Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely used in communication systems in pursuit of the most efficient utilization of spectrum. However, the increase of the number of orthogonal subcarriers will lead to the rise of the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the waveform, thus reducing the efficiency of the power amplifiers. In this letter we propose a phase-changed PAPR reduction technique based on windowing function architecture for OFDM systems. This technique is based on the idea of phase change, which makes the spectrum of output signal almost free of regrowth caused by peak clipping. It can reduce more than 28dBc adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) compared with the traditional peak windowing clipping methods in situation that peak is maximally suppressed. This technique also has low algorithm complexity so it can be easily laid out on hardware. The proposed algorithm has been laid out on a low-cost field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to verify its effectiveness and feasibility. A 64-QAM modulated 20M LTE-A waveform is used for measurement, which has a sampling rate of 245.67M.

To reduce peak-to-average power ratio, we propose a method of choosing suitable vectors in a partial transmit sequence technique. Conventional approaches require that a suitable vector be selected from a large number of candidates. By contrast, our method does not include such a selecting procedure, and instead generates random vectors from the Gaussian distribution whose covariance matrix is a solution of a relaxed problem. The suitable vector is chosen from the random vectors. This yields lower peak-to-average power ratio than a conventional method.

New boundary integral equations are proposed for two-port slab waveguides which satisfy single mode condition. The boundary integral equations are combined with the orthogonality of guided mode and non-guided field. They are solved by the standard boundary element method with no use of mode expansion technique. Reflection and transmission coefficients of guided mode are directly determined by the boundary element method. To validate the proposed method, step waveguides for TE wave incidence and triangular rib waveguides for TM wave incidence are investigated by numerical calculations.

This paper presents a pruning method, Reconstruction Error Aware Pruning (REAP), to reduce the redundancy of convolutional neural network models for accelerating their inference. In REAP, we have the following steps: 1) Prune the channels whose outputs are redundant and can be reconstructed from the outputs of other channels in each convolutional layer; 2) Update the weights of the remaining channels by least squares method so as to compensate the error caused by pruning. This is how we compress and accelerate the models that are initially large and slow with little degradation. The ability of REAP to maintain the model performances saves us lots of time and labors for retraining the pruned models. The challenge of REAP is the computational cost for selecting the channels to be pruned. For selecting the channels, we need to solve a huge number of least squares problems. We have developed an efficient algorithm based on biorthogonal system to obtain the solutions of those least squares problems. In the experiments, we show that REAP can conduct pruning with smaller sacrifice of the model performances than several existing methods including the previously state-of-the-art one.

This paper investigates the resource allocation problem for the downlink of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. A novel resource allocation method is proposed to deal with the problem of maximizing the system capacity while taking into account user fairness. Since the optimization problem is nonconvex and intractable, we adopt the idea of step-by-step optimization, decomposing it into user pairing, subchannel and power allocation subproblems. First, all users are paired according to their different channel gains. Then, the subchannel allocation is executed by the proposed subchannel selection algorithm (SSA) based on channel priority. Once the subchannel allocation is fixed, to further improve the system capacity, the subchannel power allocation is implemented by the successive convex approximation (SCA) approach where the nonconvex optimization problem is transformed into the approximated convex optimization problem in each iteration. To ensure user fairness, the upper and lower bounds of the power allocation coefficients are derived and combined by introducing the tuning coefficients. The power allocation coefficients are dynamically adjustable by adjusting the tuning coefficients, thus the diversified quality of service (QoS) requirements can be satisfied. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the existing methods in terms of system performance, furthermore, a good tradeoff between the system capacity and user fairness can be achieved.

Expectation propagation (EP) decoding is proposed for sparse superposition coding in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. When a randomized discrete Fourier transform (DFT) dictionary matrix is used, the EP decoding has the same complexity as approximate message-passing (AMP) decoding, which is a low-complexity and powerful decoding algorithm for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Numerical simulations show that the EP decoding achieves comparable performance to AMP decoding for the AWGN channel. For OFDM systems, on the other hand, the EP decoding is much superior to the AMP decoding while the AMP decoding has an error-floor in high signal-to-noise ratio regime.

In this work, we introduce notions of quantum frequency arrangements consisting of quantum frequency squares, cubes, hypercubes and a notion of orthogonality between them. We also propose a notion of quantum mixed orthogonal array (QMOA). By using irredundant mixed orthogonal array proposed by Goyeneche et al. we can obtain k-uniform states of heterogeneous systems from quantum frequency arrangements and QMOAs. Furthermore, some examples are presented to illustrate our method.

We propose an optimal power allocation scheme that maximizes the transmission rate of device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying a cellular system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The proposed algorithm first calculates the maximum allowed transmission power of a D2D transmitter to restrict the interference caused to a cellular link that share the same OFDM subchannels with the D2D link. Then, with a constraint on the maximum transmit power, an optimization of water-filling type is performed to find the optimal transmit power allocation across subchannels and within each subchannel. The performance of the proposed power allocation scheme is evaluated in terms of the average achievable rate of the D2D link.

In this paper, we propose L0 norm optimization in a scrambled sparse representation domain and its application to an Encryption-then-Compression (EtC) system. We design a random unitary transform that conserves L0 norm isometry. The resulting encryption method provides a practical orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm that allows computation in the encrypted domain. We prove that the proposed method theoretically has exactly the same estimation performance as the nonencrypted variant of the OMP algorithm. In addition, we demonstrate the security strength of the proposed secure sparse representation when applied to the EtC system. Even if the dictionary information is leaked, the proposed scheme protects the privacy information of observed signals.

We propose a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based optimal multiplexing method for multiple downlink service channels to maximize the integrated system throughput. In the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system, the support of various wireless communication services such as massive machine-type communications (mMTC), ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) is expected. These services will serve different numbers of terminals and have different requirements regarding the spectrum efficiency and fairness among terminals. Furthermore, different operators may have different policies regarding the overall spectrum efficiency and fairness among services. Therefore, efficient radio resource allocation is essential during the multiplexing of multiple downlink service channels considering these requirements. The proposed method achieves better system performance than the conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA)-based multiplexing method thanks to the wider transmission bandwidth per terminal and inter-terminal interference cancellation using a successive interference canceller (SIC). Computer simulation results reveal that the effectiveness of the proposed method is especially significant when the system prioritizes the fairness among terminals (including fairness among services).

The direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) technique is widely used in various communication systems. When adopting orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) codes, DS-CDMA is particularly suitable for supporting multi-user/multi-rate data transmission services. A useful property of OVSF codes is that no two code sequences assigned to different users will ever interfere with each other, even if their spreading factors are different. Conventional OVSF codes are constructed based on binary orthogonal codes, called Walsh codes, and OVSF code sequences are binary sequences. In this paper, we propose new OVSF codes that are constructed based on polyphase orthogonal codes and consist of complex sequences in which each symbol is represented as a complex number. Construction of the proposed codes is based on a tree structure that is similar to conventional OVSF codes. Since the proposed codes are generalized versions of conventional OVSF codes, any conventional OVSF code can be presented as a special case of the proposed codes. Herein, we show the method used to construct the proposed OVSF codes, after which the orthogonality of the codes, including conventional OVSF codes, is investigated. Among the advantages of our proposed OVSF codes is that the spreading factor can be designed more flexibly in each layer than is possible with conventional OVSF codes. Furthermore, combination of the proposed code and a non-binary phase modulation is well suited to DS-CDMA systems where the level fluctuation of signal envelope is required to be suppressed.

In this paper, we propose a notion for high-dimensional generalizations of mutually orthogonal Latin squares (MOLS) and mutually orthogonal diagonal Latin squares (MODLS), called mutually dimensionally orthogonal d-cubes (MOC) and mutually dimensionally orthogonal diagonal d-cubes (MODC). Systematic constructions for MOC and MODC by using polynomials over finite fields are investigated. In particular, for 3-dimensional cubes, the results for the maximum possible number of MODC are improved by adopting the proposed construction.

In this paper, we propose a secure computation of sparse coding and its application to Encryption-then-Compression (EtC) systems. The proposed scheme introduces secure sparse coding that allows computation of an Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) algorithm in an encrypted domain. We prove theoretically that the proposed method estimates exactly the same sparse representations that the OMP algorithm for non-encrypted computation does. This means that there is no degradation of the sparse representation performance. Furthermore, the proposed method can control the sparsity without decoding the encrypted signals. Next, we propose an EtC system based on the secure sparse coding. The proposed secure EtC system can protect the private information of the original image contents while performing image compression. It provides the same rate-distortion performance as that of sparse coding without encryption, as demonstrated on both synthetic data and natural images.

The current orthogonal cooperative system (OCS) achieves diversity through the use of relays and the consumption of an additional time slot (TS). To guarantee the orthogonality of the received signal and avoid the mutual interference at the destination, the source has to be mute in the second TS. Consequently, the spectral efficiency (SE) is halved. In this paper, linear constellation precoded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (LCP-OFDM-IM) based OCS is proposed, where the source activates the complementary subcarriers to convey the symbols over two TSs. Hence the source can consecutively transmit information to the destination without the mutual interference. Compared with the current OFDM based OCS, the LCP-OFDM-IM based OCS can achieve a higher SE, since the subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) can be exploited to convey additional information. Furthermore, the optimal precoder, in the sense of maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance of the symbols conveyed on each subcarrier over two TSs, is provided. Simulation results show the superiority of the LCP-OFDM-IM based OCS over the current OFDM based OCS.

To estimate angle, velocity, and range information of multiple targets jointly in FMCW MIMO radar, two-dimensional (2D) MUSIC with matched filtering and FFT algorithm is proposed. By reformulating the received FMCW signal of the colocated MIMO radar, we exploit 2D MUSIC to estimate the angle and Doppler frequency of multiple targets. Then by using a matched filter together with the estimated angle and Doppler frequency and FFT operation, the range of the target is estimated. To effectively estimate the parameters of multiple targets with large distance differences, we also propose a successive interference cancellation method that uses the orthogonal projection. That is, rather than estimating the multiple target parameters simultaneously using 2D MUSIC, we estimate the target parameters sequentially, in which the parameters of the target having strongest reflected power are estimated first and then, their effect on the received signal is canceled out by using the orthogonal projection. Simulations verify the performance of the proposed algorithm.

In this letter, we adopt two multi-carrier relay selections, i.e., bulk and per-subcarrier (PS), to the multi-hop decode-and-forward relaying orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) system. Particularly, in the form of average outage probability (AOP), the influence of joint selection and non-joint selection acting on the last two hops on the system is analyzed. The closed-form expressions of AOPs and the asymptotic AOPs expressions at high signal-to-noise ratio are given and verified by numerical simulations. The results show that both bulk and PS can achieve full diversity order and that PS can provide additional power gain compared to bulk when JS is used. The theoretical analyses in this letter provide an insight into the combination of OFDM-IM and cooperative communication.

Moreover, a novel spur cancellation receiver structure and algorithm are proposed to enhance the traditional OFDM receivers, and serve as a performance benchmark for the DL algorithm. It is found that the DL algorithm outperforms the traditional algorithm and is much more robust to spur carrier frequency offset.

This paper proposes a simple source data exchange method for channel switching in space-time block code. If one transmits source data on another antenna, then the receiver should change combining method in order to adapt it. No one except knowing the channel switching sequence can decode the received data correctly. In case of exchanging data for channel switching, four orthogonal frequency division multiplexing symbols are exchanged according to a format of space-time block code. In this paper, I proposes two simple sign exchanges without exchanging four orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing symbols which occurs a different combining and channel switching method in the receiver.

This paper presents the excitation coefficient optimization of slot array antennas for increasing channel capacity in 2×2-mode two-dimensional ROM (rectangular coordinate orthogonal) transmission. Because the ROM transmission is for non-far region communication, the transmission between Tx (transmission) and Rx (reception) antennas increases when the antennas radiate beams inwardly. At first, we design the excitation coefficients of the slot arrays in order to enhance the transmission rate for a given transmission distance. Then, we fabricate monopulse corporate-feed waveguide slot array antennas that have the designed excitation amplitude and phase in the 60-GHz band for the 2×2-mode two-dimensional ROM transmission. The measured transmission between the fabricated Tx and Rx antennas increases at the given propagation distance and agrees with the simulation.
