    This paper presents flexible inner-outer Krylov subspace methods, which are implemented using the fast multipole method (FMM) for solving scattering problems with mixed dielectric and conducting object. The flexible Krylov subspace methods refer to a class of methods that accept variable preconditioning. To obtain the maximum efficiency of the inner-outer methods, it is desirable to compute the inner iterations with the least possible effort. Hence, generally, inaccurate matrix-vector multiplication (MVM) is performed in the inner solver within a short computation time. This is realized by using a particular feature of the multipole techniques. The accuracy and computational cost of the FMM can be controlled by appropriately selecting the truncation number, which indicates the number of multipoles used to express far-field interactions. On the basis of the abovementioned fact, we construct a less-accurate but much cheaper version of the FMM by intentionally setting the truncation number to a sufficiently low value, and then use it for the computation of inaccurate MVM in the inner solver. However, there exists no definite rule for determining the suitable level of accuracy for the FMM within the inner solver. The main focus of this study is to clarify the relationship between the overall efficiency of the flexible inner-outer Krylov solver and the accuracy of the FMM within the inner solver. Numerical experiments reveal that there exits an optimal accuracy level for the FMM within the inner solver, and that a moderately accurate FMM operator serves as the optimal preconditioner.

  • Extended Selective Encoding of Scan Slices for Reducing Test Data and Test Power

    Test data volume and test power are two major concerns when testing modern large circuits. Recently, selective encoding of scan slices is proposed to compress test data. This encoding technique, unlike many other compression techniques encoding all the bits, only encodes the target-symbol by specifying a single bit index and copying group data. In this paper, we propose an extended selective encoding which presents two new techniques to optimize this method: a flexible grouping strategy, X bits exploitation and filling strategy. Flexible grouping strategy can decrease the number of groups which need to be encoded and improve test data compression ratio. X bits exploitation and filling strategy can exploit a large number of don't care bits to reduce testing power with no compression ratio loss. Experimental results show that the proposed technique needs less test data storage volume and reduces average weighted switching activity by 25.6% and peak weighted switching activity by 9.68% during scan shift compared to selective encoding.

    Electrical characteristics of P3HT/Aluminum organic/ inorganic heterojunction diodes were investigated V-I and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. The V-I measurement exhibited current rectification inherent in the Schottky diode, suggesting their availabilities as rectification diodes in organic flexible circuits. C-V analysis indicated the fact that the depletion layer was generated in the P3HT film in the reversed bias condition. The flat band voltage analysis suggested that the interfacial charge affected the built-in potential of the diodes. Al/P3HT heterojunction is possible to be used as not only the rectification diodes but also gate junctions for junction type field effect or static induction transistors.

    This primary objective of this study is to demonstrate simulation and ground-based experiment for the attitude control of flexible spacecraft. A typical spacecraft structure consists of the rigid body and flexible appendages which are large flexible solar panels, parabolic antennas built from light materials in order to reduce their weight. Therefore the attitude control has a big problem because these appendages induce structural vibration under the excitation of external forces. A single-axis rotational simulator with a flexible arm is constructed with on-off air thrusters and reaction wheel as actuation. The simulator is also equipped with payload pointing capability by simultaneous thruster and DC servo motor actuation. The experiment of flexible spacecraft attitude control is performed using only the reaction wheel. Using the reaction wheel the performance of the fuzzy-PID controller is illustrated by simulation and experimental results for a single-axis rotational simulator.

    Electrical characteristics of the mechanically flexible driver LSI as thin as 35 µm mounted directly on a flexible display panel were precisely analyzed. The high-voltage transistors on this LSI show the current decrease by 10-30% in high voltage region, comparing with that of an ordinary thickness LSI. These phenomena can be associated with a self-heating effect. We considered the thermal diffusion on the thin chip by changing material of the measurement stage. Moreover, we analyzed the transistor characteristics on the thin chip under convex and concave bending conditions. The drain current change by piezoresistive effect was observed.

    We developed new principle of electronic paper that is one side (for 2D image) or double side (for stereoscopic 3D image) light printable rewritable matter with polarization dependent gray scale. It consists of one or two liquid crystal displays based on Optical Rewritable (ORW) technology, which is the development of rotation azo-dye photoalignment. Each ORW display uses bare plastic or polarizers as substrates. The conductor is not required, as the image is formed by rewritable states of azimuthal direction, which results in 2D pattern of the liquid crystal twist angle. Continuous grey image maintains proper performance even when the device is bent. Simple construction provides durability and low cost, thin substrates minimize parallax for 3D image. Fluorescent dye dopant of liquid crystal partly absorbs light in blue and re-emit in green specter range improving photopic reflection and enhancing color of the ORW e-paper.

    The H.264/AVC standard provides several new error-resilient features to enable the reliable transmission of compressed video signals over lossy packet networks. Flexible Macroblock Ordering (FMO) is one of the most interesting resilient features within the H.264/AVC standard. Unlike former standards, in which slices were constructed out of consecutive raster scan macroblocks, FMO suggests new slices composed of spatially distributed Macroblocks (MBs), and organized in a mixed-up fashion. H.264/AVC specifies seven types of FMO. The standard defines also an explicit FMO type (Type 6), which allows explicitly assignment of each MB within the frame to any available slice groups. Therefore new FMO types can be used and integrated into H264/AVC without violating the standard. In this paper we propose a new Explicit Chessboard-Wipe (ECW) Flexible Macroblocks Ordering (FMO) technique, which outperforms all other FMO types. The new ECW ordering results in effective error scattering which maximizes the number of correctly received macroblocks located around corrupted macroblocks, leading to better error concealment. Performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed Explicit FMO approach outperforms all the FMO types. Both subjective and objective visual quality comparative study has been also carried out in order to validate the proposed approach.

  • An Effective QoS Control Scheme for 3D Virtual Environments Based on User's Perception

    In this paper, we present a new three-dimensional (3D) virtual environment (3DVE) system named "QuViE/P", which can enhance quality of service (QoS), that users actually feel, as good as possible when resources of computers and networks are limited. To realize this, we focus on characteristics of user's perceptual quality evaluation on 3D objects. We propose an effective QoS control scheme for QuViE/P by introducing relationships between system's internal quality parameters and user's perceptual quality parameters. This scheme can appropriately maintain the QoS of the 3DVE system and it is expected to improve convenience when using 3DVE system where resources are insufficient. We designed and implemented a prototype of QuViE/P using a multiagent framework. The experiment results show that even when the computer resource is reduced to 20% of the required amount, the proposed scheme can maintain the quality of important objects to a certain level.

  • An Asynchronous Circuit Design Technique for a Flexible 8-Bit Microprocessor

    This paper presents an asynchronous design technique, an enabler for the emerging technology of flexible microelectronics that feature low-temperature processed polysilicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFT) and surface-free technology by laser annealing/ablation (SUFTLA®). The first design instance chosen is an 8-bit microprocessor. LTPS TFTs are good for realizing displays having integrated VLSI circuit at lower costs. However, LTPS TFTs have drawbacks, including substantial deviations in characteristics and the self-heating phenomenon. To solve these problems, the authors adopted the asynchronous circuit design technique and developed an asynchronous design language called Verilog+, which is based on a subset of Verilog HDL® and includes minimal primitives used for describing the communications between modules, and the dedicated tools including a translator called xlator and a synthesizer called ctrlsyn. The flexible 8-bit microprocessor stably operates at 500 kHz, drawing 180 µA from a 5 V power source. The microprocessor's electromagnetic emissions are 21 dB less than those of the synchronous counterpart.

    The objective of this paper is to analyze a pull type multi-product, multi-line and multi-stage flexible manufacturing system whose resources are subject to planned and unplanned breakdown conditions. To ensure a continual supply of the finished products, under breakdown conditions, parts/materials flow through alternate routes exhibiting routing flexibility. The machine resources are flexible in this study and are capable of producing more than one item. Every machining and assembly station has been equipped with automated inspection units to ensure the quality of the products. The system is modelled through coloured Petri net methodology and the impact of input factors have been shown on the performance of the system. The study has been extended to explore near-optimal conditions of the system using design of experiment and response surface methods.

    In recent years, wireless communications systems such as wireless LAN, Bluetooth, etc. are being rapidly adopted. As the antennas used in wireless communications systems are usually installed in small mobile devices, it is demanded that the volume should be small. In our research, we focus our attention on flexible printed circuits (FPCs) to meet the miniaturization demand. In this paper, we introduce a planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) suitable for IEEE802.11b/g and Bluetooth. The antenna is made of FPC. We measured the radiation pattern of the antenna when the antenna is successively curved and folded, and it is clear that its radiation performance does not vary much when the antenna is deformed. We analyzed the antenna by using the moment method.

  • Reconfigurable CMOS Mixer for Multi-Standard Applications

    A reconfigurable CMOS mixer for multi-standard application is presented. The mixer can be tuned and adjusted to multi-frequency bands using a flexible matching network which is a kind of variable reactance transformer. The flexible matching network consists of a few switched inductors and capacitors. The mixer has acceptable conversion gain, IIP3 and NF. It operates with a return loss of less than -10 dB through 2-6 GHz except for a few narrow frequency bands.

  • Knowledge Circulation Framework for Flexible Multimedia Communication Services

    We present a design of knowledge circulation framework for quality of service (QoS) control of multimedia communication service (MCS). This framework aims to realizing user oriented and resource aware MCS by enabling effective placement of QoS control knowledge on the network. In this paper, we propose a conceptual design of the framework with knowledge-based multiagent system. In this framework, QoS control knowledge is actively circulated by getting on the agents. We implement a prototype of real-time bidirectional MCS (videoconference system) using this framework, and show initial experiment results using it to evaluate the effectiveness of the framework.

    Conventional WDM systems multiplex channels with different signal bandwidths using fixed and equal channel spacing. As a result, their spectral efficiency is rather poor. If the wavelength and the bandwidth of each channel in a WDM system could be freely changed as needed, a variety of services with different signal bandwidths could be accommodated efficiently. This is expected to yield high spectral efficiency. For this purpose, this paper proposes a WDM optically amplified system that combines optical power splitting with homodyne detection; its use in three configurations, point to point, ring (center to remote nodes), and peer to peer, is described. Coherent optical systems generally need a frequency stable local light source in addition to a sending light source in each WDM channel. We improve cost effectiveness by proposing that the output of one light source be divided to yield the local light for frequency selection by homodyne detection and the sending light source whose output is externally modulated by transmission signal. In this configuration, the local light level is low to permit high levels of sending power. The key problem is how to get high SNR with limited low-level local lights. This paper derives the optimum receiving loss condition that can maximize the SNR with local light levels as low as -20 dBm for the point to point configuration. For the ring configuration, the system overcomes the optical power loss created by splitting numbers over 1,000 even if the local lights are as low as 0 dBm. The ring configuration can, therefore, flexibly accommodate many users and services. We also elucidate the relation between SNR and BER for DPSK homodyne detection in a bandwidth-flexible system.

  • A Flexible-Revocation Scheme for Efficient Public-Key Black-Box Traitor Tracing

    We propose a new type of revocation scheme for efficient public-key black-box traitor tracing. Our revocation scheme is flexible and efficient in the sense that (i) any number of subscribers can be revoked in each distribution under an assumption that the number of revoked subscribers who collude in one coalition is limited to a threshold and (ii) both each subscriber's storage and the transmission overhead are independent of n, while (i) the maximum number of revoked ones cannot be changed or (ii) they depend on n in previous schemes, where n is the total number of subscribers. The flexibility in revocation is significant since flexible revocation can be integrated with efficient black-box tracing and this integration can be achieved without a substantial increase in the transmission overhead over the previous schemes. In this paper, we present a concrete construction of an efficient public-key black-box traceable and revocable scheme by combining flexible revocation with a known black-box tracing algorithm which works under the same attack model as assumed in the previous schemes. Our scheme achieves that (i) the transmission overhead remains efficient, especially linear only in k in case of bulk revocation and (ii) the tracing algorithm runs in O(log n) time, while the previous ones cannot satisfy both of these properties, where k is the maximum number of traitors in a coalition.

  • Flexible Resource Allocation with Partial Resource Sharing and Minimum Overflow for Integrated Services

    Flexible Resource Allocation (FRA) strategies selectively control the transmission rates of users allowing them to specify maximum and minimum bandwidth requirements for the service type requested ensuring a minimum quality of service (QoS) is met. Complete, Partial, and Non Resource Sharing are the three types of resource sharing policies that can be used in systems with integrated services (voice, video and data) with different QoS and elasticities requirements. In this paper, an FRA strategy with Partial Resource Sharing, called Primary Unavailable Secondary Minimum (PUSMin), is presented. An analytical method is developed to assess its performance in an environment where several service types (with different bandwidth and elasticities requirements) exist. Results show that PUSMin decreases the resource reassignment rate as the offered traffic increases. This decreases the signalling overhead and computational complexity in the Base Station Controller (BSC) or Base Transceiver Station (BTS).

    A flexible symbol-timing synchronization met-hod is a one that uses a common sampling clock to find synchronization points for radio communication systems that have different symbol rates. This method estimates synchronization points from state patterns calculated using the symbol rate, sampling clock, and number of observed symbols. Decreasing the number of state patterns is one of best ways to reduce the amount of device resources needed to store the patterns. In this paper, we propose a new pattern generation method in which the number of generated patterns does not increase when the sampling clocks of the communications systems are different. To show the feasibility of this method for symbol-timing synchronization, we analyzed a relationship between the number of samples and the number of state patterns and calculated the BER (bit error rate) in AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) and one-path flat Rayleigh fading environments by computer simulation.

    We present a design and implementation of a QoS control mechanism in an Adaptive Multimedia Communication System (AMCS) using multiagent-based computing technology. In this paper, we first define functional requirements for AMCS. Subsequently we describe the design and implementation of AMCS with a knowledge-based multiagent framework to fulfill the functional requirements. Moreover we evaluate the adaptability of the prototype systems of AMCS with the operational situations observed in its experiments. From the result of the experiments, we conclude that the multiagent-based design and implementation is reasonable for construction of AMCS.

  • Microwave Variable Delay Line Using a Membrane Impregnated with Liquid Crystal

    A microwave variable delay line using a membrane impregnated with liquid crystal was newly fabricated. By employing the membrane impregnated with liquid crystal to the liquid crystal layer of the delay line, the phase-shift response becomes fast independently of the liquid crystal thickness. Experimental results show that the phase-shift response time of 33 ms, which is two orders of magnitude faster than that of a conventional one, is obtained. The new delay line also exhibits a 270-degree phase-shift and non-dispersive delay characteristics over a wide microwave-frequency range, although a higher control voltage is needed. It is also clarified that the phase-shift characteristics to the control voltage depend on the pore size of the membrane. This membrane impregnated with liquid crystal also enables us to make the variable delay line thin and flexible.
