  • An Efficient Signal Detection Method for Uplink Multiuser Systems Based on Collaborative Spatial Multiplexing

    In this letter, we propose an efficient signal detection method for uplink multiuser systems based on collaborative spatial multiplexing (CSM). The proposed method achieves near-optimal performance and shows only 0.8 dB loss at the target frame error rate (FER) of 10-2. Moreover, the error performance of each user is almost the same in the proposed method, which is an important property in a multiuser MIMO system where each user's error performance must satisfy some fixed error rate criteria.

    A critical problem with wireless LAN-based positioning systems is the degradation in position estimation accuracy due to complex variation in the strength of the received signal, which originates in the nature of the underlying wireless channel. Handling such variation effectively is essential for the creation of practical wireless LAN-based positioning systems. In this paper, we propose a collaborative mechanism for correcting position estimation errors. The main objective is to assist users in correcting estimation errors manually by providing access to a shared body of accumulated information on corrections made by many other users. In particular, the mechanism is designed to enable any group of users to collaboratively build upon this body of information. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism through experiments. The results confirm that the proposed mechanism can provide effective estimation error correction in a realistic environment.

    Providing mobile services that ensure user satisfaction is one of the most crucial issues for telecommunication carriers and service providers. Traditionally, user satisfaction with the service, i.e., the Quality of Experience (QoE), has been assessed in a laboratory by using elaborate network systems and customized terminals. However, reliable QoE for a target mobile service in the context of actual use cannot be obtained by laboratory experiment, since QoE can be affected by a variety of factors such as environmental conditions and the mental state of the user. This paper proposes a novel Web script-based field evaluation method designed to ascertain user satisfaction with mobile services. The proposed method has the following practical advantages. Since experimental conditions, especially communication conditions, can be simulated with a Web script, such as FlashLite, a subjective assessment can be conducted anywhere using the mobile terminal of the participant. Thus, QoE for a target mobile service in the field can easily be obtained.

  • Preliminary Study of Performance Evaluation of Adaptive Scan with Wide-Band Noise Modulation for Spaceborne Rain Radar Based on Simulation

    Wide-band noise modulation is added to the adaptive scan technique for spaceborne rain radar. The performance of this technique is studied by simulation using one month of TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) Precipitation Radar (PR) data from the viewpoints of improving the sensitivity and reducing power consumption. The results show that the adaptive scan technique with wide-band noise modulation uses about 25% less energy than the conventional scanning technique. The adaptive scan using wide-band noise modulation is more effective than that using a normal pulse for localized rainy areas. Surface data as well as rainfall data can be obtained by using the adaptive scan using wide-band noise modulation.

  • SAWSDL Service Discovery Based on Fine-Grained Data Semantics

    With the aim to improve the effectiveness of SAWSDL service discovery, this paper proposes a novel discovery method for SAWSDL services, which is based on the matchmaking of so-called fine-grained data semantics that is defined via sets of atomic elements with built-in data types. The fine-grained data semantics can be obtained by a transformation algorithm that decomposes parameters at message level into a set of atomic elements, considering the characteristics of SAWSDL service structure and semantic annotations. Then, a matchmaking algorithm is proposed for the matching of fine-grained data semantics, which avoids the complex and expensive structural matching at the message level. The fine-grained data semantics is transparent to the specific data structure of message-level parameters, therefore, it can help to match successfully similar Web services with different data structures of parameters. Moreover, a comprehensive measure is proposed by considering together several important components of SAWSDL service descriptions at the same time. Finally, this method is evaluated on SAWSDL service discovery test collection SAWSDL-TC2 and compared with other SAWSDL matchmakers. The experimental results show that our method can improve the effectiveness of SAWSDL service discovery with low average query response time. The results imply that fine-grained parameters fit to represent the data semantics of SAWSDL services, especially when data structures of parameters are not important for semantics.

    Despite the recent advances in personal communication devices and access network technology, users still face problems such as high device maintenance costs, complication of inter-device cooperation, illegal access to devices, and leakage of personal information. Consequently, it is difficult for users to construct a secure network with local as well as remote personal devices. We propose a User-driven Service Creation Platform (USCP), which enables users to construct a secure private network using a simple and intuitive approach that leverages the authentication mechanism in mobile phone networks. USCP separates signaling and data paths in a flat, virtual network topology. In this paper, we describe the basic design of USCP, the current implementation, and system evaluations.

  • QoS-Aware Bandwidth Allocation Algorithm for Multimedia Service Networks

    Bandwidth is an extremely valuable and scarce resource in multimedia networks. Therefore, efficient bandwidth management is necessary in order to provide high Quality of Service (QoS) to users. In this paper, a new QoS-aware bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed for the efficient use of available bandwidth. By using the multi-objective optimization technique and Talmud allocation rule, the bandwidth is adaptively controlled to maximize network efficiency while ensuring QoS provisioning. In addition, we adopt the online feedback strategy to dynamically respond to current network conditions. With a simulation study, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can adaptively approximate an optimized solution under widely diverse traffic load intensities.

  • Using Hierarchical Transformation to Generate Assertion Code from OCL Constraints

    Object Constraint Language (OCL) is frequently applied in software development for stipulating formal constraints on software models. Its platform-independent characteristic allows for wide usage during the design phase. However, application in platform-specific processes, such as coding, is less obvious because it requires usage of bespoke tools for that platform. In this paper we propose an approach to generate assertion code for OCL constraints for multiple platform specific languages, using a unified framework based on structural similarities of programming languages. We have succeeded in automating the process of assertion code generation for four different languages using our tool. To show effectiveness of our approach in terms of development effort, an experiment was carried out and summarised.

    A new state estimation algorithm is presented for a class of LTI systems that have an input disturbance in polynomial form and a sinusoidal sensor disturbance in the measurement output. Adaptation rules are developed for identifying the unknown magnitude, phase and frequency of the sensor disturbance from the system output measurement. For the application of the identification result to the state estimation problem, the sinusoidal signal with arbitrary initial phase has been considered in this paper. In order to test the performance of the proposed algorithm, comparative computer simulations have been carried out with a robust state observer. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    This letter addresses linear processing issues for the downlink of closed-loop multi-user non-regenerative MIMO-relay systems with arbitrary number of antennas at each node. First three precoding design schemes at BS are presented. Then given the fixed BS linear processing matrix, we propose a joint iterative linear processing scheme for the relay station and mobile stations, aiming to minimize the total mean squared error (MSE). Finally Simulation results are provided to show the performance gain of joint linear processing at the multi-antenna nodes.

    In the paper, a technique of the numerical inversion of multidimensional Laplace transforms (nD NILT), based on a complex Fourier series approximation is elaborated in light of a possible ralative error achievable. The detailed error analysis shows a relationship between the numerical integration of a multifold Bromwich integral and a complex Fourier series approximation, and leads to a novel formula relating the limiting relative error to the nD NILT technique parameters.

    This letter investigates the effects of spatial correlation on several multiple antenna schemes in multiuser environments. Using an order statistics upper bound on achievable capacity, we quantify the interaction among spatial correlation, spatial diversity, spatial multiplexing and multiuser diversity. Also, it is verified that the upper bound is tighter than asymptotic capacity when the number of users is relatively small.

    In [1], Bellare, Boldyreva, and Micali addressed the security of public-key encryptions (PKEs) in a multi-user setting (called the BBM model in this paper). They showed that although the indistinguishability in the BBM model is induced from that in the conventional model, its reduction is far from tight in general, and this brings a serious key length problem. In this paper, we discuss PKE schemes in which the IND-CCA security in the BBM model can be obtained tightly from the IND-CCA security. We call such PKE schemes IND-CCA secure in the BBM model with invariant security reductions (briefly, SR-invariant IND-CCABBM secure). These schemes never suffer from the underlying key length problem in the BBM model. We present three instances of an SR-invariant IND-CCABBM secure PKE scheme: the first is based on the Fujisaki-Okamoto PKE scheme [7], the second is based on the Bellare-Rogaway PKE scheme [3], and the last is based on the Cramer-Shoup PKE scheme [5].

    In this paper, we study the minimum spanning tree problem with label selection, that is, the problem of finding a minimum spanning tree of a vertex-labeled graph where the weight of each edge may vary depending on the selection of labels of vertices at both ends. The problem is especially important as the application to mathematical OCR. It is shown that the problem is NP-hard. However, for the application to mathematical OCR, it is sufficient to deal with only graphs with small tree-width. In this paper, a linear-time algorithm for series-parallel graphs is presented. Since the minimum spanning tree problem with label selection is closely related to the generalized minimum spanning tree problem, their relation is discussed.

    The purpose of this work is to synthesize a three-dimension C60 polymer using photo-polymerization method. The used pristine materials were C60 precipitates prepared by a liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation (LLIP) method. The prepared LLIP material was set in the vacuum and was compressed in the anvil with the pressure of 600 MPa or 7 GPa. The 4th harmonics FEL with the wavelength of 500 nm was irradiated with macro-pulses (the pulse width of 20 µs) containing very short micro-pulses (the pulse width of 200 fs). The Raman Ag(2) peak of C60 molecules in the vicinity of 1469 cm-1 becomes broad and shifts to the lower energy region as proceeding of polymerization. Under high pressure and/or FEL irradiation the LLIP crystal revealed the large red-shift and the increment of the half width of the Raman Ag(2) peak. Furthermore the LLIP crystal mixture with iodine revealed the more distinctive red-shift, ca.13cm-1 because of highly packing of C60 molecules. The C60 molecular accession by LLIP process and/or the photo-assisted hole-doping from iodine were promising conditions to promote the photo-polymerization effectively.

    To meet the increasing demand to expand wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission capacity, ultrahigh spectral density coherent optical transmission employing multi-level modulation formats has attracted a lot of attention. In particular, ultrahigh multi-level quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) has an enormous advantage as regards expanding the spectral efficiency to 10 bit/s/Hz and even approaching the Shannon limit. We describe fundamental technologies for ultrahigh spectral density coherent QAM transmission and present experimental results on polarization-multiplexed 256 QAM coherent optical transmission using heterodyne and homodyne detection with a frequency-stabilized laser and an optical phase-locked loop technique. In this experiment, Raman amplifiers are newly adopted to decrease the signal power, which can reduce the fiber nonlinearity. As a result, the power penalty was reduced from 5.3 to 2.0 dB. A 64 Gbit/s data signal is successfully transmitted over 160 km with an optical bandwidth of 5.4 GHz.

  • A Time-Variant Analysis of Phase Noise in Series Quadrature Oscillators

    This paper presents a systemic analysis for phase noise performances of the series quadrature oscillator (QOSC) by using the time-variant impulse sensitivity function (ISF) model. The effective ISF for each noise source in the oscillator is derived mathematically. According to these effective ISFs, the explicit closed-form expression for phase noise due to the total thermal noise in the series QOSC is derived, and the phase noise contribution from the flicker noise in the regenerative and coupling transistors is also figured out. The phase noise contributions from the thermal noise and the flicker noise are verified by SpectreRF simulations.

  • Impact of Channel Estimation Errors in Cooperative Transmission over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

    In this paper, we analyze the impact of channel estimation errors for both decode-and-forward (DF) and amplify-and-forward (AF) cooperative communication systems over Nakagami-m fading channels. Firstly, we derive the exact one-integral and the approximate expressions of the symbol error rate (SER) for DF and AF relay systems with different modulations. We also present expressions showing the limitations of SER under channel estimation errors. Secondly, in order to quantify the impact of channel estimation errors, the average signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) gap ratio is investigated for the two types of cooperative communication systems. Numerical results confirm that our theoretical analysis for SER is very efficient and accurate. Comparison of the average SNR gap ratio shows that DF model is less susceptible to channel estimation errors than AF model.

    This letter presents structurally simpler symbol error rate (SER) expressions for Transmit Antenna Selection/Maximal-Ratio Combining (TAS/MRC) scheme in independent Nakagami-m fading channels in a comparison with those in the literature. First, the SER is derived as a single infinite series of simple functions for arbitrary m. For integer m, the SER can be attained as a closed-form expression with a double finite series. Moreover, simple asymptotic SER expressions suggest that the TAS/MRC scheme can achieve a full diversity order at high SNR. Numerical and simulation results verify the conciseness of the derived expressions.

    Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) offer quick and easy network deployment in situations where it is not possible otherwise and they can be used to provide mobile users with a temporary infrastructure to use services in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Nodes in MANETs are free to move and organize themselves in an arbitrary fashion. The challenging task in such dynamic environments is how to improve the service availability. Replicating a service at some nodes distributed across the network is an effective strategy. However, service replication can considerably impact the system energy consumption. Since mobile devices have limited battery resources, a dynamic and efficient service replication is necessary to support such environments. In this paper, we propose a distributed service replication scheme for achieving high service availability with reasonable energy consumption for MANETs. The proposed method called HDAR (Highly Distributed Adaptive Service Replication) divides the whole network into disjoint zones of at most 2-hops in diameter and builds a dynamic replication mechanism which selects new replica zones depending on their service demand and the tradeoff between the communication and replication energy consumption costs. Through simulations, we confirmed that our approach can achieve higher service availability with reasonable energy consumption than existing methods.
