This paper proposes a method to integrate computer specifications retrieved from multiple Web sites, to extract characteristic-data of each computer based on integrated information, and to present products suitable for a user's request. The specifications written in HTML are converted into normal forms called table structure. The quantitative attributes such as speed, capacity and dimensions are extracted by comparing them with the mean or mode of all sample data, and the qualitative ones such as kind of processor and graphics chip are extracted using knowledge provided manually. The recommended products are dynamically determined from the extracted data by a user's request and relevance feedback. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our method.

This paper addresses the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in a wavelength routed all optical network. One of the main issues is the assignment of the limited number of wavelengths over each physical fiber connection so that high aggregate capacity can be achieved. In a typical mesh topology, this problem has been shown to be NP-hard. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic based algorithm building upon one of the best known wavelength assignment algorithms proposed by Zhang and Acampora. The salient feature of the proposed algorithm is to consider the inherent multihop nature of the underlying mesh topology. We demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the complexity by an order of magnitude, while at the same time achieving significantly lower blocking probability.

This paper proposes an optical access networks that guaranteed QoS in bidirections. Our scheme is the PON (Passive Optical Network) systems using OCDM (Optical Code Division Multiplexing) technology. For the bidirectional 100 Mbps guaranteed, we examined the simple decision circuit, code length (the number of chips), the number of simultaneously accesses and transmission distance. Furthermore, we reported the results that evaluated prototype of speed-down (4 Mbps, 16 chips) for the functional check of simple decision circuit.

The first implementations of X-band AlGaN/GaN HEMT single-ended frequency doublers are presented in this paper. Two types of fundamental frequency signal reflector schemes have been demonstrated for the frequency doubler application. Open-circuited quarter-wavelength microstrip line at the fundamental frequency is utilized for the reflector in a conventional way. In the other architecture a printed antenna is employed as a radiator as well as a novel fundamental frequency reflector. A microstrip rectangular patch antenna operating at the second harmonic frequency of the doubler was designed and integrated with AlGaN/GaN HEMT based on active integrated antenna design concept. Using AlGaN/GaN HEMT with 1 mm gate periphery, two 4 to 8 GHz frequency doublers were designed by the described design methodologies, fabricated, and tested. For the conventional frequency doubler, a conversion gain of 0.6 dB and with an output power of 15 dBm was observed. A conversion gain of 5 dB and an output power of 25 dBm with embedded antenna gain were achieved at a drain voltage of 12 V for the doubler integrated with the patch antenna.

In this letter, we propose a new error protection technique for JPEG2000-coded images and also present its evaluation over an OFDM channel. The method exploits the layer structure of the JPEG2000 codestream, a data embedding technique and a forward error correcting code. The main header and data in the top layer are duplicated and protected by the error correcting code. These data are then embedded into the bottom layer for error recovery purposes. Our method offers several features: preserves the same codestream structure as the one in the JPEG2000 part 1 standard, provides multilevel error protection, and can be combined with the existing error resilience technique. Hence, the method accommodates the new requirements for wireless JPEG2000 (JPWL/JPEG2000 part 11).

This paper presents a Field-Programmable Digital Filter (FPDF) IC that employs carry-propagation-free redundant arithmetic algorithms for faster computation and multiple-valued current-mode circuit technology for high-density low-power implementation. The original contribution of this paper is to evaluate, through actual chip fabrication, the potential impact of multiple-valued current-mode circuit technology on the reduction of hardware complexity required for DSP-oriented programmable ICs. The prototype FPDF fabrication with 0.6 µm CMOS technology demonstrates that the chip area and power consumption can be reduced to 41% and 71%, respectively, compared with the standard binary logic implementation.

In this paper, a lifting implementation of variable-coefficient invertible deinterlacer with embedded motion detector is proposed. As previous works, the authors have developed invertible deinterlacing that suppresses comb-tooth artifacts caused by field interleaving for interlaced scanning video, which affect the quality of intraframe-based codec such as Motion-JPEG2000. To improve the local adaptability for given pictures, its variable-coefficient processing with motion detection has also been proposed so that filters can be changed according to local properties of motion pictures, while maintaining the invertibility. In this paper, it is shown that the variable-coefficient invertible deinterlacing can be realized by a lifting-based simple hardware architecture, and motion detector can also be embedded. Both of the motion detection and deinterlacing filters are shared by a special choice of their coefficients, and by adaptive selection of deinterlacing filters. The significance of our proposed architecture is verified by showing synthesis results from the VHDL models. The proposed implementation with embedded motion detector achieves about 28% reduction of the gate count compared with the corresponding separate implementation.

Integration of the IP/MPLS network and the WDM optical mesh network is a promising approach to realizing an efficient backbone network. Because of the great volumes of traffic carried, the social cost incurred by a failure will be extremely high, so survivability is very important in the backbone network. In survivable IP/MPLS over WDM backbone networks, cooperation of the optical level fault recovery and the IP/MPLS level fault recovery is essential. This paper analyzes cost characteristics of the optical level fault recovery and the IP/MPLS level fault recovery. A mathematical programming method is proposed to minimize the initial network cost when the IP/MPLS level fault recovery is utilized in the survivable IP/MPLS over WDM networks. Using this method, the initial network cost needed for the IP/MPLS level fault recovery is compared with that for the optical level fault recovery. The initial network cost for the LSP (Label Switched Path) protection scheme is smaller than that for the shared light-path protection scheme and larger than that for the pre-plan type light-path restoration scheme. The LSP protection scheme is suitable for the best-effort type traffic while the shared light-path protection scheme may be suitable for the bandwidth guaranteed type traffic.

A fuzzy-like phenomenon in a dynamic neural network is demonstrated and analyzed. The network operates as a dynamic associative memory. Each neuron of the dynamic neural network has an all-or-none output and exponentially decaying refractoriness. When several related patterns are stored in the dynamic neural network and an external stimulus with a property shared by two of the stored patterns is applied to the neural network, the output of the neural network dynamically transits between the two stored patterns. The frequency ratio that the network visits the two stored patterns is dependent on the ratio of the Hamming distances between the external pattern and the two stored patterns. This phenomenon is similar to the human decision-making process, some of which characteristics can be described by fuzzy set theory. A framework for the analysis of this phenomenon is proposed, and is used to derive sufficient conditions which ensure the dynamical transition between the two stored patterns. The properties of the transition in the network are also discussed.

Passification of a non-square linear system is considered by using a parallel feedforward compensator (PFC) and a squaring gain matrix. In contrast to the previous result, a technical assumption is removed by modifying the structure of the PFC. As a result, the broader class of non-square systems can be made passive by the proposed design method. Using the static output feedback (SOF) algorithms, the input-dimensional PFC and the squaring matrix can be designed systematically. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by practical system examples in the control literature.

A nonlinear combiner random number generator is a general keystream generator for certain stream ciphers. The generator is composed of several linear feedback shift registers and a nonlinear function; the output is used as a keystream. A fast correlation attack is a typical attack for such keystream generators. Mihaljevi, Fossorier, and Imai have proposed an improved fast correlation attack. The attack is based on error correction of information bits only in the corresponding binary linear block code; APP threshold decoding is employed for the error correction procedure. In this letter, we propose a method which improves the success rate of their attacks with similar complexity. The method adds some intentional error to original parity check equations. Those equations are then used in APP threshold decoding.

Multiple access interference and near-far effect cause the performance of the conventional single user detector in DS/CDMA systems to degrade. Due to high complexity of the optimum multiuser detector, suboptimal multiuser detectors with less complexity and reasonable performance have received considerable attention. In this paper we apply the classic and a new modified genetic algorithm for multiuser detection of DS/CDMA signals. It is shown that the classic genetic algorithm (GA) reaches an error floor at high signal to noise ratios (SNR) while the performance of proposed modified GA is much better than the classic one and is comparable to the optimum detector with much less complexity. The results hold true for AWGN and fading channels. We also describe another GA called as meta GA to find the optimum parameters of the modified GA. We compare the performance of proposed method with the other detectors used in CDMA.

Carrier frequency and symbol timing errors may greatly degrade the performance of the orthogonal frequency division mulitplexing (OFDM) system, especially in multipath environment. In this paper, we explore the cyclostationarity of OFDM signals, which only relies on second order statistics, to estimate the synchronization offset. First, a coarse carrier frequency offset estimator for multipath environment is developed using the second order statistics of the received OFDM signal. It has a wide capture range though not accurate. Second, we introduce a new synchronization algorithm based on cyclostationarity and matched filter theories, which can get the maximal estimation SNR in multipath environment. Both estimators utilize channel state information to achieve better estimation performance and are non-pilot aided. They can be combined to form a whole OFDM synchronizer for multipath environment. Finally, simulations confirm the performance of the estimation algorithm.

This paper proposes a traffic-driven optical IP networking architecture for service provider networks. Its design is derived from the optical GMPLS architecture, which provides high performance but is not scalable since both optical paths and IP routes need to be arranged in a mesh topology. To improve scalability, we first modified the configuration so that paths and routes can be arranged in a tree topology. However, this approach may degrade performance due to traffic concentration at each tree's root. To prevent such performance degradation, we further modified the architecture so that both cut-through optical paths and cut-through IP routes can be assigned reactively, according to traffic demand, and these can work together in cooperation. As a result, our architecture achieves both high performance and scalability, in that the whole network performance can be maintained without a massive increase in the number of optical paths and IP routes, even if the number of customer networks grows.

The current paper presents an effective deblocking algorithm for block-based coded images using singularity detection in a wavelet transform. Blocking artifacts appear periodically at block boundaries in block-based coded images. The local maxima of a wavelet transform modulus detect all singularities, including blocking artifacts, from multiscale edges. Accordingly, the current study discriminates between a blocking artifact and an edge by estimating the Lipschitz regularity of the local maxima and removing the wavelet transform modulus of a blocking artifact that has a negative Lipschitz regularity exponent. Experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed algorithm was objectively and subjectively superior.

This paper presents an algorithm for fingerprint image restoration using Digital Reaction-Diffusion System (DRDS). The DRDS is a model of a discrete-time discrete-space nonlinear reaction-diffusion dynamical system, which is useful for generating biological textures, patterns and structures. This paper focuses on the design of a fingerprint restoration algorithm that combines (i) a ridge orientation estimation technique using an iterative coarse-to-fine processing strategy and (ii) an adaptive DRDS having a capability of enhancing low-quality fingerprint images using the estimated ridge orientation. The phase-only image matching technique is employed for evaluating the similarity between an original fingerprint image and a restored image. The proposed algorithm may be useful for person identification applications using fingerprint images.

    1985-1992

This paper presents a new modulation scheme for Very-High Speed Digital Subscriber Lines (VDSL) modem, featuring a Multi-Code Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC2-CDMA) modulation. The system takes advantage from both the CDMA modulation and the Multi-Carrier transmission, and furthermore the channel throughput is increased adopting a multi-code approach. Starting from an overview of this novel scheme, encompassing the transmitter, channel and receiver description, a brief review of the equalization techniques is also considered and a proper bit-loading algorithm is derived to find out the achievable overall channel rate. The aim of this paper, besides introducing this novel scheme, is to demonstrate its suitability for a VDSL environment, where the achievable channel rate represents a real challenge. By means of a further optimisation, a general improvement of the system performance with respect to the standardized Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation is also demonstrated.

  • Stable Learning Algorithm for Blind Separation of Temporally Correlated Acoustic Signals Combining Multistage ICA and Linear Prediction

    2028-2036

We newly propose a stable algorithm for blind source separation (BSS) combining multistage ICA (MSICA) and linear prediction. The MSICA is the method previously proposed by the authors, in which frequency-domain ICA (FDICA) for a rough separation is followed by time-domain ICA (TDICA) to remove residual crosstalk. For temporally correlated signals, we must use TDICA with a nonholonomic constraint to avoid the decorrelation effect from the holonomic constraint. However, the stability cannot be guaranteed in the nonholonomic case. To solve the problem, the linear predictors estimated from the roughly separated signals by FDICA are inserted before the holonomic TDICA as a prewhitening processing, and the dewhitening is performed after TDICA. The stability of the proposed algorithm can be guaranteed by the holonomic constraint, and the pre/dewhitening processing prevents the decorrelation. The experiments in a reverberant room reveal that the algorithm results in higher stability and separation performance.

The high-resolution frequency estimators most commonly used, such as Least Square (LS) method based on AR model, MVSE, MUSIC and ESPRIT, determine estimates of the sinusoidal frequencies from the sample noise-corrupted data. In this paper, a new frequency estimation method named Pole-Placement Least Square (PPLS) is presented, which is a modified LS method with a certain number of model poles restricted to the unit circle. The statistical performance of PPLS is studied numerically, and compared with the Cramer-Rao bound as well as the statistical performance corresponding to the LS methods. PPLS is shown to have higher resolution than the conventional LS method. The relationship between poles location and its resolution is also discussed in detail.

This paper considers a transaction-based multi-server system with rejuvenation, and derive the optimal software rejuvenation policies under some system dependability measures; the steady-state availability, the probability of transaction loss and the upper bound of mean response time on transactions. We compare the system configuration based on a single-server with that based on a multi-server in terms of the software rejuvenation scheme. In numerical examples, we calculate the optimal software rejuvenation timing and its associated dependability measure, and refer to the effect of preventive maintenance in the transaction-based multi-server software systems.
