Although sparse coding has emerged as an extremely powerful tool for texture and image classification, it neglects the relationship of coding coefficients from the same class in the training stage, which may cause a decline in the classification performance. In this paper, we propose a novel coding strategy named compact sparse coding for ground-based cloud classification. We add a constraint on coding coefficients into the objective function of traditional sparse coding. In this way, coding coefficients from the same class can be forced to their mean vector, making them more compact and discriminative. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods.

This paper presents an Adapting Block-Propagative Background Subtraction (ABPBGS) designed for Ultra High Definition Television (UHDTV) foreground detection. The main idea is to detect block after block along the objects in order to skip all areas of the image in which there is no moving object. This is particularly interesting for UHDTV when the objects of interest could represent not even 0.1% of the total area. From a seed block which is determined in a previous iteration, the detection will spread along an object as long as it detects a part of that object. A block history map guaranties that each block is processed only once. Moreover, only small blocks are loaded and processed, thus saving computational time and memory usage. The process of each block is independent enough to be easily parallelized. Compared to 9 state-of-the-art works, the ABPBGS achieved the best results with an average global quality score of 0.57 (1 being the maximum) on a dataset of 4K and 8K UHDTV sequences developed for this work. None of the state-of-the-art methods could process 4K videos in reasonable time while the ABPBGS has shown an average speed of 5.18fps. In comparison, 5 of the 9 state-of-the-art methods performed slower on 270p down-scale version of the same videos. The experiments have also shown that for the process an 8K UHDTV video the ABPBGS can divide the memory required by about 24 for a total of 450MB.

A Bayer-like White-RGB (W-RGB) color filter array (CFA) was invented for overcoming the weaknesses of commonly used RGB based Bayer CFA. In order to reproduce full-color images from the Bayer-like W-RGB CFA, a demosaicing or a CFA interpolation process which estimates missing color channels of raw mosaiced images from CFA is an essential process for single sensor digital cameras having CFA. In the case of Bayer CFA, numerous demosaicing methods which have remarkable performance were already proposed. In order to take advantage of both remarkable performance of demosaicing method for Bayer CFA and the characteristic of high-sensitive Bayer-like W-RGB CFA, a new method of transforming Bayer-like W-RGB to Bayer pattern is required. Therefore, in this letter, we present a new method of transforming Bayer-like W-RGB pattern to Bayer pattern. The proposed method mainly uses the color difference assumption between different channels which can be applied to practical consumer digital cameras.

This paper proposes fast repairing methods that uses hierarchical software defined network controllers for recovering from massive failure in a large-scale IP over a wavelength-division multiplexing network. The network consists of multiple domains, and slave controllers are deployed in each domain. While each slave controller configures transport paths in its domain, the master controller manages end-to-end paths, which are established across multiple domains. For fast repair of intra-domain paths by the slave controllers, we define the optimization problem of path configuration order and propose a heuristic method, which minimizes the repair time to move from a disrupted state to a suboptimal state. For fast repair of end-to-end path through multiple domains, we also propose a network abstraction method, which efficiently manages the entire network. Evaluation results suggest that fast repair within a few minutes can be achieved by applying the proposed methods to the repairing scenario, where multiple links and nodes fail, in a 10,000-node network.

In this paper, a real-valued reweighted l1 norm minimization method based on data reconstruction in monostatic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed. Exploiting the special structure of the received data, and through the received data reconstruction approach and unitary transformation technique, a one-dimensional real-valued received data matrix can be obtained for recovering the sparse signal. Then a weight matrix based on real-valued MUSIC spectrum is designed for reweighting l1 norm minimization to enhance the sparsity of solution. Finally, the DOA can be estimated by finding the non-zero rows in the recovered matrix. Compared with traditional l1 norm-based minimization methods, the proposed method provides better angle estimation performance. Simulation results are presented to verify the effectiveness and advantage of the proposed method.

Index compression is partially responsible for the current performance achievements of Internet search engines. Among many latest compression techniques, Simple9 can pack as many integers as possible into a single 32-bit machine word using 9 different padding modes. However, the number of wasted bits in Simple9 remains large. In previous works, researchers have focused on reducing the unused trailing bits of the padding modes and have proposed various additional modes that make full use of the cases of the status bits. Instead, we focus on the wasted bits in the integer list, padding extra zeros for a complete dense mode when the number of integers is not enough to fit a complete mode. More precisely, we first propose a novel index compression method called SimpleD with dense padding modes to achieve a more compact storage compared with that of Simple9. We then design an innovative metric for extracting the inserted extra zero integers during the decoding phase. Experiments on the TREC WT2G and GOV2 datasets show that our encoder outperforms Simple9 while still retaining a very fast decompression speed.

An Al-N system optical absorption layer has been developed, to be used for Al-based metal mesh electrodes on touch screen panels. The triple-layered electrode effectively suppresses the optical reflection in both visible light and the blue color region and exhibits excellent wet etching property that accommodates micro-fabrication. Due to its high noise immunity and contact sensitivity originating from its low electrical resistivity, the proposed metal mesh electrodes are useful for touch-sensitive panels in the next generation ultra-high-resolution displays.

We have developed a capacitance sensor of frequency modulation for integrated touchpanels using amorphous In-Sn-Zn-O (α-ITZO) thin-film transistors (TFTs). This capacitance sensor consists of a ring oscillator, whose one stage is replaced by a reset transistor, sensing transistor, and sensing electrode. The sensing electrode is prepared as one terminal to form a sensing capacitor when the other terminal is added by a finger. The ring oscillator consists of pseudo CMOS inverters. We confirm that the oscillation frequency changes when the other terminal is added. This result suggests that this capacitance sensor can be applied to integrated touchpanels on flatpanel displays.

Anchor graph hashing (AGH) is a promising hashing method for nearest neighbor (NN) search. AGH realizes efficient search by generating and utilizing a small number of points that are called anchors. In this paper, we propose a method for improving AGH, which considers data distribution in a similarity space and selects suitable anchors by performing principal component analysis (PCA) in the similarity space.

The technique of partial transmit sequences (PTS) is effective in reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. However, the conventional PTS (CPTS) scheme has high computation complexity because it needs several inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) units and an optimization process to find the candidate signal with the lowest PAPR. In this paper, we propose a new low-complexity PTS scheme for OFDM systems, in which a hybrid subblock partition method (SPM) is used to reduce the complexity that results from the IFFT computations and the optimization process. Also, the PAPR reduction performance of the proposed PTS scheme is further enhanced by multiplying a selected subblock with a predefined phase rotation vector to form a new subblock. The time-domain signal of the new subblock can be obtained simply by performing a circularly-shift-left operation on the IFFT output of the selected subblock. Computer simulations show that the proposed PTS scheme achieves a PAPR reduction performance close to that of the CPTS scheme with the pseudo-random SPM, but with much lower computation complexity.

This letter presents a two-stage method to extend the degenerate unmixing estimation technique (DUET) for reverberant speech separation. First, frequency-bin-wise attenuation and delay parameters are introduced and estimated by online update rules, to handle early reflections. Next, a mask reestimation algorithm based on the precedence effect is developed to detect and fix the errors on binary masks caused by late reflections. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method improves separation performance significantly.

Due to its on-demand and pay-as-you-go properties, cloud computing has become an attractive alternative for HPC applications. However, communication-intensive applications with complex communication patterns still cannot be performed efficiently on cloud platforms, which are equipped with MapReduce technologies, such as Hadoop and Spark. In particular, one major obstacle is that MapReduce's simple programming model cannot explicitly manipulate data transfers between compute nodes. Another obstacle is cloud's relatively poor network performance compared with traditional HPC platforms. The traditional Strassen's algorithm of square matrix multiplication has a recursive and complex pattern on the HPC platform. Therefore, it cannot be directly applied to the cloud platform. In this paper, we demonstrate how to make Strassen's algorithm with complex communication patterns “cloud-friendly”. By reorganizing Strassen's algorithm in an iterative pattern, we completely separate its computations and communications, making it fit to MapReduce programming model. By adopting a novel data/task parallel strategy, we solve Strassen's data dependency problems, making it well balanced. This is the first instance of Strassen's algorithm in MapReduce-style systems, which also matches Strassen's communication lower bound. Further experimental results show that it achieves a speedup ranging from 1.03× to 2.50× over the classical Θ(n3) algorithm. We believe the principle can be applied to many other complex scientific applications.

A field multiplication in the extended binary field is often expressed using Toeplitz matrix-vector products (TMVPs), whose matrices have special properties such as symmetric or triangular. We show that such TMVPs can be efficiently implemented by taking advantage of some properties of matrices. This yields an efficient multiplier when a field multiplication involves such TMVPs. For example, we propose an efficient multiplier based on the Dickson basis which requires the reduced number of XOR gates by an average of 34% compared with previously known results.

When there are multiple component predictors, it is promising to integrate them into one predictor for advanced reasoning. If each component predictor is given as a stochastic model in the form of probability distribution, an exponential mixture of the component probability distributions provides a good way to integrate them. However, weight parameters used in the exponential mixture model are difficult to estimate if there is no training samples for performance evaluation. As a suboptimal way to solve this problem, weight parameters may be estimated so that the exponential mixture model should be a balance point that is defined as an equilibrium point with respect to the distance from/to all component probability distributions. In this paper, we propose a weight parameter estimation method that represents this concept using a symmetric Kullback-Leibler divergence and generalize this method.

New payment technologies are coming that will raise user convenience. To support automatic hands-free payment, merchant devices will collect customer's information from the cloud of payment service providers or customer's smart phones, which should be removed after the transaction. Using Jaccard containment, we propose a proactive security approach of cleaning personal data at merchant-side point-of-sale terminals. We also propose a sampling method to reduce communication overhead by several orders of magnitude.

This paper proposes a new method that combines signal modulation and FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) simulations to reduce the computation time in multiple-antenna analysis. In this method, signals are modulated so as to maintain orthogonality among the excited signals; multiple antennas are excited at the same time. This means just one FDTD simulation is needed whereas the conventional method demands as many simulations as there are transmitting antennas. The simulation of a 2×2 multi-antenna system shows that the proposed method matches the performance of the conventional method even though its computation time is much shorter.

Middle-level parts have attracted great attention in the computer vision community, acting as discriminative elements for objects. In this paper we propose an unsupervised approach to mine discriminative parts for object detection. This work features three aspects. First, we introduce an unsupervised, exemplar-based training process for part detection. We generate initial parts by selective search and then train part detectors by exemplar SVM. Second, a part selection model based on consistency and distinctiveness is constructed to select effective parts from the candidate pool. Third, we combine discriminative part mining with the deformable part model (DPM) for object detection. The proposed method is evaluated on the PASCAL VOC2007 and VOC2010 datasets. The experimental results demons-trate the effectiveness of our method for object detection.
