  • Modified Kernel RLS-SVM Based Multiuser Detection over Multipath Channels

    For suppressing inter symbol interference, the support vector machine mutliuser detector (SVM-MUD) was adopted as a nonlinear method in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) signals transmitted through multipath channels. To solve the problems of the complexity of SVM-MUD model and the number of support vectors, based on recursive least squares support vector machine (RLS-SVM) and Riemannian geometry, a new algorithm for nonlinear multiuser detector is proposed. The algorithm introduces the forgetting factor to get the support vectors at the first training samples, then, uses Riemannian geometry to train the support vectors again and gets less improved support vectors. Simulation results illustrated that the algorithm simplifies SVM-MUD model at the cost of only a little more bit error rate and decreases the computational complexity. At the same time, the algorithm has an excellent effect on suppressing multipath interference.

    The authors have established new switching architecture of all optical WDM network suitable for the application of video transmission. In this paper, emphasis is put on a setup of a wavelength connection based on contiguous wave-band pool and we have proposed new Wave-Band Routing and Assignment (WBRA) method which provides simple switching and high speed wavelength assignment. Assuming the environment without wavelength convertor, our wave-band switching scheme is applied to several network topologies for performance evaluation. Then effectiveness and feasibility of this scheme are confirmed from a viewpoint of the number of required wavelengths. Simulation results indicate that our proposal scheme attains lower number of required wavelengths as compared to the fixed wave-band scheme. Assuming to use wavelength convertors, we have also evaluated the situation that the number of hops is restricted.

  • Theory for the Design of a Filter Having One Cross Coupling Path to Realize Transmission Zeros

    A general circuit model of a filter having one cross coupling path is analyzed, and a new theory is developed for the design of a filter with transmission zeros in its stopband. By using the derived formulas, the reactance element values in the cross coupling path are determined readily. The transmission zeros can thus be assigned at desired frequencies. Various design examples are provided, together with simulated results, which validate the proposed theory.

    Multiple access interference and near-far effect cause the performance of the conventional single user detector in DS/CDMA systems to degrade. Due to high complexity of the optimum multiuser detector, suboptimal multiuser detectors with less complexity and reasonable performance have received considerable attention. In this paper we apply the classic and a new modified genetic algorithm for multiuser detection of DS/CDMA signals. It is shown that the classic genetic algorithm (GA) reaches an error floor at high signal to noise ratios (SNR) while the performance of proposed modified GA is much better than the classic one and is comparable to the optimum detector with much less complexity. The results hold true for AWGN and fading channels. We also describe another GA called as meta GA to find the optimum parameters of the modified GA. We compare the performance of proposed method with the other detectors used in CDMA.

    We have already proposed a carrier power control scheme of OFDM that makes it possible to improve the bit error rate characteristic. However, the data on the lost carriers by the severe fading or large additive noise can't be recovered by only this power control scheme. In this paper, a method of transmission power control of OFDM carriers combined with data spreading scheme in the frequency domain is proposed. In the proposed system, transmission power of each carrier is controlled so as to maximize the average signal to noise ratio of the data symbols after de-spreading the signals from DFT. As the results of computer simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed system can improve the bit error rate characteristics under multi-path channel.

  • A New Synchronization Algorithm Exploiting Cyclostationarity for OFDM Systems in Multipath Environment

    Carrier frequency and symbol timing errors may greatly degrade the performance of the orthogonal frequency division mulitplexing (OFDM) system, especially in multipath environment. In this paper, we explore the cyclostationarity of OFDM signals, which only relies on second order statistics, to estimate the synchronization offset. First, a coarse carrier frequency offset estimator for multipath environment is developed using the second order statistics of the received OFDM signal. It has a wide capture range though not accurate. Second, we introduce a new synchronization algorithm based on cyclostationarity and matched filter theories, which can get the maximal estimation SNR in multipath environment. Both estimators utilize channel state information to achieve better estimation performance and are non-pilot aided. They can be combined to form a whole OFDM synchronizer for multipath environment. Finally, simulations confirm the performance of the estimation algorithm.

  • Multi-Code Multi-Carrier CDMA Modulation with Adaptive Bit-Loading for VDSL Modems

    This paper presents a new modulation scheme for Very-High Speed Digital Subscriber Lines (VDSL) modem, featuring a Multi-Code Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC2-CDMA) modulation. The system takes advantage from both the CDMA modulation and the Multi-Carrier transmission, and furthermore the channel throughput is increased adopting a multi-code approach. Starting from an overview of this novel scheme, encompassing the transmitter, channel and receiver description, a brief review of the equalization techniques is also considered and a proper bit-loading algorithm is derived to find out the achievable overall channel rate. The aim of this paper, besides introducing this novel scheme, is to demonstrate its suitability for a VDSL environment, where the achievable channel rate represents a real challenge. By means of a further optimisation, a general improvement of the system performance with respect to the standardized Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation is also demonstrated.

  • AlGaN/GaN HEMT X-Band Frequency Doublers with Novel Fundamental Frequency Reflector Scheme

    The first implementations of X-band AlGaN/GaN HEMT single-ended frequency doublers are presented in this paper. Two types of fundamental frequency signal reflector schemes have been demonstrated for the frequency doubler application. Open-circuited quarter-wavelength microstrip line at the fundamental frequency is utilized for the reflector in a conventional way. In the other architecture a printed antenna is employed as a radiator as well as a novel fundamental frequency reflector. A microstrip rectangular patch antenna operating at the second harmonic frequency of the doubler was designed and integrated with AlGaN/GaN HEMT based on active integrated antenna design concept. Using AlGaN/GaN HEMT with 1 mm gate periphery, two 4 to 8 GHz frequency doublers were designed by the described design methodologies, fabricated, and tested. For the conventional frequency doubler, a conversion gain of 0.6 dB and with an output power of 15 dBm was observed. A conversion gain of 5 dB and an output power of 25 dBm with embedded antenna gain were achieved at a drain voltage of 12 V for the doubler integrated with the patch antenna.

  • Fingerprint Restoration Using Digital Reaction-Diffusion System and Its Evaluation

    This paper presents an algorithm for fingerprint image restoration using Digital Reaction-Diffusion System (DRDS). The DRDS is a model of a discrete-time discrete-space nonlinear reaction-diffusion dynamical system, which is useful for generating biological textures, patterns and structures. This paper focuses on the design of a fingerprint restoration algorithm that combines (i) a ridge orientation estimation technique using an iterative coarse-to-fine processing strategy and (ii) an adaptive DRDS having a capability of enhancing low-quality fingerprint images using the estimated ridge orientation. The phase-only image matching technique is employed for evaluating the similarity between an original fingerprint image and a restored image. The proposed algorithm may be useful for person identification applications using fingerprint images.

  • Multistage Interference Canceller Combined with Adaptive Array Antenna for DS-CDMA System

    In order to increase the capacity of a DS-CDMA system, several kinds of interference suppression techniques have been studied, such as multiple access interference (MAI) cancellers and adaptive array antennas. However, their performance tends to degrade in high traffic-load situations. To compensate for the degradation, a receiver cascading an adaptive array antenna and a multistage parallel interference canceller (PIC) is studied in this paper. This receiver first uses an adaptive array antenna to suppress interference signals spatially, and uses a multistage PIC to suppress in-beam interference effectively. The performance of the cascaded receiver is evaluated with two schemes for antenna weight generation by computer simulations assuming a Rayleigh-distributed L-path channel. When antenna weights are generated for each user by an LMS algorithm, the cascaded receiver has shown better performance at the cost of a large number of pilot symbols and symbol by symbol weight update. Its performance degradation is 2.8 dB at the BER of 10-4 even when the number of users increases from one to 24. On the other hand, when antenna weights are generated for each path by a DMI algorithm, its performance is degraded due to the inaccurate weight generation which occurs when the SINR of the desired signal is small. This degradation can be mitigated by using all signals of the desired user received by all antenna patterns of desired user for RAKE combining when the difference among arrival angles of the paths of the desired user is small.

    This paper describes the experimental approach of the Direct Optical Switching (DOS) CDM Radio-on-Fiber (RoF) system. Improved carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) performance by using an Optical Polarity Reversing Correlator (OPRC) in comparison to using a single switch decoder is experimentally obtained. In addition, CIR performance deterioration due to degradation of the extinction ratio of the optical switch decoder is clarified from the theoretical and experimental viewpoints. Finally, we confirmed that CIR performance is improved more by using an M-sequence whose weight is even numbered than by using an odd numbered one.

    This paper proposes a real-time scheduling mechanism for web server that finds a way to solve so-called priority inversion problem between tasks handling real-time web requests with higher priorities and tasks with lower priorities like HTML requests. The priority inversion problem of web server stems from operating two independent schedulers, web scheduler and kernel scheduler, without exchanging scheduling information or considering the requirement of each other. In the proposed mechanism, two schedulers are integrated in a kernel and the integrated scheduler schedules real-time web tasks and other application tasks together based on their priorities. Since the unified scheduler sees all tasks simultaneously in system, it can schedule the tasks with their absolute priorities and reduce the execution delay caused by the priority inversion. The proposed mechanism provides web server with a better chance to efficiently serve real-time web requests. The feasibility and performance of the proposed mechanism are empirically shown on an embedded system.

    For common-mode noise current reduction, a CMC (Common Mode Choke) is widely used in signal transmission line circuits consisting of a ground and two conductors (a balanced transmission line). However, a common-mode noise current reduction characteristic is not clearly analyzed yet in the case that a CMC is inserted in a balanced transmission line. In this paper we propose the calculation method of CMC insertion losses and derive an equation to analyze the common-mode current characteristics of a balanced transmission line with a CMC inserted. The analyzed frequency range is from 100 kHz to 100 MHz. We conclude that in the frequency range up to 30 MHz: (1) the proposed insertion loss calculation method is useful for analyzing CMC insertion losses in differential-mode and in common-mode; (2) the derived circuit equation can be applied for analyzing the common-mode current characteristics of a balanced transmission line locally unbalanced with conditions of a CMC inserted; (3) the proposed calculation method may give the expected results that a CMC should be placed in a signal source side of an unbalanced point of a pair-cable for reduction of common-mode currents; and (4) if it is placed in a terminal (or load) side of an unbalanced point, there is no effect, or rather common-mode currents are increased by the insertion of a CMC.

  • Machine Learning via Multiresolution Approximation

    We consider the classification problem as a problem of approximation of a given training set. This approximation is constructed in a multiresolution framework, and organized in a tree-structure. It allows efficient training and query, both in constant time per training point. The proposed method is efficient for low-dimensional classification and regression estimation problems with large data sets.

    A Cyclotron Wave Converter, having decreased magnetic intensity is discussed. Two microwave cavities with uniform and quadruple (or six-pole) electric field in the gap of interaction are used to transform microwave power into the kinetic power of the electron beam fast cyclotron wave. As a result of it, magnetic flux density occurs in two (or three) times lower. The latter is very important to create a compact, powerful and efficient microwave/DC power converters operating at different frequencies including short centimetric and long millimetric wavebands.

    Full-duplex transmission of 60.0 GHz and 59.6 GHz millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals of 155.52-Mbit/s differential phase shift keying (DPSK) data, radio-on-fiber (ROF) signals over 25-km-long standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) is experimentally demonstrated for the first time using a single 2-RF-port electroabsorption transceiver (EAT). The simplification of base stations (BSs) is strongly required to realize cost-effective and high-reliability mm-wave wireless access. This single EAT detects a C-band ROF signal modulated by a mm-wave downlink signal and simultaneously modulates the L-band optical carrier by a mm-wave uplink signal. The BS mainly consists of the EAT, leading to a simple and low-cost BS. Optical pilot tones and optical bandpass filters are used for photonic downconversion and photonic upconversion, to convert frequencies between mm-wave signals and intermediate frequency (IF) signals in the optical domain. With the use of optical conversions, these signals have no significant fading problems. The simultaneous transmission of both up- and downlinks has been achieved with the BER of less than 10-9. Also the fading problems due to the fiber dispersion of photonic conversions are analyzed mathematically in this paper. The single-EAT BS will become a promising candidate for a ROF access system.

    We report on the first demonstration of single sideband (SSB) modulated time stretch system. In addition, we present an analytical model relating the system performance to the phase and amplitude mismatches in the SSB modulator. The results show that, fortuitously, the system is tolerant to such mismatches. In particular, using commercially available components,the dispersion induced power penalty can be kept below 2.5 dB over 4-20 GHz bandwidth for any stretch factor. The experiments demonstrate 120 Gsample/s real-time capture of a 20 GHz SSB-modulated microwave signal.

    The technique of replica placement has been extensively employed to improve client perceived performance and disperse server workload. In this paper, we study some well-known algorithms of replica placement on the network and observe the logarithmic relationship between replica number and total access cost. Numerous simulations are done and it is found that some replica algorithms obey the logarithmic relationship with high correlation coefficients. A logrithmic function is proposed about replica number and total access cost. The logarithmic relationship is applied to the minimum facility problem and a function is deduced to get the optimal replica number.

  • Model Selection with Componentwise Shrinkage in Orthogonal Regression

    In the problem of determining the major frequency components of a signal disturbed by noise, a model selection criterion has been proposed. In this paper, the criterion has been extended to cover a penalized cost function that yields a componentwise shrinkage estimator, and it exhibited a consistent model selection when the proposed criterion was used. Then, a simple numerical simulation was conducted, and it was found that the proposed criterion with an empirically estimated componentwise shrinkage estimator outperforms the original criterion.

    The fiber-optic sectorized remote antenna system by using the radio frequency (RF) optical transmission technique was promising for increasing the number of subscribers in the millimeter-wave broadband wireless access (MMW BWA) networks. To realize the cost-effectiveness of the fiber-optic sectorized remote antenna system covering four areas, we reached the conclusion that the best multiplexing schemes were the sub-carrier division multiplexing (SCM) of the intermediate frequency (IF) signals of 2 GHz for the down link, the coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) with the IF signals optical transmission for the up link and 1.3/1.55 µm-WDM for multiplexing the down link and the up link. In addition, the target specifications of this SCM-CWDM system were described, and the designs of the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) and the third order intermodulation distortion (IM3) were examined.
