-variable path-loss fitting in white-space (WS) boundary-estimation. We perform experiments to evaluate this method, and demonstrate that the required number of sensors can be significantly reduced. We have proposed a WS boundary-estimation framework that utilizes sensors to not only obtain spectrum sensing data, but also to estimate the boundaries of the incumbent radio system (IRS) coverage. The framework utilizes the transmitter position information and pathloss fitting. The pathloss fitting describes the IRS coverage by approximating the well-known pathloss prediction formula from the received signal power data, which is measured using sensors, and sensor-transmitter separation distances. To enhance its accuracy, we have further proposed a pathloss-fitting method that employs azimuth variables to reflect the azimuth dependency of the IRS coverage, including the antenna directivity of the transmitter and propagation characteristics.

    Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) is one of the most popular tools for speech enhancement. In this letter, we present an improved semi-supervised NMF (ISNMF)-based speech enhancement algorithm combining techniques of noise estimation and Incremental NMF (INMF). In this approach, fixed speech bases are obtained from training samples offline in advance while noise bases are trained on-the-fly whenever new noisy frame arrives. The INMF algorithm is adopted for noise bases learning because it can overcome the difficulties that conventional NMF confronts in online processing. The proposed algorithm is real-time capable in the sense that it processes the time frames of the noisy speech one by one and the computational complexity is feasible. Four different objective evaluation measures at various signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over traditional semi-supervised NMF (SNMF) and well-known robust principal component analysis (RPCA) algorithm.

    There is a strong push towards the ultra-realistic presentation of multimedia contents made possible by the latest advances in computational and signal processing technologies. Three-dimensional sound presentation is necessary to convey a natural and rich multimedia experience. Promising ways to achieve this include the sound field reproduction technique known as high-order Ambisonics (HOA). While these advanced methods are now within the capabilities of consumer-level processing systems, their adoption is hindered by the lack of contents. Production and coding of the audio components in multimedia focus on traditional formats such as stereophonic sound. Mainstream audio codecs and media such as CDs or DVDs do not support advanced, rich contents such as HOA encodings. To ameliorate this problem and speed up the adoption of spatial sound technologies, this paper proposes a novel way to downmix HOA contents into a stereo signal. The resulting data can be distributed using conventional methods such as audio CDs or as the audio component of an internet video stream. The results can be listened to using legacy stereo reproduction systems. However, they include spatial information encoded as the inter-channel level and phase differences. The proposed method consists of a downmixing filterbank which independently modulate inter-channel differences at each frequency bin. The proposal is evaluated using simple test signals and found to outperform conventional methods such as matrix-encoded surround and the Ambisonics UHJ format in terms of spatial resolution. The proposal can be coupled with a previously presented method to recover HOA signals from stereo recordings. The resulting system allows for the preservation of full-surround spatial information in ultra-realistic contents when they are transferred using a stereo stream. Simulation results show that a compatible decoder can accurately recover up to five HOA channels from a stereo signal (2nd order HOA data in the horizontal plane).

  • Part-Segment Features with Optimized Shape Priors for Articulated Pose Estimation

    We propose part-segment (PS) features for estimating an articulated pose in still images. The PS feature evaluates the image likelihood of each body part (e.g. head, torso, and arms) robustly to background clutter and nuisance textures on the body. While general gradient features (e.g. HOG) might include many nuisance responses, the PS feature represents only the region of the body part by iterative segmentation while updating the shape prior of each part. In contrast to similar segmentation features, part segmentation is improved by part-specific shape priors that are optimized by training images with fully-automatically obtained seeds. The shape priors are modeled efficiently based on clustering for fast extraction of PS features. The PS feature is fused complementarily with gradient features using discriminative training and adaptive weighting for robust and accurate evaluation of part similarity. Comparative experiments with public datasets demonstrate improvement in pose estimation by the PS features.

  • Broadband Circularly Polarized Stacked Patch Antenna for Universal UHF RFID Applications Open Access

    A double layer stacked patch antenna with a size of 200×200×48mm3 is proposed in this investigation. To achieve a broad CP bandwidth that can cover universal UHF RFID applications (840-960MHz), a slot loaded circular patch antenna fed by an L-shaped probe is designed as the lower layer (main patch), while the top layer (parasitic patch) is a simple circular patch loaded with a cross-slot of dissimilar arm lengths. Besides demonstrating a broad 10-dB return loss bandwidth of 16% (823-966MHz) and a CP bandwidth (3-dB axial ratio) of 14.0% (837-963MHz), the proposed antenna also yields maximum gain and minimum radiation efficiency of 8.8dBic and 85%, respectively, across the universal UHF RFID bands.

  • Practical Forgeries and Distinguishers against PAES

    We present two practical attacks on the CAESAR candidate PAES. The first attack is a universal forgery for any plaintext with at least 240 bytes. It works for the nonce-repeating variant of PAES and in a nutshell it is a state recovery based on solving differential equations for the S-Box leaked through the ciphertext that arise when the plaintext has a certain difference. We show that to produce the forgery based on this method the attacker needs only 211 time and data. The second attack is a distinguisher for 264 out of 2128 keys that requires negligible complexity and only one pair of known plaintext-ciphertext. The attack is based on the lack of constants in the initialization of the PAES which allows to exploit the symmetric properties of the keyless AES round. Both of our attacks contradict the security goals of PAES.

  • Analysis of Elderly Drivers' Performance Using Large-Scale Test Data

    This study explored the question of how to minimize older drivers' accidents and to identify at-risk drivers by analyzing their driving performance. Previous traffic research reported that there were two factors involved in risky driving, namely driving risk perception and risky driving attitude. We investigated these two factors as indicators of an at-risk driver by using large-scale test data from license renewal tests that are obligatory for Japanese drivers who are 70 years of age or older. The tests include a driving simulator test, an on-road test, and a cognitive screening test. By using these assessments and predictions made with renewal driving tests, we were able to indicate the possibility of identifying at-risk drivers.

    Recent work on joint word segmentation, POS (Part Of Speech) tagging, and dependency parsing in Chinese has two key problems: the first is that word segmentation based on character and dependency parsing based on word were not combined well in the transition-based framework, and the second is that the joint model suffers from the insufficiency of annotated corpus. In order to resolve the first problem, we propose to transform the traditional word-based dependency tree into character-based dependency tree by using the internal structure of words and then propose a novel character-level joint model for the three tasks. In order to resolve the second problem, we propose a novel semi-supervised joint model for exploiting n-gram feature and dependency subtree feature from partially-annotated corpus. Experimental results on the Chinese Treebank show that our joint model achieved 98.31%, 94.84% and 81.71% for Chinese word segmentation, POS tagging, and dependency parsing, respectively. Our model outperforms the pipeline model of the three tasks by 0.92%, 1.77% and 3.95%, respectively. Particularly, the F1 value of word segmentation and POS tagging achieved the best result compared with those reported until now.

    To design a wireless sensor network for farms, it is necessary to understand and predict the effect of vegetation. In this study, the change in the propagation loss characteristics in 920-MHz band is examined during the growth of mulberry bushes. The received signal strength indicator (RSSI) is measured as a function of the distance between the transmitting antenna (Tx) and the receiving antenna (Rx) in a 50×50m mulberry field. The Tx and Rx are placed at a height of 1.5m. Moreover, the horizontal and vertical polarizations are measured and the differences are shown. Three empirical vegetation attenuation models are introduced, and the measured data have been fitted to each model. The results show that the non-zero gradient model is the best model at predicting the vegetation attenuation in a mulberry farm regardless of the polarization or mulberry growth. It is found that the attenuation dependence on the plant height is linear. Furthermore, the results have revealed that the horizontal polarization had about 1.5 times as large an effect on the vegetation attenuation as the vertical polarization.
