A novel adaptive algorithm based on pilot channel (PCA) for MMSE multiuser detection in downlink CDMA is proposed in this paper. This algorithm uses the information in pilot channel to compute the desired weight vector directly. Compared with conventional adaptive algorithms and blind algorithms, it does not require training sequences nor channel estimation. Analysis shows that the weight vector obtained by the PCA algorithm converges to the Wiener solution globally and its computational complexity is O(N2). Simulation results show that the PCA algorithm can adapt rapidly to the changing environment. The steady state performance can be enhanced by increasing the transmitted power in pilot channel, but is worse than that of conventional recursive least-square (RLS) algorithm in decision-directed mode. Also, performance of the adaptive MMSE detector is much better than that of conventional RAKE receiver.

The Internet is a heterogeneous and rapidly evolving environment. New information services have been added, modified, and diversified, while legacy services have been abandoned. Users' requirements for services are also changing very quickly. It is becoming very difficult to find required information services from extremely huge amount of information in the Internet. It is necessary to design information service system, which can meet user's heterogeneous requirements for services, adaptability of services to cope with ever-changing situation and to provide assurance. Faded information field architecture and Push/Pull Mobile Agent (MA) technologies are proposed as basic components of autonomous information service system to achieve these goals. The system is proposed from users' and providers' point of view, therefore we present a technique for balancing users' and providers' communication cost based on `through rate' for faded information field realization. On the basis of this technique, autonomous information allocation algorithm is proposed, in which each node may determine information amount based on push/pull cost. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is shown through simulation.

To provide cellular data services with differentiated QoS, a shared resource scheme, based on the optimization theory and LaGrange λ-calculus was developed. This scheme can generate a fair schedule for a diverse mix of traffic with diverse QoS requirements in a limited radio spectrum. We define the acceptance indication, AI, as the QoS measurement for the shared resource scheme. The experimental results show that this approach outperforms other existing schemes.

This paper proposes the technology of wide passband wavelength-division multiplexing (WWDM) for access networks offering multiplexed services. The technology greatly relaxes the wavelength setting accuracy requirements of the WDM light source and the multiplexer/demultiplexer (MUX/DEMUX) compared to dense WDM (DWDM) technology. A WWDM optical converter that offers the Internet protocol (IP) service is implemented and its performance assessed at temperatures ranging from 0C to 45C. In addition, we assess three channel transmission (cable television (CATV) and IP services) in the 1.5 µm region as a multiplexed service example. Using the proposed WWDM, we confirm the feasibility of a service multiplexing system that offers simultaneous CATV and IP services in access networks. This WWDM technology is expected to provide cost effective service multiplexing systems for access networks.

This work presents a frame-structure, referred to as CATM (CATV ATM), to serve as a wireless network infrastructure. The widespread CATV (Community Antenna TV) networks are attractive infrastructures for next generation wireless networks. Providing interactive broadband services over CATV networks is a major trend in communication and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks with broadband communication features well fitted to be the backbone of CATV networks. Based on the proposed network architecture, this work addresses and investigates the problems of call setup and handoff handling. This work also proposes a wireless signaling protocol for establishing mobile connections over the CATM-based wireless networks. To enhance bandwidth utilization, the proposed scheme attempts to keep the path resulting after handoff as short as possible. The protocol also evolves a seamless handoff scheme (denoted as SHSW-CATM), that can preserve data continuity, is transparent to other mobile terminals, and produces a shorter path. Analytical results reveal that the SHSW-CATM has a high probability of obtaining an optimal path (that is, a non-elongated path) following mobility.

In this paper, we discuss on the realization of reduced peak power transmission for the multicarrier systems. Since the signals have large amplitude fluctuations in conventional multicarrier systems, signals amplified by a nonlinear amplifier are greatly distorted, resulting in severe performance degradation. In order to avoid this large amplitude fluctuation, we propose a scheme for reducing the nonlinear distortion by using the set of the signal point series which show low peak to mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR) value. In this system, one symbol is transmitted with multicarriers and the received signal is detected with maximum likelihood sequence detection.

The encoding procedure that allows one to represent integers by binary vectors (codewords) in such a way that addition is replaced with the OR operation applied to these vectors is described. The codeword of the sum is constructed using the decoding algorithm. As a result, many of the transformations can be realized using parallel processing, and the method can be considered as a competitor to existing computer arithmetic.

The alignment of a nematic liquid crystal (LC) parallel to the polarization direction of the laser could be induced by three types of polyimide (PI) films, a PI based on aromatic dianhydride and two PIs on alicyclic dianhydride, exposed to polarized pulsed laser at 266 nm at high fluence in air. The UV-visible absorption spectra of the PI films showed that a remarkable chemical change occurred after exposure at the high fluence in air. In contrast, in argon atmosphere the PI based on aromatic dianhydride was radiation-resistant and the exposed PI film could induce alignment of the LC molecules parallel to laser polarization. We estimate that the mechanism of the parallel alignment observed in argon is not the photodegradation but the orientation of the PI molecules.

We present novel semiconductor technologies of ZnO epitaxial films with using laser molecular-beam epitaxy method. Exciting optical properties such as room temperature lasing in ZnO nanocrystalline films and quantum size effects in ZnO/MgxZn1-xO superlattices were observed. By developing crystalline quality with using lattice-matched substrates, we could control resistivity of the doped ZnO films from 10-3 Ωcm to 104 Ωcm. These results would provide us an opportunity to construct a monolithic array consisted of light emitting devices and field effect transistors towards a possible flat panel display.

Multi-user uniquely decodable (UD) k-ary coding for the multiple-access adder channel is investigated. It is shown that a Tf+g+1-user UD k-ary affine code with code length f+g+1 can be obtained from two Tf-user and Tg-user UD k-ary affine codes. This leads to construct recursively a Tn-user UD k-ary affine code with arbitrary code length n. The total rate of the code tends to be higher than those of all the multi-user UD k-ary codes reported previously as the number of users increases.

A Co/Pd multilayer film with perpendicular coercivity of 2.2 kOe and remanence ratio (SQ) of unity was prepared by electron beam evaporation in vacuum. In the MFM image of signal patterns of 4 kFRPI recorded using a ring-type MIG head, many reversed domains were observed. However, when the film was magnetized along the film normal direction using an electromagnet (H = -13 kOe), only few reversed magnetic domains were observed, which was consistent with SQ = 1. Therefore, the reversed domains in the signal patterns were induced in the recording process. dc erasing was also studied with the magnetic field inclined to the film normal. The domain structures were almost the same when the perpendicular component of the field was kept constant while the in-plane component was varied, implying that the in-plane field component did not contribute to the formation of the reversed domains. It was found that reversed magnetic domains were easily induced even by a weak reversing magnetic field applied along the film normal. Hence, although the possibility of an insufficient recording head field was not excluded, it seemed more likely that the reversed magnetic domains in the signal patterns were caused by some erasing effect of the ring-type MIG head. For a Co/Pd multilayer medium with a negative nucleation field in the perpendicular M-H loop, a stronger reversing field was needed to induce the reversed magnetic domains. No reversed magnetic domains were observed in the MFM image for signal patterns of 4 kFRPI in this medium, indicating that a negative nucleation field was effective to suppress the formation of reversed magnetic domains.

Traditional process schedulers in operating systems control the sharing of the processor resources among processes using a fixed scheduling policy based on the utilization of a computer system such as a real-time or a timesharing system. Since the control over processor allocation is based on a fixed policy, not based on contents or behavior of processes, this can hinder an effective use of a processor or can extend the processing time of a process unnecessarily in some cases. We have already proposed a process scheduling policy, which responds to the behavior of multiple processes of a WWW server, in order to improve the response time of a WWW server. This policy gives any process of a WWW server that is predicted to be a WWW server process handling a text data request from a browser priority over all other processes by moving it to the head of the ready queue where processes waiting for the processor to become available are placed. In this paper, we present the experimental evaluation of our proposed process scheduling policy with regard to the number of simultaneous accesses from browsers and the processor load of the server machine, and explain the results we obtained.

Meteor storms and showers are now considered as potential hazard in the space environment. Radar observations of meteors has an advantage of a much higher sensitivity over optical observations. The MU radar of Kyoto University, Japan has a unique capability of very fast beam steerability as well as a high sensitivity to the echoes from ionization around the meteors. We developed a special observation scheme which enables us to determine the orbit of individual meteors. The direction of the target is determined by comparing the echo intensity at three adjacent beams. The Doppler pulse compression technique is applied to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the echoes from the very fast target, and also to determine the range accurately. The developed scheme was applied to the observation made during the Leonid meteor storm on November 18, 1998 (JST). Estimated orbital distribution seems to suggest that the very weak meteors detected by the MU radar are dominated by sporadic meteors rather than the stream meteors associated with the Leonids storm.

A Rayleigh lidar (laser radar) system was developed and is now working well for temperature observations of the middle atmosphere at Poker Flat Research Range near Fairbanks, Alaska (65.1 N, 147.5 W). A comparison of lidar data and balloon sonde data showed good agreement in overlapped altitudes. The atmospheric fluctuations are detected in the temperature profiles obtained by the Rayleigh lidar and these are useful for the study of gravity waves. A Rayleigh Doppler lidar for wind measurements of the middle atmosphere is under the phase of development. The expected accuracy in measurements of horizontal winds up to an altitude of 60 km is smaller than 6 m/s in 2 hours observation. The system will be operated at Poker Flat after the completion of development. The combination of these lidars and radars installed at Poker Flat, give us chances of simultaneous observations of the structure and dynamics of the atmosphere in broad range of altitudes. Here, we give descriptions of the Rayleigh lidar and the Rayleigh Doppler lidar for the observations of the Arctic middle atmosphere at Poker Flat.

This paper analyses the performance of a joint receiving structure for DS-CDMA communications systems. To reduce undesirable performance degradation due to the multiple access interferences and the near-far problem in multipath fading channel environment, this paper exploits the receiving structure for the multiuser communication composed of a beamformer-RAKE receiver and a decorrelating multiuser detector. The proposed DS-CDMA receiving structure mitigates the performance impairment invoked from the noise enhancement and reveals less computational complexity by utilizing the multipath temporal combiner prior to accessing the decorrelating detection. Also an efficient block Toeplitz inversion technique using the matrix Levinson polynomials is introduced to further diminish the computational burden encountered from applying the decorrelating multiuser detection process as in usual. Simulation results are conducted to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed multiuser detection structure in multipath fading CDMA channel.

In this paper, we present our work on the design of a new FPGA architecture targeted for high-performance bit-serial pipeline datapath. Bit-parallel systems require large amount of routing resource which is especially critical in using FPGAs. Their device utilization and operation frequency become low because of large routing penalty. Whereas bit-serial circuits are very efficient in routing, therefore are able to achieve a very high logic utilization. Our proposed FPGA architecture is designed taking into account the structure of bit-serial circuits to optimize the logic and routing architecture. Our FPGA guarantees near 100% logic utilization with a straightforward place and route tool due to high routability of bit-serial circuits and simple routing interconnect architecture. The FPGA chip core which we designed consists of around 200k transistors on 3.5 mm square substrate using 0.5 µm 2-metal CMOS process technology.

Conventional multiuser interference canceling is always done in the uplink. In this paper, a novel multiuser interference canceling scheme is introduced. It can be used in the downlink of the TDD-CDMA systems. The multiuser interference canceling is done through the joint optimization of both the spreading and despreading waveform for different users, instead of the despreading code only. The idea is to take the advantages of exploitation, rather than mitigation, of the multipath propagation effects. In TDD-CDMA systems, the channel parameter of the downlink can be estimated from the uplink. We can calculate the spreading and despreading code by using the instantaneous channel parameters, so they can accommodate to the characteristic of the multipath channel. The maximum receive signal to interference plus noise ration (SINR) criterion is used to optimize the spreading and despreading code. An iteration algorithm is given to create the optimal spreading and despreading code. Numerical results show that our scheme can greatly decrease the multiple access interference (MAI), hence greatly increase the SINR, compared with the conventional spreading code such as Gold code. Numerical results of the proposed scheme assuming different number of active users, Doppler frequency and coefficient estimation error are also given.

It is known that cycle slip due to frequency selective fading causes a burst error by symbol deletion or insertion, and has a serious effect on mobile radio communication systems. In this paper, first, we show that phase rotating modulation is suitable for code synchronization error detection. Next, we consider a code synchronization controller using correlation estimator of received sequence, and the controller combines the estimator with 2π/3-shifted modulation to construct a new code synchronization error control scheme as a cycle slip cancelling system. Furthermore, we apply the scheme to the multilevel trellis coded modulation (TCM). Finally, computer simulation results confirm that proposed scheme is capable of code synchronization error correction.

In visual servoing, most studies are concerned with robotic application with known objects. In this paper, the problem of controlling a motion by visual servoing around an unknown object is addressed. In this case, the approach is interpreted as an initial step towards a perception goal of an unmodeled object. The main goal is to perform motion with regard to the object in order to discover several viewpoint of the object. An adaptive visual servoing scheme is proposed to perform such task. The originality of our work is based on the choice and extraction of visual features in accordance with motions to be performed. The notion of invariant feature is introduced to control the navigational task around the unknown object. During experimentation, a cartesian robot connected to a real time vision system is used. A CCD camera is mounted on the end effector of the robot. The experimental results present a linkage of desired motion around different kind of objects.

In 1996, Chiu and Hsu proposed a multi-role-based access control (MRBAC) policy. Nevertheless, the Chiu-Hsu scheme can be further enforced by role list, union, and intersection (i. e. containment) to deal with the problems regarding the MRBAC and the object role with different security ranks. The author presents an improvement of the Chiu-Hsu scheme using more detailed list structure. This improvement offers some significant advantages.
