This paper describes a vision system with dual viewing angles, i. e., wide and narrow viewing angles, and a scheme of user-friendly speech dialogue environment based on the vision system. The wide viewing angle provides a wide viewing field for wide range motion tracking, and the narrow viewing angle is capable of following a target in wide viewing field to take the image of the target with sufficient resolution. For a fast and robust motion tracking, modified motion energy (MME) and existence energy (EE) are defined to detect the motion of the target and extract the motion region at the same time. Instead of using a physical device such as a foot switch commonly used in speech dialogue systems, the begin/end of an utterance is detected from the movement of user's mouth in our system. Without recognizing the movement of lips directly, the shape variation of the region between lips is tracked for more stable recognition of the span of a dialogue. The tracking speed is about 10 frames/sec when no recognition is performed and about 5 frames/sec when both tracking and recognition are performed without using any special hardware.

Fractals provide a good description of natural scenes and objects based on their statistically self-similar property. They are also used to discriminate natural or man-made objects because natural objects have a better fitting to the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) model than artificial objects. Sea clutter as natural phenomena well fit to the fBm to induce little error. On the other hand, targets as man-made objects induce much more error because they frequently deviate from the fBm model. Therefore, the fractal error has a good characteristic to detect targets buried in clutter. We modified the fractal error defined by Cooper to be suitable for radar image processing. For the X-band radar image, the performance of our proposed method is comparable to that of the Cooper's method. For the millimeter wave (MMW) radar images, our method is better than the Cooper's one.

Electromagnetic field diffracted by conducting circular disk and circular hole in the conducting plate is formulated by the method of Kobayashi potential. The field is expressed by linear combination of functions which satisfy the required boundary conditions except on the disk or hole. Thus the functions may be regarded as eigen functions of the configuration. By imposing the remaining boundary conditions, we can derive the matrix equations for the expansion coefficients. It may be verified readily that each eigen function satisfies edge conditions for induced current on the disk and for aperture field distribution on the hole. It may also be verified that the solutions for the disk and the hole satisfy Babinet's principle. Matrix elements of the equations for the expansion coefficients are given by two kinds of infinite integrals and the series solutions for these integrals are derived. The validity of these expressions are verified numerically by comparing with the results obtained from direct numerical integrations.

In this paper, a quite general systematic procedure is presented for defining incremental field contributions, that may provide effective tools for describing a wide class of scattering and diffraction phenomena at any aspect, whthin a unitary, self-consistent framework. This is based on a generalization of the localization process for cylindrical canonical problems with elementary source illumination and arbitrary observation aspects. In particular, it is shown that the spectral integral formulation of the exact solution may also be represented as a spatial integral convolution along the axis of the cylinder. Its integrand is then directly used to define the relevant incremental field contribution. This procedure, that will be referred to as a ITD (Incremental Theory of Diffraction) Fourier transform convolution localization process, is explicitly applied to both wedge and circular cylinder canonical configurations, to define incremental diffiraction and scattering contributions, respectively. These formulations are asymptotically approximated to find closed form high-frequency expression for the incremental field contributions. This generalization of the ITD lacalization process may provide a quite general, systematic procedure to find incremental field contributions that explicitly satisfy reciprocity and naturally lead to the UTD ray field representation, when it is applicable.

In this paper, scattering problem of the directional coupler for the slab waveguides are analyzed by the mode-matching method in the sense of least squares for the lowest order even TE mode incidence. It is considered that the analysis of this coupler for the slab waveguides presents the fundamental data to design the directional coupler for the three dimensional waveguides. This directional coupler is composed of three parallel slabs which are placed at equal space in the dielectric medium. Respective slabs are core regions of three respective waveguides. The periodic groove structure of finite extent is formed on the both surfaces of core region of the central waveguide among them. The power of incident TE mode is coupled to other two waveguides through periodic groove structure. The coupled TE mode propagates in the other waveguides to the same or opposite direction for the direction of incident mode which propagates in the waveguide having periodic structure when the Bragg condition is selected appropriately. The scattered field of each region of this directional coupler is described by the superpositions of the plane waves with bandlimited spectra, respectively. These approximate wave functions are determined by the minimization of the mean-square boundary residual. This method results in the simultaneous Fredholm type integral equations of the second kind for these spectra. The first order approximate solutions of the integral equations are derived and the coupling efficiency and scattered fields are analyzed on the basis of those solutions in this paper.

A family of nonce-based authentication and key distribution protocols based on the trusted third-party model are proposed which are not only efficient on the view points of computation and communication, but also secure against on-line and off-line password guessing attacks. A new concept of implicit or indirect challenge-response authentication which can be used to combine the processes of identify authentication and data integrity assurance during key distribution and to make the entire protocol be more concise and efficient is introduced in this paper. In the proposed family of protocols, specific protocol can be chosen such that the secure session key to be distributed is selected by specific participant in the protocol. Detailed security analyses of every protocols are given.

The integral kernel expansion method is applied to an analysis of scattering of magnetostatic forward volume waves (MSFVWs) by an array with any number of metal strips. In this method, first the integral kernel of the Fourier integral is expanded in terms of orthogonal polynomials to obtain moment equations. Then a system of algebraic equations is derived by applying the Galerkin's method. In the process, interaction between strips is naturally taken into account and real current distributions on the strips are determined such that boundary conditions are satisfied. Calculus confirmation through the energy conservation principle shows that numerical results are quite satisfactory. A comparison shows that theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental ones except the vicinity of lower and upper limits of the MSFVW band. It is shown that an infinite number of propagation modes is excited even if a wave of single mode is incident. Dependence of the scattering on dimension of arrays and on frequency and mode of an incident wave is obtained.

A new optical wavelength demultiplexer using quasi-phase-matched sum-frequency-generation (QPM-SFG) is proposed. The device consists of an optical deflector using Pockels effect and a nonlinear crystal with a periodic structure. The demultiplexing characteristics of the device composed of a LiNbO3 crystal are analyzed theoretically. Wavelength demultiplexing can be made simply by changes in the electric field applied to the deflector.

The H-polarized diffraction by a wedge consisting of perfect conductor and lossless dielectric is investigated by employing the dual integral equations. Its physical optics diffraction coefficients are expressed in a finite series of cotangent functions weighted by the Fresnel reflection coefficients. A correction rule is extracted from the difference between the diffraction coefficients of the physical optics field and those of the exact solution to a perfectly conducting wedge. The angular period of the cotangent functions is changed to satisfy the edge condition at the tip of the wedge, and the poles of the cotangent functions are relocated to cancel out the incident field in the artificially complementary region. Numerical results assure that the presented correction is highly effective for reducing the error posed in the physical optics solution.

    1428-1433

Polarization transformation characteristics of a statified slab consisting of uniaxial chiral layers are investigated. It is assumed that a plane electromagnetic wave with arbitrary polarization is normally incident from free space on the stratified slab, which is located on a dielectric substrate. Note that the electric field inside a uniaxial chiral layer is expressed as a sum of four plane waves with different wavenumbers. The wavenumbers are found by seeking non-trivial solutions of the constitutive relations with Maxwell's equations. The electric field components of the transmitted and reflected waves can be obtained from a chainmatrix formalism. The powers and the Stokes parameters of the two waves are represented in terms of their electric field components. As is well known, the Stokes parameters uniquely describe every possible state of polarization of a plane wave. Numerical results are presented for two types of uniaxial chiral structure. The cross- and co-polarized powers and the Stokes parameters of the transmitted and reflected waves are computed for the incident plane wave of linear polarization. The results demonstrate a significant polarization transformation of the transmitted wave. Then it is shown that the stratified slab can be used as efficient polarization-transformation transmission filters active at some frequency band.

This paper proposes a general expansion architecture for constructing large-scale multicast ATM switches with any type of small multicast switch, called the multicast Universal Multistage Interconnection Network (multicast UniMIN). The proposed architecture consists of a buffered distribution network that can perform cell routing and replication simultaneously, and a column of output switch modules (OSMs). The adoption of channel grouping and virtual first-in-first-out (FIFO) buffers results in high delay/throughput performance, and the distributed lookup table scheme for multicast addressing greatly reduces the size of a single lookup table. Analytical and simulation results show that high delay/throughput performance is obtained for both unicast and multicast traffic, and the proposed architecture yields an even better performance for multicast traffic than for unicast traffic. In addition, the multicast UniMIN switch has such good features as modular expandability, simple hardware, and no internal speed-up operation.

This paper analyzes mechanisms of radiated emissions from multilayer printed circuit boards (PCBs) and presents a model to describe the characteristics of such radiation. The radiation mechanism from a four-layer PCB, including the internal power and ground planes, is investigated using a time-domain magnetic field measurement near the PCB. Measurement of the waveform indicates that the main source of radiation is in the power distribution planes. To investigate the characteristics of the radiation from the power distribution, the S21s of the board are measured; the board impedance and the transmission characteristics of the power distribution planes are found to be directly related to the S21 between the two points in the board. The results indicate that the power distribution acts as a transmission line at frequencies higher than 100 MHz. A model that can explain well the radiation properties of these planes treats them as a parallel-plate transmission line interconnected by decoupling circuit comprising a decoupling capacitor and interconnect inductance. From the transmission line theory it is deduced that the line resonance gives rise to strong radiated emissions. The interconnect inductance is an important factor in determining the radiation characteristics.

In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional (2-D) least-squares lattice (LSL) algorithm for the general case of the autoregressive (AR) model with an asymmetric half-plane (AHP) coefficient support. The resulting LSL algorithm gives both order and space recursions for the 2-D deterministic normal equations. The size and shape of the coefficient support region of the proposed lattice filter can be chosen arbitrarily. Furthermore, the ordering of the support signal can be assigned arbitrarily. Finally, computer simulation for modeling a texture image is demonstrated to confirm the proposed model gives rapid convergence.

In recently year, the analysis of power management becomes more important. It is difficult to obtain the maximum power because this is NP-complete. For an n-input circuit, there are 22n different input patterns to be considered. There are two major methods for this problem. First method is to generate input patterns to obtain the maximal power by simulating these generated patterns. This method is called pattern based. The other one uses probability method to estimate the power density of each node of a circuit to calculate the maximal power. In this paper, we use a pattern based method to estimate the maximal power. This method is better than that of probability for the simulation of power activity. In practical applications, these generated patterns can be applied and observe the activity of a circuit. These simulated data can be used to examined the critical paths for performance optimization. A simulated annealing algorithm is proposed to search input patterns for maximum power. Firstly, it transforms this problem into an optimization problem to adapt the simulated annealing method. In this method, there are three strategies for generating the next input patterns, called neighborhood. In the first strategy, it generates the next input pattern by changing the status of all input nodes. In the second strategy, some input nodes are selected and changed randomly.

We consider methods to locate sync words in packet or frame transmission over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. Our starting point is the maximization of the probability of correctly locating the sync word. We extend Massey's original result to the specific synchronization problem, where the sync words is prefixed to the data stream and each packet is preceded by idle transmission or additive white Gaussian noise. We give simulation results for several interesting sync words such as Barker sequences of length 7 and 13 and a sync word of length 17 with good cross-correlation properties. One of the conclusions is that the newly derived formula for the probability of correctly locating the sync word enables the reduction of the false sync detection probability.

This paper presents a new upper bound on overall bit error rate (BER) for a concatenated code which consists of an inner convolutional code and an outer interleaved Reed-Solomon code. The upper bound on BER is derived based on a lower bound on the effective minimum distance of the concatenated code. This upper bound can be used for the cases when the interleaver size is small such that the conventional upper bound is not applicable.

Concatenated codes have many remarkable properties from both the theoretical and practical viewpoints. The minimum distance of a concatenated code is at least the product of the minimum distances of an outer code and an inner code. In this paper, we shall examine some cases that the minimum distance of concatenated codes is beyond the lower bound and get the tighter bound or the true minimum distance of concatenated codes by using the complete weight enumerator of the outer code and the Hamming weight enumerator of the inner code. Furthermore we propose a new decoding method based on Reddy-Robinson algorithm by using the decoding method beyond the BCH bound.

Turbo codes have fascinated many coding researchers because of thier near-Shannon-limit error correction performance. In this paper, we discuss multi-dimensional turbo codes which are parallel concatenation of multiple constituent codes. The average upper bound to bit error probability of multidimensional turbo codes is derived. The bound shows that the interleaver gains of this kind of codes are larger than that of conventional two-dimensional turbo codes. Simplified structures of multi-dimensional turbo encoder and decoder are proposed for easier implementation. Simulation results show that for a given interleaver size, by increasing the dimension, great performance improvement can be obtained.

Irreducible components of canonical graphs for second order spectral null constraints at a rational submultiple of the symbol frequency fsk/n are studied where fs is the symbol frequency. We show that if n is prime then a canonical graph consists of disjoint irreducible components. We also show that the number of irreducible components of a canonical graphs is finite if n is prime. For the case n = 2 and p O mod n, all aperiodic irreducible components are identified explicitly where p is a parameter of a canonical graph.
