  • An A* Search in Sentential Matching for Question Answering

    In this paper, we propose a method to introduce an A* search control into sentential matching mechanism for question-answering systems, in order to reduce the response time while the accuracy of the answer is preserved. The question answering is a new technology to retrieve not relevant documents but the answer(s) directly by combining several methodology including IR and IE. One of the essential processes is the sentential matching between the user's query and each sentence in documents. In general, in order to obtain matching score precisely in higher resolution, we need some processes with higher computational costs. We therefore introduce an A* search in which both the processing cost and the resolution of matching score are took into account simultaneously. According to the experiments in NTCIR3 QAC1 Task1, the system with the controlled search is 3.4-8.5 times faster than the system with no control.

    The concept of an Ω-matrix was introduced by Nishi in order to estimate the number of solutions of a resistive circuit containing active elements. He gave a finite characterization by means of four conditions which are all satisfied if and only if the matrix under investigation is an Ω-matrix. In this note we show that none of the four conditions can be omitted.

    Frequency-domain representation of the well-known time-domain rake combining for the antenna diversity reception of DS-CDMA signals is derived. Two receiver structures using frequency-domain rake combining are presented. Frequency-domain rake combining can alleviate the complexity problem of the time-domain rake arising from too many paths in a severe frequency selective fading channel at the cost of guard interval insertion. The results shown in this paper show a possibility that a DS-CDMA approach still remain to be promising for broadband wireless access technique.

    Treating an averaged multiple-trials data or non-averaged single-trial data is a main approach in recent topics on applying independent component analysis (ICA) to neurobiological signal processing. By taking an average, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is increased but some important information such as the strength of an evoked response and its dynamics will be lost. The single-trial data analysis, on the other hand, can avoid this problem but the SNR is very poor. In this study, we apply ICA to both non-averaged single-trial data and averaged multiple-trials data to determine the properties and advantages of both. Our results show that the analysis of averaged data is effective for seeking the response and dipole location of evoked fields. The non-averaged single-trial data analysis efficiently identifies the strength and dynamic component such as α-wave. For determining both the range of evoked strength and dipole location, an analysis of averaged limited-trials data is better option.

    In this paper, we propose new physical design techniques to reduce crosstalk noise and crosstalk-induced delay variations caused in a nanometer-scale system-on-a-chip (SoC). We have almost eliminated the coupling effect between signal wires by simply optimizing parameters for the automatic place and route methodology. Our approach consists of two techniques, (1) A 3-D optimization technique for tuning the routing grid configuration both in the horizontal and vertical directions. (2) A co-optimization technique for tuning the cell utilization ratio and the routing grid simultaneously. Experiments on the design of an image processing circuit fabricated in a 0.13 µm CMOS process with six layers of copper interconnect show that crosstalk noise is almost eliminated. From the results of a static timing analysis considering the worst-case crosstalk condition, the longest path delay is decreased by about 15% maximum if technique (1) is used, and by about 7% maximum if technique (2) is used. The 7-15% delay reduction has been achieved without process improvement, and this reduction corresponds to between 1/4 and 1/2 generation of process progress.

    To develop ultra high density magnetic recording systems, a quasi-static system with a reciprocating medium motion against a stand still head was developed for a read/write tester. Double-layered perpendicular recording media and merged GMR heads assembled on a conventional head-gimbal assembly (HGA) were applied to evaluate the read/write performances. A smooth sliding contact motion was achieved, however, the head-to-medium spacing was varied depending on the head motion direction. The spacing in the reverse running direction of the conventional head slider seems to be smaller than that of the flying height in a high-speed spin stand. A merged ring head was suitable for perpendicular magnetic recording in the case of the reverse direction sliding.

    The bit error rate (BER) for an uplink multicell multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) system in Nakagami-m fading channels is derived and expressed in the form of a single integral. The result is obtained without the approximation for the ratio of the interference power from other-cell to the power from the user-of-interest. Numerical results demonstrate the impacts of other-cell interference and power control errors on the BER.

    In this paper, a novel algorithm is presented for blind estimation of the symbol timing and frequency offset for OFDM systems. Time-varying frequency-selective Rayleigh fading multipath channel is considered, which is characterized by the power delay profile and time-varying scattering function and has high reliability for real-world mobile environment. The estimators exploit the intrinsic structures of OFDM signals and rely on the second-order moment rather than the probability distribution function of the received signals. They are totally optimum in sense of minimum mean-square-error and can be implemented easily. In addition, we have presented an improved approach which not only preserves the merits of previously proposed method, but also makes the estimation range of the frequency offset cover the entire subcarrier spacing of OFDM signals and the timing estimator be independent of the frequency offset.

  • Effects of Grain Size Distribution in Recording Layer on SNR and Thermal Stability in Double Layered Perpendicular Media

    In this work, micromagnetic simulations of writing and reading processes in a perpendicular system including a single pole head and recording media with soft underlayer (SUL) have been performed. The noise contribution from the recording layer increased with increasing grain size distribution of the recording layer but that from soft underlayer remained almost a constant at a given linear density. Details of the noise from the soft underlayer will be discussed. Also thermal decay over a long time scale of the recorded bits was investigated by the Langevin equation and the time-temperature scaling method. It was found that at the linear density of 1058 kfci narrower grain size distribution in the recording layer even in the same average grain size is very important in the point of thermal decay than expectation.

  • A Collaborative Personal Repository System and Its Information Retrieval Scheme

    A framework is described for a peer-to-peer information exchange system, and a collaborative information retrieval (IR) scheme for the system is proposed. The aims of the system include smooth knowledge and information management to activate organizations or communities. Conventional server-centric systems are weak because they create information-providing bottlenecks. Accordingly, the proposed framework targets the collaborative inter-working of personal repositories that accumulate per-user information, and accept and service requests. Issues concerning the framework are addressed. One issue is the retrieval of information from another's personal repository; the retrieval criteria of a system are tightly personalized for its user. The system is assumed to employ a vector space model with a concept-base as its IR mechanism. The vector space on one system is very different from that on another system. Another issue is the automated control of the information-providing criteria. This paper presents solutions to the first problem. To achieve IR that provides satisfactory results to a user requiring information from another's personal repository, we need vector space equalization to compensate for the differences in the vector spaces of the personal repositories. The paper presents a vector space equalization scheme, the automated relevance feedback scheme, that compensates the differences in the vector spaces of the personal repositories. We implement the scheme as a system and evaluate its performance using documents on the Internet.

  • Determining Indexing Strings with Statistical Analysis

    Determining indexing strings is an important factor in information retrieval. Ideally, the strings should be words that represent documents or queries. Although any single word may be the first candidate for indexing strings for an English corpus, it may not be ideal due to the existence of compound nouns, which are often good indexing strings, and which often depend on the genre of the corpus used. The situation is even worse in Japanese or Chinese where the words are not separated by spaces. In this paper, we propose a method of determining indexing strings based on statistical analysis. The novel features of our method are to make the most of the statistical measure called "adaptation" and not to use language-dependent resources such as dictionaries and stop word lists. In evaluating our method using a Japanese test collection, we found that it actually improves the precision of information retrieval systems.

    A method for a genuinely multivariate analysis of statistical phase synchronization phenomena in empirical data is presented. It is applied to EEG data from a psychological experiment, obtaining results which indicate a possible relevance of this method in the context of cognitive science as well as in other fields.

    Power Line Communication (PLC) is very attractive for achieving high-rate in-home networks. Noise in power lines is modeled as a cyclostationary Gaussian process. In order to achieve reliable communication using power lines, effective measures including error control techniques need to be taken against this particular noise. This paper focuses its attention on an effect of turbo codes on PLC. We adopt two noise environments for examining the effect in terms of BER performance. The result of the examination provides that turbo codes have enough capability to limit the effect of the noise. It also provides that the effect depends on size of a channel interleaver. Since an effective SNR estimation scheme should be required to apply turbo codes to PLC, we also examine the effect of two SNR estimation schemes in terms of BER performance.

  • Use of Dynamic Passage Selection and Lexico-Semantic Patterns for Japanese Natural Language Question Answering

    This paper describes a practical Japanese natural language Question Answering system adopting effective selection of dynamic passages, Lexico-Semantic Patterns (LSP), and Predictive Answer Indexing. By analyzing the previous TREC QA data, we defined a dynamic passage unit and developed a passage selection method suitable for Question Answering. Using LSP, we identify the answer type of a question and detect answer candidates without any deep linguistic analyses of the texts. To guarantee a short response time, Predictive Answer Indexing is combined into our overall system architecture. As a result of the three engineering techniques, our system showed excellent performance when evaluated by mean reciprocal rank (MRR) in NTCIR-3 QAC-1.

    In wireless mobile environments, data requests based on the location of mobile clients (MCs) have increased. The requested data, called location-dependent data (LDD), may be uncertain if MCs use terms of general distance like "near". Fuzzy theory allows us to represent uncertainty without sharp boundaries. In this paper we quantify the fuzziness and propose a method for constructing the data region of LDD by the degree of the distance between LDDs' and MCs' locations. In simulation studies, we evaluate the LDD regions (LDRs) in various situations: MCs' extensive and intensive queried pattern in data regions of two "near" senses and civilized regions with regional features. Our performance evaluation shows that the number of database accesses in proposed LDRs can be reduced in each case.

    A unified linear multiuser receiver that minimizes a weighted sum of the multiple access interference (MAI) and the background noise is introduced. The proposed receiver includes the three popular linear receivers, namely the matched-filter, the decorrelating and the minimum mean-square-error receivers as special cases. Furthermore, by tuning a single weighting factor, it is possible to improve the performance of the proposed receiver over that of any of the above mentioned linear receivers.

  • In-Situ Technology for Evaluating the Stability of a Slider in 2 Dimensions

    As head-disk spacing is reduced, the effects caused by inter-molecular level interactions between head-slider and disk media are becoming a severe stability concern of head-slider's positioning in both flying height and track following directions. Therefore, there is a need to explore simple but effective methods for characterizing two dimensional (2D) stability. Ideally methods should be easy to implement in both the laboratory and in the quality control of disk drive and component manufacturing. A reading process based in-situ method is explored in this work. The method is simple and can effectively reveal the 2D stability of the head-slider in both laboratory and manufacturing environments. The results obtained also suggest that the observable sway mode vibration of the suspension can be excited earlier than the air-bearing vibration mode, when the flying height is reduced.

    Analog Hopfield neural networks (HNNs) have so far been used to solve many kinds of optimization problems, in particular, combinatorial problems such as the TSP, which can be described by an objective function and some equality constraints. When we solve a minimization problem with equality constraints by using HNNs, however, the constraints are satisfied only approximately. In this paper we propose a circuit which rigorously realizes the equality constraints and whose energy function corresponds to the prescribed objective function. We use the SPICE program to solve circuit equations corresponding to the above circuits. The proposed method is applied to several kinds of optimization problems and the results are very satisfactory.

  • Zero Crossing Statistics of Chaos-Based FM Clock Signals

    We investigate the statistical features of both random- and chaos-based FM timing signals to ascertain their applicability to digital circuits and systems. To achieve such a goal, we consider both the case of single- and two-phase logic and characterize the random variable representing, respectively, the time lag between two subsequent rising edges or between two consecutive zero-crossing points of the modulated timing signal. In particular, we determine its probability density and compute its mean value and variance for cases which are relevant for reducing Electromagnetic emissions. Finally, we address the possible problems of performance degradation in a digital system driven by a modulated timing signal and to cope with this we give some guidelines for the proper choice of the statistical properties of the modulating signals.

    Multicasting is an efficient communication tool for use in multi-point applications such as conferencing and information distribution. In ad hoc networks, node mobility causes frequent changes of network topology, and re-construction of the multicast tree in an efficient and effective manner becomes a critical issues. In case of link breakage, most of the multicast tree construction protocols available presently require either a total re-build of the tree or to reconnect a disjoined node back to the multicast tree via the shortest path which may disrupt the optimising factors, such as energy consumption, delay or cost, used in the building of the original tree. In this paper, we introduce a computationally efficient recovery algorithm which will also minimise the power consumption on the tree.
