When BJTs are irradiated by gamma rays, interface trapped charges and positive oxide trapped charges are formed by ionization at the Si-SiO2 interface and SiO2 regions, respectively. These trapped charges affect the movement of carriers depending on the type of BJT. This paper presents experimental results regarding operating characteristics of gamma irradiated pnp Si BJTs.

When collecting images, owing to the influence of shooting equipment, shooting environment, and other factors, often low-illumination images with insufficient exposure are obtained. For low-illumination images, it is necessary to improve the contrast. In this paper, a digital color image contrast enhancement method based on luminance weight adjustment is proposed. This method improves the contrast of the image and maintains the detail and nature of the image. In the proposed method, the illumination of the histogram equalization image and the adaptive gamma correction with weighted distribution image are adjusted by the luminance weight of w1 to obtain a detailed image of the bright areas. Thereafter, the suppressed multi-scale retinex (MSR) is used to process the input image and obtain a detailed image of the dark areas. Finally, the luminance weight w2 is used to adjust the illumination component of the detailed images of the bright and dark areas, respectively, to obtain the output image. The experimental results show that the proposed method can enhance the details of the input image and avoid excessive enhancement of contrast, which maintains the naturalness of the input image well. Furthermore, we used the discrete entropy and lightness order error function to perform a numerical evaluation to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

C-C successive approximation register analog-to-digital converter (C-C SAR-ADC) is space-saving architecture compared to SAR-ADC with binary weighted capacitive digital-to-analog converter (CDAC). However, the accuracy of C-C SAR-ADC is degraded due to parasitic capacitance of floating nodes. This paper proposes an algorithm calibrating the non-linearity by γ-estimation to accurately estimate radix greater than 2 required to realize C-C SAR-ADC. Behavioral analyses show that the radix γ-estimation error become within 1.5, 0.4 and 0.1% in case of 8-, 10- and 12-bit resolution ADC, respectively. SPICE simulations show that the γ-estimation satisfies the requirement of 10-bit resolution C-C SAR-ADC. The C-C SAR-ADC using γ-estimation achieves 9.72bit of ENOB, 0.8/-0.5LSB and 0.5/-0.4LSB of DNL/INL.

For high transmission efficiency, good modulation schemes are expected. This paper focuses on the enhancement of the modulation scheme of free space optical turbo coded system. A free space optical turbo coded system using a new signaling scheme called hybrid PPM-OOK signaling (HPOS) is proposed and investigated. The theoretical formula of the bit error rate of the uncoded HPOS system is derived. The effective information rate performances (i.e. channel capacity) of the proposed HPOS turbo coded system are evaluated through computer simulation in free space optical channel, with weak, moderate, strong scintillation. The performance of the proposed HPOS turbo coded system is compared with those of the conventional OOK (On-Off Keying) turbo coded system and BPPM (Binary Pulse Position Modulation) turbo coded system. As results, the proposed HPOS turbo coded system shows the same tolerance capability to background noise and atmospheric turbulence as the conventional BPPM turbo coded system, and it has 1.5 times larger capacity.

Both spatial diversity and multihop relaying are considered to be effective methods for mitigating the impact of atmospheric turbulence-induced fading on the performance of free-space optical (FSO) systems. Multihop relaying can significantly reduce the impact of fading by relaying the information over a number of shorter hops. However, it is not feasible or economical to deploy relays in many practical scenarios. Spatial diversity could substantially reduce the fading variance by introducing additional degrees of freedom in the spatial domain. Nevertheless, its superiority is diminished when the fading sub-channels are correlated. In this paper, our aim is to study the fundamental performance limits of spatial diversity suffering from correlated Gamma-Gamma (G-G) fading channels in multihop coherent FSO systems. For the performance analysis, we propose to approximate the sum of correlated G-G random variables (RVs) as a G-G RV, which is then verified by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) goodness-of-fit statistical test. Performance metrics, including the outage probability and the ergodic capacity, are newly derived in closed-form expressions and thoroughly investigated. Monte-Carlo (M-C) simulations are also performed to validate the analytical results.
The problem of reproducing high dynamic range (HDR) images on devices with a restricted dynamic range has gained a lot of interest in the computer graphics community. Various approaches to this issue exist, spanning several research areas, including computer graphics, image processing, color vision, and physiology. However, most of the approaches to the issue have several serious well-known color distortion problems. Accordingly, this article presents a tone-mapping method. The proposed method comprises the tone-mapping operator and the chromatic adaptation transform. The tone-mapping method is combined with linear and non-linear mapping using visual gamma based on contrast sensitive function (CSF) and using key of scene value, where the visual gamma is adopted to automatically control the dynamic range, parameter free, as well as to avoid both the luminance shift and the hue shift in the displayed images. Furthermore, the key of scene value is used to represent whether the scene was subjectively light, norm, dark. The resulting image is then processed through a chromatic adaptation transform and emphasis lies in human visual perception (HVP). The experiment results show that the proposed method yields better performance of the color rendering over the conventional method in subjective and quantitative quality and color reproduction.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication, which offers better data rate at a lower cost compared to radio-frequency (RF) backhauls, and is much easier to setup and maintain than optical cables, is gaining attention as an attractive substitute. Average capacity is one of the main performances metrics to understand the connectivity and data rates of a communication system but the performance analysis for mixed RF/FSO link is not straightforward as the RF link and the FSO link experiences different atmospheric perturbations. In this paper, we have investigated the ergodic capacity of a dual-hop mixed RF/FSO communication system realized with an average power scaling (APS) based amplify and forward (AF) relay. Assuming moderate to strong atmospheric turbulence, the FSO link is modeled by gamma-gamma distribution while it is assumed that the RF link experiences multipath Rayleigh fading. Simple analytical methods have been devised for obtaining concise closed-form expressions for ergodic capacity under four different rate/ power adaptation policies and are validated through extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

Superconducting Transition edge sensor (TES) coupled with a heavy metal absorber is a promising microcalorimeter for Gamma-ray (γ-ray) spectroscopy with ultra-high energy resolution and high detection efficiency. It is very useful for the non-destructed inspection of the nuclide materials. High resolving power of γ-ray peaks can precisely identify multiple nuclides such as Plutonium (Pu) and Actinides with high efficiency and safety. For this purpose, we have developed the TES coupled with a tin absorber. We suggest the new device structure using the gold bump post which connects a tin absorber to the thermometer of the superconducting Ir/Au bilayer. High thermal conductivity of the gold bump post realized strong thermal coupling between the thermometer and the γ-ray absorber, and it brought the benefit of large pulse height and fast decay time. Our TES achieved the good energy resolution of 84 eV FWHM at 59.5 keV. Using this TES device, we also succeeded to demonstrate the nuclear material measurements. In the measurement of a Pu sample, we detected the sharp γ-ray peaks from 239Pu and 240Pu, and of a Fission Products (FP) sample, we observed fluorescence X-ray peaks emitted by the elements contained in FP. The TES could resolve the fine structures of each fluorescence X-ray line like Kα1 and Kα2. In addition to that, we developed the TES coupled with tantalum absorber, which is expected to have higher absorption efficiency for γ-rays. This device reported the best energy resolution of 465 eV at 662 keV.

Three-dimensionally assembled TES X-ray microcalorimeter arrays may be utilized for three purposes: (1) to obtain wide X-ray energy coverage of TES microcalorimeters, (2) to distinguish charged particle events from X-ray events, (3) to reconstruct Compton-scattering geometry for hard X-ray Compton cameras. We have designed and fabricated three-dimensionally assembled array of the minimum format i.e. $2 imes 2 imes 2$ array in order to obtain a good energy resolution in a wide energy range of 0.5--20,keV and a high maximum counting rate of 2000,cps for energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) system for a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Although we could not obtain required energy resolution because of a problem in the refrigerator system, we confirmed the operation of the three-dimensional array.
The estimation of the power spectral density (PSD) of noise is crucial for retrieving speech in noisy environments. In this study, we propose a novel method for estimating the non-white noise PSD from noisy speech on the basis of a generalized gamma distribution and the minimum mean square error (MMSE) approach. Because of the highly non-stationary nature of speech, deriving its actual spectral probability density function (PDF) using conventional modeling techniques is difficult. On the other hand, spectral components of noise are more stationary than those of speech and can be represented more accurately by a generalized gamma PDF. The generalized gamma PDF can be adapted to optimally match the actual distribution of the noise spectral amplitudes observed at each frequency bin utilizing two real-time updated parameters, which are calculated in each frame based on the moment matching method. The MMSE noise PSD estimator is derived on the basis of the generalized gamma PDF and Gaussian PDF models for noise and speech spectral amplitudes, respectively. Combined with an improved Weiner filter, the proposed noise PSD estimate method exhibits the best performance compared with the minimum statistics, weighted noise estimation, and MMSE-based noise PSD estimation methods in terms of both subjective and objective measures.

The discharge properties and chemical surface stability of CeO2 containing Sr (CeSrO) as the candidate for high-γ protective layer of noble plasma display panels (PDPs) are characterized. CeSrO films have superior chemical stability, because of the decrease in reactiveness on surface due to their fluorite structure. The discharge voltage is 50 V lower than that of MgO films for a pure discharge gas of Ne/Xe = 85/15 at 60 kPa. However the topmost surface, monolayer, of the CeSrO film relevant to the discharge property is hardly recovered from the damage by CO2 impurity in discharge gas. We can expect that by pumping down to a sufficiently low CO2 partial pressure (lower than 1 10-3 Pa), PDP panels with very high efficiency are realized with CeSrO protective layer.

Conventional features for Automatic Speech Recognition and Sound Event Recognition such as Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) have been shown to perform poorly in noisy conditions. We introduce an auditory feature based on the gammatone filterbank, the Selective Gammatone Envelope Feature (SGEF), for Robust Sound Event Recognition where channel selection and the filterbank envelope is used to reduce the effect of noise for specific noise environments. In the experiments with Hidden Markov Model (HMM) recognizers, we shall show that our feature outperforms MFCCs significantly in four different noisy environments at various signal-to-noise ratios.

To assess the performance of maximum-likelihood (ML) based Nakagami m parameter estimators, current methods rely on Monte Carlo simulation. In order to enable the analytical performance evaluation of ML-based m parameter estimators, we study the statistical properties of a parameter Δ, which is defined as the log-ratio of the arithmetic mean to the geometric mean for Nakagami-m fading power. Closed-form expressions are derived for the probability density function (PDF) of Δ. It is found that for large sample size, the PDF of Δ can be well approximated by a two-parameter Gamma PDF.

In this paper we propose a new tone mapping method for HDR video. Two types of gamma tone mapping are blended to preserve local contrast in the entire range of luminance. Our method achieves high quality tone mapping especially for the HDR video that has a nonlinear response to scene radiance. Additionally, we apply it to an object-aware tone mapping method for camera surveillance. This method achieves high visibility of target objects in the tone mapped HDR video. We examine the validity of our methods through simulation and comparison with conventional work.

In this paper, we discuss the validity of the multi-scale gamma model and characterize the differences in host-level application traffic with this model by using a real traffic trace collected on a 150-Mbps transpacific link. First, we investigate the dependency of the model (parameters α and β, and fitting accuracy ε) on time scale Δ, then find suitable time scales for the model. Second, we inspect the relations among α, β, and ε, in order to characterize the differences in the types of applications. The main findings of the paper are as follows. (1) Different types of applications show different dependencies of α, β, and ε on Δ, and display different suitable Δs for the model. The model is more accurate if the traffic consists of intermittently-sent packets than other. (2) More appropriate models are obtained with specific α and β values (e.g., 0.1 < α < 1, and β < 2 for Δ = 500 ms). Also, application-specific traffic presents specific ranges of α, β, and ε for each Δ, so that these characteristics can be used in application identification methods such as anomaly detection and other machine learning methods.

In multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication systems, eigenvalues of channel correlation matrices play an essential role for the performance analysis, and particularly the investigation about their behavior under time-variant environment ruled by a certain statistics is an important problem. This paper first gives the theoretical expressions for the marginal distributions of all the ordered eigenvalues of MIMO correlation matrices under i.i.d. (independent and identically distributed) Rayleigh fading environment. Then, an approximation method of those marginal distributions is presented: We show that the theory of SIMO space diversity using maximal ratio combining (MRC) is applicable to the approximation of statistical distributions of all eigenvalues in MIMO systems with the same number of diversity branches. The derived approximation has a monomial form suitable for the calculation of various performance measures utilized in MIMO systems. Through computer simulations, the effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated.

The damage to the organic layer of aluminum (III) bis(2-methyl-8-quninolinato)-4-phenylphenolate (BAlq) film was investigated on the basis of the change in photoluminescence (PL) intensity. To suppress the bombardment of the substrate with high-energy particles such as γ-electrons and negative oxygen ions, we used a facing-target sputtering (FTS) system. A marked reduction, however, of the PL intensity of the organic layer was still observed upon the deposition of an indium tin oxide (ITO) film on the organic film. To reduce this reduction, we proposed the insertion of a sector-shaped metal shield near the target electrode, and we showed its effectiveness in reducing the damage. This reduction of the damage is thought to be caused by the elimination of γ-electrons incident to the organic film surface escaping from the target area near the substrate side. We confirmed that high-energy electron bombardment leads to a significant reduction of PL intensity of the organic layer. This indicates that high-energy electrons incident to the organic film surface play a key role in the damage of the organic layer during the sputtering process.

We introduce (1-γ)-cyclic code and cyclic codes over the finite chain ring R. We prove that the Gray image of a linear (1-γ)-cyclic code over R of length n is a distance invariant quasi-cyclic code over Fpk. We also prove that if (n,p)=1, then every code over Fpk which is the Gray image of a cyclic code over R of length n is equivalent to a quasi-cyclic code.

In this paper, the statistical characteristic of the Error Detection Delay (EDD) of Finite Precision Binary Arithmetic Codes (FPBAC) is discussed. It is observed that, apart from the probability of the Forbidden Symbol (FS) inserted into the list of the source symbols, the probability of the source sequence and the operation precision as well as the position of the FS in the coding interval can affect the statistical characteristic of the EDD. Experiments demonstrate that the actual distribution of the EDD of FPBAC is quite different from the geometric distribution of infinite precision arithmetic codes. This phenomenon is researched deeply, and a new statistical model (gamma distribution) of the actual distribution of the EDD is proposed, which can make a more precise prediction of the EDD. Finally, the relation expressions between the parameters of gamma distribution and the related factors affecting the distribution are given.
