This paper examines the Inter Carrier Interference (ICI) due to Doppler spread in OFDM mobile reception and proposes the use of Beam-Space Adaptive Array Antennas for moving receivers. In the proposed system, firstly we separate the multi-path signals into multi-beams according to their incident directions, then correct the frequency shift of each beam signal, considering the beam direction, and finally combine the corrected signals based on Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC). Further this paper clarifies the excellent performance of the proposed system in suppressing the influence of Doppler spread by carrying out computer simulation. Particularly, it was certified that it is possible to suppress the influence of the Doppler spread efficiently for all the receiving directions by using eight-element beam-space array antenna with element spacing of (3/8)λ, and referring three past symbol data when calculating the weight vector of MRC.

Space-Time Turbo code is an effective method for the enhancement of link capacity and maximizing the link-budget by balancing the coding gain obtained via Turbo codes and the diversity gain obtained through multiple antenna transmission. A study on an antenna selection scheme for Space-Time Turbo code for OFDM systems is presented in this paper. In the proposed method, the systematic bits and the punctured parity bits are sent from the selected antenna for each sub-carrier, while data transmission is suspended from the antenna experiencing poor channel conditions at the receiver. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields a 2.2 dB gain in the required TxEb/N0 relative to the conventional method, and makes the channel estimation accuracy more robust. Moreover, the proposed method reduces transmission power by about 4 dB compared to the conventional method.

In radio surveillance systems we consider the problem of identifying interferers or illegal radios in licensed communication channels. The systems considered are receivers using arrays of antennas for spatial processing. At the output of each antenna, we have a mixture of communication signals. The mixture will depend on the distance of the source radios and the propagation environment. These signals may or may not have the same modulation type. The main four tasks in the radio surveillance system are: Separation of the source signals contained in the data mixture at the array antenna, modulation recognition to identify the illegal radio, direction of arrival estimation to pinpoint the location of the illegal radios, and demodulation to intercept the information contained within the illegal transmission. In this paper we deal with the application of the Fast ICA algorithm to a uniform linear array. Our interest is to separate the independent source signals from the mixture of signals obtained at the sensors. Since the target system operates in the HF domain, where analog modulations dominate, the impinging signals are assumed analog modulated communication signals.

Hyperthermia is one of the modalities for cancer treatment, utilizing the difference of thermal sensitivity between tumor and normal tissue. In this treatment, the tumor or target cancer cell is heated up to the therapeutic temperature between 42 and 45 without overheating the surrounding normal tissues. Particularly, the authors have been studying the coaxial-slot antenna for interstitial microwave hyperthermia. At that time, we analyzed the heating characteristics of the coaxial-slot antenna under the assumption that the human body is a homogeneous medium. In this paper, we analyzed the heating characteristics of the coaxial-slot antenna inside an actual neck tumor by using numerical calculations. The models of calculations consist of MRI tomograms of an actual patient. As a result of the calculations, we observed almost uniform temperature distributions inside the human body including the actual neck tumor, which are similar to the results obtained for a homogeneous medium.

This paper presents the approximate error rates of M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) for optimum combining (OC) with multiple interferers in a flat Rayleigh fading channel. The approximations, which have been used to evaluate the performance of binary PSK for OC, are extended to the performance analysis of MPSK for OC in the presence of arbitrary numbers of antennas and interferers. The mean eigenvalues of interference-plus-noise covariance matrix are analyzed to compare the approximation techniques, i.e., first-order approximation and the orthongal approximation. Using the moment generating function (MGF)-based method, the approximate error rates of MPSK for OC are derived as the closed-form expressions in terms of the exact error rates of MPSK for MRC. The approximate analytical results show the simple and accurate way to assess the average symbol error rate of MPSK for OC with arbitrary numbers of antennas and interferers.

Many carriers are introducing multi-media services to satisfy customer demands for these services. In order to provide such services, carrier must increase their system capacity. It is well known that space division multiple access (SDMA) improves system capacity and is compatible with existing access systems. In order to evaluate the performance of SDMA, we developed an SDMA test bed. The test bed maintains the personal handy phone systems (PHS). The PHS adopts time division multiple access (TDMA). Aiming to compare the performance of SDMA and TDMA using the same analog hardware, the SDMA test bed employs a software-defined radio (SDR) technique. This paper shows the outline and performance of the test bed. The results of laboratory tests indicate that the bit error rate (BER) of the test bed operated in the SDMA mode at under 10-3 when the carrier-tointerference ratio (CIR) was larger than approximately -22 dB. Antenna patterns measured in an anechoic chamber show that the SDMA test bed produces correct antenna patterns when there are three desired signals and one interference signal. The results of the four field tests confirm that the test bed operated while two-multiplex SDMA mode doubled of the traffic and decreased the interference level as compared with the TDMA mode. Furthermore, the test bed operated while threemultiplex SDMA mode improves the traffic about 2.4 to 2.7 times. The SDMA test bed decreased the impact of the adjusted TDMA base station (BS). Therefore, we confirmed that the SDMA improves system capacity without any degradation.

In this paper, as an important technology for the software-defined radio, a novel scheme of adaptive array antenna utilizing bandpass sampling technique is proposed. For adaptive signal processing, it is necessary to convert the radio frequency signal received by the antenna that is given by real number into baseband region, i.e., complex number region. Then, the method for dividing the bandpass sampled signal to in-phase and quadrature components is analyzed. The sampling scheme is called the IQ-division bandpass sampling. An adaptive array antenna based on the IQ-division bandpass sampling is characterized by the signal processing at the bandpass sampled signal stage, namely, intermediate frequency stage, not baseband. Finally, we will confirm the validity of the proposed scheme through an experiment in a radio anechoic chamber.

The performance enhancement technology for indoor-to-outdoor wireless communication systems is discussed in this study. In outdoor communication systems, transmitted signals may be severely degraded mainly by multipath fading effect of the channel and this problem can be overcome using conventional multiple antenna technology and array signal processing algorithms. But, since channel characteristics depend on both multipath fading and angle spread in indoor-to-outdoor communication systems, conventional algorithms which do not consider the effect caused by angle spread cannot give good results. In this letter, characteristics of indoor-to-outdoor channels are analyzed and a channel model suitable for this situation is proposed. And a new array antenna processing algorithm exploiting the concept of the mean steering vector is presented and the system performance is analyzed. It can be shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional methods through computer simulations for the case in which signals sent from indoor transmitters arrive at outdoor receivers.

As the capacity of a personal computer and workstation increases rapidly, many electromagnetic simulators solving antenna problems are widely used. In this paper, the IE3D, FIDELITY and HFSS electromagnetic simulators, which are commercial software products, are applied to the analysis of built-in antennas for handsets in the vicinity of the human body. The IE3D, FIDELITY and HFSS electromagnetic simulators are based on the methods of moment, FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) and FEM (Finite Element Method), respectively. Firstly, basic characteristics including the human body's effect of a popular built-in antenna for handset such as PIFA (Planar Inverted-F Antenna) are obtained by the IE3D, FIDELITY and HFSS electromagnetic simulators, and calculated results are compared with measured results. Secondly, on the basis of newly considered design concepts for a handset antenna, a folded loop antenna for handset, which we have proposed in order to reduce the influence of the human body, is taken as an example of a balance-fed antenna and is analyzed theoretically and experimentally including the influence of the human body. In a result, calculated results by these three kinds of electromagnetic simulators are in good agreement with measured results and it is confirmed that these simulators are very effective in analyzing the handset antenna in the vicinity of the human body.

For the reception of MC-CDMA signals in a frequency-selective fading channel, frequency-domain equalization is necessary before despreading. In this paper, joint antenna diversity combining and one-tap frequency-domain equalization is considered (simply referred to as the joint antenna diversity & equalization, in this paper). A receiver structure for joint antenna diversity & equalization is presented and the unified weights based on minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion are found in the presence of multi-users with different spreading factors and transmit powers. For comparison, antenna diversity combining after despreading using MMSE combining (MMSEC) is also considered. The achievable bit error rate (BER) performances with joint antenna diversity & equalization and with antenna diversity after MMSEC despreading in a frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel are evaluated by computer simulations and compared.

Beam-space time coding methods are being extensively investigated, since they provide levels of performance appropriate for the next and future generations of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we focus on beam-domain space-time coding, especially considering the case when transmit beams have inter-beam interference (IBI). A new beam-space time coding scheme that takes into account the overlap amount among beams is proposed. We observe that the overlap of beams introduces an amount of correlation to the channels in a similar way to the well-known Partial Response (PR) channel in magnetic recording. Based on that observation, the proposed system can make use of IBI to encode and decode the signals. We evaluate the proposed system both via theoretical upper bound and via computer simulations. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of the proposed system using IBI is better than that of the system with no-IBI because the proposed system delivers more coding gain. However, the overlap of beams decreases the diversity gain. The tradeoff relationship between diversity gain and coding gain is investigated.

In this paper, we propose the soft boundary concept achieved by dynamic tilted antenna to solve the issue of traffic congestion occurred in cellular wireless systems. The tilted antenna array can provide the merit of traffic balance and also achieve the optimization of the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) at receivers by automatically tilting the antenna and implementing the soft boundary among cells, corresponding to the variation of traffic. According to our results, it is shown that power ratio control do not necessarily improved system performance when there is a large variation in traffic because it only control power levels. Also the properly chosen angle of tilt antenna can relieve the traffic congestion and perform the system performance optimization.

A rectangular-to-radial waveguide transformer through a crossed slot is proposed as a feeder of a radial line slot antenna (RLSA) for use in a system of solar power satellite (SPS). The transformer is analyzed and designed by using the MoM with numerical eigenmode basis functions. The measured ripple of the amplitude is 3.0 dB in the φ-direction and a 7.0% frequency bandwidth for rotating mode with the ripple below 6 dB is obtained. This bandwidth is wider than that of conventional ring slot or cavity resonator with a coaxial feeder. The antenna measurements at 5.8 GHz show reasonable rotational symmetry both in the near-field distribution and the far field radiation patterns. The reflection is -27.7 dB at the design frequency and below -15 dB in the 7.0% bandwidth. The gain of the antenna with the diameter of 300 mm is 22.7 dBi and the efficiency is 56%.

Employing a triangular dielectric phase shifter simplifies the beam forming network of an offset beam array antenna because this structure achieves phase control in a single configuration. This paper proposes a design method for a low loss offset beam planar antenna that incorporates a triangular dielectric plate phase shifter on parallel microstrip feedlines. Our design method reduces the loss of the phase shifter by optimizing the microstrip line width. By using the proposed design equation, the optimum low loss phase shifter configuration can be easily established. In addition, this paper presents the actual design of a triangular plate considering size reduction. The results of experiments of the offset beam antenna indicate that our design method is effective in obtaining a simple, low loss, and compact configuration.

ESPAR (Electronically Steerable Passive Array Radiator) antennas were proposed as candidates for low-cost analog adaptive beamforming. The radiation pattern is controlled in an azimuthal plane by variable reactors loaded on each passive element. This paper estimates the frequency bandwidth of an ESPAR antenna in a single beam scanning operation. Bandwidth in terms of gain is predicted statistically as functions of beam direction and dynamic range of variable reactance. The -3 dB bandwidth of 7-element ESPAR antennas can be about 30%, 25% and 15% for the range of reactance of -100Ω Xn 100Ω, -50Ω Xn 50Ω and -100Ω Xn 0Ω, respectively, while the improper choice of reactance sets results in narrow bandwidth less than 5%.

A new beamforming technique based on the power method is proposed in this paper. We show that the new technique is quite robust to the angular spread in the received signals making it particularly useful for smart antennas in WCDMA systems. The proposed technique utilizes two primary eigenvectors of the autocovariance matrix of the received data to form the weight vector of a smart antenna. An efficient adaptive procedure combining the power method and deflation method is given to compute the first and second largest eigenvalues with a reasonable complexity and accuracy. To demonstrate the proposed technique, it has been applied to WCDMA signal environment showing its robust and improved performance.

Frequency-domain representation of the well-known time-domain rake combining for the antenna diversity reception of DS-CDMA signals is derived. Two receiver structures using frequency-domain rake combining are presented. Frequency-domain rake combining can alleviate the complexity problem of the time-domain rake arising from too many paths in a severe frequency selective fading channel at the cost of guard interval insertion. The results shown in this paper show a possibility that a DS-CDMA approach still remain to be promising for broadband wireless access technique.

A microstrip array antenna with 45-degree inclined linear polarization is proposed for automotive radars. The proposed antenna has the advantages of high aperture efficiency, low profile and ease of manufacture. The rectangular radiating elements inclined at 45 degrees to the straight microstrip line are directly connected to it at their corners in the proposed array antenna. The radiating element has a feature that radiation conductance for co-polarization is controlled widely enough to set desired amplitude distribution keeping excited mode for cross-polarization negligibly small. The feed line loss of the linear array antenna having 15 wavelengths is estimated 0.9 dB in the design taking the loss of the microstrip line into account. The performance of two types of developed antennas, for electrical and mechanical scanning radars, is presented. The fan beam subarray antenna for electrical scanning radars has an aperture efficiency of 53% with gain of 22.5 dBi at 76.5 GHz. For mechanical scanning radars, the two-stage series feeding circuit is also proposed for lower feed line loss and setting desired amplitude distribution. The pencil beam array antenna has an aperture efficiency of 39% with gain of 32.2 dBi at 76.5 GHz.
