Orthogonal arrays and orthogonal partitions have great significance in communications and coding theory. In this letter, by using a generalized orthogonal partition, Latin squares and orthogonal Latin squares, we present an iterative construction method of orthogonal arrays of strength t and orthogonal partitions. As an application of the method, more orthogonal arrays of strength t and orthogonal partitions than the existing methods can be constructed.

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enables multiple mobile devices to share the same frequency band. In a conventional NOMA scheme, the receiver of a far user detects its desired signal without canceling the signal for a near user. However, the signal for the near user acts as interference and degrades the accuracy of likelihood values for the far user. In this paper, a joint maximum likelihood detection scheme for the far user of the NOMA downlink is proposed. The proposed scheme takes the interference signal into account in calculating the likelihood values. Numerical results obtained through computer simulation show that the proposed scheme improves the performance by from 0.2dB to 3.1dB for power allocation coefficients of 0.2 to 0.4 at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-2 relative to the conventional scheme.

In this letter, we show the new signal power estimation method base on the subspace projection. This work mainly contributes to the SINR estimation problem because, in this research, the signal power estimation is implicitly or explicitly performed. The difference between our method and the conventional method related to this topic is the exploitation of the subspace character of the signals constructing the observed signal. As tools to perform subspace operation, we apply orthogonal projection and oblique projection which can extracts desired parameters. In the proposed scheme, the statistics of the projected observed signal by these projection are used to estimate the parameters.
This paper presents a weighted diversity combining technique for the cyclostationarity detection based spectrum sensing of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals in cognitive radio. In cognitive radio systems, secondary users must detect the desired signal in an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment. In such an environment, multiple antenna techniques (space diversity) such as maximum ratio combining are not effective because the energy of the target signal is also extremely weak, and it is difficult to synchronize some received signals. The cyclic autocorrelation function (CAF) is used for traditional cyclostationarity detection based spectrum sensing. In the presented technique, the CAFs of the received signals are combined, while the received signals themselves are combined with general space diversity techniques. In this paper, the value of the CAF at peak and non-peak cyclic frequencies are computed, and we attempt to improve the sensing performance by using different weights for each CAF value. The results were compared with those from conventional methods and showed that the presented technique can improve the spectrum sensing performance.
A novel method for illumination-invariant face representation is presented based on the orthogonal decomposition of the local image structure. One important advantage of the proposed method is that image gradients and corresponding intensity values are simultaneously used with our decomposition procedure to preserve the original texture while yielding the illumination-invariant feature space. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective for face recognition and verification even with diverse lighting conditions.
In satellite/terrestrial integrated mobile communication systems (STICSs), a user terminal directly connects both terrestrial and satellite base stations. STICS enables expansion of service areas and provides a robust communication service for large disasters. However, the cell radius of the satellite system is large (approximately 100km), and thus a capacity enhancement of the satellite subsystem for accommodating many users is needed. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an application of two methods — multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission using multi-satellites and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) for STICS — to realize the performance improvement in terms of system capacity and user fairness. Through numerical simulations, we show that system capacity and user fairness are increased by the proposed scheme that applies the two methods.

In this paper, we present the channel estimation (CE) problem in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM). Most CE methods rely on the assumption of a low frequency selective channel to tackle the problem in a way similar to OFDM. However, these methods would result in a severe performance degradation of the channel estimation when the assumption is not quite inaccurate. Instead, we focus on estimating the channel impulse response (CIR) itself which makes no assumption on the degree of frequency selectivity of the channels. After describing the main idea of this technique, we present an iterative CE method that does not require zero-value guard symbols in the preamble and consequently improves the spectral efficiency. This is done by the iterative estimation of the unknown transmitted data adjacent to the preamble. Analysis and simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed method in multipath fading channels.

In this letter, standard particle swarm optimization (PSO) with the center-symmetric trimmed correlation matrix and the orthogonal projection technique is firstly presented for blind carrier frequency offset estimation under interleaved orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) uplink systems. It doesn't require eigenvalue decomposition and only needs a single OFDMA data block. Second, this letter also presents adaptive multiple inertia weights with Newton method to speed up the convergence of standard PSO iteration process. Meanwhile, the advantage of inherent interleaved OFDMA signal structure also is exploited to conquer the problems of local optimization and the effect of ambiguous peaks for the proposed approaches. Finally, several simulation results are provided for illustration and comparison.
Controlling the peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR) of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) transmissions is a significant obstacle in many low-cost applications of OFDM. An coding approach proposed by H.R. Sadjadpour presents non-square M-QAM symbols as a combination of QPSK and BPSK signals when M=22n+1, and then uses QPSK and BPSK Golay (or Golay-like) sequences with a constant PMEPR to generate M-QAM sequences. This paper proposes a new scheme in which M-QAM sequences are generated by QPSK and BPSK sequences with variable PMEPRs. In other words, this new scheme is a general case of the existing approach. As a result, the code rate of the new sequence is significantly improved, while the upper bound of its PMEPR remains at a comparative level.

In this letter, a micro-expression recognition method is investigated by integrating both spatio-temporal facial features and a regression model. To this end, we first perform a multi-scale facial region division for each facial image and then extract a set of local binary patterns on three orthogonal planes (LBP-TOP) features corresponding to divided facial regions of the micro-expression videos. Furthermore, we use GSLSR model to build the linear regression relationship between the LBP-TOP facial feature vectors and the micro expressions label vectors. Finally, the learned GSLSR model is applied to the prediction of the micro-expression categories for each test micro-expression video. Experiments are conducted on both CASME II and SMIC micro-expression databases to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method is better than the baseline micro-expression recognition method.
This paper proposes a new class of Hilbert pairs of almost symmetric orthogonal wavelet bases. For two wavelet bases to form a Hilbert pair, the corresponding scaling lowpass filters are required to satisfy the half-sample delay condition. In this paper, we design simultaneously two scaling lowpass filters with the arbitrarily specified flat group delay responses at ω=0, which satisfy the half-sample delay condition. In addition to specifying the number of vanishing moments, we apply the Remez exchange algorithm to minimize the difference of frequency responses between two scaling lowpass filters, in order to improve the analyticity of complex wavelets. The equiripple behavior of the error function can be obtained through a few iterations. Therefore, the resulting complex wavelets are orthogonal and almost symmetric, and have the improved analyticity. Finally, some examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

We propose a practical method that acquires dense light transports from unknown 3D objects by employing orthogonal illumination based on a Walsh-Hadamard matrix for relighting computation. We assume the presence of color crosstalk, which represents color mixing between projector pixels and camera pixels, and then describe the light transport matrix by using sets of the orthogonal illumination and the corresponding camera response. Our method handles not only direct reflection light but also global light radiated from the entire environment. Tests of the proposed method using real images show that orthogonal illumination is an effective way of acquiring accurate light transports from various 3D objects. We demonstrate a relighting test based on acquired light transports and confirm that our method outputs excellent relighting images that compare favorably with the actual images observed by the system.
In this correspondence, a method of constructing optimal zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets over the 16-QAM+ constellation is presented. Based on 16-QAM orthogonal matrices and perfect ternary sequences, 16-QAM+ ZCZ sequence sets are obtained. The resulting ZCZ sequence sets are optimal with respect to the Tang-Fan-Matsufuji bound. Moreover, methods for transforming binary or quaternary orthogonal matrices into 16-QAM orthogonal matrices are proposed. The proposed 16-QAM+ ZCZ sequence sets can be potentially applied to communication systems using a 16-QAM constellation to remove the multiple access interference (MAI) and multi-path interference (MPI).

Many selected mapping (SLM) schemes have been proposed to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal sequences. In this paper, an efficient selection (ES) method of the OFDM signal sequence with minimum PAPR among many alternative OFDM signal sequences is proposed; it supports various SLM schemes. Utilizing the fact that OFDM signal components can be sequentially generated in many SLM schemes, the generation and PAPR observation of the OFDM signal sequence are processed concurrently. While the u-th alternative OFDM signal components are being generated, by applying the proposed ES method, the generation of that alternative OFDM signal components can be interrupted (or stopped) according to the selection criteria of the best OFDM signal sequence in the considered SLM scheme. Such interruption substantially reduces the average computational complexity of SLM schemes without degradation of PAPR reduction performance, which is confirmed by analytical and numerical results. Note that the proposed method is not an isolated SLM scheme but a subsidiary method which can be easily adopted in many SLM schemes in order to further reduce the computational complexity of considered SLM schemes.

Ultra-wideband (UWB) communications is used for medical information communication technology (MICT) as a dependable and safe communication technology in recent years. On the other hand, there are existing various UWB systems that are not used for MICT. Generally, these UWB systems use almost the same frequency band. Therefore, they interfere to each other in general transmission channel environment. In our previous work, a novel UWB pulse shape modulation using modified Hermite pulse is proposed as a multiple user access scheme. In this paper, we propose a mitigation method for inter-user interference and inter-system interference using combination of orthogonal pulse shape modulation and orthogonal matched filter (OMF) detector. The purposes of our system are to detect all signals of users in the same UWB system and to reduce the unknown interference from other UWB systems at the same time. This paper provides performance evaluation results based on both of analytical and numerical evaluation. Simulation results show that the proposed system can detect the signals that were transmitted from the same UWB system using orthogonal pulse set, while the proposed system can reduce the interference from unknown UWB systems at the same time. The theoretical analysis is expected that noise tolerance of our proposal will be deteriorated in the additive Gaussian noise channel in comparison with the conventional matched filter. It is confirmed that the numerical evaluation illustrates such noise tolerance equivalent to the theoretical analysis result.

It is known that in the selected mapping (SLM) scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), correlation (CORR) metric outperforms the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) metric in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance. It is also well known that four times oversampling is used for estimating the PAPR performance of continuous OFDM signal. In this paper, the oversampling effect of OFDM signal is analyzed when CORR metric is used for the SLM scheme in the presence of nonlinear high power amplifier. An analysis based on the correlation coefficients of the oversampled OFDM signals shows that CORR metric of two times oversampling in the SLM scheme is good enough to achieve the same BER performance as four times and 16 times oversampling cases. Simulation results confirm that for the SLM scheme using CORR metric, the BER performance for two times oversampling case is almost the same as that for four and 16 times oversampling cases.
This paper proposes an application of splitting source-node power for a two-phase cooperative relaying system where the transmit powers of the source and the relay node are individually constrained. In the proposed usage, the limited source power is divided into two parts that are used in the first and the second phase. Unlike conventional relaying methods, in the second phase the source retransmits its signal with the split power and, at the same time, the relay forwards the signal received at the first phase, which causes interference between the signals. In order to avoid the intervention, so-called a co-phasing weight for aligning the phases of the two signals is used at at the source before the second transmission. The forwarding operation at the relay however is exactly the same as the conventional techniques. Optimal power-splitting as well as the co-phasing weight is provided in this paper. With numerical investigation, the proposed power-splitting is shown to significantly improve the achievable throughput as well as reduce the outage probability compared with the conventional individual power allocation.

In this letter, we show the recursive representation of the optimum projection matrix. The recursive representation of the orthogonal projection and oblique projection have been done in past references. These projections are optimum when the noise is only characterized by the white noise or the structured noise. However, in some practical applications, a desired signal is deteriorated by both the white noise and structured noise. In this situation, the optimum projection matrix has been given by Behrens. For this projection matrix, the recursive representation has not been done. Therefore, in this letter, we propose the recursive representation of this projection matrix.

The technique of partial transmit sequences (PTS) is effective in reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. However, the conventional PTS (CPTS) scheme has high computation complexity because it needs several inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) units and an optimization process to find the candidate signal with the lowest PAPR. In this paper, we propose a new low-complexity PTS scheme for OFDM systems, in which a hybrid subblock partition method (SPM) is used to reduce the complexity that results from the IFFT computations and the optimization process. Also, the PAPR reduction performance of the proposed PTS scheme is further enhanced by multiplying a selected subblock with a predefined phase rotation vector to form a new subblock. The time-domain signal of the new subblock can be obtained simply by performing a circularly-shift-left operation on the IFFT output of the selected subblock. Computer simulations show that the proposed PTS scheme achieves a PAPR reduction performance close to that of the CPTS scheme with the pseudo-random SPM, but with much lower computation complexity.
